The group shades in the next page. A message appears:

Charlie killed Van. She's going to kill again.

The rooms move like a sliding puzzle, moving the empty space. Already it's moved left, down, left, and down. Find Charlie's room and save the others.

Ryuji looked down on the floor, clenching his fists. "S-Sayako...s-she wrote that..."

"Wait! HOLD IT!" Jay screamed, "How did Sayako know the rooms had moved left, down, and left already? All she would've heard was Van's request to hit 'down.' What else did she know!?"

"She… must've overheard the conversation between Charlie and Van… they were in the same room after all…" Flo was in a state of shock. She hadn't believed her own words, her own accusation. And yet it was all falling into place.

"Th…then. Charlie was indeed the zero. That's what Van tried to do. Get Zero to kill so she wouldn't have to again… But that wasn't enough, Charlie had to do it again…"

"Another thing!" Jay added, still in disbelief that the note was real, "She told herself to 'find Charlie.' The obvious question is: How did she find out that Charlie was in Room 5? Also, also, if she shot into the room, how did she knw where Charlie would be? She could have easily hit Arthur or myself!"

Sayako, who seemed barely aware of the discussion going on around her, chose to abandon her podium at this time. She rushed over to where Sakura stood and wrapped her arms around her, squeezing the origami practitioner tightly.

"Of course I won't..." she whispered through her tears. "I could never, ever forget you... T-the time I spent with you... it made me happier than I ever thought possible..."

Sakura, who was similarly crying, hugged Sayako back. "Thank you... thank you! I f-feel exactly the same way! N-no matter what happens, no matter... no matter which of us carries on, w-we have to stay strong! F-for the sake of the other." It sounded somewhat like a resolution of previously faltering beliefs, coming from her.

"Mm..." She nodded and did her best to swallow her sorrow. "I-I'm just sorry... w-we were supposed to do so many things together... g-go to the beach, travel the world, find you the perfect match... I-I couldn't deliver on any of it. Promise... promise you'll do all of those things and so much more, okay? Just... just find happiness, no matter what..."

"Sayako..." muttered Jay weakly from his podium. His legs becoming numb and allowing his weight to collapse with a dull thud. The tears began and would not wane, flowing like a river of sadness unobstructable by the dam of emotional self-control. "No... nononononono... It wasn't supposed to happen like this! Sayako, you never deserved this kind of mistreatment! I c-can't... I won't vote for you. I can't stand to lose any more of my friends!"

"W-wait! Sakura's shoulder pain!" Jay cried out suddenly, "In Sayako's note it said to save the others... I don't care how she knew which room Charlie was in--well I do, but, uh... anyway--Sayako must have told Sakura about the plan, and I think Sakura tried to bust through the wall! But then... the gunshots... and if she had busted through, that'd explain how she was able to see Charlie, but that doesn't explain why Arthur didn't see a giant hole being made in the wall."

Sakura would have laughed if the situation wasn't so horrible. "D-do you really think a weak girl like me could even dent a wall like th-that? E-even Van had to use an Axe!"

"A-and I th-think that would l-leave bruises, anyway."

"You... you're not weak, Sakura," Jay protested, trying his best to control his emotions with little effect, having made his way to a kneeling position at least, "But... even if you couldn't break through the wall, I'm just trying to figure out how you guys could've seen Charlie, or even known which room she was in! Look at me trying to be logical in a situation like this!

Sayako, if you'd been able to think about it, Charlie never found any bullets. There was no way she could have shot at anyone unless she fashioned a bullet out of something.

The shots came from Room 8, and I know they must have scared you and made you react, but how would you know where to shoot?

Plus, if... if you hadn't killed Charlie then, we could have voted for her here... the killing was completely unnecessary.

I'm... no, we're about to lose another friend for no good reason! This is getting to be too much!"

"A-and thank you, Jay..." she added to the Wordsmith. "But none of us deserve this... It-it's just how it is..."

"This entire Summer School has been us losing friends for no good reason!" Sakura yelled, shooting Monokuma a loathing glare. "This time he even went as far as to mess with our heads just to get us to kill each other! None of this is right... Yet we still have to move forwards! Don't you get it? Give up now and we've lost! That's... that's the commitment I've made. E-even th-though it m-may soon feel too painful to even consider moving on... Don't let either of our deaths be in vain. Don't give in to despair. Please..." The energy at which she spoke had dropped steadily throughout, and the last word had come out as barely a whisper. After that she turned away from the 'courtroom' and leaned into Sayako's embrace, desperately unwilling to let her go.

