"You should watch out," Ramon said to Max gravely, a dark look on his face. "You rolled the three sixes! A curse is coming your way, and there won't be any escape once it strikes! Myrion and I already know this all too well, and soon you will be the third..."

"Well, I can offer you a fair bit of that if you want it, my good woman", Max quipped back to Devin. "I'm sure I've got some manure in one of my bags! Useful as a fertiliser, like that Woody fella would say." He then turned to Ramon. "A curse, eh? Well, I'd say a fish talkin' down to me is already pretty cursed, y'know? But I'll be fine, probably. I know ol' Lucifer's probably in need of something or the other, and I'm sure I can make a straight bargain when I need it!"

Spoiler: Tuesday
Sam is seated alone in the Staff Room, munching on some snacks with a bunch of papers sprawled out on the table in front of him.

Deirdre is in the corner of the room smoking, staying out of Sam’s way. The room is silent.

...Until the door suddenly bursts open. Ruby, Ramon, Roxie, and Luke burst in, all loud and chatting with each other. They all take seats around Sam, who quietly seethes.

“..And that’s when I kicked his ass! Haha!” Roxie slaps her knee and laughs. Luke and Ramon are listening to her story while Ruby is cooking a little something for the group.

Deirdre stares out the window at the endless twilight, while Sam suddenly speaks up.

“Would all of you please shut up? I’m trying to focus here. I need to sort all these things out, and you’re all just going crazy talking so loudly!”

Luke mutters something along the lines of an apology but it’s quickly drowned out by Roxie shouting back.

“Please! You really expect us to be quiet in a public place like this? Why don’t you take your lame ass papers somewhere else!?”

“Hey, they’re not lame!” Ramon pipes in. “He’s doing some of that cool dungeons and dragons stuff, right?”

Sam sits down. “Right. Exactly. Someone is blasting some stupidly loud music on the 7th floor. I came here because it was quiet and empty.”

Deirdre raises an eyebrow. “Mostly empty.” Sam adds.

“Riiiight, well I can’t say that I fuckin’ care about your stupid nerd shit.” Roxie crosses her arms. She seemed to be the only one of that opinion though, because the other three are huddled around Sam, more interested in the cool pictures of monsters he has on the table.

“Wasn’t there supposed to be a game that happens at some point?” Deirdre walks over, cigarette in hand, and asks.

“Mhm.” Sam nods. “I was thinking of setting that up, but I’d need a little more time…”

“Oooh. You’re seriously gonna do that?” Luke smiles. “I think I’d be down to check it out when it happens.”

“Me too!” Ramon eagerly agrees. “As a chosen hero of destiny, it, of course, IS good to get some type of hands on training… Killing dragons and other villains heroically is natural for me!”

Ruby seems to zone out a bit and skips back to the stovetop, leaving the others.

“Did you say killing shit?” Roxie pipes in.

“Of course you ‘kill shit.’” Sam frowns. “Do you even know anything about the game?”

“Well…”

The five sit around and discuss dungeons and dragons, though Deirdre remains standing and smoking. It seems that most of them are interested in playing a game with Sam sometime.

“Four it is then!” Ramon cheerfully smiles. “I’ll be sure to be there!”

“Heh. Alright. I should have enough time to set something up by then.”

“Alright!” Luke pumps his fist. “Bingo room, right? Should be big enough and out of the way.”

“Maybe I can use that projector in there, somehow..” Sam nods to himself.

“Fuck yeah!” Roxie seems excited to kill things.

Deirdre gives a slight smile and takes a puff. “Hmm. I don’t think I’m interested, but I’m sure you’d all have fun.”

“Oh! Coming through! Hot hot hot!” Ruby interrupts the group carrying a hot plate. It seems she went overboard cooking…

Ruby walks behind Deirdre just as she takes a step back, and the two bump into each other, causing Ruby to drop the plate she was holding and Deirdre to fall forward onto the table, dropping her lit cigarette…

“Hey, are you okay?” Luke jumps up from his seat and runs to Ruby, who nods and says she’s fine.

