No, I noticed that, as well. o:

Even though, I mostly lurk, I see more and more of them, lately.

The place would get overrun in less than a week if the mods weren't so active. It's like keeping the ants from chewing on a sugar cube on top of the stack.

Don't blame the real brands, the spam is obviously for cheap knock off products that infringe on trademarks.

I'm guessing somebody made a script or something that substitutes URLs or specific words that indicate spambot behavior with this phrase. For the newer accounts, of course. I'm seeing it quite a bit now.

I feel like I've seen CR's wordfilter before, but I can't find it now, and I may just be making that memory up :yuusaku:

There's been times I've taken out as many as 4 in a row. They seem to hit between midnight and 6AM Central time.
I'm pretty sure some of them use dynamic IP addresses which would allow the same bot to come back time after time.

Though I think there may be a couple of actual people posting them now also.

They're a kind of boot made of sheepskin. It was fashionable, and I suppose it still is to some extent. I guess they might be luxury because they're made of animal skin? Stupid thing to spam about though, given how many people don't know what they are... Rolex would be a better thing to spam about.

The boots have a decent article on Wikipedia if you care.

:P Funny your non-mod banhammer won't work on me though.

Though don't give the bots ideas about what to advertise. It's not like they advertise the products anyway the links are just bad news.
It does give me great joy now the word filter is added. Though you might want to filter "I registered just so I could get banned" phrases as well as I've banned about 5 bots with that custom title this week and a couple of them use it as a thread title.

Was I wrong to banhammer that one? On the one hand, it might have been an alternate account created by a regular member for the sake of trolling, but at the same time, I feel as though not taking this kind of thing seriously will encourage copycats.

I'm not sure what you are referring to General, looks like a bot to me. Wooster changed the word (it sounds like pug) boots to produce the spammy spambot phrase as a word filter.

I'm guessing the "I registered just to be banned" is a counter for the bot phrase "I registered just so I could get banned" and I love it!

Hammered one particularly creative bot just now, he didn't link to anything, except said stuff like "Hey guys I bought a SAMSUNG GALAXY PAD but DID NOT LIKE IT, should I get an APPLE IPAD!?" (paraphrased but mostly accurate). That's what his custom message said, too... And he was Russian, and we know how spambots have a fancy for Russia (or viceversa?)

He also had another post that replaced Samsung Galaxy Pad with Samsung Galaxy SIII, and iPad with iPhone 5.

So definitely not a real user... And if he was, he deserved a ban hammer for creating such threads... in the Bar Exam. We can pretty much assume 90% of posters to Bar Exam are spambots, and 99,99% of threads created here are from spambots (the remaining 0,01% is for the occasional important thread like this one.)

Also just FYI guys, I'm loving this sense of community patrol :)

Russian, Polish, sometimes Japanese, Chinese, and German...and occupations with special text.

I don't know why bots believe there are so many people with a desperate need for fancy name-brand products. Are they reading something off of this forum that gives them such an impression?

By the way, Wooster, would it make a difference if you hid all but the main board from non-registered members? Or is that something you're avoiding for the sake of lurkers/potential new members?

Oh no, that can't be done! I don't mean technically, I mean it's a huge part of CR! An enormous part of every forum's members come from lurkers, which are always potential new members. Hell, I wouldn't be here if I hadn't been allowed to lurk back in December 2007/January 2008.

I firmly believe that should not be an option. I honestly have no alternatives to propose at the moment, sorry, I just wanted to weigh in on why I think lurkers are important :)

Just nailed a few who all had the same username followed by 70-something. It was "gaomengyun7X". They always used word filter fodder but it seems that banning one would just lead to another replacing it. I fear that more might resort to this kind of tactic.

No links - take away incentive for more spam.

That's... That's actually pretty brilliant.

How come you've said it before but it hasn't yet been implemented? Did Wooster ever comment on that?

Although I do have to say, there ARE hyperlink-less spambots; for example, the iPad Mini/iPhone 5 one I described, but I have to admit that was the first time I had ever seen one. Most spambots do rely on links.

So yeah, I'm all for this idea......... Wait a second, aren't new members supposed to not be allowed to create new threads except in Press Conference? Or is Bar Exam also an exception?

Wooster lets the spambots run lose in that forum so that the cleanup is easier.

As for disabling the links, that just ends up annoying real users.

Henke's got the gist of it. I'm personally not really for blocking links for new members. Say there's a lurker who found a hint regarding something Capcom USA is up to? They get frustrated trying to post the link and give up. Or someone posting about some fan art they created. Congratulations, we just hazed away new members before they could participate. And then, what's the cut off even? One post? 9 posts? The higher the bar, the worse it is for every genuine member.

