"Oh I'm familiar with the joke. I'm pretty sure it has a punchline, actually, maybe you've never heard the whole thing. Seems like I've heard a whole lot more of it than you have, would you like me to try and explain it?" Midge says plainly.

"The ending is really, really good."

The conversation was cut short by the sound of something small clattering to the ground. Everybody's eyes shot down...it was the vaccine caps.

That was the moment when Albert regretted taking the mask off. The first thing Bradley did at that moment of distraction was whip out Adriana's pepper spray and press as hard as he could.

It was a terrible idea, and the room immediately filled with the noxious fumes. Albert bolted for the door, trying his best to aim one of the vaccines towards himself. But Midge, fighting through tears, quickly tackled him by his midsection. The vaccines went flying out of his hands.

Emma quickly dove and caught one of them, but the other clattered onto the ground. The tiny sound was almost thunderous.

"Emma!" Midge shouted, trying to pin Albert. "The vaccines!"

"The vaccines...th-they're..."

Spoiler:
"They're fine!" Emma announced, coughing from the gas. Quickly she stuck her head out of the room and coughed some more. "Both of them are still intact!"

"N-No!" Albert shouted. "Those vaccines are mine!"

Midge didn't listen, just kept her eyes closed as she dragged Albert out of the room. Shielding her eyes as best as she could, Emma ran back in and grabbed Bradley, who was writhing on the ground.

***

After some time out of the room, everybody had settled a bit. Their eyes were still stinging badly, and Bradley needed to stay by Einstein because he was affected badly by it.

"We need to decide what to do with him." Midge sighed, indicating Albert.

"If we don't give him a vaccine, he'll die anyway." Emma pointed out. "There's not much need to murder him."

"Please." Albert looked at them with genuine eyes. "I know what I've done, but Blaketon is innocent. You can't punish him for this, he deserves a vaccine."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"Miss Midge?"

"Yeah, Bradley?"

"If we decide to kill him...can I have your knife? I wanna do it."

Emma's eyes widened. "Bradley, there's no way we could let a child do this."

At that comment, Bradley started to cry. Tears and snot rolled down his face. "Why? H-He killed Mister Teddy and V-Vi-Violet and...Ghost." He sniffed again. "I want to make sure he dies."

What do we do?

Midge looks at Bradley pensively and then over to Emma.

"I sort of agree with Emma. I mean, that feeling of killing somebody, it's something that I would advise you steer clear of. Seriously, you know?"

"Look, it screws you up in a big way, and I'm sure this whole thing has already kind of been a nightmare for you, but at least you can leave as someone who never did much out of vengeance or wrath," she says, her eyebrows sadly drooping downwards.

"No...no...he...he killed Ghost...Violet...it's not right. He doesn't deserve anything." Bradley sniffed and wiped his eyes "You two should use the vaccines...maybe we'll still find a child's vaccine somewhere, but Mr Albert deserves nothing" Bradley glared at the pitiful man "We should lock him in the freezer, he'll die in there from the cold or the Blight but he won't be able to hurt anyone else."

Midge bites her lip.

"If only everyone understood complex philosophical questions and tell me exactly what the consequences of these are."

"Okay, so just so we're clear you're not going to try and kill Albert yourself, right? I mean, after all he did to us, I don't feel great about living just to turn into himself again if it's so clearly miserable again, so I don't know if I object to killing him, what I object to is you pulling the trigger when you've got a big life ahead of you."

Emma turned to Bradley. "The vaccines were the only reason he was a threat. If we use them now, we would have no reason to even lock him up. Revenge isn't going to help us now." She said in the most gentle tone she could.

She held the vaccines in her hand, then looked over to Midge. "We need to decide what to do with these. There's no point in waiting now that we can use them, so...are we just going to use them on ourselves?" She asked.

"No no...my...mother...she taught me killing was wrong and bad and I...I'm calm now...I just didn't know what I would do earlier" Bradley smiled as brightly as he could for Midge but it was a pained smile. "Let's just put him away...it's what you do...with bad people and murderers right? They go to jail. Then...we bury the bodies...you two should take the injections and we can lay Miss Adriana and...Ghost..." He swallowed hard "Then...maybe we'll find one of the child medicines."

"I don't know what feels right to do with the vaccines," Midge sighs. "It feels very wrong to let either of you die. Hopefully we can find more."

"Also, sure, Bradley. Emma and I can take care of Albert, you can lay the others to rest I suppose."

