The official GS5 site just got updated, bringing with it a voice cast for the game, info on some new systems, and a little more on cases 2 and 3. This post'll be updated as we translate it.

The announced cast:
Phoenix Wright: Takayuki Kondou
Apollo Justice: KENN
Athena Cykes: Megumi Han
Jin Yuugami: Shunsuke Sakuya
Gouzou Ban: Biichi Satou
Miles Edgeworth: Eiji Takemoto
Gaspen Payne: Hisashi Izumi
The Judge: Bunmei Tobayama

The official site also gave us some more hints to case two, and a new use for the Mood Matrix. Yumemi Tenma, Trucy’s friend, is called upon to testify - but she’s utterly terrified of ghosts. So terrified, in fact, that she’s convinced the murder scene was crawling with them! All the Mood Matrix can pick up is “Fear”.

Apollo uses the Mood Matrix to point out that the ghost Yumemi thought she saw riding some sort of wheel in the air was actually the room’s chandelier.

Image Image

Later, Kumabee starts sweating in court when the topic of Tenma Tarou comes up, and Apollo’s bracelet picks up on something. Before he can focus, though, Jin’s hawk Gin pops up out of nowhere and attacks poor Polly! The site notes that under these conditions, Apollo can’t possibly use his Perceive ability.

Image Image

Lastly, the site introduced the “Thought Route” (カンガエルート kangae ruuto) system, which you probably saw in last week’s trailer.

When the trial has reached its climax, Apollo and the others might find that though they know the truth, they still can’t quite nail the true criminal. When this happens, Apollo reviews the facts that have come to light and uses them to build a train of thought leading to a new deduction. The player is presented with a series of choices of varying kinds (items connected to the case, facts that were revealed in court, etc.) and must choose the correct one to advance the reasoning towards one final fact.

(As an aside, there’s nothing saying this system is unique to Apollo, he’s just the example provided.)

Finally, the site teased case 3, taking place in some sort of school in the middle of a festival. The place is plastered with all sorts of stuff related to law, crime, and prosecutors, and if you look in the back, you can see a live performance being advertised. I wonder who might pop up here…?

Is the Judge's VA the same as the Layton VS AA one?

Interesting. The Thought Route sounds kind of like Logic.

And I thought that there was something off about Gin attacking Apollo but this just makes it official. And like before, Kumabee isn't wearing his bracelet and Apollo still has it. Hmm...

I have to say, some of these settings and characters look very unabashedly...Japanese, even for GS. Nothing wrong with that, but I think the translators are going to have a hell of a time turning these places into California. :hobolaugh:

This Thought Route thing sounds pretty cool, kind of like AAI's Logic mixed with courtroom deductions. Between this and the Mood Matrix, as well as the return of Percieve/Psyche-Locks, it sounds like there will never be a dull moment gameplay-wise.

No updates on the characters page. I guess that means Pearls and Klavier aren't very improtant for the story.

Edit: Ahaha, the "Guilty Dogs" in the school. :D Franziska was proposing that name in AAI for the courthouse Hot Dogs.

I like Yumemi's design. Usually anime characters are either beautiful or ugly, but she manages too look just plain normal (of course more good than bad, but you get my drift).

Find it funny that Yumemi Tenma is the only Case 2 character to receive official art so far. Zeniarai is mainly shown for Apollo not being able to be use his bracelet and Biyouin basically only has one screenshot. Maybe they haven't finished updating?

Multiple choice thoughts systems to push a story forwards is a very, very common system in Japanese ADVs, but I can't help but think of Super Danganronpa 2's Logical Dive. Well, sans the crappy minigame.

Something tells me there's gonna be a reference to it, especially now that GS5 has a case starring at an academy...

I've never played Danganronpa, but I know it's popular as heck. Is there only a Japanese release? I really like this genre of games, but I haven't quite expanded out very much.

DR doesn't push massive numbers in Japan (DR2 apparently debuted at 69,000 copies its first week), but it's fairly popular, I think. I know it's getting an anime adaptation this summer.

And yeah, both games are Japanese-only; they've become popular overseas thanks to a very high-quality fan translation/Let's Play.

DANGAN RONPA IS AMAZING

I LOVE IT

ACE NANAMI <3

IT'S LIKE MY SECOND FAVE TO UMINEKO IN TERMS OF WHAT I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW (Ace Attorney is number 3.)

But to be more specific, DR is Japanese only, yeah. There's an iOS port of the first game though, so you might be able to pick that up if you can get a Japanese iTunes account.

