Matt turned to Sakura. "Yeah, if you threw a dumbbell hard enough you could break some fuses, I think. Depends on the fuse box, really."

Reminder: The fusebox was under the broken step.

"So maybe someone purposefully broke the step to access the fuse box and break it with the dumbbell?" SiRReN suggested. "Because the water wasn't rising quick enough to short it out?"

"If you THREW a dumbbell at the fuse box. It won't break if you just drop one over it.. well, I guess it depends on how distant it is from the step that broke, I guess. 20kg of force might do considerable damage depending on the height."

Cesar spoke up after being quite for a while. "It's still possible that it was the toaster that caused the blackout, right? I think whoever set this up was just trying to use the dumbbells to break the pipe...that would leave the reason for the broken step a mystery, though."

"If the dumbbells caused the fuse box to blow, that means we don't actually know when the water became an electrical hazard with the aid of the toaster." Sakura said. "That could have been before or afterwards... seeing as how it now seems unrelated to the blackout. Before means there's some water to use for washing."

"The toaster alone can't blow a fusebox all by itself. You'd need a lot of other devices."

"Sayako or Charlie, can you please repeat everything you saw when you investigated the basement again," SiRReN repeated. "I know this probably seems unnecessary, but it would be good to hear it all again from the people who were in there. Hearing about the pool again revealed the water was warm - it IS valuable to hear it again."

"Sure. When we entered the basement, we found it flooded, though the water hadn't reached the fuse box. Monomi-sensei said the water was electrified, at which point Monokuma drained it. There was a broken step about halfway down or so, right over the fuse box. The step just above the broken one was smudged with black paint. The fuse box had a dent in the top where one dumbbell sat, the other one was on the floor. The toaster was sitting on the floor, on top of the empty coffee bag, and it was plugged in. The water pipe was rusty and broken, I don't think it would have taken much to break it if you wanted. ...I think that's it."

"The coffee bag makes no sense. Also, you'd think that breaking a pipe would cause some noise.." Matt sighed.

"Anyway, it's very possible the dumbbells did break the fusebox. Though one of the dumbbells probably rolled off of the fuse box. The black paint smudge is still a mystery, though. Any ideas on it?"

"The coffee bag was how the toaster was brought to the basement in the first place." Sakura said.

"I don't know what the paint means, though. Maybe there's a different angle we could focus on instead? For instance, who flooded the room, and why?"

"That doesn't really sound like the fuse box was actually broken. You say there was just a dent on top?

"Monokuma, is the fuse box actually broken?" SiRReN asked. "Can you tell us that?"

"I wonder if the toaster was just misdirection?" Sakura said. "We spent quite some time thinking it was used to cause the power out, but then it turns out it may have just been brute force at the specific time it occurred. So maybe they wanted us to think the toaster caused it, to throw off the time it was set up?"

"Though any other theories would also be welcome." She added, addressing Sayako.

"I think it had to be plugged into the socket before the water rose too high." Sakura said. "Otherwise they may have gotten electrocuted in the process. So someone plugged in the toaster, broke the pipe, and then ran. This had to happen between 12, when the water was running, and 1, when it wasn't."

(The outlet for the toaster was well below the water level. And for the purpose of this mystery, plugged in toaster in water = electrical hazard forever)

"All this means it had to have been done between 12 and 1, I think. Which is a useful period to round it down to. This would have been before anyone was watching the corridors."

"Yeah.. that's not a convenient timeframe." Matt sighed.

"Now that I think about it, couldn't the toaster have been set as a diversive of sorts? The water being electrified would deter most people from the basement, and I guess that's what happened, huh?"

"What I'm getting at, is Monokuma confirmed the fuse box was dented and smashed-so probably broken with the dumbbell. If that's the case, then what's the point of the toaster? It makes a big difference as it means the killer could've either washed or not washed off paint here."

"It sounds like the toaster became a hazard once the water level reached the outlet," SiRReN said. "So it was plugged in between 00:00 and 01:00, and became a hazard likely in that time as well."

"If the water was electrified from 1AM onwards, that means no-one used it for washing paint off." Sakura said. "Maybe it was a trap? Someone had paint on them, and someone else wanted to trick them into electrocuting themselves? But... that's just a random theory, it doesn't really fit into anything mentioned so far."

"Like I said, maybe it was just to make us think it was the cause of the power out?"

"That's probably it, honestly. I can't think of any other reason why there would be a random toaster in the water. Either that or it's most likely a diversive. Anything else in the basement worth mentioning?"

"Alright," Sayako nodded after taking a deep breath. "Like I said, I might be way off the mark with this, but I think the toaster was a trap."

"This is what I think happened..."

"The victim and the accomplice plotted together against a target, presumably Arisato-kun. The victim gathered the dumbbells and delivered them to the accomplice to use as a weapon. The idea was probably something along the lines of the victim distracting the target while the accomplice snuck up behind, hidden in paint so they'd be harder to notice. The accomplice, however, for whatever reason, decided to attack the victim instead. A blow to the back of the head could cause bleeding from the eyes, right? The knife was used later to hide the true weapon. After all of this, the accomplice would have to wash off and get rid of the dumbbells somewhere, but the water wasn't working, so of course they'd have to go to the basement to see what was wrong...which would lead them right into the electrified water. The victim was planning on getting rid of the accomplice afterwards all along. Luckily for the accomplice, they fell through the stair, catching the previous step and smearing paint on it, but dropping the dumbbells in the process. They hit the fuse box, knocking out the power, including the electricity running to the toaster, which gave them some water to wash off in."

"...I probably have a lot of that wrong, but it's what I have so far..."

"We still need to figure out the paint and how it got in the basement," SiRReN said, rubbing her temples. "I really don't know how the paint got from the artroom to the basement step though. There's an empty can of black paint and it looks like the killer needed more because they made black paint by mixing a bunch of paints together, but we don't know how they used it or what they used it for.

"The idea that the person was covered entirely in it to walk around in the dark coincides with Charlie's smelling the paint, but then how did they get rid of it???"

SiRReN frowned, thinking. "Ryuji or Sakura, was there anything else in the kiln other than Jay? Did you guys take a look in there after getting him out?"

"Details of the plan aside, I think you have the right idea Sayako. The toaster can only work as a trap. And if this happened a good time before the 3 am death and the scheduled 1:30 am meeting then we finally have a motive. The killer discovered that Karega tried to kill them so they enacted revenge."
