I'm sensing some hostility here. I miss Gumshoe too, but your rage against one of the core characters of the series is unfounded.
Maya's at the heart of Ace Attorney with Phoenix and Edgeworth. The reasons she was placed in danger were either because of how important she was to Phoenix or how important she was to Kurain, both of which were the underlying plot of every game. You can't just let someone like that disappear. She's Phoenix's closest friend and given the cryptic shrugging on the stream, it sounds like she has an important role to play again. She's a main character, my personal favorite, and I look forward to her return to see how the maturation she took in the original trilogy blossomed.
I understand that you apparently don't like her, but you're also adamantly opposed to a simple stepladder joke. I've never thought it was that funny either, but it's a series staple and a couple of optional lines of dialogue. It would be wrong to just drop that too. There's a difference between advancing the series and cutting ties to everything that came before it. The original trilogy was all about the formation of unbreakable bonds and friendships. Breaking those with a convenient "time passes" hand waving completely ruins continuity.

AAI had 5 cases, with 21 "Chapters"/parts total, but I think was longer because of the third-person game play.

I think it is technically a longer game just based on the different gameplay. Investigations segments in GS usually take a long time if you get stuck and don't know what to present, but in AAI you not only have that but you have to investigate crime scenes, put together logic, and do things you'd usually do in the courtroom, so I think it makes the cases feel much longer.

The thing that gets me is that on the same day, we get that Simon Blackquill has psychological manipulation abilities, yet the jury system is gone. That's on top of the mob trials in Layton X AA. A lot was (probably unintentionally) set up to make a fleshed-out jury system work out, but now we hear that it's not even going to happen.
Also I just realized: GS4. GS5. Courtroom No. 4 is bombed. Courtroom No. 5 is the stage of the bombing case.

I did (German) LPs of all AA games and here is how long it took me to play through them:
AA: 22:02 (would be by far the shortest AA game if not for the bonus case)
JFA: 22:19
T&T: 24:25
AJ: 21:27
AAI: 21:40
Of course I never got stuck, because these were my third or so playthroughs, but I was slower as usual in progressing the text.
So T&T easily should be the longest game despite the rather short 4th case. So naturally I am very happy when Eshiro compares the length of AA:DD to it.

I'd rather see Gumshoe. Call me sexist, but I think it's cause he's a guy. Also, he kinda became more incompetent as the games went on but.... if PHOENIX can do all the crap he did in the games, Gumshoe definitely can be just as incompetent. Plus, it'd be a good way to show that Gumshoe might've gotten better. Maybe even become Chief of Police, get him a raise or something like that.

It seemed like they originally planned to include some reference to the Jurist System, but decided to drop it in favor of something simpler. I'm not complaining, but it is a disappointment.
And the defendant lobby from the first case is set in Lobby No. 5. There are bound to be references to the number 5 in this game. And the comparison to T&T's length suggests that there will be 5 cases, or at least I'm hoping so.

Well, I suppose you didn't try GK2 yet. It's got quite a lot more game play than AAI, though plays rather like it. I didn't time myself, but I think it beat T&T in terms of length. I felt that I spent the most time running through GK2, not just because I was studying Japanese at the same time.

Gumshoe didn't get any more development than Maya did. The only reason why he feels like he's evolved is because he was given a greater role in the GK games. I actually think Maya got more development in the original trilogy as the games went on.
But I've also never been a huge Gumshoe fan. I like him a lot, and I enjoy seeing him onscreen, but there are many other characters I like more, including Maya. But more importantly than that, I started the series with Apollo Justice and have a slightly different outlook. This game is mainly a Phoenix Wright game, but it's also "Apollo Justice 2". I want to see the return of Ema, Klavier, Trucy, etc. All the main characters that I started with. I know people will say the AJ characters aren't as interesting or are less developed than the originals were in GS1, but I will argue that when I went back and played GS1 I felt the exact same way about Maya, Gumshoe, and Phoenix; I had a hard time getting into it because the characters seemed simple. (The exception being Edgeworth: For some reason I thought Edgeworth cemented his character right away, probably because he was so different from Klavier). So I don't even want Gumshoe to be in the game, really. While I am much more into having returning characters than I was back when GS5 was announced I still want to make sure that it doesn't fill up so much that the AJ characters don't have room to get in there. And that means only having the most important characters in Phoenix's life returning. And no matter how people feel about Maya, there is no question she was important in Phoenix's life.

