Well, since today is the Famitsu Article's 'actual' release date, there's a bit of a flurry of updates today, and incoming. Most obviously is that the Japanese Website has been updated. (Tip of the hat to GSFun) Personally, I find the screenshots of the Professor Layton gameplay most exciting. There's nothing quite like seeing caricatures of Maya and Luke giving mutual shrugs mid puzzle. And… is that a blond mini-Layton I see? Clearly I'm imagining things.

Anyways, the site has a character section. Currently the four protagonists and the defendant Mahone are listed with 3 extra blank slots. We're already aware of the Storyteller and the Knight Prosecutor, so who's that last character? Does Layton get a mustachioed rival?

Bolt Storm adds:

I haven't gotten a chance to really try and translate it, but it does say Phoenix and Maya will "challenge" puzzles as well. Presumably that means we'll getting to use them to solve puzzles too, and it doesn't just mean the little puzzle cameos.

Also, court now has a hint button in the lower-right during cross-examination.

And on Phoenix's gameplay page, it says he became Mahone's defense during a business trip to London, but was then swept into another world. Curiouser and curioser.

I sure hope someone can provide a translation of the new sections soon.
Boy, I am sooo excited for this game, it looks great. Maya as a small figurine during a puzzle is so cute.

Btw, they haven't uploaded the pages for the remaining characters yet, I checked since I managed to crack their incredibly difficult naming scheme.

Based on the shield icons in the top left of a screenshot on the *Ace Attorney* half of the page it looks like we're back to the ol' 5 strikes system for failing a trial.

Pft. I tried that too. Personally, I don't think they're even on the server. It looks like, aside from the meat of the front page, it was all exported from Photoshop Slices. I don't think the web designer is sophisticated enough to have multiple variations on the server concurrently.

Oh? I guess I gotta try and avoid using that forever now. Kinda hope GS5 doesn't adopt a hint button.

I'd love for Phoenix and Maya to solve puzzles just so I can see them do that three shots as they close in on the screen thing. I'm sure I'll see their failure faces too.

The hint button isn't needed though. We've got to do it the honorable Ace attorney way, by saving at important moments and then turning off the game. I guess that's just not gentlemanly enough for professor.

...that would actually be an interesting way to implement the hint system. As long as the puzzle itself doesn't give a hint (otherwise people might simply reset). Probably unrealistic though, because that would annoy players too.

Oh, I always assumed Mahone belonged to the "other world". So she's a British Lady.

Layton: Hmmm this is a challenging one *hint coin* Mr Wright do you have an opinion?
Phoenix: Hey wait a minute, this puzzle contradicts standard farming regulations! There's no reason each cow should be in a separate pen!

Did anyone else notice that on this page... http://www.layton-vs-gyakuten.jp/about/index.html

Where it shows the picture of Phoenix objection pointing, it's a different courtroom than the Witch Trial one? So does this mean we will get an introduction/tutorial case at the beginning? :shoe:

Hey, great find!
But it could also be a flashback to introduce Nick to Layton fans, since using the DS screenshots in-game would be unfitting.

This could be it. Although it would be cool if you could play a case in the "real world" before going off to "another world". Maybe Wright defends her in London and then through some weird thing her situation changes and suddenly its this fantasy setting.

That would be a good way to get the story rolling while still giving us a tutorial case. It makes me wonder though, we all know Phoenix can speak English fluently, but can Naruhodo? I imagine it would be pretty hard to defend someone in court unless you had complete mastery of the language. Hmm, I may be thinking about this too hard.

They'll probably just say he's fluent. Knowing multiple languages would be a great asset for a famous lawyer. He could have even picked up some English from Franziska (Who in the Japan version is American, I believe.) I could even see it where maybe his client only speaks Japanese, and hence is totally screwed with the legal system until Phoenix arrives to save the day.

I have no idea how they would localize that, though.

(Excuse me if I make a mistake somewhere. I'm still practicing.)

Well, Prof. Layton and Luke just happened to be in London, during Nick's business trip there, and they meet with Mahone. It doesn't say when, where, or how they meet her; only that they do. The rest goes on about how to play; just like in the Layton games: explore around, investigate places, talk to people, and gather information. And given that it's a Layton game, EVERYONE including animals comes up with a puzzle from time to time.

The puzzle with Luke and Maya is one about placing mice in the right boxes. The second one is finding the correct shadow, and the third asks you which person is lying. It's those kinds of puzzles. Too bad there's nothing on the "special" ones we heard about before.

Apparently the trial system in Labyrinth City is called the "Mob Trial," where multiple people can appear on the stand at once. It can get pretty hectic when the witnesses can confer among themselves at will. I guess that explains why Nick might need help from Layton.

When this game gets localized, I'm expecting plenty of references to Monte Python and the Holy Grail. It's almost a given.

Woah… so the universes are united, before they enter Labyrinth City? Or rather, the AA universe and the PL universe are one in the same? Wow. Oh wow.

I'm not sure I'd say that just yet - it just says that Mahone went looking for Layton's help and Phoenix's defense, and that Phoenix was on a business trip in London and wound up defending Mahone for a 'particular reason' before getting zapped into Labyrinth City. If you look on the about page, it looks like Mahone's in Layton's office at Gressenheller, and one of the screens on her character page make it look like she's in a car or something looking at a map.

Thing is, they never explicitly say Phoenix's London is Layton's London.

This can only mean that there is a totally out there but completely logical explanation for all the mystical elements in Ace Attorney. Layton will explain that channeling is actually the result of fumes from flowers that grow in Kurain village and hang on the mediums' clothes or something.

I wouldn't put to much faith in this excursion being canon bear in mind. Just because they share a London in this game doesn't mean they always do.

That is true. At the same time, it would seem odd that they weren't in the same city. Why bother sending Nick to London if he and Layton were going to be sent to a new world altogether? And London is quite large itself, so there's no need to keep them in completely separate universes.

Of course, I didn't mean to imply that they would be meeting each other outside of Labyrinth City. On the other hand, we don't know the origins of Laby or how it connects to any London, so I could easily second-guess myself.

Just food for thought here. Your explanation is just as valid.

It's kind of weird though. Mahone is in Layton's world to ask him for help, her art style clearly indicates she comes from Phoenix' world and her clothes are in line with a medieval world. :D

Layton may have a habit of ending up in fictitious towns, but if time travel can be real then I don't see why spirit channeling can't be.

I was really just joking :P. Especially since I'm pretty sure this game isn't really going to be considered canon for either side anyway.

It's one of those random puzzles. Maya and Luke are considering which of those mice are good and bad. At first glance, what they think in those bubbles seems to be right, but it's not. It's up to you to determine which ones are the real good and real bad ones. (The instructions in Japanese say to arrange them in the right places.)
