Chapter Two
This isn't happening...this isn't happening..."Mr. Edgeworth?"
I...I...I just need to stay calm..."Helllooo? Mr. Edgeworth?"
This is where all that high priced counseling and sessions I sat through for hours should pay off.Edgeworth held his chin with his thumb and index finger as he looked down at the floor. He argued with himself silently in his mind, trying to figure out the best course of action, while trying to keep himself calm. Maya would only frown as she watched him pace back and forth in the elevator. They had been trapped for quite awhile, for how long she wasn't sure. Maya huffed a bit, as she didn't enjoy being ignored by her companion for the moment. Her chest would rise and her fists would clench tightly, as she took a deep breath before letting it all out in a loud manner.
MR. EDGEWOOOOOOOOORTHHH!!!!!Her voice would echo through out the enclosed levator and it's shaft as it carried her voice. Miles Edgeworth nearly stumbled back from the young woman's outburst, as it sent him back into the reality he refers to aos hell right now.
W-What!? He snapped at her.
Maya looked at him as her arms folded across her chest, "Gee, you don't have to yell at me."
His eye would merely twitch in annoyance at her words.
You're the one who yelled at me first if we have to point it out."Can you just sit down or something? You're making me uncomfortable walking back and forth like that." She said.
Edgeworth exhaled slightly, "I don't think it could get more uncomfortable than being stuck in a elevator right now."
His back pressed against one of the walls opposite of Maya as his crossed his arms across his chest. He looked at Maya as she sat there on her knees on the floor against the wall. She smiled at him.
"Thank you."
Edgeworth said nothing, as he turned his head to the side. Looking at nothing in particular, as her reassuring smile made him uncomfortable for some reason.
"I don't see how you can be so calm at a time like this." He stated.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I mean look around. We're in a elevator. The call button doesn't work and the panel is shot. I don't believe this is a time to really be so calm." Edgeworth looked back at her.
Maya blinked as she tilted her head a bit, "Well, there isn't too much else we can do besides wait for help. Nick knows we're here and will get help. I know. He always comes through."
That's true...as unorganized and bumbling as he can be at times Wright does come through..."I suppose you're right, but knowing him it's going to take awhile." Edgeworth sighed to himself.
"Well, Nick moves like a old man." She grinned. "Mr. Edgeworth do you know what time it is?"
"Hm?" He pushed his sleeve up off of his wrist slowly to reveal a gold watch that was securely wrapped around his wrist. "It's 3PM. We've been in here for perhaps two hours, since the case was suppose to start at one. Though, we were probably out cold for almost an hour before hand." Miles would shrug his shoulders a bit before pushing his sleeve back down, "The building might be unaccessable to get into due to debris, so it will probably take a team of people to come and save us."
"How long do you think?" Maya asked.
Miles looked up at the ceiling for a moment in thought. The light on the ceiling flickered a bit as it made a slight buzzing sound as it flickered on and off. "I wager five hours if we're lucky. It depends on how it looks outside."
Maya took note on his tone, as he wasn't too happy with his prediction. She had almost forgotten that Edgeworth wasn't fond of earthquakes at all, much less elevators. Though after all that has happened surely he still wasn't scared out of his mind in the situation that they were in. "O..oh, I see."
"Not exactly sure what we can do for five hours, besides sit here and wait." He said.
"Oh! I know!" Maya perked up. "Let's play I spy!"
Edgeworth looked at her in silence across the room. His face would fall a bit, at her words as his shoulders would slump down a bit.
I...is this girl serious?"I'll go first since I suggested it." She said, before she looked around the elevator. "Let's see I spy something....pink."
"..."
"Okay, now you try and think of what it is." She smiled widely.
She is serious...I don't believe this...Edgeworth didn't even want to dignify that question with an answer. This game was pretty much pointless and there wasn't quite a lot of things to 'spy' within this room.
"I'm not answering that, also there isn't anything pink in this room." He said.
"Come on! It'll help pass the time!" Maya said, "...and there is too something pink in here."
"No there isn't." He frowned.
"There is too! It's your suit!" Maya pouted.
"It's not pink, it's maroon." Edgeworth pointed out.
"Fine. I spy something
maroon then."
"It's my suit. Game over." Edgeworth looked at back at his watch, "That burned five minutes."
"Hey, wait I told you the answer. That doesn't count!" Maya protested.
Miles shrugged his shoulders, "You never stated any rules. You only said I had to answer and I did. So, game over."
Maya stuck out her bottom lip as she gave him a hard stare. "You totally cheated..."
