Luka said nothing for a while, just standing and listening as Hazel told her story and people talked around him.

"You know, what happened to your boy was a tragedy." He suddenly spoke up, not caring to see if anybody was listening. "But at the end of the day, it was an accident. And Jason, you never saw him. He was tortured by what happened. Constantly. Even on days where he was smiling like nothing was wrong, he would have so much pain in his eyes."

He clenched his fist, looking like he as about to cry. "Your boy died? Who hasn't had something horrible happen to them? But to 'curse' him, to do nothing but spread a toxic cloud around you--you're just an evil old bat! Giving him what he 'deserved'? If you really think that, then what you deserve is to die miserable and alone."

Going over to the combine, Stella sees that it must have been there for over thirty years. The paint is chipping off and it has the feeling of a dilapidated amusement park ride, long abandoned.

The front of the combine has large metal spikes attacked to an axel. The jagged, rusted edges easily give off an uneasy feeling. In front of the blades is a bundle of wilted flowers, as if placed at a grave site. Behind the blades is a cabin from which the combine can be operated. A thin rope is tied inside then cabin and then trails out the front window and hangs over the blades, exactly if someone had climbed out over them.

Inside the cabin there's a cabinet which could fit a small child inside, but all that is inside is a pink-colored key. The key to the combine is in the ignition, but it is rusted in place. Turning it does not produce any action from the combine.

Two newspaper articles sit on the console of the machine, clearly placed there for the sake of this game.

"Fake Birds Found Among Dying Species:

Emerald Technology Solutions, the company responsible for the wind turbines which have been responsible for the deaths of an estimated 200 Symphonic Warblers, a remarkably beautiful endangered species, has reported that many of the birds flying into the turbines have been stuffed. They report that the they've found some birds lying at the foot of the turbine which have been cut open and stuffed. The project has been considered a failure by many activists here in Fox Harbor due to these events, but is it possible there has been some strange sabotage happening?"

The second one is folded neatly next to the first.

Stella silently read over the newspaper article again, her eyes widening as she did. She shook her head and then checked the folded paper.

Cousteau fluttered from her shoulder and perched on one of the levers in the cabin.

"Died... so that's what it would seem to be? I don't even remember if my boy is alive now." Hazel shook her head. "All my memories are muddled, but all I am sure of is that something bad happened to him... and I haven't seen him in a long time. It isn't as if you would ever understand, though." She hardly seemed angered by Luka's brash statement towards her. "To have lived this long, I think... is somewhat ironic. Perhaps you may be right, young man. Perhaps I should have died decades back, all alone... But my family is a different matter. Do not think you can casually dismiss the incident as an 'accident'... My life has been surrounded by nothing but cold, cruel death. I have been fated to see the generations before me fall, one by one. My boy... he was so young, so sweet." She trembled slightly, her cane wavering. "He was like an angel to me... I had hoped that with him, things would be different. All I wished for was someone to be by my side. But even that was all taken away from me... After all this, is it truly so monstrous of me to do what I did?" She asked. "I have been haunted by regrets my whole life, by the ghosts of my dear family."

"All I did to Jason Church was give him a taste of the pain I have suffered. It does not appear he had the capacity to withstand it like I have." She finished quietly and looked away. It did not look like she was having a particularly fun time recalling all this.

Sensing the tension between Luka and Hazel, Maximillion pulled on his collar awkwardly before sidestepping his way over to the combine to read the articles. It was probably better to leave them to sort things out.

“Hmm how interesting. Isn’t it Cousteau my friend? It seems this company may not have been as destructive as it first seemed to your kind.” He placed the newspaper article back where it was. “Assuming it’s telling the truth and isn’t merely some well-paid editors cover-up story.” He said dismissively. “But why would someone go to such lengths? And if true what happened with the real birds?”

Wesley shook his head wearily at Hazel's speech. "Perhaps Jason Church deserved it, yes. But none of the people around him who suffered in his place did. When you wish pain upon others you need to be careful not to let it spread... I myself live a life of seclusion now. At least this way I can't bring harm to anyone else. But you, you chose to lash out, and got others caught in the crossfire. I suppose the strength of that curse just goes to show how much you felt about Jason Church, though... I can't say I blame you."

Stella pops open the second news story:

"Recent Fox Harbor High School Graduate Found Hanged in Room:

Lukas Kovacic, 18, who graduated from Fox Harbor High School last spring, was found dead in his room last weekend by his father, Gregor Kovacic.

Lukas was valedictorian of his graduating class and was set to go to a prestigious university."

Maximillion shuffled uncomfortably, moving away from the combine after reading the story. “Stories about suicide are in poor taste for this game.” He shivered visibly and looked over at Luka. “Still...more of an indication that Luka here is a drone of some form...being controlled by someone who knew him would be my bet.”

Anna is trying her best to keep some distance away from the current drama, apparently not enjoying it. "I don't like how this is making us fight like this... isn't this meant to be 'therapy' anyways? I'm thinking that's just a big old lie like everything else."

She turns to Luka. "Maybe you should explain this first, though."

"Well, we can't discount the possibility these articles are fake, right...?" Ember proposed, shooting Luka a few uneasy glances. "I mean, the fake bird scheme seems like it'd be figured out immediately. And Luka..."

Vivienne seemed to be keeping her distance from the combine, looking back toward the house even while responding.

“I suppose Zero thinks that we have to put all these issues out in the open before they can be resolved...even if it won’t be easy,” she said, “I think we’ve gone past the point where any semblance of good humor will be found in this game. Though frankly, I’m not sure who Zero is to think it’s their job to fix our lives.”

