9 sets of footsteps ran through the mansion, eventually all congregating in the same area.

"Ah!" Helios shouted. "Greetings, everyone! I see 9 faces still...I trust everything went well?"

"Yup!" Bradley shouted. "We-" Bradley was cut off as he coughed up blood into his hands.

"B-Bradley!" Ghost shouted. "Are you a-alright? Can you breathe?"

"I-I'm fine..." Bradley assured.

Half the group immediately checked their watches: 4:28. They already had less than half the time left.

"Let's stay calm." Adriana advised. "Let's share everything we learned. Then we can try our hands at the trial."

Bradley sighed "Aww I had just cleaned my hands too." He muttered wiping them off on a stone pillar "Our room was a big garden! And I had a frisbee which we used to play with Einstein who was very good at catching things!" He said petting the dog proudly. "Also we found a book on Morphogenetic field theory which had the key in it we sent to you." He folded his arms crossly "There was also an anagram that turned out to be 'six feet under' but we tried digging a bit yet couldn't find anything."

"We went to an arcade," Helios explained, "Nothing particularly important happened while we were there. We just played some games, like foosball and Candyland. Turns out that Ghost is really good at that stuff," he mumbled irritably.

"Anyway, point is I solved that 'Russian Roulette' anagram which Albert already told everyone about, I think. We also noticed that Albert had a headset on him, which he's been using to communicate with the outside world! Err... well, he says it doesn't work, but that seems a little suspicious. Perhaps he can tell us more?"

Turning to Bradley, Helios asked, "Morphogenetic field theory? And what would that be?"

"Uuhhh...." Bradley looked to Adriana and tried to remember "Miss Adriana already knew about it so we really just got the key from the book. It's some kind of social phenomenon where creatures can communicate messages over long distances on a societal level?" He suggested looking to Adriana for confirmation. "What was the key used for anyway?"

"There was also a cat! A plastic cat, with a plastic prop of poisoned cat food. Inside a box!" Ghost added helpfully. "Helios said it had something to do with quantum mechanics but I had no idea what he meant by that."

"Some door." Helios said, "Admittedly, I'm not 100% of the details. I believe it may lead to whatever this 'trial' is, though. In any case, Albert was the only one who could open it without getting a painful shock." Helios rubbed the palm of his hand, likely recalling a painful experience.

"We just got some big library." Violet explained. "There were some newspaper articles on, like, a car crash and a serial killer or something. There was an anagram that said something like 'sonata carlos', and we tried solving it, but nothing worked.

"Basically, we just ended up wasting our time until the door opened."

"Oh, right. I'm not sure where quantum mechanics came from," Helios explained, "I think it must be something I came across during some private research I conducted. I had forgotten all about it, but that game of Candyland we played jogged my memory!"

"The truth is, I think I know something about morphogenetic field theory... but I don't think I'm emotionally prepared to tell the story now..." A solemn look crossed Helios's face. "Spare me a few moments first, if you will."

"Um... so..." Ghost began awkwardly, casting around for a topic in the meantime. "No-one else found a 'trial' door? I thought everyone might have, but maybe it was just us."

Emma shook her head at Ghost's question. "No, we didn't find any doors like that in the library. We did find a key with an '8' on it, but nothing to use it on. It sounds like this 'trial' is supposed to be done by all of us at once rather than by groups, so only one door had one. "

Suddenly, Helios was up on the balcony, staring out over the room. He looked as if he was staring through the wall, to some point far off in the distance that not even he could locate with certainty.

“It was many years ago, back when I was still a lawyer,” Helios began, speaking in a tone like he was honoring a fallen soldier. “I was attending a family reunion around the holiday time at my late grandfather’s home. Back then, he was divorced, you see, and his wife hadn’t taken it well. Fortunately, she had just been arrested for an unpaid parking ticket, so it was finally safe enough for us to go in and crack open one of his old kegs…”

“It was around that time that my aunt Bobetta asked me to play a game with her great nephew. His name…was Boris. Of course, I agreed, and the young lad chose the game Candyland… I thought I’d be in for a quick, painless game, but I was wrong…so very wrong…”

Spoiler: Candyland
“Mr. Tesla? …It’s your turn.”

