"No funny business, indeed," Nail assures Benjamin, before giving the amulet a glare like it personally insulted him. "Now, let's see... yes, that means... and that could be... yes... interesting. Very interesting."

He lowered the amulet, and tossed it to Ivan. "Sir Ivan. I request you wear this amulet. I am still uncertain as to its effects, but it is one that reacts to being cast upon. It is your choice whether to trust me on this or not."

Ivan caught the amulet, looking quite perplexed.

"..."

Taking a sigh, he put the amulet on.

"I'll have you know that I don't trust you now. Not one bit. The air of mystery around you is nauseating. But I will subscribe...as we have no choice, do we?"

Ivan braced himself as he prepared for a spell.

"H-h-kh-h… very well, then. I suppose you may test it here." Belphegor hands over the tome to Ivan, who glances over it carefully. The shrinking spell apoears to be one that needs a keyword for the incantation to work, which is specified in the book. It appears one can also specify the rough height of the person when they utter the words to the spell. A detailed looking magic circle is given below. It appears that there's also a spell which can be used to undo the spell at any time, which will bring whatever it is used on back to normal size.

Belphegor also brings a bucket of red paint and sets it on the floor ominously. Benjamin takes it and goes to a corner. With Ivan's help, they set up a detailed magic circle just like the one given in the tome. It appears nearly identical.

"Very well… I suppose we should do this now." Ivan grimaces, standing on the circle with the amulet around his neck and the baton in his hand.

"Alright then. Let's try it out", Benjamin says simply. The others crowd around the two, intrigued. Some are unsure if this will work, others feel something is wrong here.

Benjamin starts chanting the words required as Ivan closes his eyes in anticipation. "Reduce form to one-thirtieth…"

At that very moment, Ivan suddenly stands still, a strange look in his eyes. He feels his bones pop and groan and lets out a cry of shock. The others watch in amazement as Ivan's body form reduces, growing shorter by the second till they can barely even see him. His cry of shock grows more and more high pitched as he grows shorter, sounding quite strange coming from him. Several gasps of awe and bewilderment are heard in response to this sorcery.

Finally, Ivan stops shrinking. He stands still, looking around at his surroundings with a look of horror. It appears the spell has worked. His clothes as well as his baton have also shrunk with him, curiously. He starts jumping up and down and shouting at the others, but to them it feels more like the squeaking of a tiny mouse.

As everyone seems transfixed on this spell, Nail suddenly speaks up. "Hold on for a second... What is that beside Ivan?"

Everyone looks near where the tiny man is, and see something quite surprising. It's the amulet that Ivan was wearing just now. Except… it isn't on him anymore. And…

"Hey, it's the same size still!" Matt shouts. "What the hell?! It didn't even shrink with him!"

Everyone seems quite astonished at this. Benjamin quickly reads the spell to transform Ivan back to normal size. He quickly grows back, his voice regaining its usual pitch as he does. He falls back from the red circle, quite shaken up by what he's just undergone. And yet the amulet, still sitting on the circle, appears to be the same as it was.

It doesn't appear it was affected by the spell.

Ivan sat out of breath on the floor, attempting to recover from being shrunk.

"T-That was...v-very unpleasant..." he groaned.

Nail tapped his fingers together. "I see. I believe the amulet may have originally been enchanted to 'resist magical effects', but without the sigils, it's not quite as powerful, only being able to stop itself from being affected. But still... how DOES this play into the killing...? Hm..."

"Because it's not me, the one responsible for all this must be one of the others in the lower cavern," Seb doggedly deduced. "So then, we can solve this by looking at each of them in turn.

"Maybe it was Ivan? He was by himself out in the cavern. If he drew a circle the snow and lured Charlie into it, he could shrink her. Then, like Shizune said, he could simply erase the circle by moving the snow around. He took the camera while Oliver was busy in the secret room, and then took the jewellery box from the meeting room while I was busy checking in with Oliver upstairs. Then he brought Charlie out to the ice wall, away from the rest of us, and stabbed her twice with the spear he'd been using. That would explain the flecks of blood found there."