"No..." Bradley said simply "I want to see him locked away. We can weld the door shut with the laser cutter." He stood up "He needs to be punished so we will all see him locked away." He gave Emma a direct look "Or I'll kill him anyway."

He turned away embarrassed "Besides I-I'm too small to move the others myself..."

"What? I thought that's what you suggested. Anyway, uh, we can lock him in the freezer, that's a pretty pleasant way to go, or so I've been told," Midge ponders.

"Let's try it at least. Seems fair."

Emma seemed somewhat taken aback at Bradley threatening to kill Albert if he didn't have his way. "...alright then, if both of you agree on that, then we can lock him in the freezer. I still think it would be best to use the vaccines first though, lest he gets violent when we try to put him there."

Midge and Emma take Albert to the freezer and lock him in. He shows surprisingly little resistance, but they do their best to tune out his bad jokes as they throw him in and lock the door.

They don't do anything with the vaccines yet, and decide to try to search for a child one while they can.

***

"Half an hour left..." Bradley panted. "We need to do...something..."

As if a prayer from God was answered, both Midge and Emma's bracelets beeped. Two boxes dropped from panels in the ceiling by them. They look at each other warily but then open them.

"What the...? An adult vaccine?!" Midge shouted.

"I have one too." Emma rubbed her chin. "I don't understand. Why would we get these out of nowhere?"

"Bradley didn't get one." Midge pointed out. "We must've...done something."

"Wait, we have FOUR vaccines?" Bradley couldn't believe it, and needed the affirmation.

"Yeah, four. We can cure everyone...even Albert." Midge looked towards the hospital room.

"There's no way he's alive at this point." Emma shook her head. "Though we can always check."

Bradley shook his head "No...Albert doesn't get one." he said looking over the vaccines "It takes two to cure a child remember? I need those."

"Even IF we had another vaccine...Miss Null said this was incurable...Albert said Blight-Y was a terrifying thing in his future but Blight-Z is terrible and cures can't be created normally. The cure would probably be better off studied out there rather than in here...I think at least." Bradley added looking at the cures longingly as he succumbed to another coughing fit.

"We could always just check on Albert before talking about this." Emma said. "But again, I doubt we even have a choice at this point." She somberly added. "He wouldn't survive long in there, specially with an illness like Blight."

"Albert will be alive if he's smart, I think. This could be a big deal," Midge says with a smile. For some reason she doesn't really respond to Bradley's objection.

"Emma and Bradley you guys should take the vaccines now, okay? Let's go check on Albert to see if he's still kicking," she says, gripping her knife.

The group went back to the hospital, once again using the laser cutter to unlock the freezer. They warily opened the door, and found Albert inside against some boxes. He was completely frozen, eyes open, and he was smiling. Even in probably the most tortuous conditions, he smiled.

...

...

"One minute!" Bradley shouted, excited. Despite the deaths that had happened, the mood was pretty high. Feeling healthy was something that they all felt they had taken for granted.

Midge slammed the button with her fist. Slowly, the door rose open.

"The number NINE door has been opened. It will remain open for NINE seconds."

"Let's go." Emma nodded.

"Come on, boy!" Bradley shouted at Einstein. The four of them ran through the door. Slowly, it closed behind them.

"We...did it." Emma could hardly believe it.

"But...so many people died." Bradley looked solemnly at the ground.

Midge cackled slightly.

"What is it?"

"Nothing, that was inappropriate." Midge shook her head. "I just realized I won. Anyway, let's get out of here."

Spoiler: Part 0
“Well then…this is actually kinda interesting.” Albert gave a strange chuckle to himself. “Who would have thought this would be coming up again?”

He laughed as he looked at the picture on the magazine that Violet handed him. She had found it one of the desks of the outside-vault area. He was on the cover, ranked one of the top young science minds after he gave his lecture. “I’d love to tell you two about it, but it doesn’t seem relevant.”

"I'm not stupid, you'll be able to explain it to me." Violet huffed.

“Alright, I’ll give you a rundown.”

Albert suddenly straightened up and went into a rather detailed lecture without missing a beat.

“I should, first of all, clarify one crucial point to the rest of you first. I’m a college student studying in the field of neuroscience- the study of the human brain- perhaps the most complex structure of the human body- no, the most complex structure in the universe. It has evolved quite significantly since the age of the Neanderthals. But we humans are different from other organisms, in our desire to learn and adapt. That's not to say other organisms don't have this instinct, or even that all humans do.” He fave a light chuckle, inviting the other two to do so as well.