Matt hadn't said a word for most of the recent events. The only thing he did was punch Monomi in the eye, but that's besides the point.

"Hmm.. I don't have anything to say in defense of Sayako, sorry." He said, sighing. "I can't really say much.. feels like everything that can be said has been said."

"Okay, so I might have figured out how they could 'find Charlie'," Jay reasoned, having regained his composure. The time for tears was later. For now, he continued, "If Sayako didn't know where Charlie could have been, she would have had to search for her.

How do you search for something in rooms next to you? You could make holes in the sides of the space and see if you notice anything.

However, shooting a gun would draw attention, but they didn't need to.

They could have, I dunno, burned a hole in the wall with a candle, or used the hammer and stake to chisel holes.

In any case, somehow they found Room 5.

How? The rooms started with Room 2 above Room 5 before the movements at 02:40.

If you don't see Charlie anywhere through the walls, the next logical step is to check the floor.

That's when they saw into Room 5.

You probably wouldn't notice a hole in the ceiling unless you saw a piece of it fall... Maybe Charlie did see that?

Anyway, once they found where in relation to Room 5 they were, and where they were in the 3x3 grid since 3 of the walls led to the outside (they were in a corner after all) and one to an unoccupied room, they could maneuver themselves in a way to get into the position to break into Room 5.

They were probably going to try to chisel their way into Room 5, but then gunshots started ringing out and they knew they had to act fast. They chiseled a hole big enough to aim through and took the shot.

But who's the one who shot? Sakura had the shoulder injury, but Sayako had the gun. If they worked together, then... I'm not sure how to prove it at the moment.

Do you see any problems with this theory?"

Arthur inhaled and exhaled slowly. "No, I think that, or something close to it, must be correct. But... there's not nothing that we have to go on. It's possible that the situation is as Sakura said herself. That her shoulder pain arises from having fired the antique pistol without having a proper grip or stance. Such a thing has caused shoulder injury in others, and unless we find an alternative explanation of it, we cannot dismiss that it was Sakura herself that killed Charlie in the way we've outlined."

Spoiler: Climax Reasoning
Flo put her hand to her head. “Here’s everything that happened in this case!

“It all started when Monokuma kidnapped all of us. He put us separately into three rooms. Van, Ryuji, and I were in Room 3.

“Somehow, Van figured out he was Zero. To protect us from himself, he tried to organize a way to get himself killed. Being as interested in architecture, it probably didn’t take him long to figure out the rooms moved. So after moving them in the ideal position, he knocked out me and Ryuji and moved into the empty space. He then told Charlie to press the command that would crush him.

“Charlie was distraught. The bloodstain on the floor probably made it apparent that she killed Van. She’d be the only one to remember, but that didn’t stop the killer from writing a note to themselves to remember everything that happened. Charlie took a gun, maybe as a precaution, but the killer took the other for themselves.

“Time passed and everybody in room 6 except Charlie lost their memories. However, the killer was able to catch themselves up with the note they wrote. This note probably also included the instructions for how to move the room.

“The killer moved the rooms, arranging it side by side with the room Charlie was in. The killer probably identified Charlie’s location by making a hole in each wall with the stake and hammer, and moving the rooms until they found her. And then using the same hole, lined up a perfect shot at Charlie’s forehead. The bullets were taken from Sakura, who shared a room with the killer.

“The killer effectively stole the ‘blackened’ status from Charlie, creating the perfect opportunity to escape on their own!

“It only could’ve been one person: couple with that, Sayako Amachi!”

Spoiler: Vote
“I-It’s not true…” Sayako stammered. “Please, you guys have to trust me!”

“I-I can’t vote for her…” Matt said. “Too many things just don’t add up.”

“I...I agree!” Sakura yelled.

“But it only could’ve been her.” Arthur murmured. “As difficult as it is to believe…”

“It’s not difficult!” Sayako was crying. “It’s impossible! I-I never would’ve killed any of you! I...I care too much about all of you. I would sooner die myself…”

“I...I’m having trouble believing this too.” Jay frowned. “I don’t think any of us could’ve done it but...the fact remains that one of us did.”

“Sakura, you were lying about your shoulder hurting, right?” Flo asked. “Please, we’re so close to the truth. We can’t make a mistake...we can’t afford to lose two people…”

“I-It wouldn’t be a mistake!” Sayako insisted. “All of you please trust me…there’s no way…”

“I do trust you.” Ryuji said.

