It's like a sitcom
It is basically a 3DS without a 3D screen, and in a flat form factor instead of a clamshell.
I didn't believe it was real at first because it doesn't look like something Nintendo would make, but the trailer was too professional, and it's on the official channel.
Personally I think it looks stupid, mostly because it isn't a clamshell at all. (EDIT: there's also only one speaker) However, I saw someone point out two potential advantages: better ergonomics (note that the controls are next to the top screen now) and better battery life since there's more space, due to the lack of the clamshell. I can see that happening.
I'm personally sticking with my 3DS for sure. If I didn't have a 3DS already, I still would get the 3DS because it still looks better and can fit in my pocket, while it looks like the 2DS is too fat to fit in a pocket. A constantly exposed plastic screen (unless they actually made it scratch resistant) is also concerning. I could live without the 3D, but I'd rather have it than not.
EDIT: The price is $129.99. Somewhat tempting, but personally I'd still stick with the 3DS if I didn't have one already.
EDIT2: Apparently the 2DS doesn't actually have two screens. It's one large touch screen with a plastic overlay! Guess that saved a good amount of money that way, and explains the lack of the clamshell. http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=210991
Seems that the marketing may be aimed toward kids, especially those without a 3DS already. This would make the most sense, as it is no replacement for the 3DS. I'm still concerned about kids easily scratching the screen, but maybe breaking the hinge is a bigger concern for kids.
EDIT3: There currently isn't a Japanese version announced.

Someone on another forum I frequent pointed this out and it makes sense. They're marketing this system with the new Pokemon games. Basically, games marketed towards children. The 3DS's 3-D is advised against anyone 7 and under and you know children are going to play with that 3-D slider anyways, so the way I see it, this is more marketable towards younger kids who can't handle the 3-D, and yet still get to play the games they want to play, such as Pokemon. The lower price range will appeal to adults as well.
Again, I'm not going out to get one of these, it's not appealing to me in the slightest, but hey, maybe it'll make some kid happy. Marketing it with Pokemon is a brilliant move to say the least. I hate that it doesn't fold in like the other systems, that's what I prefer over Sony's handhelds. I'm just hoping this doesn't making the 3-D stuff obsolete. I'm not a huge fan of 3-D, but I know there's people out there who do enjoy it.
For those curious about battery life and such, there's an image I came upon. Apparently, it's slightly better than the 3DS, but slightly worse than the XL.

Ok, good to know that the screens are the same size. I was a little concerned that they would be smaller.
It looks like they didn't improve the battery by much... also it's heavier than the 3DS, which is odd if the battery isn't much different.
Oh, and mono speaker? It's always sad when companies decide they need to drop one speaker to save money (not space, since that really shouldn't be an issue).
The one weird thing I see in there is that there are still two outer cameras. So I guess you can still take pictures in 3D, but you just can't view them in 3D. I'm surprised that they didn't drop one camera to save a bit of money (and maybe put it into the second speaker).

Of course, seeing as how the 3D effect on the 3DS is always optional, I don't understand people who complain like they're being forced to use the 3D effect. I have yet to encounter a 3DS game that had mandatory 3D effect.
It looks neat, reminds me of the Gameboy.
But I don't think I'll buy it. They say it's basically a 3DS minus the 3D effect that I never used beforehand, I really don't care... UNLESS, MAYBE, if this is region code free... but even then, it's going to depend.

Um, that's a bit hyperbolic, don't you think? Most parents with the income that allows them to do so can and will pick this up if their kid asks (or screams/tantrums) for it. And considering it's now the cheaper option, you can probably expect to see a lot of them around.

Anyway, being able to close the DS has always been a plus, because you can't scratch the screens even if you were to just throw it in your bag. Obviously there are going to be cases to keep it in but eh.
I guess I'm saying that I already don't want one. I still need to get a 3DS yet!

It's an ugly shape and doesn't have the nice power saving feature. It can't fit in your pocket. Sure, it's cheap....but what....the....
Maybe it's targeting kids. And maybe I'm too old. But this is bad, Nintendo. At least you are experimenting on a device that has a very solid core of games and its momentum can't be stalled. If they did something like this for the Wii U, that would be bad....

From what I understand about the whole 2 camera thing is that you use the 2 cameras to take pictures. It saves it on your SD card. If you transfer that SD card to your 3DS, then you can view the pictures you took on your 2DS in 3-D on the 3DS. Honestly, that seems really pointless. They should have done what you suggested and just dropped one of the cameras. If you already have a 3DS, why would you want a 2DS?