“Which brings us to the question...can we ever understand the human mind? What even is human consciousness? There are divisions of science and medicine that seem to believe we can, yet we are still a long ways away from making any significant milestones in those studies. Why do humans get depressed and desire suicide when it goes against our base instinct to survive? Do vices like gambling, drug use, and criminal mischief only exist because our society has pushed us away from baser instincts? Or is there something deeper?” He gave the two a rather questioning look, especially Teddy.

“Well, now that’s exactly what I attempted to do. I made a prototype of a device. It was a rather complex device which could be attached to a person with several sections on their head. The device could read brain wave patterns…but that’s not all. It could convert thought processes…to data.”

“Now, first off, I had the subject- who was unharmed, I assure you both- perform a rather simple action- to simply eat their favourite cereals. The device converted that simple action alone into…ten million lines of code. Then I had them read a passage from A Search of Lost Time. It got converted into one hundred million lines of code. Then I pointed a fake gun at the subject- except they didn’t know it wasn’t fake. Ten billion lines of code. This data is unique to every person, and will look immeasurably different for different subjects performing the same action. This is also only the conscious level. I can't even begin to imagine how much more complex the data gets if you analyze the subconscious level.” He shook his head in a rather thoughtful manner.

“But anyway, you might be wondering- “How could this data get used if we can’t possibly ever hope to decipher it?” Well, first off, this data can technically be deciphered…just not in this lifetime. But even then, this data has a lot of theoretical uses. Let me give you an example. Imagine getting a terrible concussion that leaves you with a part of your brain damaged. Alternatively, imagine a patient developing Alzheimer's. If this theoretical patient simply had a copy of their consciousness, memories...their entire mind. All they'd need to do is upload it back in their head. And then they’d be back to normal.”

His eyes lit up, taking great excitement in reliving his particular part. “I’m sure you both can see how powerful this technology can be now. “One particular member in the audience that evening asked me whether the device could be used for learning skills. For example, if you wished to be well versed in karate or some other forms of martial arts, what if you could simply download the memories of a black belt? But, unfortunately, I believe we'd have to understand the data first. We are several generations away from that. I do not know what could happen from downloading the data of another person, but most of my research indicates the results could be...disastrous.”

He paused, taking a deep breath and then snaps his fingers. “And that’s about the entire lecture! Hopefully you managed to actually understand a little bit of that, heh heh.”

The others could see that reciting all this had resulted in a huge change in Albert’s demeanour. His stutter had vanished and he had confidently spoken on the subject with no sign of nervousness. He almost appeared… competent that way.

"Huh..." Teddy remarked at the end of Albert's lecture. It was...unclear whether Teddy found it interesting, or if the entire thing just went over his head.

"Ugh. Bor-ing!" Violet yawned at Albert's lecture. "Did you really need to go on that long?"

***

"T-that's a lot of money", Albert said, somewhat staggered by the vast amount of cash. He suddenly turned towards Teddy. "H-hey...since I opened this, y-you can consider all this repayment for then...right? T-take all you want, it's all yours!"

“Violet’s the one who solved it, dumbass.” Teddy began sifting through the money, while Violet looked in another spot.

Albert walked over to another part, feigning that he was looking for stuff.

“Propane tanks. Awesome.” Violet sighed. Albert could just hear her, but he was mostly focused on the headset in his hand.

I’m so scared. I really need your help right now.

He put it on.

Spoiler: Part 1
[Meta-note: This ‘future’ is after he switched with Sherrington in the vault. Don’t get too caught up wondering if the future should change based on deaths in C1 and yadayadaya. There’ll be more detail later but at the end of the day it’s still time travel wobbly stuff].

Albert Blaketon woke up in a body that wasn’t his...no, that wasn’t right. It was his, but it still almost felt like he was being rejected.

He was tied to a wooden chair, unable to move. He sighed at the usual routine. Sherrington certainly didn’t trust him to move around on his own…

More time passed. Albert started to get nervous.

What the hell did he do? Why hasn’t he switched back yet?

More time passed.

Did he die? Is that even possible?!

Sherrington!” He futilely shouted.

Frustrated, he spat on the ground. Slowly, he used his body’s momentum and threw the chair backwards. It shattered beneath him. He shook the rest of the rope off of him.