As for why I let them post in the Bar Exam. Spambots look for the top most forum. In our case, it's the bar exam. If that were blocked they'd move down. Trial Minutes is next, but that's got some strict posting rules, so next down is Court Docket, which I consider to be the second most important forum here. Forum updates and news tips. I'd much rather have the spambots cluttering a forum no one uses then one we actually do use.

What about letting them know to copy their links with a space in the middle? As in, tell them to write www. google. com or something like that. Real members can understand that, spambots cannot.

Wouldn't putting a space there break the link? Sure we're all capable of copy and pasting but it still seems like we're asking a lot of them. Besides odds are a couple will miss the memo and drop links like normal and then rage about why it's not working, post in the problem thread and get redirected to the memo. It's just a big loop. I think we got enough armed ace attorneys to keep a good eye on the place anyway. What worries me is the ones that get close to the 50 limit, I've hit ones that reached 30-40 posts before

Why not simply require mod approval before ranking up beyond 'suspect'. That way no bot will ever sneak past in one forum rush and they will just be doomed to be banhammered when someone looks their way.

Seriously, man, if someone wants to post a link, we just have the forum reject the post with a notice:

"Sorry, but direct hyperlinking has been disabled to avoid Spambot attacks. Please put a space in the middle of the URL to break the link. People can then copy the URL and remove the space to access the link."

In BIG BOLD LETTERS.

PEOPLE can read that and do as it says. BOTS can't.

If you ask me, whoever sees that notice at least once, or does read it, and doesn't want to break the link, isn't worth paying attention to.

In any case, if spambot attacks don't lower after that, we re-allow links, as the measure clearly failed.

I honestly don't see any problem with this. I frankly believe that if you are clearly told in the Forum Rules not to post direct links, and when you try to do so a notice comes up politely telling you why you can't post links, and offering you a workaround... you simply have no excuse to complain. If you get that notice in BIG BOLD LETTERS and don't read it, you most probably are an idiot, and we don't want your links in here. And if you get it, read it, and don't want to follow it, you are a stubborn idiot that doesn't want to respect our rules, and therefore are welcome to leave this forum and not come back until you grow up.

Just my $0.02, anyway.

I don't think that we need to go to such lengths.

A good middle ground, assuming we still have bots posting in the first place, would be moderator preview of posts for new users. It's the same workload, but less ugly outwards.

Well, I'm not sure what else can be done, outside of some stricter registration rules. These are just my half-assed estimations, based on what I've seen, you've got anywhere between 30 and 50 new registrations happening per day. Sometimes they show up at once, other times they register at an earlier date and show up later. But regardless of how many registrations there are, maybe only two or three of those, at most, are real people. Out of the group of non-humans, about a third of them will go nuts and will end up ban-hammered due to their actions.

I'm rather curious as to how people check for bots. Do you check 'View New Posts,' or just ban them as you see them browsing a certain forum? Maybe we need to step up a little, at least on obvious bots? I literally banned about five active bots while posting this (one of which actually posted in this very thread). It's an endless whack-a-mole, and I doubt it's going to get any better.

Again I don't really see a problem.

It costs us nothing (bar a bit of time) to ban bots, and there's lots of us on the lookout for them. Been a few cases I've went to ban one and found they don't exist anymore.

There's no problem with the way things are now I think.
I normally check for bots with New posts.

You know what? You're right. I'm sure between however many there are of you, knocking out bots shouldn't be a problem.

By the way, there are three out there right now.

I guess if you guys are willing to keep up, it's OK. I am too, just that I don't like this sort of "on the fly" solutions. But I guess it's not worth thinking it through too much.

At least not now; let's hope they don't become more aggressive. If that happens, I'll be here with a healthy and supportive, yet "I told you so" smile.

I use "View Active Topics" and sometimes I check the Board Index for suspicious users that have nonsense names and weird stuff in their profile. There always seems to be a few everyday.

Question: can a Banhammer strike be reversed?

I mean, what happens if, I dunno, one day Adrian in black forgets to take her pills and goes cuckoo for coconuts, Banhammers every single one of us, effectively becoming Goddess of the Wasteland that Once Was Court-Records, leaving the Member count at 1, then to be joined only by spambots, taking her to actually chat with them, befriend them, love them, yet receive only links to Viagra deals in reply?

Um, I mean, would there be any way to fix that shiz up?