"Call if what you want, but I still won." He rubbed in.
"Ohh, fine then. Do over! I spy something...purple..."
"...."
One hour later..."Okay, now I spy something...umm...."
"That's
enough already."
Miles Edgeworth could only take so much of this little game. He was pretty sure the girl was running out of colors, but she seemed to come up with something, which was pretty obvious since it was just the two of them there and not much of anything else here. He was on the floor with his back against the wall.
"Can we
please do something else? Just anything will do."
"Fine spoil sport." Maya stretched her arms above her head. "What did you want to do now?"
"Well, right now I would like to eat something." He mumbled.
Edgeworth now regretted skipping breakfast this morning. He was too busy preparing his case for today he didn't think it would take long. The most he had was a cup of coffee and that only went so far.
She then slipped her light blue back pack off of her shoulders and opened it, as she began to rumage through it. Funny, he didn't notice it earlier. Well, he was too busy wonderingwhen someone would find them and was frustrated by Maya's inane "I spy" game.
"Tada!" Maya cried out, as she brandished a square box in his face quite closely.
The man would blink as he looked at box. The front of it had a picture than no other but the Steel Samurai on the front of it. In big yellow words on the box read, "Steel Samurai Cookies! Chop full of chocolate chip shaped samurai cookies with a mint topping! Nothing but the best source of a energy snack for Steel Samurai fans!" Edgeworth felt his stomach turn a little at the words. It certainly didn't sound appetizing, plus he didn't eat sweets that much. Maya opened the box as she pulled out one of the cookies as she offered it to him.
"No thanks." He said.
"...but weren't you just saying you were hungry?" Maya looked at him confused.
"Yes, but I'd rather eat my own shoe than put that in my mouth." He said flat out.
Maya wagged her finger, "Okay, but don't complain later about wanting one."
"I wouldn't worry about that..." He looked at her, "Is that the only thing you have?"
"Yep, wish I had saved some of those Samurai burgers Nick bought me earlier, but I ate them all." Maya sighed to herself a bit thinking of the delicious savory burger she had the pleasure of devouring.
Edgeworth grimanced, "Ugh, that doesn't sound any more appetizing..."
Maya popped the cookie into her mouth as she chewed it. He watched as she made satisfied squeals as she at the cookies like it was the best thing she has ever eaten in her life. Miles sighed to himself as he found himself looking back up at the ceiling again. Never would he thought he'd be in a situation like this ever again. Was this some punishment for him or maybe a test from a higher power? Well, whatever it was he was going to accept the consequences that came with it, if any.
I'm not that scared little boy from back then anymore...I can't live like this anymore.---
"Wahhhh! M-m-mystic Maya!!!"
The young girl's cries filled the police station. Officers would wince at the girl's loud cries, as Phoenix would try his best to calm her down. Why did he have to tell Pearl the truth? He should have just lied and told her that her cousin was out shopping or something, but nooo...he had to tell her she was stuck in a elevator. Plus, he had to explain to her what exactly an elevator was.
"Pearls calm down! It'll be okay." He tried to consol her. "I'm sure Maya is...."
"Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! Mystic Maya!!!!" The girl rubbed her hands against her eyes as she cried harder at the sound of her relatives name.
Now I've done it...."Hey, pal! What's the's big idea of making little girl's cry?" Detective Gumshoe snapped at him. "Don't you have any heart?"
Why am I always the bad guy...? Phoenix grimanced.
Detective Gumshoe kneeled down to Pearl, "Hey, hey, calm down. Don't worry we'll get your cousin and Mr. Edgeworth out of there. You have my honor as a detective!"
The girl sniffled a bit, as she rubbed one hand underneath her eye slowly, "R-really, Mr. Scruffy detective?"
"Really! It's my word and no word is better than a detectives." He gave her a reassuring big grin that she returned with her own smile.
"So, Detective when can we send a team over to get them out?" Phoenix asked.
Detective Gumshoe put a hand behind his head and rubbed the back of his neck, "Well, um that's the thing pal. I don't know. Well, you can see it's pretty crazy here with the earthquake. We have our whole staff running around the city making sure people are all right and digging people out from debris that fell on them. The court house doesn't look like it's in good condition either for them to go into. We'll need some heavy equipment. Honestly, we probably won't be able to get to them til tomorrow or the middle of the night if we're lucky."
"T-t-tomorrow!? We can't leave them in there that long! Especially without any kind of food!" Phoenix held his head shaking it back and forth. "Edgeworth and Maya..."
"Mystic Ma-ma-yaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!"