Quickly, he got a sense of his surroundings. He was in a...bunker of some sort? It looked more like a food pantry and there seemed to be other rooms, but the exit door was closest to him.

Albert stood up, but fell immediately on his face in pain. He grit his teeth and looked down at his legs. His ankles were in a completely unnatural position...no doubt by Sherrington.

Albert used his arms to pull himself across the room, eventually finding a single crutch. He stood himself up as best as he could and headed to the exit. "H-huh...finally, I might be able to get outta this fuckin' shithole."

He immediately saw stairs climbing upward...great. He moved his way through, unlocking the hatch above him as he reached it.

The air hit Albert like a ton of bricks. He suddenly felt like vomiting, but couldn't. He wanted to let out a cry of horror, but all that came out was a shrieking breathless noise. He heaved in a terrible panic, over and over.

He was standing in the middle of an abandoned city. Dead bodies were littered everywhere, already decayed past the point of recognition. Flies were still hanging around some. There was no sign of destroyed buildings, fires, or anything. Just...death. The city itself felt like a completely empty shell.

He wearily looked up at the sky. He could still see the stars...a great many of them in fact. He tried to use them to discern his location, but quickly realized it was useless without knowing the time of year.

He tried to stay standing, but was unable to. He collapsed to his knees, crutch falling beside him. He trembled, trying to summon the strength to stand. He looked around at the buildings, realizing he recognized them all too well. Monte Carlo…it was so sick. Almost planned.

It was like hell. No...hell was never anything he believed in. This was magnitudes above comprehension.

"N-no...this is...this is fucking impossible..." Albert shook his head. "S-so this...this is what Sherrington l-lived in? I-I... No... Get me out...Sherrington!"

He suddenly looked up at the sky, madness on his face. "Sherrington, can you hear me?! Bring me back! S-switch with me! SWITCH WITH ME, GODDAMMIT!" He shouts upwards with absolute despair, looking like he was about to faint.

All too quickly, he noticed a change in his disposition. It was as if he suddenly caught a case of the flu.

N-No...it's just a pl-placebo...this couldn't be...Blight? Goddamnit...can this get any fucking worse?!

"Hey!" A voice shouted from some distance away. "Is someone out here?!"

“W-what? Who's that?!" Blaketon shouted in the direction of the voice.

Spoiler: Part 2
A large man steps out from the shadows, flashlight in hand. He smiles upon seeing Albert. To Albert it's an all too familiar smile.

What are the fucking odds? Hey, Al. How ya doing?

Teddy Bianchi.

Albert couldn’t believe his eyes. It was The Bear, and he looked exactly the same. Better than ever, in fact. He was all dappered up in an Italian suit.

“Man, look at this. Teddy and Al, the dynamic duo reunited!” He smiled. “I have to tell you, I didn’t think you’d be here of all places. I just had a hunch that you’d crawl up close to home.” Teddy pointed his flashlight at Monte Carlo. “Guess I was right.”

All Albert could do was stare at the sky. He could already feel the tears welling up in his eyes. He had nowhere to run...everybody was dead...he was infected with Blight...and who was here to share his final moments but Teddy fucking Bianchi.

“H-How are you he-here?”

“Huh? Oh I’m not Teddy.” Teddy waved his hand at the idea. “I just have his memories.” He said it nonchalantly, like that was normal.

Albert still didn’t know to react. His heart was beating. He wanted to scream for help. He wanted to beg for mercy. He wanted to…

“Heh…” A strange noise came out of Albert.

“You know, they said only the important memories would survive.” Teddy seemed to be continuing the conversation with or without Albert’s help. “I don’t remember any of my old clients, debtors, hell even some of my crew. I see so many failures and degenerate fucking gamblers that it’s just impossible to keep track of.” Teddy paused before continuing, trying to not laugh while finishing his story. He grabbed Albert’s chin. “But your face. I remember your face. I’ll never forget that fucking face when you lost that last poker game. I still replay it in my head when I need a chuckle. It’s a good one.”

“Hahaha…”

Teddy laughed too. “See? Now you’re getting it.”

Albert wasn’t done though. He kept laughing, louder and louder. He laughed so loud that even Teddy was a bit taken aback. And he kept going, long past the point where he should’ve ran out of breath.

Albert had thought this was the most miserable he could be, but he realized that he’d already bottomed back when Isaac died. There was no way it could get worse, only more ridiculous. And the reality that was confronting him...he didn’t reject it. He embraced it. At a time like this, all he could do was laugh. So that’s what he did.

