I hope they do release it in western region. Not having a western release of PW x Professor Layton is annoying enough to me.

Damn Capcom, if it is in english already then why not?

Is there any evidence though that the reason that the reason that the 3DS is not region free is because there is a contract forbidding it because if not it could very well be the case that Nintendo could have the right to make the change on their own?

Do you mean release date because the Layton crossover has been announced for a Western release and has already come out in Europe? It will be released in NA some time this year though the exact date is still unknown.

You don't need to have bought the game; you only need to 1) to be registered on the site and, probably slightly more troublesome, 2) have a Japanese address (they ship prizes only within Japan, it says in the small print).

They really should have updated the art. It looks kinda weird.

Nevertheless if they actually brought this over here I could actually get a legal copy of the original trilogy. That'd be neat.

Although this seems to be a good version of a great trilogy, it is quite disappointing in terms of effort. Capcom really were lazy with this version.
GBA=>DS: added case 5-1 with touch controls + mic features
DS => iOS: added HD sprites + 皆で異議あり
iOS => 3DS: added a 3D feature (which most users will likely turn off after 5 minutes) + fixed a few problems.

It still only has 1 save slot for each game. And the English option doesn't allow you to switch between JP & ENG on the fly.

I might buy it when it's cheaper...

Not to mention, it would be such an undertaking considering all breakdowns would have to be fully animated, and Dahlia's would require some sick special FX to achieve the same level of atmosphere too I think :-)

I want this game so much I would import, but nintendo went back to that region lock thing... So I'm always depending on NA releases here in South America.

Personally, I would have preferred well re-drawn 2D sprites as opposed to 3D models. The current HD sprites vary in artistic quality. And I'm not a fan of Naruhodo's 3D model in GS5 at all. His GSvsPL was marginally better, but still not great.

I think Nicks 3D model in DD was perfect but the true thing that didn't look right was the artstyle from Takuro Fuse who hadn't drawn Phoenix in any of the other games. He was too bulky and I didn't like how his coutroom model tried to mimic oldschool Nick while his investigations model tried to look more Hobo Nick.

his artstyle in PLvsGS on the other hand, done by Kazuya Nuri, looked very good, much more in line with Kumiko Suekane's original GS1 nick but with the 3D model dragging him down.

A 3D remaster of the trilogy would be great as long as the art director had a good feel for the original character designs IMO.

The decision for multiple models came about because the perspective on the courtroom one didn't look right from the front, so they had to come up with a 2nd model to make his hair look a little spikier, among other little things. They weren't purposely aiming for any one particular art design in his case. Besides, his torso's figure barely changes between the two. The differences reside on the shape of his head and face. they had to change his face oh my what does this mean

I swear, for those seven years of lounging around an office "playing" piano and poker, he wasn't getting much exercise. Some level of depression must have gotten to him and he started drinking and eating more... and gained some weight. Now when he climbs a flight of stairs, he has trouble with just one.

Got my copy today and since I'm a huge nerd and stickler for details I'm playing it directly alongside a second DS running the DS version. I only played a little of the iOS version (since I don't have an iOS device), but I can already say this is a good improvement.

JesusMonroe wrote:
Edit: If anybody has it, do the Japanese voice clips switch to the English ones if you switch to the English text? Also, is the artwork the only thing that's updated or did they also update the voice clips and music?

They do switch to English, and all sounds, voices, and music are direct copies from the DS version (which is a good thing, at least in comparison to the iOS version). EDIT: I take that back, upon closer listening the 3DS music is actually cleaner. Sounds like they used the same HQ versions from the Sound Box!

The graphics are actually even further updated for localization from the DS versions. For example, when you first see the victim in case 2, the tiny piece of paper next to her has been updated to look more like "Maya", even though it's still too small to be legible. I don't know if this was also in the iOS version, but it's nice to see they at least put some effort into the "HD" graphics.

Defender123 wrote:
If anyone does get the game it would be interesting to know if any of the typos from the English versions have been fixed for this release.

I'm not far in, so I haven't noticed any yet. I'll post again if I do. Personally I doubt they're fixed, since they haven't done it over the many re-releases these games have gotten. AA2's extreme lack of commas will probably haunt even this version.

Deadpool 9 wrote:
Wow, I hadn't seen the English translations in the Japanese versions of the games, but I didn't expect them to be full translations!

Capcom really doesn't have an excuse to not bring the game overseas.

They really don't have an excuse. The games are in complete, 100%-localized English. It would literally be a copy+paste job. The main menu even uses the localized logos, for crying out loud! Just disable the language switcher on the main menu and we're good to go.

blahmoomoo wrote:
Hmm, so it seems like people are blinking and people have at least three frames of mouth flaps again... except Maggey, who has only two for some reason. Huh... wonder if it's just her, or if some/most/all single case sprites are like that.

I don't know the full extent of the sound effect issues, but the music sounds good this time, so that's good.

Is that the same script as the DS English localization? If so, well, you know. :sadshoe:

Yeah, many animations are missing frames. Blinking, mouth flaps, and other assorted animations are choppy compared to DS. This is all probably also in the iOS version but at least they made the necessary upgrades (like making all characters blink as opposed to only some). This old art just wasn't meant to be used in-game as it is, and I really wish they would've gone through the effort to draw in all the missing frames.

