I guess I'll be that side character that gets to say a few lines to the main protagonists. :godot:

Trust me. I've been through a lot during my life and I'm around the same age as you. I'm currently at the point when I'm entering the final two years of high school, and this will likely be one of the most important moments of my life. I need to do well in order to get into a good college and everything has gotten much more difficult. Not to mention that I have virtually no social life, almost no friends, rejections from every girl that I've ever liked, divorced parents, re-married parents, tougher classes, and mountains of extra homework and volunteer jobs. You know, the usual stuff. But no matter how bad things get for me, I only have to think about the situations of other people even less fortunate. At least that way, my life doesn't feel totally in the gutter.

But perhaps the best part of my life right now, is someone that I've met here on Court Records. She means everything to me and we email each other every day. My life had no meaning before I met her, but now it does. Unfortunately, she lives halfway around the world. There's zero way we could ever meet right now, and I'm always afraid that it'll never happen as we move on with our lives. I hope it does, but there really are no guarantees in life. So I just live in the moment, enjoying what I can for as long as it lasts.

Once you get to where I am, where I'm pretty much at the end of the road in my high school life, you're gonna have to give it all you got. Right now, I gotta get a whole bunch of stuff done, like writing my college resume, get teacher recommendations, apply for scholarships, etc. All I can really tell you is to do your best, and don't hate yourself if you mess up. Just try to pick yourself up, move on, learn what you did wrong, correct your mistakes, and move on, because it'll only make you miserable if you try to dwell on your mistakes. Trust me, I've been there before.

Well, I'll admit, Emiko's meant a lot to me since we've gotten close to each other, and I'm very glad me and her can talk with each other everyday through Facebook chat and just talk about whatever, like video games, anime, movies, our personal lives, our struggles, etc. And we too live a far distance from each other, but at least we're still in the same country. But I just hope that one day, we could meet up one day, go out, and just have fun together.

And I absolutely agree with that last sentence right there! I wanna live out everyday and enjoy my time with her for as long as it lasts!

Hey, I didn't say life would get easier. All I said was that once you get farther into high school, and you're reaching the end of it, you gotta toughen up even more. And I can imagine one would have to do so even more during college. But as intimidating as college probably is, I'll try to endure through it, and enjoy whatever of life's goodness I can find.

Though, I haven't walked a mile in your shoes, so I can't say for certain that it'll be any easier or harder to endure.

Well that's true. If you don't buckle up towards the end of high school, you'll enter college life and freak out since almost every aspect in your life is going to change and you'll have to adapt and interact with people who have adapted better than you or haven't adapted at all... It's an all-purpose environment.

But trust me on this, it's never gonna be easy

Applying for colleges and getting recommendations seems like the easy part. After all, you've done all the work already. For the first two years at high school my grades have been pretty good. All "A's" and one or two "B's." I just hope that I can get into a decent college, preferably one far away from where I'm living right now. I absolutely hate where I live. The people here are so snobish and uncaring. It's sickening to be surrounded by these people.

We only email. I've been thinking about doing Skype for a long time now, but I can't do it from where I'm living. None of my family knows that I'm in contact with her. If they found out I'd probably get into a lot of trouble for talking to people whom I've never met online, or even worse: forced to cut off communication completely. I've never had social media before, and it was only a few weeks ago when I got a Twitter account. Court Records is practically the only forum site I go to either. I'm glad I joined it, because without that; I wouldn't have met her.

You're lucky that both of you live in the same country. We live thousands of miles apart over the Atlantic ocean in different countries. It doesn't get much farther in distance than that.

Before I met her, I had always felt alone. No girl would ever talk to me. Every time I tried I always got rejected and was viewed as "too weird." I had almost no friends, and it got even worse when I had completely different schedules last year. The first year and a half of high school was absolutely miserable for me, and I felt that no one cared about me. I even got wrongly suspended for a few days for something that I didn't even do, but that's another story.

If I hadn't commented on a specific thread at a specific time, I'd probably still be alone right now. But as pure chance would have it, the planets aligned on a leap year during a blue moon and everything started from there. Not a day goes by when we don't email and we've grown to care about each other deeply. It truly is a special feeling to that somewhere in this world there's at least one person who does care. I want nothing more than to meet her one day, but I'm always wondering if that will even happen. Right now though, I just want to finish high school as quickly as possible and leave this awful place.