Spoiler: Part 3
“Alright, Al.” Teddy tried to interrupt. “You can stop.”

Albert had settled down a little, but still found it hard to not let out a chuckle here and there. "We both know why you're here... Just...do it." He raised his hands defeatedly. "I'm already fucked. Just end me now...if you have the balls to do it yourself."

Teddy shook his head, annoyed. “What the fuck’s wrong with you, you weirdo? You’re no use to The Leader if I just kill you.”

“What…? The Leader?” Albert’s eyes scrutinized Teddy. He said he wasn’t Teddy...but he still looked just like him.

“Are you honestly…?” Teddy shook his head in disbelief. “Al, I’m a ghost.”

Teddy said the words like it should all become apparent. But it was more unclear than ever.

“Don’t think too hard about it, okay? I’m just a copy of Teddy’s memories, plus some improvising added in. I guess The Leader liked the real me, so I’m lucky enough to be here.”

Albert laughed again. Now things weren’t just miserable, they were completely batshit.

“If you’re not gonna kill me, what do you need with me?”

“I never said I wasn’t gonna kill you.” Teddy smiled. “Alright boys, get it done.” He pointed to Albert lying on the ground.

“What-” Albert didn’t even get to ask before two more people--they seemed to be random strangers--propped his head up and stuck a piece of metal in it.

“AH! FUCK!” Albert yelled, attempting to thrash.

“Calm down, calm down.” Teddy said. “We’re downloading your data, it’ll just take a minute.”

“My...data…?” Albert spit out the words through gritted teeth.

“Your memories, wonder boy.” Teddy lit a cigar as he said that. “We’ve been waiting for you to crawl out of your hole to retrieve you. Grab those memories out of you.”

“W-Why...the FUCK…?”

“That’s what The Leader wants. What he says, goes.” Teddy shrugged. “Come on, take it as a compliment. Probably thinks you’re a brilliant guy. He needs guys like you, we’re at war after all.”

They ripped the reader out and then nodded at Teddy. He smiled and nodded at them, prompting them to walk off.

“Well, that’s it for us.” Teddy sighed. “I enjoyed this time, however short-lived.” He walked away, leaving Albert behind to die.

“Wait.”

Albert didn’t mind dying. He would just look at the stars, and let this fucked up nightmare of a life end. But there was one thing he had to know.

“Who’s The Leader?”

Spoiler: END
Teddy turned and goofily smiled at Albert as if to say ‘the balls on this kid’. “I wouldn’t tell you even if I did know. And you know what? I don’t know. I never met him.”

“Huh?”

“He uses an alias, even when talking to us.” Teddy shrugged.

“What is it?”

“He wants us to call him Zero. I’ll admit, it’s a little weird.”

“Zero…” Albert breathed, listening to his own heartbeat. “Zero…”

Teddy pulled out a gun. It looked just like a gun Albert was all too familiar with. “Welp. Now I gotta finish the job. Smile, Al.” He pointed the barrel right at Albert’s face.

Albert did. He put on the biggest one he could. The last thing he saw was the flash before him. The light at the end of the tunnel.

ALBERT ~ END

Spoiler: Catch-Up
Everybody has just completed their room phases.

"Ah, it's Helios' team." Ghost ran up to them.

Helios, Adriana, and Emma seemed in good spirits. Midge, Bradley, and Ghost seemed a bit less so, but ok.

"Well, what did everyone find?" Helios asked. "All we got is a secret box and insect."

"We can explain it later." Midge sighed. "Let's find the other team."

They went down the third hallway to Teddy's door. Unfortunately, it was locked.

"Taking a long time in there?" Adriana grinned. "Puzzles are probably a bit too difficult."

"Heh." Helios laughed. "I bet they didn't even have a long anagram."

"What now?" Bradley asked.

"Let's just kill some time?" Emma suggested. "There are a few areas I want to check out."

“S-Somebody help!”

“Huh?” Ghost jumped. “Was that-?”

“Violet!” Helios shouted. “Let’s go!”

They all ran quickly and unorderly down the hall to where Teddy’s team had gone. Violet was at the end of it, holding a gun limply in her hands.

“I-I…”

Rather than wait for an explanation, some heads peeked inside.