“Uhh.. You guys…” Ramon nervously adds as smoke suddenly fills the room. Sam’s papers are on fire!

“Dammit!” Sam slams his fist on the table. Roxie has already ran outside of the room, and bumps into Dale.

“What’s going on?” He sternly asks, but he doesn’t need to hear a response, he can already smell the smoke.

Dale runs into the staff room, pushing Roxie out of his way, and quickly puts the fire out..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“...Thank goodness I made it in time.” Dale scolds Sam and Deirdre. Who are both seated on one of the benches outside the staff room. “Do you know how unsafe you were being!? Smoking, indoors no less, without a window open!” He points at Deirdre, almost spitting on her with how aggressively he’s speaking.
She rolls her eyes. “You’re not my mother…” She mutters.
“And you!” Dale shouts. “All those papers, spread out like that, in the kitchen!? Don’t you know those stoves are gas powered! That wasn’t safe! That wasn’t safe at all!” Dale’s eyes almost pop out of his skull. Sam just groans.
Dale takes a deep breath. “I don’t want to see this from either of you ever again.”
He leaves without even waiting for a response.
“...I’m sorry, Deirdre, I didn’t mean to bump into you-” Ruby walks over and apologizes.
“It’s okay. Stuff like this just happens.”
Sam grits his teeth. “Thankfully, I keep spares, of course… But those copies were all tedious to make. However, I won’t let this delay our game tomorrow…”
The group splits off, Sam going upstairs to his room, and the others heading down to the lobby to do one thing or another. Most of them would be eagerly waiting for Sam’s DnD game at 4pm the next day, right in the Bingo Room.
Spoiler: Wednesday, 4:15pm
...Ding!
The elevator doors opened up for Roxie, Luke, Myrion and Great Dragon.
Inside, slumped against the back of the wall, is Samuel Lockmeister, his eyes wide open, unblinking. The rest of his body is lifeless…
Papers are scattered about the elevator floor.
The air around the five stands still…
Bum bum bum
A familiar ringing is heard. “Attention all contestants! A body has been discovered! Please gather in Mr. Hugh Stakes’ office!” Lucy’s cheerful voice can be heard across the whole hotel.
“Wait, what..?”
The four look at each other and then run across the hotel lobby to the south elevator.
...Ding!
The four step inside, thankfully the elevator is empty this time. As the elevator goes up…
Bum bum bum
“Attention all contestants! A body has been discovered!” A slight giggle can be heard over the speaker. “Please gather in front of the northern elevator in the hotel lobby!”
“What the hell’s going on…?” Luke muttered.
...Ding!
The elevator doors slide open. The first thing the four notice is that there’s a trial of blood across the whole hall, from one elevator to another.
Coming out of Hugh’s office is Devin, carrying Woody with his arm around her shoulder. He’s covered in blood…
Luke runs ahead of the group, and straight past Devin, entering Hugh’s office. Great Dragon takes Woody off of Devin’s hands.
“Thanks. He’s still breathing, but…” Devin glances back at Hugh’s office.
The others reach Luke inside, who’s standing right at the doorway.
On the floor, in the pool of her own blood, the body of Deirdre Durand lays. Poking out of her midsection is a katana, stained red.
Spoiler: Afterwards
It takes a couple of minutes for everyone to finally get together in the hotel lobby. Woody is still unconscious, and lays on a bench nearby. Wands assures the others that he’s safe and merely passed out, and should likely wake up soon. She then heads on over to the north elevator to investigate Sam’s body.
“Two people... “ Adel looks down at his feet, frowning. “H-how.. How could this happen?”
Lucy’s blue form flickers to life in front of the group. She sounds a bit static-y. “That’s right! Two of them, oh my!” She lets out a sarcastic gasp. “You should probably get to investigating! I’ll give you all a call when it’s time for the High-Stakes Game!” And as quickly as she appeared, Lucy disappears again.
“She has a point, that one…” Great Dragon grits his teeth. “We need to split up into groups.”
“R-right, I-I guess we don’t have a choice…” Tusbasa tries to hide under her hood.
“Okay… How about… This?”
Casino - Tsubasa, Max & Great Dragon
Hotel Lobby - Luke, Roxie, Ramon
