Spoiler:
Didn't Akane say that Sigma ultimately fails at stopping Radical-6? So the third game will be about them having another go?
Thats interesting point you have about the darker tone, although 999 was "dark", it turned out no one in the group was in real danger. And though VLR seems lighter, the group actually were infected with R-6 right? For some time I thought it would be like 999 where Zero made you THINK there was a virus, or something :D ZE3 will definitely be interesting....
In one of the endings where you find everyone is dead, I thought that was due to R-6.. I mean I didnt expect Dio and K to have killed each other.
Remember those FTS robes Akane had on? I can't see her being a member of FTS, they kidnapped her when she was a little girl so she wouldnt join them. IMO Akane/June has seen some bad and crazy shit which has made her personality somewhat manipulative and cold, but I don't think she's EVIL.

There is a talk about the narrative of VLR this year at GDC. I suppose I'll relay what the writer says, if it isn't all over the internet already (it will be).

I really enjoyed Virtues Last Reward. By far, Luna is the best character, in my opinion. Poor Luna...
There are many things you could be doing right now.

I'm playing the game right now and I've just done my first play through. I got a "To be continued..." :/
Just as it was getting really exciting as well...

Anyway, I'm enjoying it just as much as 999. I like all the characters, but so far there haven't been many twists or shocking moments. Although I'm sure they're going to come in my next playthroughs. :will:

According to Siliconera, ZE3 will take place between 999 and VLR *
Spoiler:
Technichally its a sequel (I think), it takes place after VLR but the actions are in the past (it would be after YS in OS's body is kidnapped in 2028)

It sounds as though Uchikoshi is giving away spoilers here - or is he? The set up sounds too convenient and obvious, and a BRILLIANT thing about 999 and VLR was the lack of context and information given about the game.

What does everyone else think?

Spoiler:
Timeline-wise it does take place between 999 and VLR, but Sigma is there after experiencing VLR in the future, so I'd still say it's a sequel. It's kinda weird that Uchikoshi announced it this way... but I wouldn't call this spoilers. Without knowing VLR, you wouldn't know the significance of the game taking place between 999 and VLR. Even while playing VLR, you may guess that the third game would involve the Mars mission (VLR happening in the future is easy to guess), but I don't think you'd conclude any other endgame things just from knowing what he revealed, until you actually get to the endgame.

That's a rather poor attempt at click-bait :p

That's like having someone from Nintendo casually mentioning something absolutely irrelevant about the next Zelda/Mario, and writing 'OFFICIAL : NEXT ZELDA/MARIO GAME ANNOUNCED BY NINTENDO!!!11!!!'

Booo @ Silliconera :p
I'm more looking forward to the actual interview (unless that lone question is their 'interview'), and that actually reminds me I haven't read the Q/A yet :(

I totally agree with Bad Player on this one. The only people who'd be surprised by this would those who haven't played VLR yet (or not till they got all the endings).

By the way, with so many new games coming out at once, my VLR replay isn't going to happen any time soon :yuusaku:

Chunsoft still exists (in a way); they merged with Spike to form Spike-Chunsoft last year.

Was it confirmed it'd someone we'd play? It's not just the player who can't jump through dimensions (ie: Phi for example...). I don't think we'd play as someone from FTS anyway.

Btw, in the French interview I mentioned a while ago, Uchikoshi says that Akane isn't a member of FTS. He said she wore those clothes because she had to. Wonder why's that.

About Ace : in the Q/A, Uchikoshi says Ace wasn't a believe at all, he just used FTS to get money and do his own experiments.

By the way, when I find the time (probably next week-end), I'll try and translated the said French interview, the part where he talks about ZE3 (it's from December, so nothing new).

A few tidbits from an IGN interview (don't worry, there's no spoilers in the spoiler tags, it's just for convenience!)

Quote:
“If it’s possible, I would like to do something on a home console, especially for VLR. But for 999, that would be hard, just because the core of the game is that dual screen. I think that would be hard to do on a console. I just realized, though, that it might be possible on the Wii U.”

Spoiler: My reaction
Interesting, though I'm not sure I'd like a ZE game on a console... even on the Wii U. Playing a Visual Novel on a handheld is so much more convenient than on a big, HD TV.

Quote:
“The sequel is in my head at the moment. I hope to be able to announce something in the near future, and I hope that fans are looking forward to it. One of the biggest things pushing that is the fact that I was invited to GDC to speak, and the award there. IGN also gave VLR the ‘Best Story’ award. Thank you for that, first of all. But all these things are what’s propelling it. Players are expecting a sequel. Spike Chunsoft as a company, they feel like they need to answer those requests. So I do hope I can announce something soon and I hope people are looking forward to it. As far as the platform, that’s still undecided.”

Spoiler:
That reminds me, I totally forgot about the interview I was supposed to translate... oh well, don't really have the time now :yuusaku:
But yeah, Chunsoft BETTER answer those requests, pronto! :shoe:

If its 'undecided' it'd better be on 3DS. The way thats worded sounds like development hasnt actually started yet, so I'd expect an announcement theyre developing the game, maybe with early shots in the summer/autumn.
I agree I'd rather play a VN on a handheld than a home console.

Eh, I'd prefer it on the 3DS because all of the ZE games have been on Nintendo handhelds so far. It's not like the platform is limiting either, it's just that the game engine couldn't handle playing out cutscenes, so they had to be pre-rendered.

Also, I don't recall if many home console visual novels are localized in the United States. For example, I know that the Xbox 360 has a huge number of visual novels in Japan. I'm concerned that localized copies of a home console visual novel may not sell as well for that reason, even if the series is fairly well-known like ZE.

I might be forced to get another console if the next ZE isn't made for the 3DS. I would prefer not to do that, especially if it's a next-gen home console like the WiiU, which would be expensive.

Wasnt VLR made for 3DS first as the lead platform in mind and then it was decided it would also be on Vita? I think buying a Vita for 1 game would be silly, thats why I hope ZE3 is on 3DS.

As I've already said several times, 3DS is pretty much 100% guaranteed. I doubt they'd go for a console-only release, and certainly not Wii U-only, or even PS3... and certainly not PS4. Developments costs for that would be waaaaaaaay above what Chunsoft is probably willing to put in the game. That being said, I could totally see a compilation with upgraded graphics on consoles, later maybe. Would be much better than a smartphone port (which would be ok I guess, if Chunsoft doesn't resort to TWEWY-style trolling unlike Squeenix).

Only question mark is the Vita, but I think they'll do two versions this time again (with the 3DS being the lead platform, though I doubt it'd change much).

My reasoning is the following :

999: DS only because of the whole 'Dual vision' thing (plus wanted to keep costs as low as possible)
VLR : 3DS and Vita, because when development for the game began, neither console were released. When they realised the 3DS wasn't doing so hot during its first months, they decided to also release it on Vita. Plus, they probably didn't want to bet on the wrong horse.
New game : 3DS definitely (would you say no to a console who's likely to reach 15 millions in Japan only at the end of the year? Not Chunsoft's management, or their shareholders), Vita maybe (likely, after VLR).

But grim_tales, don't expect any news/announcements, and especially pictures, before the end of the year/early 2014. Seems highly unlikely, considering Uchikoshi said he was busy with another project atm.