It's not that bad.
Granted, it looks much more toy-like than the other iterations and the lack of a clamshell opening is bugging me for how unportable that makes it, but then again, the 2DS isn't made for people like me in mind. As dumb as it looks and sounds, the 2DS coming out on the same day as Pokemon X/Y will certainly attract the 3D-paranoid parents en masse to stores just in time for the holidays.
Another possible benefit I can see for the 2DS could be a cheaper system for importers to buy. (Though, strangely, the 2DS has only been announced for the US and EU but not for Japan, so I guess that'll wait...)

On a different note, the placement of the buttons is also incredibly stupid, not only because the touch screen is on the bottom, but gripping something of any significant weight like that by the top is gonna make you all the more likely to drop it, especially younger kids--since that's the presumed target audience.

In all seriousness though, that's one thing that turns me off of the 2DS's design, and that's the lack of a clamshell design. I really find it convenient to just fold it up and put it in my pocket on the go. It's why I prefer the design over Sony's clunky handheld designs. I dunno, I just like the more compact feel of the system I suppose.

A: This console redo is aimed at children, budget gaming and those unable to see 3D and/or who decided to skip out on the 3DS for reasons otherwise unstated. IF you already own a 3DS, this console is not aimed to be something for you to pick up...it is not catering to a need/want of yours since the 3DS is already handling that effectively.
B: It's aimed at children as part of it's demographic - the big design allows it to be easily held and kept close...
in essence, it's kinda like a 'my first tablet' kinda idea, only with the obvious not a tablet element.

If you already OWN a 3DS, then yes it is pointless...but the marketing on this one is to do with expansion beyond normal audiences, and it's design/marketing is likely going to reflect that in the coming months prior release...for example, alongside pokemon!

There is only one giant screen, with just the plastic in front of it being the "divider". It also means it's one giant touchscreen, just with no touch functionality on the top. The good thing about this is that the touchscreen on these devices it pretty durable, and it means 2DS owners won't have the all the screen issues the 3ds/3ds XL has.
The other good thing about this is that for those who want a 3DS for one or two games (maybe like some of us here who bought/are buying a 3DS just for DD and PLvsAA) it brings the cost down a bit. (I'd always prefer the larger screens of the XL, but had I not bought a 3DS yet I probably would just buy this instead.
It also means if DD doesn't sell well and we need to import a Japanese system to play GS6, this might be a cheaper way to go.
If this works right, maybe Nintendo can capture the magic of the DS where it seemed like every household had one. Then DD is bound to sell more copies!

Actually, I don't know if the 2DS will be released in Japan. It isn't on the JP website: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/hardware/index.html
The Wikipedia page also says that a Japanese release hasn't been announced. So there might not be one of them.

Wow, I hadn't noticed that. Well there goes that plan. Maybe the 3DS is more profitable in Japan?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

As previously stated this is meant for children (no 3d damage) and functions as a cheaper alternative. Nintendo probably saw this target demographic and acted upon it. I personally am no longer a child and own a 3DS (ergo no cheaper alternative is needed)
Instead of saying this product is not meant for me, other people are treating the 2DS as the greatest failure in Nintendo history (and boy they had their fair share) and react overly butt hurt.

Remember that you aren't ever forced to use the 3D effect (even in Super Mario 3D land where there are 3D puzzles based on forced perspective, there is an easily accessible way to move the camera if you can't use 3D). Judge the 3DS by its game selection instead, which is pretty solid lately. And if for some reason you hate the 3D effect that much, you can turn it off entirely in the parental controls so the slider never activates it.

I'm fairly sure this is from marketing failure on the part of Nintendo in not illustrating strong enough the ability to turn the 3D off. So people get hung up on its main gimmick (the 3D), and overlook it because it may hurt their eyes. I have to admit, though, that lack of conformity as to where the 3D lands on a particular game and how far away the eyes are is somewhat off-putting, akin to commercials being louder than the television show.
To be honest, this money could have been better spent. Maybe getting the licensing rights to put Tetris Attack on eshop? Maybe pouring more money into the Mother series and getting the rest of the series on the eshop? Maybe even on sobering up Sakamoto before he decides to make another Metroid game. The possibilities are endless. However, as recent Doctor Who episodes have shown, what may have been is always more powerful than what is- and while I can lament over that fact and become overpowered by it, I simply wish Nintendo success in their new endeavor.
And hope that the revenue brings Rare back, possibly buys the Mega Man franchise (which Capcom doesn't seem to want anyway), or even putting Quest 64 on eshop (yes, yes, I know it's not the greatest game ever, but it has quite a lot of nostalgic value, and the combat system and strong soundtrack are well worth the money).