Plugging my own reviews of both games.... Short story: Dangaronpa is a fun, yet way too easy game. Super Danganronpa 2 improves on almost everything, but the story works best if you have played 1.

Which reminds me, I still have the novels lying here... somewhere...

I'm wondering, is " カンガエルート " Meant to be a pun on " 考える "? Or is that just a coincidence? I thought it was funny :gant:

Also, am I correct in saying Apollo's VA was his one from GS4? (I think it was also KENN)
I'm wondering if they'll acknowledge the voice actors for the english one, Japan seem to make it an important thing, but the english ones never bother (Like in AJ, Apollo's VA wasn't in the credits)

Yeah, I heard that it really is a direct sequel to DR1. Also, DR0 spoils a bunch of DR1 too, I've heard.

I'm worried that she won't have any speaking parts. :/ Why exclude her from the list since she's already revealed?

It seems this is the most basic tree, with one path being right and the other wrong, with the former leading to the next "node", so no, this is not like edgeworth's logic. It's just more expanded "chose one of the answers to the given question" thing that is common through the AA series (and other VN).

In the most recent trailer, she is shown in the animated cut scene, so i am sure she will have some voiced parts.

Also, on the JP website, there are still spaces beside the judge, it looks a bit off, i'm sure they would have centred the judges image if those were all the voiced characters.

I noticed there's a case 3 tab to click on, but no content seems to be there (it's just the top and bottom site borders and the case 3 title. Is my browser doing something or is there nothing there?

The list does still look like there are 3 spaces left un-filled. Maybe they're going to reveal people like Trucy, Pearl, and Klavier's VA's in the next round of updates? (Or Maya's)

Sounds like the bumbling of Phoenix in the first three games, but now it was called something that doesn't sound so bumbling..... Just wondering, is there a "Mistrial" button to hit during court? That might be fun, being able to call for a Mistrial during a case where it's obviously the wrong defendant for the wrong reason or what not. (I really wish I would've had that in 2-1)

I believe I have mentioned how torn I am about this game?
It's nice to hear GS is continuing, but I shudder at the stupidity that the games might still have. Although GK seemed a bit more intelligent at times, even if the story made no sense cause Case 2 happened first, then Case 3 and Case 1, but then we go further back for Case 4 and we proceed forward to Case 5 which is in the present.
And they are putting emphasis on the whole 'Dark days of the Law' so hopefully they'll put the dark days a decent atmosphere. I might order the game early, I might not. All depends on my mood and money situation.

It's just a basic description of the background to case 3.

"The 3rd episode is set at a school!?

The 3rd episode has the stage set at a school with the bittersweet scent of adolescence. Moreover, it's right in the midst of a school festival!

Just what developments await Wright & Co.!?"

There's a mock trial, the art club exhibition, a new food item Criminal Curry, a rock band's guest appearance, the Scales [of Justice] Dining Hall (at room 2-3? not sure), and the Prosecutor's Tea House.

Haha, Guilty Dogs are here. Perhaps this means there are more references to the English localization?

Looks great! Every time the site updates, I get more and more pumped for the game. I like the new "Thought Route" minigame. It reminds me of that Sherlock episode where he retreats into his "mind pyramid" and uses the facts to arrive to a new conclusion. If the English translation isn't called Mind Pyramid, I'll be very disappointed.

While the Japanese voiceovers look good, I'm more curious about who's going to be doing the English voiceovers. That's a lot more people getting a voice than I expected! Hope the casting is good...

I just want to make sure I'm up to date about this. Is there going to be voice acting in the actual game, or just the cutscenes? It seems like there's a lot of people being voiced, but its totally plausible that they all appear in cutscenes. I'm personally not a big fan of the idea of having the actual gameplay dialogue being voiced.

Based on the English Trailer, it's pretty likely that the guy who played Phoenix from Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 will be reprising his role. I have no idea who could be playing the other roles, though. I'm not very up-to-date with voice actors.

Noooooo, please not!
He sounded so boring, actually he sounded bored, when voicing Phoenix. There was no emotion put into it, especially that Objection, he sounded all, "Yeah... I got you. Here. Take that...." even the sneeze attack sounded awkwardly bored.

The anime scenes WILL be voiced and some very important ingame scenes COULD be voiced (e.g. how they did in PLvAA). But overall we will hear the bleeps and bips ingame (apart from the objections! and stuff of course).

It's the first Ace Attorney game that got a CERO C rating in Japan, so I hope this will reflect on the atmosphere.