Helios was hunched over the table, his face parallel to the board. Crushed remains of a green and red cookie were scattered around the tops of his fingers, and his other hand was clenched tightly around an empty glass of bad tasting punch. Gentle sobs could occasionally be heard in the room.

“Are you crying?” Boris asked, “Dad says men aren’t supposed to cry.”

“Th-That’s toxic masculinity!” Helios shouted, getting up and pointing. His face was clearly livid, though tears peeked from the corners of his eyes. “Besides, I think some nutjob spiked this stupid punch!”

“Well, mom says you’re not supposed to drink in front of minors.”

“You think I wanted to?” Helios asked, clutching his forehead. “Ugh, I hate this side of the family. They’re all insane!”

“Mr. Tesla, it’s your turn. You need to take a card.” Boris interjected. “I think you’ll find what’s on the other side quite interesting…”

Helios stared in horror at the deck. He slowly reached out, taking the next card with a trembling hand. Helios turned the card so the underside was facing him.

“Two oranges, huh?” Boris said, sounding bored. “I wonder where that lands you…”

Indeed, the other side of the card showed two orange squares. Helios looked up at the boards and gently grasped his piece. He slowly moved it forward on the path.

“N-No… NO!” A desperate cry escaped his lips.

“Aw, geez, you hit a licorice space, huh? Boy, that sucks,” Boris said, staring at his phone disinterestedly. “Looks like I get to draw two cards…”

“NOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

“That day haunted me for years… It was like the kid knew the deck before we even started playing, even though I was the one who shuffled it!” Helios leaned over the railing. “I mean, I still totally won, you can believe that…but still, I had to know what happened. That’s why I did some research.”

“I didn’t really understand any of it, though,” Helios admitted, “But I remember ‘morphogenetic field’ theory being mentioned, something about a cat in a box that was both dead and alive at the same time, and apparently people called ‘espers’ who could, like, magically cheat at card games. Yeah, it was really confusing. Then someone on the site mentioned Fernando, so I cleared right out of there!”

“Anyway, what were we talking about again?” Helios looked around, a smile on his face.

Midge crosses her arms, staring intently at Helios. After waiting for a very long time, she shakes her head and smiles.

"You're right that's kind of weird. Maybe Ghost is like Boris too."

She raises her eyebrows expectantly in silence.

"Yeah... Anyway, the articles we found covered a few different things. First, we found an investigation into an car accident involving someone named Stanfield from nine years ago. It was being investigated because for some reason they suspect it may have been foul play."

Midge pauses for a moment, looking at the ground.

"Also on that same news paper was something about 'The Dissector' who is a serial killer who cuts open their victims on the stomach, leaving them open for authorities to discover. They only target homeless people though."

"There was one about two people in the CDC being taken to an off-sight location to be executed fourteen years ago. A second article said that fourteen people had disappeared recently in the CDC, and that was really all there was to them."

"Though, I suspect there may have been an outbreak of a deadly virus... Blight-Y?" she says in a loud, paranoid whisper.

Adriana shot a concerned look in Helios' direction.

"No doors where we were in the garden." said Adriana. "Just a garden with some (rather bug-infested) vegetables, a creek, and a very muddy patch."

She threw a bemused look at Bradley, apparently forgetting that moments ago he'd coughed up blood. "As you can see."

Adriana drew in a breath. "We found a book on the subject of Morphogenetic Field Theory that... may shed some light on why we're here..."

"I should explain (although, really, I'm not an expert; this is just something I heard at university some years ago)-- some time ago, it was hypothesized that species of gregarious animals could develop a sort of... shared consciousness space-- a so-called 'morphogenetic field'. It was thought that those animals could share bits of information, or experiences or memories, with each other through this morphogenetic field, even over great distances. It was even thought that humans have developed that ability-- some attributing the feeling that you're being watched to this phenomenon."

"Anyway, the book we've found was on that subject-- it details in some greater depth what I've just said, but it has the following passage that I think relates to us specifically..." she cleared her throat, opened the book to the appropriate page, and started reading:

The Morphogenetic Field by G. Pruitt wrote:
It's said that people who can access the morphogenetic field are called 'espers', however this is somewhat outdated. While some people have greater talent, every living person has some innate ability to access the field.