“Ciro, you said you found the gloves on the cave floor right?” Benjamin asked him as if he hadn’t just attacked him an hour ago. “When was this? Was it the day of the murder?”

[The papers did not seem to belong to a photo at all. As an additional detail, the group who investigated the fireplace smelled some ink coming from there either.]

Shizune somehow realized the paper wasn't a photo.

"To be honest, I am not sure about Sebastian anymore myself," Ivan sighed. "The magic circle in snow theory may hold some water, though...but when would it have been used?"

"...I would say that maybe it was after I received the photo, as it was designed to get everyone inside. Additionally, the photo seemed to float over to me, so maybe the flight spell was used on the picture. But I'm not so sure if the timeline matches up."

Bruce appears to be quite nervous about the business involving the photo. It appears to be ready to say something but then gets interrupted by Belphegor. "If you all claim that Charlotte was already shrunk when the photo was taken, then what would making a magic circle after Ivan left to investigate accomplish? Let me clarify one thing to you as well."

"THE SPELL FOR REVERSING THE SHRINKING SPELL DOES NOT REQUIRE THE MAGIC CIRCLE TO BE CAST, AS LONG AS THE PERSON IT WAS USED ON WAS ALREADY SHRUNK."

"You all are closer than you think. Simply consider what the photo was used for and what happened after Ivan left. If you have further trouble with things, I recommend you try eliminating the suspects on the lower side and try imagining how they could have trapped Charlotte and brought her to the river."

"I still believe Sebastian is our high-priority suspect. But we're still quite a ways from an answer."

Benjamin took a deep breath and began speaking. "Charlie didn't have bruises in the photo, so she could not have been knocked unconscious before shrinking down. But she must've been lured in the circle somehow--I believe it's possible that the circle was simply drawn in the red room, where it would be camouflaged so to speak. This would make Nail the most likely suspect, of course. Additionally there was no sighting of Charlie actually leaving the red room, so things only make more sense if she were shrunken there."

He then looked at Seb again. "However, the fact that the amulet didn't shrink with Ivan strikes me as strange. But it's possible that once she had shrunk and was killed, the killer just draped the amulet around her neck not knowing that she actually wore it on her arm. This suggests that the killer is anyone but Nail..."

"IF SOMEONE HAD USED THE PAINT TO MAKE A MAGIC CIRCLE IN THE RED ROOM, NAIL WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE AND UNDOUBTEDLY FELT THEIR PRESENCE."

"This magic circle business is quite intriguing as well… I believe discussing where it was used and how you didn't manage to uncover it during your investigations shall prove to be useful here", Belphegor suggests ominously.

"We already talked about all that!" Benjamin shouted uncharacteristically irritated. "It was Seb, and he cleaned it. The only other options are that it was Nail in the red room or that Oliver just reused the circle he already drew."

"Sebastian would have been able to clean the circle effectively, yes. But how did he avoid Charlotte noticing it? Surely she mustn't have missed something as obvious like that. Then she wouldn't have been in the proper area for the spell to take effect."

"I apologize..." Ivan frowned, lowering his head. "This expedition is opening my eyes over many things regarding myself. I will do my best so this does not happen again..."

After a few moments of silence, he continued. "R-Regardless...I believe Sebastian is the one with the best opportunity to do this. In case Matt had not mentioned these, there was also a single shard of glass sharp enough to cut near the mat, as well as a crowbar near the snowbank."

"Well... You still don't have any conclusive evidence," Seb insisted stubbornly. He didn't seem to have any way to counter the claims, though. "Without that... Without that, there's nothing you can do, right?"

"If the glass was not on top of the mat but next to it, then that implies it was missing when the window was broken and was placed there after. Really, it seems like we're only narrowing on one truth."