Hotel Second Floor - Dale, Adel, Devin
Hugh’s office - Ryleigh, Ruby, Myrion
“T-that sounds good to me…” Tsubasa nods in agreement.
“What about Woody if he wakes up?” Ruby asks.
“I can keep an eye on him!” Ramon exclaims. “No need to fear!”
“Nothing’s going on on the 7th floor, right…?” Adel asks, this time.
“Nope! I gave it a quick check while we were all getting together.” Ryleigh nods. “All seems to be normal, so I wouldn't worry about it.”
“Good. Let’s all split up then. I don’t know how much time we have…” Luke gives the group a nod as they all divide up and investigate.
It’s not long after that until Lucy calls everyone to the trial room.
Entering the same scene as the last time, the contestants all gather to their specific podiums, this time, with three little signs taking the place of the deceased. One for Jenny, Sam, and Deirdre.
Ace, arms open wide, welcomes the contestants. “Ahh, it’s so very nice to see you all again. And so soon! What a treat.” He grins.
Woody, clothes stained with blood, stares at Ace coldly. “S-shut up!” He seemed to be fine and well, if not a little shaken.
“No, you shut the fuck up, jackass!” Queen shouts back.
“Heh.” Ace sits down on his throne and crosses his legs. “This is the High-Stakes game, to determine the killer, or killers, behind the deaths of Samuel Lockmeister and Deirdre Durand. I’m not going to give you a little sob story, you have other things to focus on, right? Like your potential winnings, eh? I’m sure some of you need the money.”
Spoiler: Money in the Pot
Initial: $2650
Ace’s Cut: $663
Final Amount: $1987
“Not as much as Hugh-bear, hm? Of course, it’ll be evenly split among the MVPs. How nice.” Ace grins.
“I’ve got a surprise for you, too. You didn’t need it before, but maybe this time will be different. But things can’t always stay the same, can they?” Ace points up to the screen above him, which displays the current lifelines available to the contestants.
Spoiler: Lifelines
Let’s Play Hangman! - All the characters jointly decide on a question to ask. The answer will be hidden, but each character gets to guess a letter. Two wrong guesses (or multiple, depending on the length of the answer) and the minigame ends. Order can be decided before minigame, but no discussion on which letters to guess can take place. (Price: $2500)
Gloves Off, Throw Down! - Two (or more) characters can argue on a point, at the end it’ll be revealed which side was closer to the correct answer.
(Price: $2500)
Galaxy Brain! - One character is chosen to put together a numbered list of everything they know about the case. At the end, they’ll be told the first three items that were incorrect. (Price: $4000)
Think it Out! - One player is chosen to answer multiple choice questions about the case in a rapid fire manner. The event itself takes place in public. Others may talk to the player about what to do but only the player themselves may make the decision. It ends when two incorrect answers have been given or the point of discussion for the dive has been resolved. (Price: $3000)
Feeling Lucky? It’s Roulette! - One player picks a range of numbers between 1-12,13-24, or 25-36. If the ball (read: RNG) lands in that section, they will get a random confirmation about the murder. Betting on a specific number grants a more valuable confirmation. Can be used up to three times during the entire competition (3 uses left). Can only be used once per High Stakes Game. (Price: $850)
Enter the Shark Tank! [New!] - Contestants nominate another contestant to be put in a shark tank. Whether or not they are willing is irrelevant. The Shark will sniff out any info they are hiding, though will totally ignore anything that would directly point to the killer’s identity. The contestants will be informed if the one in the tank is hiding anything, on a scale from “Major” to “Minor”, as well as whether or not it is relevant to the case/topic at hand.
Can only be used once during this specific High Stakes Game. (Price: $1000)
“A little bit of theming never hurt anyone!” Lucy cheerfully chimes in. “This lifeline is aquatic-related, like the aquarium! It’s only usable during this High Stakes Game, though.”
“On the subject of killers,” Ace continues, “Should there be more than one of them, in this specific case… The one who killed first will be punished.” Ace nods to himself. “How does that sound? Not like you can change my mind.”
