Thanks Ash! I found another Youtube playthrough (in addition to that twitch one Bolt mentioned), but it's just a playthrough--no commenting or anything. Since it seems like Retoruto is only going to LP the first chapter, I guess I'll watch that, and then switch back to the pure playthrough for the remainder of the game.
EDIT: Hmm, he's only done part 1... I guess it depends on the pace at which he releases the videos and at which I want to want them ^^" But it looks like he's LPed some of the Kindaichi games!!! Gotta definitely watch that~ Thx again, Ash~

It's definitely worth it if you get it for the vita since DR2 already came out and you can play it after DR. If you can't afford one I suggest playing the project zetsubou translation of DR for the psp emulator

I'm assuming you don't even have a PSP then, since you can easily (reversibly with no hardware mods!) mod those to play ISOs. If you do, I'd suggest trying that out before giving up.
Honestly, the nonstop debates are probably the main things you would miss out on, since those are the most interesting action parts. Mainly because they are similar to cross-examination in AA, but with an action twist. The rest of the action isn't really anything special.
Personally, I also like discovering things on my own during investigations, but I could do without it if it meant significant effort to play the game. I did get a PSP just for DR (and eventually P3P and a few other games) though, after struggling with the text issues in PSP emulators. They aren't that expensive used. But that's really up to you.
EDIT: since I'm talking in this thread again, might as well say that I'm playing DR2 now on the PS TV and am currently in the trial of the third chapter. But I don't really feel like saying much about it yet.
(speaking of, PS TV isn't that expensive. You may want to consider getting that and DR1/2 for Vita instead if you're able. Official support and all.)

It's not a mystery, but... it does try pulling a fair number of plot twists, but pretty much all of them are either incredibly stupid or just fall flat.

If you're still using a Mac, just don't bother. I had given up trying to run it on mine and just switched back to my old PC.
I'm not sure if this is just because I picked the "Gentle" difficulty, but I found the non-stop debates to be ridiculously easy. 80% of the time, I didn't even need to look at the debate to know what I'm supposed to point out.