Another thing I've noticed missing is the "earthquake" screen-shake effect when surprising or sharp dialog occurs. I don't recall if iOS was missing this too. Kind of a bummer, because those scenes have way less impact without it. That said, I honestly did not notice that it was missing until I played the two side-by-side. Makes me wonder what the Edgeworth earthquake scene looks like if the effect isn't there. EDIT: Okay, so after quitting and booting the game back up to resume play today, the shake effect is back. A bug? I've also noted that performance actually drops slightly during some effects. For example, the big "Witness Testimony" animation takes the framerate down a bit. That's really bad, in my opinion. Still runs better than the iOS version overall, though.

My premature verdict, at least based on the first case-and-a-half, is that for the full AA experience you should still seek out the DS versions. They're just way more polished and complete. They're lower resolution, sure, but I'd argue that the older sprites have a lot more personality and charm to them (especially since they, you know, actually animate properly). These are nice to have on 3DS for veterans who want to play it again with different graphics (and without all the stupid iOS bugs), but I'm going to continue to advise series latecomers to go get the DS versions.

The DS versions, at least in the US, aren't even rare or expensive. I think they might've even gotten a recent reprint too, because the prices for AA2 (which was the most expensive one to find) plummeted. So you can now get every game in the series for around $12 each used and $20 each new (on Amazon, anyway). Even beyond that, they're still all on WiiWare for $10 each.

Thank you for the detailed impressions, Shugo! Curious, did they retain the chapter select option -- where you can choose to play investigation or court phases right off the bat -- like in the iOS version?

In addition to Pearls' Theme, I wonder if they brought back Pursuit ~ Cornered 2001 (Variation) toward the very end of GS3 (where you present your final piece of evidence to Godot)? The iOS version appeared to just use GS1's regular version of the theme. I'm doubly curious about this, because I don't believe the Sound Box release of the soundtrack even had the 'Variation' rendition of Pursuit ~ Cornered 2001 on its disc 3.

Nope, the menus are copies of the DS version's. None of the chapters are unlocked, either, so you have to start a new game from the beginning (though the ability to skip dialog is enabled from the start).

Also, I've run into the first error carried over from the DS script:

I'm nearing the end of case 4 and I can confirm that the script, at least for the first game, is 100% identical to the DS script, typos and all. Granted, the first game didn't have many major typos so it's not a big deal, but they're there if anyone was wondering.

Just an example:

Sales look fairly low, so I wouldn't hold your breath for a western release.

Apparently the 3DS one has incomplete sprite sets like the iOS one, so it's not all that necessary if you own that already.

I don't think they expected a large number of sales considering this is just a compilation of already released games. Also they barely need any work or money to release it here, so even quite low sales will earn them a profit.

I think those sales are alright. after all in japan they have been re-released countless times, isn't it? they've got GBA, DS, WiiWare, Android and iOs before this port. It's safe to asume that most fans of gyakuten saiban already own a copy. since we just got DS, WiiWare and iOs, I think the compilation would do it better around here.

I wouldn't say that. This version is quite improved over iOS in a number of ways (which I've already posted about in this thread so I won't bother repeating it all here). It is true that many animations are missing frames, but honestly nothing integral. Unlike iOS, they made sure to get what was needed added in, like blinking for all characters. Really, I don't even notice most of the missing stuff unless I'm playing it next to the DS version.

Having beaten the first game and gone partway through the second (while also playing most of it next to the DS version for comparison), I can say so far that this, unlike the iOS version, is an actually competent version of the trilogy. But if you have the means to get/play them, the DS and WiiWare versions are superior.

A lot of people give the iOS version a lot of criticism for the animation and the ugly sprites. But personally, its my preferred way to play the games.

- Playing on an ipad means I can finally read all the kanji without squinting and guessing.
- In the iOS version you can go straight to any case, and go to the start of any investigation section or trial section.
- ipad battery lasts a loooooong time
- I can't charge my Japanese 3DS whenever I go to Europe (DS charges fine though. It's so weird???)

I believe the problems with framerate for the 3DS version probably come down to having to render in 3D (which it probably has to do even when in 2D mode). How is the 3D by the way?

I started playing the iOS version, but then I got tired of it because of the low-quality music. Also, there's no AA Pursuit 2004 remix. Just the AA Pursuit.

The iOS version does have the advantage of resolution (as it is the 'HD' trilogy), but other than that I consider it the lowest quality version. Choppy performance, low-quality sound, broken sound effects, incomplete animations... The cons outweigh the pros to me. The 3DS version fixes a lot of that.

3DS games actually don't render in 3D when the 3D is off. This is why a lot of 3DS games switch to higher-quality graphics when 3D is turned off. GS123 actually softens the text with some kinda filter when 3D is off, for example.

The 3D in GS123 is alright, but nothing mind-blowing. It just layers the text box over the sprites over the background. There are some foreground elements like the attorney/judge desks and the witness stand. The 3D personally puts me off though, because it places small black bars around the background layer and sprites overlap outside of the black bars. But other than that it's pretty much what you'd expect. You can probably check out some screenshots in 3D on Miiverse.

Correction: they don't render in stereoscopic 3d. They obviously continue rendering in 3d when faced with 3d scenes.

And I wonder if the "filter" is as simple as font rendering using the doubled horizontal resolution.