“Let’s get this fucking show on the road already!” King shouts from his seat.
“Of course. The High Stakes Game begins… now!” Ace snaps.
“Maybe you guys should go over what you were all doing? Might be a good place to start!” Lucy flashes the contestants a grin, as they all face each other from their podiums.
Two victims…
And potentially two killers…
There’s only one way to figure all of this out… It’s time for the High Stakes Game!
"W-Why... why would someone kill two people... S-Sam and-- and Deirdre... oh, god, Deirdre..." Ruby stammered, tears already flowing from her eyes. It wasn't a very elegant sight.
"I-I-I need a f-few minutes... S-Sorry..." she hiccuped, gripping her podium to prevent herself from falling over. She'd probably go over her alibi in a bit. Perhaps after her writer was freed from the shackles of school.
Great Dragon looks a bit ill from finding two dead bodies. He couldn't believe that two deaths just happened in just one day.
"Dios…. Es una matanza!" The wrestler muttered, still shocked over the fact that the two dead were those that he didn't know well. "Why did someone have to go and do it...? Sam... Deirdre.. You two didn't deserves this..."
Great Dragon stood there, trying to get himself composed.
((Dios…. Es una matanza! = God.... It's a bloodbath!))
"Oh no... Oh no noo noo no nononononnononoo......." Max was mumbling to himself quietly. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NO, NO, NO! This can't be happenin'... this can't be happening, I tell ya!" He suddenly yelled out, his hat falling out. He looked very very stressed out, clearly at his limit. "This isn't real! It's... it's a goddamn nightmare! One person would've been enough... But some smartass thought they could get away with killin' two birds with one stone?! Literally? Are you serious? Both ol' Sammy and Deedee... and somebody attacked Woody-boy too?! This is too much! I can't handle this! I can't handle this, I tell ya!" He cried out, his entire body shaking as he did. He tried readjusting himself, but to no avail. He leaned against his podium, looking down and trying to calm himself down a bit. "Oh boy... oh boy.... steady yourself, Max... The worst is yet to come..." He continued murmuring to himself quietly. It was quite possibly the saddest pep talk one could've heard.
Slowly though, he gave a long sigh, and reached for his hat and put it back on. He shook his head. "I'm... sorry, everybody. I'm afraid ol' Max... I've got nothin' useful to give. I was in the... I was in the restroom, right. Yeah, from about... 3:50 to 4:10, I'd say. I ran into Dale after that. He was with Woody at the time, I think, and then he took me and his pals to pose for some photos in the aquarium while Woody went somewhere else... I'm sure he can tell you all about that", he remarked. "But we stayed there till 4:15, when we heard the announcement. That's... about all I did today, though." He put his hand to his head, almost in shame, shivering as he did. He didn't look particularly well.
"As for... the investigation, we didn't find anything noteworthy in the aquarium. I spoke to Coins a bit there... but he said nobody took anything from that gift shop place. Mr. Dragon also found some weird art on one of the slot machines but said it wasn't relevant to this in any way... And that's about it. That's all the info I've got. I'm useless, I know. Sorry for wastin' your time."
This whole time, Max spoke in a monotone voice, without any exaggerated gestures. It was a bit startling and unusual for the man to seem so stark and lifeless, but at the same time weirdly relieving to not have his usual bombastic self ruining the mood. He slumped against his podium now, completely silent. It appeared that was all he had to say for the time being.
Devin breathes deeply, trying her best to stay calm.
"What do you guys know about Dierdre? I never really talked much to her. I know she has a brother... She seemed like she came from a poorer background. I'm just surprised that she would be a victim of, well, something like this."
"I thought she was safe I guess," Devin glances lifelessly downward.
"Two people died so suddenly...how unfortunate."