Everybody stared at him, waiting for him to continue.

“It’s just like you told me...times like this are when we need to be strong. So I won’t run from this truth, as painful as it is.”

“Well spoken.” Arthur nodded. “But I do think this case is difficult to wrap without a motive…”

“None of us have a motive.” Ryuji said. “We don’t know why Sayako killed...but that doesn’t change the truth of this case. That’s why we need to vote for her...to find out ‘why’. For our sake, and for hers.”

“I can’t!” Sakura yelled. “T-That’s too cruel!”

Sayako was looking down with resignation. “H-He’s right. Now is the time we need to be strong and if even Arisato-kun can be strong in a time like this…” She smiled at him. “Then I will too.”

“You don’t need to say what we want to hear…” Matt began.

“I’m not. I’m doing this for me. Just like you guys...I want to find out why. And if I’m the killer...then I should be the one voted for.”

There were no more words spoken. Everybody just stood in silence until one by one they pulled their levers.

Spoiler: Post-Trial
“You guys were...CORRECT! Three times in a row now. The one who killed Charlie Bloom was Sayako Amachi!

Sayako just...stood still. She was pale, and at a loss for words. “So...that’s that then. I-I’m the one who killed her…”

“Yup! By the way, Sakura, you should really be more careful with your vote. Voting for yourself in a time like this? Did you really believe you were the killer?”

Sakura put her hands on her chest. “I don’t...I don’t know.”

“Goddamnit…” Matt said. “He has to be lying about this. None of us can know...none of us remember anything!”

“No.” Sayako said. “I don’t think he’s lying. And if I’m the one who killed Charlie then...I deserve this.”

“You don’t deserve any of this!” Sakura yelled. “T-This isn’t right!”

“Perhaps I should explain then.” Monokuma smiled. “First, there are a few details that you guys got wrong. Zero wasn’t Van, it was Charlie.”

“Eh?” Jay said. “That doesn’t make sense though, why would Van...he said he was going to save someone…”

“Correct! He was trying to save Charlie!”

“C-Charlie?” Ryuji exclaimed.

“Poor kid...he was feeling so lonely.” Monokuma sneered. “He spent this entire killing game doing nothing but be in the way. Bodies piled up, and then haunted house was the last straw. Hearing the voices of all the people he failed...hearing the voices of those who were dying in fires on the outside...a singular thought just kept returning to his head.”

I have to save someone

“A firefighter who can’t save people is like a fish who can’t swim. So when Van found out Charlie was Zero, he made sure he became her victim. And more than that, he made sure she would get away with it. A perfect crime using movements of a building that she didn’t know about, for something that only she’d remember. But something went wrong.”

Spoiler: Room 1
“I-I just…” Charlie pressed the button on the walkie-talkie down. “Van? Van!” She sunk to her knees, on the bloodstained floor.

“Oh god…” Slezak was turning green. “This...this can’t be right.”

“I...I can’t do this!” Charlie screamed. “I’ll...I’ll confess! But wait...I can’t...I can’t deal with that...”

“That?” Sayako asked.

“Being torn apart in a sewing machine...crushed...losing my nose? Oh god…”

Sayako and Slezak looked towards each other, unsure of what to do.

“Sayako? You have a pen and paper, right? We can’t forget what happened here…”

“I know…” Sayako was tearing up. “I’m thinking…”

“Please…” Charlie insisted. “I-I don’t want to hurt anyone else but...I can’t die like that.”

“You won’t.” Sayako insisted. “We’ll find another way, I promise.”

“Then I’ll do it.” Slezak decided. He ripped a piece of paper out of Sayako’s notebook, wrote a note to himself, and put it in his pocket. “We’ll find you a way out of this...I promise.”

“Jay, you can’t!” Sayako yelled. “Y-You can’t die for this!”

“It’s fine.” He smiled. “I-I don’t mind.”

Spoiler: Post Trial, Part 2
“Sayako wouldn’t have that, though. She ended up writing a note to herself, including the commands to move the rooms. She was the last to pass out, so she took the note from Jay and placed his gun on Charlie. She wouldn’t let anyone else take the burden.”

“S-Sayako...you...saved me…?” Jay was in disbelief.