Cat it's not ok to just say 'Maybe I Am sexist' without any real consideration, I suggest you rethink your statements, big deal or not Maya is THE Sidekick to Nick it is expected for her to show up whether you consider her of worth or not, you are also neglecting to consider whether she has underwent any character development in the time that has passed. Consider 1-5 Ema to AJ Ema for an example, last we heard of Maya she was left with a massive responsibility hanging over her it is possible she has actually matured somewhat and you shouldn't disregard that out of hand.
Secondly the game never claimed to be following solid law. Most of the complaints I've seen from you come from contradictions in AA law to real world law but there is no indication they are one and the same so you shouldn't expect anything from it until clear rules have been explained in-universe. The in-universe rules? Where possible they don't tend to contradict each other and follow the logic in-universe.
You play a game you buy into the contract to play the game by the rules.
If that's too much for you take up modding or hacking and go and alter a case to allow you to do all the wondrous things you want it to but don't complain the game isn't doing it right when it is merely obeying it's own rules and logic.

Funny you say that, since I found Mia, Godot, and even Pearl as the most plot-related roles in T&T. Ah, well. The attention has shifted off of Maya and onto a new character, Kokone... erm, I mean Athena. Too bad for Trucy, since she really only starred in one game so far.

Not at all. But it's clearly stated in the first game booklet that the trial system "applies only to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and does not reflect events in real-world courts." So I'm not sure what you were expecting.
If you want true logic without the bullshit explanations, convenient traps of the prosecution, and infuriating witnesses that constantly get away with murder (sometimes literally), you should probably forget about the AA series and just go into law.
If you just want fun with some elements of law, you should try to enjoy the game for what it is.

Contrary to Gumshoe Maya stayed backstage for three games in a row now. So I don't really get your point here.

I have tons of logic, it's just that the game won't let me use it properly until it says "It's the right time" which is when everybody has figured out what the problem is.

How did you play the games out of interest then Cat? It's not really a defence to say "There was no booklet because I played it digitally" but I thought virtual console devices typically came with manuals and disclaimers of their own from the home menu.

Read VGR's recaps, they put a ton of sexual innuendo, penis jokes and references to how dumb the law is into it and I wanted to see if it really did have all that. So I went the illegal route and went for ROMs, finishing each game in 24 Hours and deleting the ROM again. *shrug*

I don't think there was any mention of the next Layton game either (although it was shown in a previous Nintendo Direct). If I recall correctly, Level5 usually announces their games on their own, not at E3.
I'm not going to be concerned about it unless they don't announce it along with the next Layton game's release date.

Besides at this stage I think it's highly likely Maya will be in, bringing Phoenix back is one thing, dropping PEARL in is pretty much sealing the deal in my eyes since they are only missing one more person.

Like Pierre said if Pearl is going to be involved, chances are she will be too somehow. Besides, if she isn't, why would they all but shoot down another widely-missed character (Gumshoe), only to start beating around the bush when asked about Maya? That doesn't sound right.

I'm not upset. DM is the one who started with the All Caps.
I just think that, if Maya appears, people will focus more on her - for whatever reason - than on the new characters. And those same people will then complain that the new characters are 'bland and have no personality' cause they focused too much on the old ones.
And by them I mean the players, not the developers.

If Maya DOESN'T come back, people will focus on wondering where the heck she is? People don't believe she's just too busy to ever see Phoenix again or something, since this contradicts the canon in 3-5's credits. Nobody's stopping you from focusing on 'new characters' if you don't like other ones. It's not like Maya's the Teenage Sidekick In Training being promoted any more. It's not even properly confirmed she's in the game.
And a lot of 'new characters' (eg. AAI, at least outside the mains) were 'bland' and had 'no' personality and this wasn't anything to do with focusing on old ones. If comparatively speaking they're worse than old characters, then it's because they are.