Benjamin then listened to Seb, "There are things we can do, Seb. You're the last person here I'd want to hurt, but I don't think I need to convince you that I'd go that far if need be." There was an unusual inflection in his voice as he spoke. It wasn't quite sadness, but it was clear he was feeling quite conflicted.

He shook his head. "I'm convinced enough. You guys can feel free to sort out the other details but... it's over."

Benjamin shook his head. "Furthermore, we are not obligated by a burden of proof. In fact, the Crown Court often isn't either." He smirked at that. "We just have to make a reasonable decision."

"W-wait! No, that's... But..." All of a sudden, Seb looked afraid, more than he had up until now in the expedition. "It's not... We can't just let it end like that. Belphegor will kill people close to us if we get this wrong. I thought that maybe I'd be lucky, that I no longer cared enough about anyone to be affected, but... I'm just lying to myself. I doubt Belphegor cares about technicalities, he'll find someone to kill regardless, and I... don't want that."

He gripped his podium with shaky hands. Surprisingly he seemed to be crying, which might have been the first real emotion the others had seen on him. "Okay, look. I... admit it. I did most of what you're all accusing me of. This isn't the first time I've helped out at a crime scene before, though usually I only handle what comes... after. But you have to believe me, I did not kill her! I couldn't do that... There's no way I could kill someone. I don't like it when people die.

"S-someone else here is pulling the strings..." Saying this, he looked down at his hands, too scared to look anyone else in the eye. "I was just following orders. I've always only ever been following their orders. I set things up so that they could kill Charlie."

"...I see."

Raising his baton, he slammed it down like a gavel.

"Your testimony is noted and appreciated. I do think you are still most likely to be the killer. But I will not be satisfied until we shoot this testimony down. The rest of you may disagree if you wish...but I swear on my name as the Chief of Police, that I will uphold my responsibility to the best of my ability."

His eyes seemed to plead a bit as he faced the rest of the group.

"Please testify further. What did you set-up? Whose orders are you following? We need to know all the details if you truly want to be seen as innocent."

"W-well, for starters, she had two wounds, right? The second was done by me, with the spear, after she was already dead," Seb said, still looking down. "I hoped it might cover up the true cause of death, make it look like someone just stabber her twice with the spear.

"And then there's that... I knocked her out. While she was shrunk, she was easy to... to strangle." Even with his head down people could see a disgusted expression pass over his face as he said that, and his hands shook more violently for a moment at the memory. "I didn't like doing that, but I didn't see what else I could do. She needed to be immobile and quiet for the killer to stab her.

"Lastly, there's the note in the fireplace. It was a message from the killer I'd burned. We'd been using Bruce to exchange messages and sort out our plans. After I was done reading them I'd burn them."

“He wanted you to send her at ‘5:00’ right? The time that I stopped watching Ciro.” Benjamin theorized. “There’s nothing we can say right now to implicate Ciro completely... but it stands to reason that Shizune falling in the lake was not a coincidence. It was timed perfectly with 5:00 and when I stopped watching. Perhaps we should focus on that.”

"If you are truly believing in the boy's words, you should perhaps take a look at the timeline of how things went before jumping to conclusions", Belphegor utters. "Furthermore, if you claim that the culprit was actually in the upper ice caverns, then a suitable method of murder must be provided. How could someone on the other side have stabbed Charlotte?"

"Actually the whining noise was heard at 5:50, so Charlie had to be alive by then. If Ciro did something in those 4 minutes I wasn't watching him, it wasn't killing Charlie." Benjamin rubbed his fingers on his head. "If the note said '7:00' then Ciro could be the killer... but I don't believe Seb would've been able to send it discreetly. Meaning it said '6:00', and the killer could only be Bennett or Daniel. Or it said '5:00', but Ciro did something else at that time that wasn't directly killing Charlie... curious indeed."