“She said something about not wanting anyone else to die.” Monokuma shrugged. “Charlie’s death was all but guaranteed when she killed Van, so Sayako at least decided to grant her the mercy of a painless one.”

“...you d-did that for her?” Sakura was in tears.

“She was even going to confess immediately, but I figured that would’ve made for a boring trial. So I falsified her memory!”

“Y-You what?!” Matt screamed. “You bastard!”

“Not like it changed much.” Monokuma jeered. “We still reached the same conclusion, except now it’s more hopeless than ever!”

“I...I feel light-headed.” Flo said, grabbing a podium for support.

“We can’t kill her for this.” Arthur grumbled. “T-This isn’t right!”

No, it’s fine.” Amachi was clearly shaking, but she forced a smile for the class. “All I wanted to know was why and...now I do.”

“You don’t have to be strong for us, Sayako!” Ryuji yelled. “You’ve already done enough...you can let some of us take the burden!”

“I’m glad nobody else was killed...I’m glad we reached this truth. All I’ve wanted is for everyone to be happy and...I think you guys can do plenty fine without me. I...I’m sorry I broke our promise.”

“We c-can’t…” Matt said. “We can’t do this without you.”

She sniffled and looked at the class with serious eyes. “Matt, you need to find a girl with a spirit like yours. Maybe one who prefers colder seasons. Arthur, you need someone quiet like yourself, but just a bit more outgoing to get you to enjoy new experiences. Flo, you should look for somebody active, always travelling, always looking for something to do. Ryuji, I think you should find someone who makes you realize how special you are. Someone who’s always pushing you, and making you take big steps towards something better. Jay, find someone who laughs. That’s all you’ll need.”

Finally, she walked over to Sakura. “Sakura, you need someone rough around the edges. Someone who needs a gentle hand like yours and can reciprocate your warmth.” She smiled again, but this one wasn’t forced. It was as genuine as the sun and stars.

“...please don’t go.” Sakura could barely speak. “This isn’t right…”

“It’s just like you said. This game, as cruel as it is...it’s gotten me close to so many people. I’ve felt feelings for all of you that I thought I’d never get to experience myself. And now it’s my time to go, but…”

“N-No…” Sakura hugged her, not wanting to let go. “Y-You can't be the strong one right now. I-I don't want your matching, I want you."

"T-That's all I can give you. I wish I could stay here forever too. It’s ok to cry. But I want all of you to not mope around for me. Cry all you want, then move forward.”

“I think that’s enough of a farewell.” Monokuma decided. “I’ve prepared a very special punishment for the Ultimate Coupler! Just what you wanted, after all!”

“Matchy…” Sakura began. “Thank you for everything. We can’t thank you enough. And...we’re sorry. We’ll never forget you. Ever. You’ll be more than a memory to us.”

Everybody was crying now. Nobody could hold in their tears until the fatal words were spoken.

“Let’s go! IT’S PUNISHMENT TIME!”

“Bye, everyone.” Time froze for the final second Sayako Amachi spoke. “I love you.”

Spoiler: Baby Don’t Hurt Me
Sayako finds herself steering a ship down a long river. Up ahead is an entrance, sign plastered above that says “Tunnel of Love.”

The ship goes through the tunnel, Sayako constantly barely scraping by rocks as pieces of the ship got torn off. The river only moved faster and faster, and the rocks got larger and larger.

Just as she got into a particularly perilous area, a giant lit match fell from the roof and onto the ship, lighting it ablaze. Sayako made every effort to start putting the fire out, but then began to lose course of the ship. Everything was falling apart, completely out of her control.

Up ahead, she saw it--a sheer drop from a large waterfall. She made every effort to turn the ship...to slow it down, but nothing worked. Slowly, the flaming ship teetered over the edge and smashed into the water below.

Sayako found herself pinned under the rubble, desperately trying to find a way to swim out. Slowly and not panicking, she found ways up towards the surface.

Eventually, Monokuma appeared wearing a diaper and holding a bow and a set of heart-shaped arrows. He loaded them up one at a time and fired them at her. They scraped her skin and pierced her body, and eventually they pinned her clothes to the debris enough for her to be thoroughly stuck. She tried to remove the arrows from her clothing...she tried to find some way to the surface that seemed closer than ever...but it was futile.

Sayako began to panic. The air exited her lungs. Every second became more painful than the last and she couldn’t even scream anymore. As her vision dimmed, the last thing she saw was Monokuma notching another arrow. He let it fly towards her forehead.