She fell silent for a moment before adding, “Perhaps the Luka we know is actually his father...”

"I don't think the Luka article is fake, but I also don't think Luka would kill himself. He does not strike me as that sort of person," Wesley opined. "I also don't believe the Luka we see now is someone else simply acting like him: he's far too genuine in my eyes."

Maximillion shook his head “Despite your faith I still have doubts. Wouldn’t such a report produce a body that could be verified? If this story is true then someone still died then.” He shrugged “Unless as Ember suggested these articles are faked which would be quite a relief at this point.” He chuckled but it faded away.

“Maybe we should return to the house...this environment has grown cold to me.”

"We knew he had been declared missing, after leaving with Jason Church, and we knew his age didn't match up. We did not know he was later found back at his home, dead," Wesley said simply. "There might be more to these articles than meets the eye."

"You could also turn it around. Maybe the articles are genuine, but Luka is the fake." Ember said. "We already know there's at least one other actor with us, don't we? And we have to remember we found a message allegedly from Iris DuGrande, another dead person. This could be all part of the game."

Hazel stood solemnly by the side as people argued over the articles. Her attention was elsewhere, though. She was staring at the farm equipment as if trying to recollect something else once more.

"This... this is also familiar. This equipment is..." She went closer to it. "I... I remember being here before", she suddenly said. "I remember coming here and laying flowers here... There was an incident here, was there not...? 30 years ago to boot... this cannot be a coincidence..."

Hazel's words to Luka did seem to illicit some sort of reaction, but not a verbal response. He became visibly less angry, and his shoulders slumped in resignation. He didn't appear to be willing to offer any consolation however.

"There's nothing I can explain." Luka stated simply regarding the others' questions. He didn't appear to have a strong reaction to the article given what he already learned. "I didn't kill myself, and never thought about doing that. The last thing I remember is being in the car when I was 'missing'." He shuffled uncomfortably. "And I guess I was in jail for some time too."

He then turned towards everyone. "I would think more about yourselves, and whether you're all dead too. We already saw Iris in some way after all. At this point, Hell is one of the more plausible explanations." He smirked slightly, as if he was thankful of the possibility that his torment wasn't burdened on his shoulders. "Though there appears to be a contradiction between the two articles too. I was never 'found' after being missing, and yet I turned up. There's some fuckery about."

“...All right. I think we can all agree that there is something much bigger going on here than a game to win some money,” Astrid suddenly began. “In fact, the money might be the least important part of this game. So I’m proposing again that we all work together to get as many people as possible to $1,000,000 at the same time. This way we’ll get the most out of this game, and it will probably cause the game to go on longer than it’d otherwise would, so we’ll have more chances to learn about things from Zero.

“Of course, this would require everyone’s cooperation,” she added, eyeing Max.

"Luka brings up a good point," Stella agreed. "About the article, at least. I'm not quite willing to assume we're all dead just yet, " she added with a little smirk of her own. "As for the other story, who would try to fake mass Warbler deaths by putting a bunch of stuffed birds under the windmills? Nobody would fall for such a stupid stunt."

She nodded to Cousteau, who hopped out of the cabin to rejoin her. "Zero did say they would try to prevent us from winning the game, right? Who's to say they aren't just trying to unnerve us by planting a bunch of fake information around?"

"I can confirm quite a few of the articles have been real, so it's not much of a stretch that the rest are too," Wesley said. "Besides, while it may fit Zero's claimed MO, faking the articles wouldn't make much sense in the larger context of the game. You can't tell me, after all this, that this game really is just about competing to win $1,000,000. The articles are here for more than just the baseline game. Zero's trying to tell us something. Or, well, quite a lot of somethings, by the looks of things."

Maximillion smirked "Why this can't be hell my dear boy Luka. It's too much fun. Rest assured we are most certainly on good old terra firma." he said patting the lad gently on the back as if he might explode on contact.

"Still, did Zero say they would be out to frustrate our efforts? I must have missed such a part. Still I too am eager to see this game through to it's conclusion, rest assured Astrid." he shrugged "The competition is off, it is clearly causing too much distress to the participants which alas is a shame but it would not be sporting to unleash my full professional gamer power upon the other players while some of them are suffering so." he concluded with a lot of vigorous head nods.

The group begins walking back through the woods towards the house. Before they leave, they are sure to pick up the Pink Key, which was left at the combine.

The atmosphere on the walk is heavy.

When they make it back to the house, they are greeted with a message:

Even if you were to believe the Luka standing right here is a robot or whatever the rest of you have concluded about him, at no time did I ever hear about his body being found. He was one of my best friends. Do you really think I wouldn't have followed the news closely for any information that might have come up about him after he disappeared?

Maximillion snickered "Clearly, his grasp of reality has become too real and he needs to report for recalibrations." He said before bursting into chortles. "Oh don't worry yourself too much Luka. Anna was locked away for ages and she came out fine!" he said lightly waving his hands dismissively.

About twenty minutes later, Luka steps out. His hand is covered in cuts and blood, both dry and new. His face is blanched, but he doesn’t step out of the room as if anything is different. Instead he walks over to his jacket on the floor and puts it back on.

“For those curious,” He began without turning around, “all we did was play a game.”

Maximillion gasped, making a mental note never to upset Luka too much in a game in future “Oh now I wish I could have played more of a game. Still I do wonder what secrets and truths you were taught from this experience.” His gaze drifted to the discarded piece of glass “We should probably take care not too destroy too much property though, I can’t imagine what liability clauses we signed in all the paperwork for this game.”