Pearl busted out crying at the mention of her name once more, as her head lowered. Well, around this time Phoenix felt like crying himself and screaming too. He could only pray that they were all right and they could hold on for awhile.
"Look pal, there isn't much we can do for right now. Why don't you take the half-pint home and I'll call you when we're able to do something, okay?" Gumshoe slapped Phoenix on the shoulder and looked at him.
"Y-yeah, I guess you're right. Thank you Detective. Come on pearl. Let's go to the office and make sure the building is still intact." He said, leading the tearful girl towards the doors.
There really wasn't anything Phoenix could do for right now. He would just have to trust Detective Gumshoe and hope for the best. He was worried, but he didn't want Pearl to see that. If he started looking weak in front of her then she would surely be more upset than she already was.
I guess I should be thankful neither one of them is alone by themself. Phoenix thought to himself.
Two hours later..."Okay, I can't stand it anymore. Give me one." Edgeworth broke the silence.
"Mmf?" Maya looked up at him with a mouth full of cookies.
They haven't been talking for the past two hours and it was pretty silent, with the exception of Maya's constant cookie crunching and chewing. His stomach had been barking at him the whole time and desperately telling him that he needed something...no, anything in his stomach. Finally hunger had won the battle over his stubborness to eat something sugary and full of, god knows how many, calories in each serving. Maya raised a brow, before she swallowed the cookies.
"I thought you said you'd rather eat your own shoe before eating one of these." Maya would repeat his earlier statement with a cat like grin.
"Yes, but unlike those cookies my shoes are rather expensive. So, if you don't mind please hand me one." He asked holding his hand out.
"Fine fine." She said, before she turned the box upside down and shook it.
Finally, one cookie along with a few crumbs fell out into her hand. Edgeworth started at the lonesome pathetic cookie in her hand before slowly looking up at her.
His mouth opened as he managed to find the words, "Y...you ate the whole box..."
Maya laughed nervously as she closed her eyes, "Um, well....yeah, I guess I kinda did...."
Edgeworth sighed under his breath, "Well, it's better than nothing I suppose. Give it here."
"What...? You still want it? I mean, you don't like sweets anyway. So...I should eat it then." Maya held the cookie defensively.
"I'm hungry here and soon to starve if I don't eat something. I know you can't still be hungry after eating cookies and just burgers before coming here in the first place." He said.
"I'm a growing girl. I need my fiber and sugars." Maya stated, "Besides...it's the
last cookie..." She whined.
Edgeworth felt his mouth drop open at her words.
T...this girl's stomach is like a endless void...a black hole even....where is it all going...?"Will you quit being a little pig and just give it here." He said sharply.
Maya huffed, as she looked at him. No doubt offended by his little 'pig' comment.
"How rude. Well, let's see if you still want it then." She said boldly, as she parted her lips slowly and put the cookie up to them in a taunt.
"You wouldn't..." Edgeworth stared at her.
The girl would give a smile as she edged it closer to her lips as she breathed on it.
His eyes narrowed, "I dare you to."
Her lips would then pressed down on the cookie as she held it between her lips. She grinned at the man who stared daggers at her. Her fingers wiggling a bit, as she made a "nyah nyah nah" motion with them in a taunt towards him.
"Can't have it now, can you?" She murmured with the cookie between her lips.
Edgeworth found her little childish antics annoying, though if she wants to play games he could too. A sly smirk would play on his lips as he looked at her. Maya looked at him in confusion not really seeing what was so amusing to him.
Edgeworth smiled at her, "Who said I didn't want it....?"
His hand would reach out to her slowly, as his fingers cupped her chin. Her head would lean up slightly, as he lifted her chin up so she would be facing him. Edgeworth would slowly lean forward towards her, as he fingers caressed her soft chin. Maya's eyes grew large as the man had stopped so close to her face their noses almost touched. Much to her surprise his lips parted and would grab a hold of the cookie between her lips. He pulled back slowly, as the cookie broke in two pieces. Edgeworth would lean himself back against his original position against the wall and let his fingers slide away from the girl's chin. He chewed the cookie slowly before he swallowed it.
"Mm....as I thought too sweet." He said nonchalantly.
Maya was at a loss for words, not to mention a cookie. The young woman was left with a small piece of the cookie between her lips along with a red face. This would probably keep her quite for a couple of hours or if he was lucky the rest of the time that they were in here or maybe she'll behave a little better for now.
TBCEnjoyed it? It's almost 2:30 in the morning and I wanted to put this up while it was still fresh. Hopefully the next chapter will be a bit longer.