Her heart stopped. It never beat again.

Spoiler: Post-Execution
It was over. Just like that, Sayako Amachi was gone. Unlike before, there were no feelings of anger. It was just...deep sadness.

“M-Matchy…” Sakura said through sobs. Everybody’s faces were covered in tears. The impact she had left on the group was profound.

“I-I don’t want to cry.” Matt said. “I-I can’t help it, though. Goddamnit, why isn’t this over?!”

“S-She wouldn’t want us to bottle our feelings.” Flo insisted. “What we need to do...is be happy. Live life the way Sayako wants for us. So we can cry as much as we want now, but then we’ll move on from it. The killing game will end, I promise all of you that.”

Jay clutched the patch in his hand. “You’re right.” He smiled. “Happiness is a choice. Let’s all get out of here...together.”

“Ryuji.” Matt said, bluntly.

“Y-Yeah?”

“...sorry for trying to kill you. It won’t happen again.”

“E-Eh?! Uh...sure thing! I mean, it’s fine. No use in keeping grudges.”

Everybody cried their hearts out, and even hugged and comforted each other. Truly they seemed closer than ever before.

“Mr. Monokuma.” Arthur broke the celebration. “I do have one question.”

“Yeah?”

“All of the rooms we were in followed a pattern of the students who had left us...so what was Room 3?”

“Huh?” Monokuma thought for a moment. “Oh, right. Her name was Connie, she used to be one of your classmates but uh...she attacked me so I killed her. So I just removed the memory of her from all of you.”

“What?” Sakura seemed indignant. “There was another one of us?”

“Yup! The amount of survivors may be getting low now but it’s not a problem for the killing game to continue. I brought in Alchie to replace Connie, I can bring in anyone else to ensure this killing game continues forever. Maybe even wipe your memories and give you guys a fresh start too.”

“You’d make us forget our classmates?!” Matt screamed.

“You can’t do that!” Jay insisted. “W-We’ve formed too many bonds together…”

“Do you think I care? How can you even say I haven’t done it before?” Monokuma shrugs. “The game continues as long as I’m not bored, and I’m faaaaar from bored. So enjoy your extended stay!”

Monokuma left the group, feelings of uncertainty growing in their hearts.

"...T-There's only six of us now," Ryuji sighed. "...Damn it."

"M-M-Matchy..." Sakura had thought she'd come to peace with the conclusion a while ago, thanks to Matchy's support. However, nothing could have prepared her for the immense feeling of loss she was now having to deal with. Suddenly, without another word, she bolted from the trial area and ran all the way to her room, where she shut herself in.

Arthur merely watched as Sakura ran back to her room.

After a long while, Arthur finally said. "I'd like to take Sayako's journal. If no one has any objections. She asked me to do something and I think it would help."

Without waiting for a reply, he fished it off of her body, and retreated, leaving the courtroom.

Ryuji looked at Sakura as she bolted out, forcing his tears back in.

Quote:
She sniffled and looked at the class with serious eyes. “Matt, you need to find a girl with a spirit like yours. Maybe one who prefers colder seasons. Arthur, you need someone quiet like yourself, but just a bit more outgoing to get you to enjoy new experiences. Flo, you should look for somebody active, always travelling, always looking for something to do. Ryuji, I think you should find someone who makes you realize how special you are. Someone who’s always pushing you, and making you take big steps towards something better. Jay, find someone who laughs. That’s all you’ll need.”

"...S-Sayako..." Ryuji said with sadness, before confidently staring at the others. "E-Everyone! W-We can't let this happen again! No matter what! S-Sayako wants us to find someone important to us, s-so my promise to Tatsuya has an even stronger meaning to it now...t-this is our promise to Sayako, s-so let's all escape together, alright? We can't keep going on like this..."

"G-guys," Jay spoke up, between sobs as his last memory of the Coupler kept replaying in his mind, "I-I have a confession to make. N-no, it's not about Miss Amachi." He chuckled. Even in the midst of sadness, he still found the strength to laugh. He knew Sayako would have wanted that.

"B-Before Monokuma shooed away the ghosts, SiRReN and I embraced... and I got to bear witness to her passage." He raised the patch high into the air, the white lettering intended to grab the students' attention. He cleared his throat and recounted.

