"Hey! Hey, Nina! Hey!" Eve called over to the girl annoyingly, running up to her.

"What?" Nina responded. "Can't you see I'm busy being bored here?"

"Yeah, why is that anyway? I figured you'd be jumping at a chance to kill someone!"

"Your motive sucks," Nina replied scornfully. "My whole family died in a car explosion, and I don't care about having the insurance myself. I'd rather die doing something interesting than keep on living in this stupid world."

"Oh, really? Weeeeell, have I got news for you, sunshine!" Eve said chipperly, drawing closer with a printed document in her hand. "You think your whole family's dead? What if I were to tell you... that your brother's still alive?"

"What?" Nina exclaimed, an unfamiliar spark lit in her eyes. "Really?"

"Yup! I don't know how he did it, but he survived that explosion. He's out there, somewhere. Doing pretty well for himself too, given the circumstances. But you know, life's pretty tough for an orphan..."

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," Nina said, tugging the paper from Eve's hands and abruptly turning away. "So you're still alive, huh, Gabriel..."

She ran through a doorway that had just opened up, bright displays cheerfully indicating “execution this way” around it. After going through the corridor beyond for a bit, walls shot up either side of her and pinned her in a strange machine, like something you might find in an arcade. There was a large monitor in front of her, as well as a set of controls.

“See, I figured it would be a bit lame if Nina got nothing out of this,” Eve said from behind her podium, as the students watched the various displays which had different shots of the action. “The motive never did it for her. Her true motive was meeting her brother just once more, right? Well, guess who we have here tonight!”

The displays on some of the monitors suddenly switched over, and the students all saw a boy inside a similar machine to Nina’s. By his features he was unmistakably Gabriel, and must have been only a year or two younger than her.

“Gabriel!” Nina exclaimed, staring at her own monitor. “Wow, and here I thought I’d die without ever seeing you again.”

“Nina? Is that really you?” the boy replied, staring unbelievably into his own monitor. “When they said I’d get to see you again if I went inside this thing, I didn’t believe it was really true…”

Eve quickly cut in, "Yeah, well, anyway, time for the rules of the game! It’s simple enough, really. A little versus mode. Winner lives, loser dies! And only one of you gets to make it out of there.”

”Wh-what? What do you mean?” Gabriel exclaimed, looking panicked now. “You can’t be serious?”

He got his response quickly: an arc of electricity shot across his chamber, narrowly catching his elbow painfully. He looked at his monitor in disbelief, and saw Nina already operating her controls, figuring out the weird minigame that resulted in damage being dealt to the other side.

“Do we… really have to do this, sis?” he asked desperately, jumping as a second arc only just missed him. “I don’t want to hurt you…”

“It’s you or her, kid! It’s a battle to the death!” Eve called out, her voice apparently playing from speakers in his chamber. “Kill, or be killed.”

“”Th-then… I choose death. I’m not letting Nina die, not after I only just found her again…”

“Good. Then you can just die. You should have died in that explosion anyway,” Nina said, sending another bolt across. Her words surprised Gabriel enough that he tried to avoid it again instead of just taking it.

“N-Nina? What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I’m here to finish the job. The C4 got our parents but somehow you lived. Now I’ve been given a second chance!”

“So it’s true, then,” Gabriel said sadly, expression hardening. “I thought it might have been you who killed our… my parents. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but I’ve had a long time to come to accept it.” He winced as another arc of electricity caught him, but with cold, calm determination he remained standing, glaring at his sister. “Fine, then. This is for mum and dad.”

Suddenly taking action, the boy fiddled with the controls and quickly sent his own attack over to Nina’s side, who was surprised enough that it managed to hit her directly. Not letting up, he tried to take advantage of the opening, but Nina began to fight back herself. Things grew fierce and electricity crackled across the monitors as the students watched on.

However, even despite her early lead, Nina was clearly losing. Whether it was skill or just plain luck, Gabriel seemed to have a much better grasp of the minigame. The conclusion was apparent well before he dealt the last blow, and with one final shriek as electricity struck her, Nina’s heart gave out and she collapsed.

Gabriel stared blankly at his monitor for a few moments, expression almost unreadable. He seemed sad, angry and empty all at once. Before anyone could say anything, however, he reached forwards and hit a different button. The feed immediately cut, and the students in the Alabaster Facility were left with nothing but various camera feeds of Nina’s limp, lifeless body.