Spoiler:
Just inside the vault, Teddy was standing over Albert. It was the most eye-catching thing in the room, despite it being filled with an obscene amount of money. Stacks of cash were all around in small piles.

Albert was in terrible shape. The front of his coat was stained red, and his breaths were heavy and ragged. It seemed like he was trying to speak, but couldn’t say anything. The hole in the back of his shoulder seemed to be the main cause of his predicament.

Teddy looked beaten, and his bloody fists hung limply by his side. “I swear the god, this kid just went fucking crazy.”

"What did that creep do?"

Midge cracks her knuckles, eyeing the two in the room. She goes over to Violet.

"Hey, are you alright? That must've been horrible! Anyway you're safe, seems like you got him good," she says, smiling weakly.

"Wh-What happened here?" Helios asked, holding the back of his head and looking around nervously. "Is everyone alright? Mr. Blaketon in particular seems to have been wounded viciously."

"Y...Yeah. I'm fine". Violet nodded, though her shaking arms and legs said otherwise. "Albert...he was trying to kill Teddy...so I...w-well I think it's kinda obvious what I did!"

"Albert!" Ghost cried, running into the vault and crouching beside the dying man. "Oh, what did you do, we didn't need something like this..." they mumbled, putting pressure on the wound in the vain hope that it would achieve anything.

Emma quickly approached Albert and starts looking at him, trying to gauge the seriousness of his injuries.

"What exactly did he do...?" She asked, momentarily turning to look at Teddy as she did that.

"Alright, well we can take him to the operating room, we should be able to stitch him up," Midge says, walking over to Albert and lifting under him. "Come on Ghost, let's take him over. He's smart, we could use him around."

"Y-yeah, right, whatever he did, we can talk about this properly after we get him to the hospital," Ghost said, looking up at the others. "Um, our room was a hospital by the way, if, if that wasn't already clear. Anyway, we can't just let him die! I'm sure there was good reason to shoot him, but if we have the chance to save him here we should take it, otherwise we'll never be able to go back on what happens at this moment."

As Albert is gingerly lifted up by Ghost and Midge, he wearily sags his head to Teddy. Heavily, he lifts up his hand points it at him.

"M-Mob....bosssss...."

Midge gives Teddy a look, "You two know each other, huh? Seems like there's some history here. If you wanna tell your side of things while you've got the chance and we're helping him, go right ahead."

"I personally don't think there's anything inherently wrong with bossing around a mob, in case you're scared I'm gonna start whining about it."

"Well, perhaps if 'mob bossing' means running a consortium of like-minded pals to play board games then sure, nothing wrong there." Helios said, "But in my experience, that isn't usually how it happens."

"But in any case, I'm sure Mr. Bianchi is a very fine, upstanding man." Helios said, turning to Teddy. "Perhaps he can fill us in?"

"Maybe he can, later," Ghost insisted, lifting Albert with Midge. "Or on the way at least, but please, let's get moving before we waste too much time."

Bradley frowned not quite clear on the full concept of the "mob" but he looked up at Teddy "I hope you are ok Mr Bianchi," he said politely before going to fuss over Violet "Are you ok Violet? That's crazy that you had to shoot him! Where did you even find something like that?" He asked with a mixture of awe and excitement practically hopping on the spot.

Teddy slightly tilted his head to the side in puzzlement, then broke out into a grin. "I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about. Maybe he just snapped, with all the fucking crazy things going on? Or he could read too many tabloids."

His grin dropped, and Teddy looked at Albert with a serious expression. "...Be careful when treating him. I don't know what the hell got into him, but if he goes all freakout again, I dunno how to stop him. If Violet hadn't done what she did, I... I think I would've lost that fight. And you know that's the truth, cuz I'd never admit to losing to his scrawny ass if it wasn't."

Finally, Teddy grinned at Bradley. (You weren't sure about the first one, but this one seems genuine!) "Yeah, no worries. Just a few scratches. Thankfully."

"Okay, I'll be sure to look out in case he tries something," Midge nods to Teddy. "Once he's on the operating table though, he's going to have to behave if he wants to keep his ears."

She blinks.

"That's not a threat it's just a fact. Don't wiggle around during surgery, it can get really messy."

The gathering quickly goes to the hospital room. Albert is was sprawled out on his stomach on the operating table, the back of his shirt having a clean hole cut for surgery.

"G-Gah!" Albert shouted. He had pressed the button on his headset recently, and it now seemed he ripped it out with his good arm and threw it against the wall.