"Alright... at 3:50 I was in the lobby looking at the fish! I can confirm I saw Max near the washrooms at that time." He thought for a bit.
"Actually... Deirdre was near, too! Did you, by any chance, see her?" He asked Max.
"Luke approached me by that time, too. We looked at the fish for a couple minutes before heading to the bingo room for 'Dungeons and Dragons'. Roxie was already waiting there, it was 3:55 if I remember correctly.
We decided to wait for Sam to arrive before going to look for him since the game was scheduled at 4:00. Great Dragon entered the room five minutes later and we just stayed there until Roxie decided we should go look for him...um... at 4:12! And, well, when the northern elevator's door opened, he was there!"
"I think that's all!"
"Y-You... You mean her sister, right? Bryn... Oh, gosh, her poor little sis..." she croaked out before going back to crying. Loudly.
Once Great Dragon managed to get himself composed, he started speaking.
"At 3:45, Great Dragon was up in his room, taking a refresher. At this time, it's hard to not stress out, given that Great Dragon's fans were worried about him. They have every right to worry. Anyway, he remains in his room up until 3:55. That's when Great Dragon heard Sam talking in the hallway. He heard Sam cuss and swear and then a little thud. Great Dragon thinks he fell over...
Great Dragon remembers that Sam have a DnD game going on, so he thought that he'd pop in and watch them have fun. That's when Great Dragon realizes that Sam was probably leaving his room to go to the bingo room. It was almost 4:00, the time in which they already started, or certainly would have by the time Great Dragon get there. So, he got up, did a quick stretch, and left his room.
Great Dragon head towards the south elevator and went down to the lobby. As Great Dragon went through the hall to the casino, he went past Devin. We hardly paid each other attention and didn't say anything. We didn't even make eye contact. So, before Great Dragon got to open the door to the bingo room, it opened and Roxie bumps into Great Dragon. Luke mentioned that neither Ramon nor Sam have bothered showing up yet. Great Dragon mentioned that it's strange that he heard Sam leave his room earlier today and he was shouting angrily. It should not be taking him long to get to where we were.
We sat and chatted for a while until Roxie declared that it's 4:12 and we should go find Sam. Great Dragon suspects that Sam might have headed back into his room because he perhaps might forgot some papers... So, we went to the lobby to use the northern elevator. Roxie called the elevator down and..." The wrestler grimaced at the memory of them finding Sam's body in the northern elevator.
"Regarding the investigation... Max covered almost everything. We investigated the casino and didn't find anything noteworthy. Great Dragon did find some sort of art on one of the slot machines which he determines to be not related to the case..." The wrestler said as he rubs the back of his neck with one hand.
Dale stood in place shaken by the fact that yet again he had failed. "I have failed you all, yet again I have failed to prevent anything from happening." Dale had tears in his eyes pushing himself to stop shaking "...but still we cannot waver, not till we have found the one responsible for this horrible crime!"
"To start I was In the aquarium with Adel, Ruby, Tsubasa, Ramon, and Woody, and eventually Ryleigh ran in looking like she had been running quite a bit suggesting we all dress like pirates, I of course refused as It could hamper my ability to perform my duty, but I did offer to take photos. Ramon also did not participate, something about destiny. Non the less at about 3:50 I had remembered I had need to speak to the cleaning bots and lecture them about the messes that as of the past few days have not been cleaned, as such I headed to the Infirmary where at 4:00 I had gave a stern talking to of the importance of there job and cleaned for a time...they had quite the temper about it though...I left them after the task was done."
