I am pretty sure that ban hammers only work on people in the "Newly registered users" group. Don't know the qualifications for that group, but that prevents ban hammering of established members.

From the opening post:

Wooster wrote:
You will have the ability to ban hammer, which means deleting posts, accounts, and IP blocking, all in a couple of clicks. However, you will only be able to do this to 'new' members, so no you can't go on a ban spree against people you just don't like.

I don't care much for all this complaining because I've only been able to ban one person and now the button never shows up for me.

IIRC, the button only appears in the newest (or newer) forum styles, so if you changed it from the default that may be why.

Though yeah it's only new users that can be hit by the "Ace Attorney" brand banhammer. A bot has to get 50 posts to pull itself up from 'suspect' level before we can't ban it. I've never seen it happen but I imagine it'd be such a rare occurance it'd be simple to just drop it's username here and have you or another Mod deal with it personally.

I think I've only seen 2 bots myself over the past several months that accumulated more than 50 posts, one barely over and the other 75, but seeing as it happens so rarely, like you said, that's what the mods are for.

So the lesson here is, if Adrian in black is ever to be made a mod, she must have a constant flow of medicines supplied to her.

Good thing to know she is powerless against us >:D

In all seriousness, thanks for replying guys, I missed/didn't pay enough attention to that. Some mod I am!

Which reminds me, I'm supposed to be in charge of the Trials section. I'll try to liven up the place one of this days.

Just went to new posts and saw maybe 8 new spam topics in a row with all different users. One was even for porn and not Uggs or watches =o

Do you still have to answer an AA question before you register? They're just slipping through.

Yeah, I usually hit at least one a day.

The last bot I whacked had "I'm a spammy Spambot who wants to be banhammered!" in its post three times. Bots are learning to be wiseasses.

Nah it's a word filter Wooster laid down. That phrase means the bots were trying to advertise U G G boots.

First time to see a spambot talking about a Canadian Goose. Sounds more interesting than boots or watches to me.

Not at all. They're the only reason I'm coming back in this spoiler-heavy atmosphere. OwO

It's been said before, but this is really cathartic. Especially when you get one that's about to post in the Bar Exam and then ZAP it before it can. It just feels so so empowering imagining the program struggle to post after it has already been banned.

But yeah, still gotta be vigilant and careful and serious and wary not to ban any innocent bystanders (which I don't think I have done).

I am starting to love this.

Mods shouldn't be allowed to ban people with less than 50 posts.* I mean, look at DeMat taking away the fun from us mortals ;_;

Does anyone else panic that they might accidentally ban an actual new member? I generally have to read their full profile info more than twice just in case it's someone with a shit name and horrendous grammar.

Also, yesterday (or whenever) I found one lurking that had joined about 2 days previous which was odd. They're joining and then watching... waiting to pounce until... oops, you just got banned.

*kidding, I don't want to be blamed if DeMat and co go on strike.

I know you kid, loobs, but if neither mods nor AAs were able to ban under-50-post-bots, we would have to tollerate thousands of bot posts until they've reached 50 posts, and... God help us. God help us all.

Also, I do check their profiles thoroughly, of course. I probably should have banned like 20 of 'em, but I let 8 go because I couldn't be 100% sure they were bots. I am benevolent like that, and that is why you love me, all of you. Yes.

And if whoever we ban IS a real new member... The banhammer wielder in that case will be a murderer, and we will all be his or her accomplice. So we'll have to keep it secret... For the greater good.

No.

You pick up on patterns soon enough, find the common link between bots, etc. Of course you should doublecheck, as you have been, but you'll find that the majority of bots here have zero interest in the AA series or even in related topics such as video games or anime (though a tiny percentage might pimp game codes or beta keys...it's business, after all). Trust me, you will more than likely see that shit again.

So hey

While browsing newposts I saw that the bot-handling-tutorial thread "Don't feed the spambots observe and report!" had a new post by something named suprapxy. Assuming it was a bot I clicked on it's name only to find it didn't exist.

"Good" I thought to myself "Means my comrades are doing their jobs" but then I wake up the next morning and it's still there in the same topic. I click the topic and find the last post is by General Luigi. I click the name again, it still doesn't exist. Also the topic stays marked as with a 'unread' post.

Is this a bot or some other form of glitch, or even just me?

That may have been my fault. I hit the ban hammer on a spam bot, and the board spit back a MySQL error message. I ended up having to finish the ban manually, but there's still some ghost data. Not sure exactly what's going on however.

Wait they are striking with PM's now?

Yes. I've tweaked the ban hammer a bit. Now when we ban hammer the banned's info is reported to stopforumspam.com; it's amazing how much one account spams the entire net.

Anyways, I've also upgraded the forums and changed the capatcha to questions. (I had tried questions before, but it stumped the spambots for only an hour or so last time. Right now I'm using the same questions as before and our sign up has been clean of bots for 12 hours or so. Only attacks I've noticed are from sleeper bots. Perhaps there was an exploit to questions earlier that's now patched? That's the only theory I have.

Actually, as an aside, it was curiously difficult to switch to questions. I had to temporarily boost memory to PHP and MySQL to get around some obnoxious memory limitations. No reason a simple configuation switch should need 128M each.

Two bots from last Sunday vs the daily 20 or so (not counting sleeper bots). All things considered, that's not a bad tradeoff.

Actually, as best as I can tell, all the spam attacks have been by sleeper bots. At least since the 10th that is. They're running strictly on reserves now folks.