"Don't move, kid!" Midge shouted.

"Oh dear." Ghost said, running the metal detector over him. "The bullet's still inside of him."

"Can you remove it?" Midge asked.

"...I don't think so. But I'll try my best to see if the table can."

"Alright."

Ghost swiped his fingers over some of the buttons. It seemed to be going relatively easy, but the machinery above the table didn't move yet.

"The bullet can only be removed after careful surgery and anesthesia...it'll take about 14 hours."

"We don't have that kind of time." Bradley stamped his foot.

"We could...leave the bullet inside of him for now." Midge thought. "How about that Ghost?"

"...I can stitch his wound and stop the bleeding. But I doubt he'll be able to use his right arm again, and there's no telling how much harm the bullet can do still inside him."

"We have some anesthetics." Adriana said, already having pilfered through the medicine cabinets.

"We can't put him under." Midge shook her head.

"We have to." Ghost insisted. "This'll be extremely painful, and he's in no condition to move around."

"Listen, Ghost." Teddy tried to keep his voice steady. "This kid is deadweight if he's unconscious. I don't know how many vaccines we're dealing with here, but I do know we've found none so far. And we got under four hours left." Teddy looked at the other teams. "Or did I get that wrong?"

"No vaccines." Helios mumbled.

"...we found some fever medicine?" Ghost pulled some of the bottles out to show Teddy.

"Thing is, nobody's going to give a vaccine to this kid." Midge shrugged. "If we found four, five. Maybe. But what do you guys really think we're gonna get? I'm thinking two or three. Hell, I wouldn't put it past this crazy bitch to give us zero."

"...that's not true." Violet clenched her fists. "There have to be vaccines. We can't go through all this for nothing."

"Fact of the matter is, if you really wanna give Albert a chance here to live, he's gonna have to suck through the pain. Fight for his own vaccine."

"He won't make it." Emma's eyes widened at Midge's statement. "Blight-Z kills in 9 hours without the presence of outside factors. There is a bullet in his body. His entire immune system is going to be responding to that."

"Alright then." Midge shook her head. "He's got a shorter time limit too. Sounds to me like he doesn't have a choice if he wants a vaccine, that's the hand he's dealt."

"This is insane." Helios stared in disbelief. "You're going to kill the young man. His best chance of living is if we bring a vaccine back to him."

"And do what until then? Stay by his bedside? We need vaccines."

Ghost visibly shivered despite the suit. "I'll stitch him up. Regardless of what we decide...stopping the bleeding can only help."

Ghost grabbed the necessary thread and needle from the counter and went to work on Albert. Ghost moved surprisingly nimbly and with great dexterity despite the gloves.

"Nice working there, Ghost. It's cool having you around here," Midge says, watching the surgery carefully, interposing herself between the stitches and the children.

"Anyway, does anybody have anything important from their rooms? All we found was that x-ray over there with cancer on it, and I don't see much of a use for it. The medicine Ghost has is good though."

"Well, uhh...we found this box," Helios explained, "Says not to open and to return it to Tyrell Hodges. He's an executive to SkyTech, a pretty huge tech conglomerate... Not sure what he's doing here though."

Helios placed the box on a nearby table. "Anyway, I'll just leave it here. You guys can decide if we open it."

"There was also that keyhole we never got to to unlock, and that butterfly we found in a jar, which is probably meant to hint at something to do with the butterfly effect." Emma added.

"Speaking of Tyrell Hodges, I didn't get a chance to say it while we were in the room but I actually have met him before." She admitted. "We deal a lot with SkyTech products at my job. I don't know much about him beyond our business dealings, though, so I'm not sure how he could be related to this game or what the contents of that box could be. "

"Wow, imagine how much trouble we would be in if that box was where all the vaccines are. We would just have to wait for ourselves to die since it would be so rude to open it," Midge points out.

"Anyway, SkyTech is a big industry. This might be market research for some murder game product they wanna get out next quarter. Plus if he's been in meetings with you..."

She stops short.

"I mean, that could mean be how he kidnaps people, who knows."

"A keyhole?" Teddy asked. "We found a key and a keyhole! They didn't match, though. So maybe our key goes in that hole?"

Teddy went over to the table and eyed the box warily. "W... What the fuck... Does Null really expect us to not open it? Unless... it's a trap. But maybe she'd think we'd... Argh, fuck! Did anybody jiggle it around to try to hear what was inside or anything?"