Those who live their lives surrounded by danger like firefighters are said to have an greater proclivity to access it. Yet there has also been great success in field access by those infected with viruses, notably Blight. Similar results have been found with those diagnosed with terminal illnesses.

"I'm sure I don't have to tell you all how that relates to our current... predicament." she finished.

“S-Stanfield…? Sounds familiar”, Albert murmurs to himself. “B-but yeah, we didn’t find much in iur room other than the trial door. Nothing out of the ordinary.” He folds his hands. “A-and my headset is just a good luck charm, nothing special about it.”

"So it's like, mind reading and stuff?" Violet frowned, twisting her hair. "But if it says people with Blight-Z can access the whatever-it's-called field, then why can't we? I mean, suddenly being able to use ESP is something you'd probably remember.."

Adriana frowned. "It might not even be true, Violet. But maybe whoever brought us here thinks that it is... and had access to a facility like this one... and is in a position to infect us with a deadly virus...?" She seemed less convinced as she went on.

Bradley mulled it over "Well I suppose we all count as 'terminally ill now so there's plenty of opportunity for us to develop powers right? But yes we should probably *cough* move towards the trials and get those cures soon." He said before moving over to Helios and patting him on the arm.

"It's ok Mr Helios, he does sound like a real cheater! Especially if he had special powers helping him to cheat." He said reassuringly. "But come on, we should pick up the cures." He said excitedly almost making a break for the door before skidding to a halt.

"Although...Mr Alberts headset and talking to people in the outside world is a little concerning."

"I was hoping to keep quiet about it..." Ghost said quietly, the angle of their helmet suggesting they were looking down at their feet. "I didn't want to cause a panic. But we couldn't take any, anyway, they were behind a locked door. The '5' key didn't work on it, and we didn't find any others in the room."

Adriana considered Null's words of caution. "What were the anagrams in your rooms. Albert's had 'Russian Roulette', and ours had 'Six Feet Under'. What was the one in Violet's room?"

"Other than the key, and the book, the only thing that happened was this really creepy moment when an image of two boys were shown-- Teddy had a really strong reaction-- and called them pictures of his kid..." she said simply. "I thought he would bring it up, but if Null took other pictures like that... who knows what that could really mean?"

“Well, there’s still some other stuff…” Null said warily. “But I suppose it’s small enough where it can be said later.”

“Ugh, whatever!” Violet shouted. “Can we just go already?”

“Yeah yeah. I’m on it.” Albert said, rolling his eyes.

All 9 players walked to the game room. At the back there was a door labeled ‘THE INVESTIGATOR’. Albert inserted the key into the slot and...it opened.

The group expected an announcement. Something. But it was just a cobweb-filled room, illuminated by only a single lightbulb hanging from a chain above the table.

The table had a lone metal box on it. Albert walked up to it, unable to keep his hands from shaking. He flipped it open and inside was…

A revolver. It was latched to the box, presumably to be unlocked when the trial would start. There were six seats at the table…

“Russian Roulette.” Helios swallowed grimly.

“Hello. Albert.” Null’s voice filled the room, Albert’s name sounding almost punctuated. “Welcome to your trial.

“What do I have to-?”

“This trial will have SIX players.” Null just continued on, not listening. “Here are the players.”

A small monitor descended in the room.

Spoiler: Players
1. Albert
2. Teddy
3. ???
4. ???
5. ???
6. ???

“Vaccines will be rewarded to the winners.” Null added. “To participate in the trial, you need FIVE votes. You can vote one at a time, or put a set of players in at once. Decide what’s best.”

"Oh dear..." Ghost muttered uneasily, looking around the room fruitlessly. There was clearly no other option here.

"W-well... I don't need a vaccine. So I shouldn't participate, I think?" Ghost then suggested. "After that, well, it would be faster to vote for the two people who aren't participating, less voting rounds that way."

Bradley gave the revolver a wary look before looking at Violet with slight embarrassment. "I'm not quite sure what 'Russian Roulette' is...but if it gets me a cure I'll play!" He volunteered with a determined expression on his face. "I-I mean...that is if we get a child vaccine and an explanation of the rules first....that would be helpful." He said keeping his eyes on he revolver.