Spoiler: SiRReN's Last Goodbye
Jay wrapped his arms around SiRReN's ghostly figure the same way she had done. He felt the tears beginning to come down once again, but this time they were tears of joy. It was a strange feeling for sure, and Jay thought he'd feel cold, but his heart warmed up so quickly that he didn't notice any temperature change. His face lit up like a Christmas tree as he pretend-patted her on the back with his hand--the hand in which he still held the green [KEEP HOPE ALIVE] patch he'd made during his time with her making outfits for the banquet as a reminder of his brother. As Jay remained there, he couldn't help but comment with a hoarse laugh, "Man, I wish I could just lock your spirit up inside of this like a Pokéball and release it whenever I needed someone to comfort my friends or myself... But instead, I guess I'll just enjoy this while it lasts." After another tender moment, he loosened his 'grasp' on her, waiting for her to do the same, as if she was still tangible.

SiRReN pulled back as Jay did, but let her hands rest on his shoulders. "I wish you could Jay, but you'll be all right without me. Just remember what I taught you, and hold onto HOPE. Hold your badge tight and remember me."

She looked up suddenly, her brows furrowing as something Jay couldn't hear began calling out to her.

"I'm sorry Jay, it's time for me to go," she told him. She began to float upwards, her hands trailing down off her shoulders as she rose. "Don't lose HOPE, Jay. Someday, we'll see each other again, I'm sure." One last smile graced her face, and then she began to fade away until she was gone.

"I... I..." Jay could barely speak, the tears overcoming him once again as he clutched the patch hard to his chest. "I got to help her move on! Guys, I did it! SiRReN was able to leave this world behind in the best way possible! Even Monokuma couldn't take that away from me. Ev-ever since I was little, I'd always dreamed of seeing ghosts. I was fascniated by ghost stories and the paranormal. I knew ghosts stuck around on this plane for one reason or another. Also, you know how much I love to help others. O-one of my life's goals was to one day meet a spirit and help it 'complete its mission' and move on peacefully... And I did it! I really did it! I AM USEFUL!!!" Jay jumped into the air in delight, before accidentally flubbing the landing and slipping, crumpling to the ground, bursting into childlike laughter. "I wish I still had my PKE meter... That thing would've been going crazy in here!" he shouted finally after calming down. He stood up and resumed his stance at his podium, his confidence restored. He declared, "Let's all make it out... for Matchy, Charlie, Van, Alchie, Crimson, SiRReN, Cesar, Subaru, Karega, and Connie. But not Cox. Screw Cox!"

"Y-yeah, that was a bit harsh I suppose," Jay admitted, coming down off his mania enough to realize what he had said, "I do hope Solomon's happy... wherever he is. I-I'll be the first to admit that I am heartbroken at Sayako's death. Sh-she was becoming my new best friend, and I felt like I could almost talk to her about anything... but it seems like it was the same for you guys too. I... I'll never get to know how her hypotherical question turned out... I'll never be able to look at couplers the same way again. Not after her, so eager to learn about people, so willing to help others achieve happy relationships... She was stolen from the world way too soon." Jay was back to tears again, the elation he'd felt now long gone.

"Again… and again… and again… how long? Is this going to go on until only two of us remain? We started with 16, 17 with this Connie girl. We're nearly down to a third… Matchy was such a sweet girl. Why her? And why, of all people, did Cox get to graduate? Ughhhhh, we can't let this happen anymore. We can't just sit back and watch our friends drop like flies, wondering if we'll be next. I…"

She turned to Monokuma.

"As I said, we will stop you. I won't let this happen anymore. Mess with our bodies, mess with our minds, bring in new classmates to replace all ones, it doesn't matter; this must stop."

"...N-None of us are gonna kill...t-that's for sure."

With that positive attitude, Ryuji headed out of the courtroom.

"I never did get my bath..." he sighed, walking out to the hot springs for the night. "I should fix that..."

Jay sulked back to his room. He wanted to be alone once again, at least to get some rest. He'd been asleep many times that day, but it was not restful. The voices had nagged at him, torn into him, and tried to grab the heart right out of his chest. He finally arrived at his room, unlocked the door, and went inside. The door closed and he was once again back in his one place of respite.

"Sa... Sayako," Jay muttered quietly to himself, gripping the patch as if something would jump out of it if he didn't, "I told you that what someone feels should come before what you think. Well right now, I feel rotten. You... you always had such good advice, such interesting comments, but in the end... we couldn't save you from this place. I know you'd say you think we should carry on and remember the good times we had with you. And hey, I know I said I liked you, but I'm nobody special. I'm sure everyone else here liked you too. I feel like you were the most likable among us. When I get out of here, I'll do my best to remember what you taught me. I-I'm sure I'll find someone... who gets me." Jay closed his eyes, sighed, and returned the patch to his belt pack. He plopped down on his bed, still fully-dressed, and drifted off to sleep.

