My best friend is pissing me off lately. Reason: he's worried about gaining weight due to the side effects of some medications. But it's not a normal worry - he's obsessive about this and is always searching on the internet about the subject, trying to find people who suffered from those side effects and complaining about it every damn day. Obs: He's a thin person (I don't understand why he's so worried about gaining a little weight at all) and he NEED those medications to control his mental problems. His mental health is way more important than "gaining weight" - and only a few people who used those medications actually gained weight, because side effects change depending on how one's metabolism works.
I'm trying to be supportive, mostly because I have a bunch of phobias and I'm trying to put myself in his shoes, but sometimes I can't help but feel he's somewhat vain when it comes to his own body and I HATE vanity.

I can sort of understand your friend, but I also can't. I'm not the type of person who cares about gaining weight, I don't want to be "fat" but gaining a little weight isn't a problem for me. Last time I weighed myself, although that was a year ago, I was around 65kg and at my height of 156cm... I think that's normal?

But if your friend ate regularly and is still a thin person, it's likely that he has a pretty fast metabolism that means he won't gain weight easily. Is it possible his obsessing over the potential weight gain is part of the mental problem? Or it could be a... well, what if him obsessing over that is a replacement "mental problem" that he gets now that he is on medication for the others?
Just a thought.

I guess that's it. I'm aware that his obsession is most likely pathological and he doesn't have any control over it - he's not a superficial person, he's just neurotic about his appearance due to some childhood traumas - but I'm just not able to be sympathetic as I want to be, unfortunately. A while ago I had to live with benzodiazepines aware of the scary side effects, but I accepted the treatment for the sake of my health anyway, so I just think he should put his health in the first place and forget about the little inconveniences that his medication can bring.

I feel a little jealousy towards you. A year or two ago, I was given a prescription for anti-depressant pills. After reading the manual, though, and seeing that heart problems were listed as side effects with high possibility, I decided to not take them, given how I already have slight heart problems.
Although I somehow doubt the anti-depressants would have helped.

Because my problems are more related to anxiety and I was too young, the docs only prescribed me anxiolytics but I have A LOT of friends who use anti-depressants... In fact that kind of medication can cause some light arrhythmias but I've never heard complaints about the serious ones.
Why you say that you doubt they would've helped?

Nowadays fluoxetine is not used too much. It can work against anxiety as any serotonin reuptake inhibitor can, but the top drugs on the market are sertraline and venlafaxine (I think).

I don't know how things are in your country, but over here it is pretty rare for a doctor to prescribe these kind of things unless you REALLY need them. Also I assume the doctor reads your medical files and sees your heart problems and takes into consideration what kind of medicine you need. If someone like that gave me medicine I'd probably use it.
Especially considering he studied medicine and I studied corporate economics I wouldn't trust my own judgement about diseased over him/her.

I think that's more a job for a psychiatrist or something. I wouldn't resort to medicine for such things as easily though, I'd be scared that I make a connection between medicine and manic jealousy and wouldn't be able to conquer such problems on my own anymore.

That's a shame - jealousy is my single biggest emotional problem to date, so it'd be nice to keep it in check somehow. I should definitely get some sort of medical help, anyway.

I don't think jealousy would require any kind of medication or treatment. Unless you were, like, possessive and would lock people you are jealous of up somewhere. Although I have to ask, is it Jealousy or Envy? Cause there's a difference... jealousy is when someone does something with something/someone you "own" and envy is when someone has something that you don't...

I'd say that issue is more appropriated to be treated by a psychologist but honestly I don't think I have big hopes in psychology anymore... At least not in the Freudians and Jungians. For these types of psychologists, ALL of your problems can be summarized as sex, sex, sex or mom/dad problems. I'd bet more on the development of behavioral psychology and neuropsychology.

I don't think Freud was that great, either. I guess he had mother issues himself, so of course, like every other selfish person, he thinks his problems count for everyone. Oh and the idea that every woman wants to have a penis. As for Jungians, well, I don't know too much about it, but what I've learned about it from encountering it in Persona games and reading a bit afterwards, it doesn't seem to focus much on sex.

Jung is all about archetypes in our life and how figures in our life fit those archetypes. The archetypes themselves get kinda....mythical Jungian psychology is a very interesting area. Persona games are NOT a good basis to know Jung's work as I learned XD.

Also sadly it was Freud's focus on sex that split him and Jung up, they used to be the best of friends and spent entire days and nights analysing each others dreams and bouncing ideas off each other.

Jung was way better than Freud, he has a bunch of interesting theories (as you probably noticed, Jung was focused mainly on symbolic language and on the duality of life - anima/animus, shadow/persona and so forth) but I personally don't think those abstract theories are enough to sustain a long-term treatment. I expect that psychology becomes more objective...

Well, my jealousy is leading to depressive episodes which I often have trouble dealing with - so I'm thinking I should finally seek medical help at some point.

As to whether it's jealousy or envy: A mixture of both, I'd say.

Honestly, I'd be pretty worried if a psychologist tried using Freudian or Jungian psychology to diagnose my problem(s)...