"Shortly after I spotted Max exit the washroom and as such moved from the infirmary to Max, I also ran into Woody who had come from the casino at the time I approached Max. At this time which If I was to guess was about 4:10 Woody seemed stressed out over something and after a short greeting had left me and Max. Max after getting a good look at him had seemed quite sick, green around the gills if you would. but he waved it off, to keep an eye on him I suggested we both move back to the aquarium to where the others were. everyone that had been previously there was with the exception of Ramon, and after some pictures later about 4:15 Lucy's voice played over the speaker."
"With that Thus concludes my alibi. Now then with that out of the way lets speak about my investigation.
Adel and Devin and I investigated the second floor of the hotel with exception to Hugh's office. for my portion of the investigation I investigated the blood on the floor, there were footprints that led from Hugh's office , right to the northern elevator, where they turned around and faded upon reaching the southern elevator. Its important to note the blood found wasn't found anywhere else except in the one spot in a straight line.
with that my investigation is as well finished, thank you all for listening." Dale bowed.
"She was my friend..."
Adel tried his best, but he looked detached from the current situation. Still, he felt like he wanted to cry.
"God fucking damn it, I can't believe it!" Luke exclaims, almost slamming his hand on his podium. He stops himself beforehand and just sighs, leaning onto it with both of his hands and looking at the rest.
After taking a deep breath, he speaks up. "Okay... I'm gonna try my best. At 3:50 I was just chilling on a bench in the lobby, with Max and Deirdre in the distance. I got caught up in talking about fish with Myrion somewhere around that time. After a bit, Myrion and I make our way over to the bingo room. When we get there it's like, about 3:55 or something. Roxie's there too along with Great Dragon, and we talk about our characters for a bit. Until 4:12 nothing happens, Sam's not coming, so we go take a look. We go up the elevator and... yeah. You know. Bodies."
He wipes some sweat off his forehead and pauses for a while, probably getting his thoughts in order. "Right, so, our investigation. Roxie looked at Sam's body. Wands gave me a report or something. Said that Sam died between 3:30 and 4:30. Also that, quote, his breathing was interrupted somehow, unquote. So probably strangled. Or maybe they sucked the air out of the room. God knows. It also said that in the trial it'll give the same kinda report for... Deirdre, so..."
"Oh right! The investigation! I almost forgot..." he smiled sheepishly.
"Ruby, Ryleigh and I were in charge of investigating Hugh's office. I noticed that the blood near Deirdre had been smudged around, like someone kneeled in it!
There was also a trophy on the floor, a bit away from Deirdre... oh, and the katana was originally from the office, too."
"Deirdre... Oh my god, Deirdre..." Ramon was sobbing at his podium. "How could this have happened? You had so much to live for! You showed me that picture of your sister, who was waiting for you to get home safe... And... and the promise... How will you keep that promise now?" he wailed to the heavens. "You promised to teach me chess when we got out of here, and now I'll never ever see you again!"
Woody scratches the side of his podium with his clawed hand, a look of despair and rage in his eyes.
"Sam..." Woody trembles. "Deirdre..." The green-capped boy mutters, wiping a few tears from his face. "Whoever did this is going to pay! I swear it!"
The florist then proceeds to tell his side of the story. "You guys might be wondering why I ran off in such a hurry after the photoshoot. I...I realised I had lost my wallet, and I had to go find it right away. I-it wasn't just any wallet, okay?! My wallet had the picture of the love of my life...The very first picture I ever took of her.." Woody shakes his head. "Anyways, I basically looked all over the place for it. At 4:05, I went in circles in the trapezoid rooms, and I spent some time looking in the casino. I felt so stressed and anxious, and just had a really bad feeling..."
"When I entered the hotel lobby meaning to go up the North Elevator at 4:10, I ran into Dale, who came from the Infirmary, and Max, who came from the restroom. I went up and spoke to Dale and Max, and then went up the South Elevator, landing on Floor 2, the Staff floor. I finally found my wallet laying around the hallway, near the elevator, but..."