I guess if I had to name an anime that described my life, it would no doubt be 5 Centimeters Per Second and WataMote ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I’m Not Popular!~

All A's and only one or two B's? Impressive! You're oing a lot better than I have as of late, to be honest. ^^; ...Ok, well, I'm not doing TERRIBLY, but I feel like I could do a whole lot better than how I am now.

My parents are actually full aware that me and Emiko have Skype'd before (Too bad we can't find an opportunity right now, to do it). I'm actually surprised that they haven't bee that suspicious about our Skype conversations. Heck, they even saw her, and joked with her asking if she wanted to have some ice cream with us. ^^;

As for my social life, I've always been kind of shy and awkward around people, but I don't think anyone's truly hated me because I'm weird. As of recently, I've found that I'm able to hold up a decent conversation with another person pretty well, so I've been improving on my lackluster social skills little by little.

Well I'm taking some college level and honors classes next year. Hopefully I can maintain that.

You're lucky that your parents are so accepting. If it ever gets revealed who I'm talking to, I handle it from there. Right now, no one needs to know but me.

I have practically no social life, but my social skills aren't bad per se. I can still hold a good conversation, but I just don't have the friends to do so. Almost no one I know play the same games as me, and NOT A SINGLE person watches anime or reads manga.

I thought about putting this up on the old "You know what really grinds my gears?" thread. I spent quite some time in my life thinking that I wasn't good at conversations and such. But last year I realized it's not like that. I AM quite good at talking with people, but people make it difficult. You have your shysters and your holier-than-thous, that's one thing, but sometimes people just complicate the whole thing because you have different tastes or something. Like, you're a sports and games fan and the other is a clubber who likes TV shows. And nowadays, few people want to immerse into others' universes and talk about stuff that they don't really like or care about... Making conversation a pain.

Yeah, me and my classmates have school tend to have very different tastes in stuff. Like they'll watch a lot of TV shows like the Walking Dead, the Office, How I Met Your Mother, and Psyche. But me, I don't watch a whole lot of TV, I'd much rather be sitting in front of a DS/TV/Monitor playing video games. Ok, well they play video games too, but usually it's only Xbox stuff, and they even have Xbox Live gatherings together. Which makes me feel left out of the loop. Especially since I don't think anyone in my class hardly ever plays a game on a Nintendo or a Sony console anymore. But all I have ARE Nintendo and Sony consoles.

"feeling out of the loop" describes my entire life so far

That's the thing; you guys have different tastes, ok. But that shouldn't be a problem. There has to be some sort of psychological explanation about how it's harder to have conversations with "different" people nowadays, I'll find it soon enough

*chews a needle*

Seem's like there's a mighty lot of borderline-romantic online acquaintences goin roun' these parts these days.

*flicks needle away*

Well let me tell you something, your folks might call them "virtual people" they might say rather ridiculously that "they don't exist" but you can stick at it, perhaps one day you can meet, and if you can introduce them to your folks all the better. Then they too will see what nice folks they are. Worst comes to worst, you can say you met them through a friend at a party or somethin, they won't care so long as they think you've physically met them before, they can find out the truth at the wedding.

Last week, I celebrated my 3rd year anniversary with my girlfriend that I met on Gaiaonline in Paris. My folks love her now, her mother pulled me in for a hug and a kiss rather unexpectedly before I left, they were sceptical at first but you can make it work.

go away with your happy stories and your happy life you asshole i hate you

I second this, you can meet someone pretty much anywhere these days. You saying you met your girlfriend at C-R isn't (or shouldn't) be any different than the pimpin' jock who says he picked his girl up on a random Kik conversation, you know? It all depends on how well you match and how much are you willing to meet.

well... life can end up always sucking under certain conditions, yes. However, at least some of these conditions can be changed by the decisions we make.
Some of these decisions are the jobs we apply for, the place we live in (or, where that is not a choice, at least the house/flat/room we live in), the objects, people and topics we surround ourselves with, and what we do with our spare time.
I know that work life can be challenging and even downright destructive, and it can be hard to get out of such a workplace. But not every workplace is bad, not every job in general is bad, so to say that life after school is an endless slave job full of suffering (to exaggerate a bit) is not only very demotivating (and I mildly suggest you never say such a thing to a chronically depressed or otherwise desperate person), but it is also not true. It can suck, but not necessarily, and if it does, it's not necessarily forever. There are enough people who do like their job, or their coworkers, or the benefits that come with an otherwise undesirable job, or are at least satisfied with their life as a whole, whether they like or dislike their job.