Since it is only a digital release, I'm not entirely sure that there will be English audio in cutscenes. There might be only subs and the only Englsish-voiced parts will be shoutings.

But anyway, if they going to dub it, they better allow us to have a Japanese audio, since I can't stand an English-voiced anime (even if it is only a cutscenes).

The eShop has no limit on game size. Several of the retail games that are also released on the eShop are pretty big AFAIK, so I would hope Capcom US doesn't put a limitation on things or super compress the video cutscenes.

Example: VLR was released digitally (and in retail) in Europe and it had full Japanese voice acting (they couldn't license English for some reason). I don't know how big that is total, but it's likely in the 300-500 MB range.

CERO C rating are games meant for ages 15 and up. Most of the others are rated CERO B, and some are A, which means they are considered suitable for ages 12 and up, and A for suitable for everyone respectively.

That's in case you don't know the CERO ratings.

Based on the English Trailer, it's pretty likely that the guy who played Phoenix from Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 will be reprising his role.

Noooooo, please not!
He sounded so boring, actually he sounded bored, when voicing Phoenix. There was no emotion put into it, especially that Objection, he sounded all, "Yeah... I got you. Here. Take that...." even the sneeze attack sounded awkwardly bored.

I totally agree with you, but I have to admit he didn't sound nearly as bad in the trailer. I know he only said "Objection!" but it still sounded better than in MvC3. Maybe he's been working on his delivery? Either way, I was playing around with the GS123HD app and realized that as bad as this guy's voice can sometimes sound, its still better than if the original sound effect was the voice of Phoenix. It's just so high-pitched and a little whiny...I played AJ first, and when they switched from Apollo's totally badass Objection to Phoenix's, I just thought "Really?"

So, my point is, this might work out better than we think. We really need to hear him in action. Hopefully they are localizing the Nintendo Direct Trailer to show at e3.

Yeah I don't think they will alter it in any way, as (as far as I know) all the games released to eShop are the exact copies of their retail counterparts.

And I think I read somewhere that a 3DS Cartridge can hold something like 1Gb, so I'd imagine the game would be around there.

CERO C rating are games meant for ages 15 and up. Most of the others are rated CERO B, and some are A, which means they are considered suitable for ages 12 and up, and A for suitable for everyone respectively.

Yeah I noticed this and thought it was strange. Nothing we've seen so far is particularly more violent or disturbing than before. It's also got a provisional PEGI16 rating in Europe, so I would imagine that the ESRB could either go T or M with this.

Just for fun, I was looking through the GS website, and found all the previous ratings:

GS1 (DS) got a B rating (12 and up. Makes sense.)
GS2 (DS) got an A rating (All Ages. I find this strange because I think GS2 is less appropriate for kids than the B rated GS1.)
GS3 (DS) got a B rating (12 and up. Once again, this makes sense.)
GS4 got an A rating officially but the collector's edition got a B rating (I guess something in the first game is mentioned in the GS encyclopedia, making it B? Either way, once again I feel GS4 is less appropriate for children than GS1 so I'm not sure why GS1 got a higher rating than GS2 or 4.)
GK got a B
GK2 got a B

So yeah no other game has gotten a C rating in the series before. A "C" rating is technically 15 and up, so like I said the ESRB could really go either way on this one.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

That's in case you don't know the CERO ratings.

I don't know CERO ratings, so thanks for the clearing up. I don't even understand my own country's way of rating games. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball got a Age 16+ rating while its sequel Xtreme 2 got a Age 12+ rating. Yes Xtreme Beach Volleyball included 3 seconds of a backshot of a naked Christie in moonlight, making it hard to make anything out, but in Xtreme 2 the bathing suits became kinda skimpier and, sadly, I cannot forget those freakishly bouncing boobs that jiggled individually....!

Yeah, even the first case between Payne and Wright, both their soundclips sound really high. Payne on purpose, but Phoenix just sounded.... weird. As for the MvC3 Phoenix, perhaps he worked on his delivery or he got some specific instructions on how to sound from the director.
After all, behind a terrible voice actor('s work) is generally a bad voice director...

I'm sure the Ace Attorney voice director is going to do better with Phoenix Wright than the Marvel vs Capcom one did. There's only so much you can do with dialog that has no context at all. I have faith that the actor do better in actual scenes where he gets a better sense of the character. If it is him.

I wonder when they will release a US cast list? It would be great to hear Apollo's voice for the first time. Although he had the most badass objection in the game, so I hope the new guy can live up to it!