Ryuji groggily got out of bed, barely able to sleep from the night before, as he walked towards the cafeteria for the morning meal. Looking around him, he realized that the cafeteria that used to seem so full would now hold only 5 others.

"Hi," Jay greeted lazily as he entered the cafeteria and ordered his meal. Was there even any point to saying 'Good morning' anymore? He'd already lost two of the people he most cared about, so he was understandably demoralized. Turning to Ryuji, he asked, "You look tired... can I help you in any way?"

"N-No, thank you," Ryuji said. "I-I'll be okay. I'm Ryuji Arisato, the Ultimate Actor! I have to stay positive...that's what an entertainer does."

Flo sat by herself, as forlorn as ever. She saw Jay enter the room. Jay, caring about the deceased more than anyone, he was still living every day to its fullest. Flo needed to know how, and why. She grabbed his arm and pulled him aside.

"Jay…" she whispered. "Tell me, how are you able to remain so… what's the word, in a situation like this? Sakura tried to pull a Subaru on us, and Ryuji got Alchie killed. And with only six people now…"

Flo held onto Jay's shoulder for support.

"I want to stop Monokuma, I really do. And I'll do absolutely anything. It's just that, how can we fight him when we can't even trust each other now…"

"A-ah!" Jay gasped as he felt a hand grab his arm and pull him away from the counter as his meal was placed down in front of him, "Fl-Flo..." He pulled away long enough to grab his tray and place it on a nearby table. She was right--Jay was remaining oddly positive despite the events, and even he wasn't sure exactly why, but he'd try his best to explain, because that's what Wordsmiths do; they explain things.

"I... I'll be honest. This has hit me harder than you can imagine. But even more than now, we MUST trust each other. None of us have tried to kill. That should give you some comfort, right? Even Ryuji, being a part of Van's plan, was only going to give him an alibi. He wasn't going to do the dirty work himself.

Listen. My 'naivete' has gotten me through life thus far. I wouldn't be where I am today if I let how profoundly screwed-up the world is these days get to me. I don't... I don't want to die. I'm scared, Flo, but if I let it overwhelm me, I'll be stuck in my room until I starve to death or someone breaks down the door. So I just... believe. Believe that everyone's good, and if that ever comes back to bite me, at least I won't be here long to regret it."

Ryuji, overhearing the conversation, couldn't help but speak up.

"I-I'm sorry for betraying your trust, a-and Arthur's too..." Ryuji said to Flo. "T-that's the greatest regret I've ever had so far...because I had time to think about some stuff. Before this, I only lived for the sake of Tatsuya...I-I did everything for him, and he's still the most important thing in the world for me, but I remembered another promise I made him...t-that I'd make friends and care about other people...At this point, if you don't trust me, I can't change that, but..."

Ryuji buried his face in his hands, blushing. "B-But I love you guys very much!! Y-You're the first people w-who accepted me...s-so, please trust me again..."

"Th-thanks Jay," said Flo. She stepped away from him. "I guess it's like how smart people are always sadder than everyone else. They think of things from every angle, and most of them aren't happy. They keep thinking and thinking, and they get sadder and sadder."

Flo turned away from him. He was the man who had caught SiRReN, she knew he was no fool but…

"But… blind trust. I don't know if I can do it. I trust you though, I know you'll find a way through this. Even if I can't trust everyone, I can at least trust someone, someones."

She looked at Arthur and Matt.

"Despite my doubts, I should focus on the positive. The power of trust and teamwork can overcome Monokuma. I keep thinking in the box too much, that things must work according to the rules I see fit. But life doesn't work like that. Even when you think of every possibility, life can throw a curve ball at you. Nothing is for certain. But the one thing in this room that is, is your trust for others… as is mine. You are strong Jay, in your ability to keep on believing no matter how many times you get betrayed."

Flo looked at Ryuji and Sakura now. Jay was right, they may have screwed up but they weren't killers. They were still good people at heart.

"I… forgive you," she said to them.

She stood tall with renewed energy.

"Thanks Jay, I needed that."

She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek… almost. She stopped last second and pet him on the head instead.