For better or for worse, life doesn't end with college either. What follows is working 9 to 5 (at the least) for about 40 years...if you're lucky.

In that case, my advice to you would be to start preparing for your ideal future ASAP. If you've got any skills you need to brush up on alongside your qualifications...best start right now. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking formal education alone will get you places, but more often than not that isn't the case.

Anecdotal example: I've been getting top grades throughout my degree so far but no prospective employer's given a shit about them so far. It was only due to my extracurricular programming experience that I was able to get a summer job as a mobile app developer.

I'd say don't sweat it like Yellow Magician is doing, yeah it's nice if you get good grades but no one should place so much importance on something. If you do that you'll only build up anxiety and set yourself up for a fall. Albert Ellis called it "Musturbation", in the end it's you who decides what you let stress you if you choose to act like that.

So yeah, nobody ever complain about how much life sucks around me because I f**king know. And nobody ever promised us that life would be easy, and life would be boring if there was no type of struggle or challenge.

All I'm saying is that if TopHatProfessor wants to, uh, not be miserable his whole life, he should start taking steps to prevent the rest of his life from becoming miserable - otherwise he could end up on the path of pretty much every other human being that includes an unsatisfying job, several failed marriages and finally a painful death.

Either that, or a complete change in mindset, anyway - which for the average human being just isn't possible.

(EDIT: Yes, I might be slightly depressed today. Sorry)

Yeah was gonna say seems like you need a change of mindset XD

I doubt most humans have several failed marriages for example.

Maybe not several, but I honestly think the singular successful marriage is a rarity and haven't seen much to convince me otherwise.

This doesn't mean I support the singular successful marriage either (ooh controversial), but marriage is just something I thought I'd point out as a path that can end up horribly wrong without a decent amount of foresight.

Hey you guys, I never said life sucks after high school, I just said that if you think your life isn't great and you blame the high school life for it, then you're in for a shock. Of COURSE you shouldn't let life beat you up after you go to college, it's not bad and not good either. Life is just a challenge and you make what you want to make of it

These idiots and trolls on the Skyward Sword board are really pissing me off.
Now people are complaining that the story in Skyward was so thin and not gripping and totally not what they had expected. Well guess what, dear Players, Zelda games are not about the story. They aren't RPG games, they are Action Adventure games, the type of games where a story is generally there as an overall outline of something. Something you're not supposed to pay much attention to because you're constantly doing actions and having an adventure.

Of course, that decent argument gets shot down immediately because Nintendo constantly said Skyward will be the origin story. You know why I think they said it's the origin story? Because those fans that constantly mumble, fiddle with abacusses and try to read between the lines constantly demanded to have a proper timeline in the damn Zelda games. Yes, Nintendo failed at having Skyward explain much as an origin story - majority of the story goes down the drain, anyway, once you approach the first dungeon. That's nothing new in Zelda games.

Why are there fans who demand those stupid timelines for Zelda? It doesn't make any lick of a difference which Link I'm controlling, where this Zelda game takes place or whether it in any way connects with the others. Hey look, it's Twilight Princess Link and he's getting lessons from the Shadow of the Hero - Oooooh, it must be Ocarina of Time Link! OMG IT'S TOTALLY A DIRECT SEQUEL!!

For god's sakes, can't you just enjoy the fucking game without trying to cram it into a timeline? The timelines for Zelda make no fucking sense anyway, so who cares if Nintendo tried to appease the timeline-obsessed fans and failed to do so? WHO CARES IF ZELDA IS CONNECTED TO ANOTHER ONE!?

The story-idea is always the same: Save the fucking World.
We don't need a timeline for that, jeez, just play the game and have fun!

That is the main reason why I won't waste my money on Hyrule Hystoria.

As much as I like having backstory in action games... they will never be the reason why I play them. I play Zelda to swing my sword around and kick some ass. Everything else is secondary.