Was remodelling my starting Terraria flats into a delightful industrial workhouse of solid stone and hard tin walls with iron doors. In the final remodelling I would have giant stone (or possibly metal) towers on either side with dart traps aimed at the front doors to prevent anyone from trying to escape the complex while I build a mansion of gold above on a hill to oversee it.

Then I hit a bug, I accidentally hit a chest with a pickaxe (which normally shouldn't do anything) but in this case it hacked off half the chest. So the half-chest is now inaccessible. If I tried to mine the other half I can get INFINITE GOLD CHESTS which is nice for money and storage space but it's hardly needed. While it is there the space is unusable and the ground beneath it is now indestructable. So my iron fortress is complete apart from this one half-chest resting upon a wooden floor.

AND IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE GODDAMN BUGS! HOW DARE THEY STAND IN THE WAY OF INDUSTRY!

Guess it's a time for colds. My mom has one, too. She's pretty sure she got it from the Wiesn, cause it's a giant petri-dish, what with so many people around that place. Ditto hospitals. They keep things so clean, worse bacteria survive. She went to visit her then-boyfriend in the hospital when he had pneumonia and she ended up with bronchitis.

My computer usually drives me nuts, but this one takes the cake: I almost had to take a zero on my midterm because of my crappy desktop.

I'm lucky my teacher was nice enough to give me a little bit of time to retrieve what I could of it and email that to her, but if it wasn't painfully obvious that I need a new computer before, it sure is now. This piece of crap, which is barely two years old, doesn't do anything important. Sure, I can use the Internet, and I guess that can make up for a lot of the crap it doesn't do. But it doesn't save Word docs, doesn't save edits to images, doesn't sync music to my and my family's devices, barely downloads anything, barely opens PDFs (and doesn't print them at all, which nearly screwed me over when I tried to apply to GameStop), the list goes on. (And yet somehow it successfully completed the downloads necessary to play AAI:PP. How the fuck does that work...!?)

Meh. So I went to Gamestop Saturday to retrieve my pre-purchased copy of Pokémon X, but they said they messed up my pre-purchase, and that I'd have to wait until Wednesday to pick up the game, so they can resolve the error. I'm just going to hope I don't get similar issues from the eShop on the 24th when I buy a certain game coming out that day.

Went to a job interview in a cosmetician studio today - yeah, I am so desperate for a job, I'll go for one where the perfumed lotions will give me daily migraines. Anyhow, I know I won't get this one cause she pretty much told me so.

One of the things she told me was that she was surprised I came to the interview in what she saw as jogging pants. They are not jogging or sweat pants, but I admit they were not the silk or whatever trousers people usually wear to an interview. And that may be a reason why I didn't get the position...

So allow me to apologize for not wearing jeans. Or any other kind of pants. See, all my pants that are not crash outs, which I don't wear outside of home anyway, don't fit anymore. So allow me to apologize for not appearing in pants that would give me constant camel-toe, which would have hurt my chances as well, not to mention my crotch. I am so sorry that I do not have any money to buy new pants every month!

Gee, I wonder why I don't have any money, huh!? :chinami:

PS: Fuck this, I'll just buy a Sebastian cosplay and wear that to my interviews!

I can see both sides of it. If you don't have dress pants then you don't have dress pants, not really much you can do. But interviews are very first-impression based and she may have mistakenly thought that you didn't care about looking professional. It's not fair to you if you can't afford professional interview clothes but unfortunately, people judge based off of appearances and that's important when considering employment. I would recommend borrowing dress pants/clothes and doing all you can to look sharp so they'll have a better first impression.

I know you're trying to give me a good suggestion but... the only other person living here is my mother and while I think she would lend me clothes to wear if I really had nothing fitting: she's at least two sizes bigger than I and I don't think pants-obviously-way-too-big-for-me would look better than jogging pants.
So the result would be the same.

No, it's not corrupt files (even opening up a new document and typing "uhdsahlashl" and trying to save THAT doesn't work :chinami: ), and no, it is definitely not normal.

@C-A: Got any friends or other relatives that would be willing to lend you a hand with formal wear? And do yourself a favor and don't limit yourself to pants: a decent skirt can go a long way... And should you not like them, at least you (hopefully) wouldn't be expected to wear them once you actually start working :keiko: Slacks meant for guys work too, of course... So long as they fit.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you annoyed because you don't like the song or are you annoyed because you can't get it out of your head? Or is it both?

I'm bothered because it's a horrible song made by the same people that produced "hits" such as Friday and Thanksgiving. I feel it's a bit offensive with its portrayal of Chinese culture, and the fact that it gives off a strong pedophile vibe with the black panda man.

Honestly, those kinds of things should just be ignored. If you complain about them, people will get curious and take a look, which in turn leads to them complaining. The cycle just keeps repeating itself until pretty much everyone on the Internet knows of the song's existence. It's essentially the dark side of viral marketing; people share something so everyone can see how much it sucks.

You're a bigger man than I. I just HAVE to complain about bad things otherwise I can't sleep at night.