I mean, imagine if Super Mario 64 was invented just now and released today for the Wii U. Can you imagine how many people would be on forums ranting on and on about how the "story makes no sense" and how "Bowser was supposed to be your ally because in the previous game - Super Mario RPG - you fought Smithy with him" and whatever...

And that is also why I tend to dislike passionate fanbases. Ema showing up for 10 text boxes for pure fanservice in AAI is the main proof of how stupid and mindless the fans can be and how that stupidness can - and mostly will - affect the game itself. I could bet a finger that if it wasn't for fans constantly begging for Ema to come back in AAI with the game almost finished... she'd not even be there. And it wouldn't change a damn thing other than that whole footprint shebang.

Hyrule Hystoria is an art book that gives insight into the creation and production of the series. The timeline is just one part, and not the focus. It's an amazing book and I highly recommend it for Zelda fans. Plus, you can get it for only 20$. That's a steal for a tome of this high quality.

I highly doubt that there would be that much ranting. Come one, who plays Mario games for the story?

AAI was originally supposed to star Ema Skye as the main character and not Edgeworth. Her being in the game very likely has nothing to do with the fans, but the actual designers simply just wanting her to be there even if it's a minor role.

I personally don't care for artbooks of videogames or anime/manga stuff - only one I have are Vision of Escaflowne movie one, which I got from my brother, and a Ranma 1/2 one I bought years ago to use for pose references a bit.

And VCM hit the nail on the head.
Demanding a story, a well thought-out, detailed and constantly-present story has no place in a Zelda game that is known for gameplay, dungeon crawling and puzzle solving, not the story. What was the story in Twilight Princess? Well you start off by having a mission of bringing something to Hyrule, but then you need to help Midna with stuff and then it ends with saving the world. Ocarina of Time? Something about keeping the Triforce save although your actions were what caused the Triforce to fall into Ganondorf's hands! And you have to save the world.

It's like demanding a story in... in the older GTA games! It's just you running around, stealing cars and driving like a maniac for the pure fun of it. Was there a story in the older games? Not that I remember. And it would've felt really out of place, had there been a detailed one.

Actually, Zelda games are brimming with story. On the surface, each one may be simple; but the mythology behind them is pretty in-depth. The stories ARE well-thought out. In fact, Ocarina of Time in particular contains almost every aspect of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey.

To me, it's perfectly clear that Nintendo intended for the stories in Zelda to be deceptively simple at first glance, but full of philosophy and character with a more in-depth examination. The average player might not notice it, but I can definitely see it.

I hope you aren't saying that I'm (just) an average player...
I dislike this whole idea of casual, average or hardcore players. What actually makes them call themselves that? A certain amount of time spent playing games? Or how much attention to pay to a game, learn all the things about it? That's dumb.

I'm not saying I don't care about the story behind the games or that it's not important enough; if you want to delve deeper into the Zelda series' story, then by all means, enjoy your Hyrule Hystoria. But me, I couldn't care less. I know the story behind every game and I don't feel like I need to know any more than that, you know? I know what is the mission behind Ocarina of Time, I love how Majora's Mask was designed after the 5 stages of grief... And there's that. I don't care about timelines and stuff. And Nintendo itself wasn't caring too much about it at first seeing as they had to invent a separate timeline just for A Link To The Past which was the lamest excuse ever.

Yep, pretty much. I'm all for 100%-ing games and stuff, but if you don't want to, you don't have to, simple.

My gaming status goes through cycles. Up to about 10 years ago, I would have called myself a hardcore gamer, playing everything from PC to console to flash games. Maybe in some ways, I still am, but I just don't have as much time to devote as I once did.

I'm thinking "casual gamer" applies to people who start up a facebook game or msn/yahoo/whatever game when they're bored or waiting to chat with someone else. Or someone who joins in a multiplayer adventure or sports game during a get-together at a friend's house. I don't really think hardcore is any better than casual, and vice versa. As long as you're enjoying the game, it doesn't matter.

The only gamer type I don't care much for is the trendy gamer. And I hate to say it, but it usually ends up being some junior high or high school girl who randomly jumps into one of the Final Fantasy games with such enthusiasm because she thinks it will make her more appealing to boys, but she'll never seem to care about anything else. Fortunately, trends don't last, and this type of gamer will leave the fandom within six months to a year.