Woody looks down. "That's when I noticed that there were bloody footprints all over the floor. They went out of Hugh’s office and toward the North Elevator, but then came to the South Elevator, where they were faded. I-I ran into Hugh’s office and saw her...saw Deirdre's body..." The florist gags. "I tried to pick up her body, praying there was still a sliver of hope, but...The blood went all over me, and I just became, so...light-headed" Woody says, holding onto his head. "The last thing I remember is fading out of consciousness and seeing what looked to be Devin reaching out for me...that must have been at 4:15."
"I thought she was safe I guess," Devin glances lifelessly downward.
Ruby sniffled and looked up, her usually vibrant red eyes looking equally as lifeless.
"Y-You... You mean her sister, right? Bryn... Oh, gosh, her poor little sis..." she croaked out before going back to crying. Loudly.
"Oh yeah, that's right. I knew she had somebody at home who she was here for. Must've gotten the details confused with Jenny's family situation..."
"Anyway, did she seem desperate to help her sister? Do we think that maybe Dierdre got herself into trouble for the sake of her sister?"
Devin stops talking for a second.
"...Sorry Adel. I'm sorry for your loss and all that. I'm just trying to figure out the motive behind this."
"I-I don't really know... s-sorry... I d-didn't really talk to her much... o-or to S-Sam, really..." Tsubasa whimpered unhelpfully with her eyes down.
"Oh, um, a-alibis... y-you probably want that, h-huh...?" she added a few seconds later, almost as an afterthought. "Um... I was at the aquarium with a b-bunch of the others... A-Adel, Ramon, Woody, Ruby, a-and... Dale... Uh, R-Ryleigh came in and said w-we should dress up like p-pirates and take pictures... t-that was at about q-quarter to four... s-so some of us did that... um, a-at 3:50, Dale and R-Ramon left to do some s-stuff... t-then at 4, Woody p-pulled his costume off all of a s-sudden and left... t-ten minutes later, Dale came b-back with Max... h-he took some more pictures with us... u-until we heard the a-anouncement...
"U-umm, I checked the aquarium... b-but I didn't find anything... I-I was there the whole t-time, so..." she mumbled, sounding a little relieved.
After taking a few more minutes to catch her breath, Ruby swept aside a few stray bangs of black hair that fell over her face and sniffled.
"O-Okay, erm... let's find out who this jerk is. Sam, Deirdre... t-this is for you. Erm, anyway, my alibi is pretty much the same as Tsubasa's... Something to point out though is that Max looked, uh, weird... Like he had just seen a ghost or something! But other than that, yeah, that's my alibi. Me, Ryleigh, Tsubasa, and Adel were together the whole time, so it couldn't have been any of us..."
"Erm, anyways, as for my investigation with Ryleigh and Myrion... Myrion noticed the blood around Deirdre's body was smudged, like-- like someone was kneeling in it or something. He also found a golden trophy a bit away from her -- the first place prize for the National Arm Wrestling Tournament... the type of trophy it is probably isn't important, though. Erm, anyway, I-I felt... kinda compelled to mop up all the blood. Mainly because I didn't wanna look at it anymore... But I didn't."
"I did notice that, uh, there were bloody footprints that started right from the wall and headed straight outside the door. Other than that, um, the rest of the blood was either on Deirdre or the katana. Ryleigh found that above Hugh's chair was a, like, unsheathed katana like the one Deirdre was s-stabbed with... Below it were some hooks -- probably where the other katana came from. And, um, above the katanas was a small shelf that was empty. Other than that... yeah, I think that's it."
"Wait, the empty shelf.... Did that trophy used to be on the shelf?" Great Dragon asked, as he thinks about this for a moment. "The footprints... Well, we know that it was after Deirdre was killed. So if Great Dragon understands the footprints..."
Great Dragon ponders over this for a moment.
"The killer most likely wanted to use the northern elevator, but couldn't because someone else have called it. Then they have to go to the southern elevator to use it. And that's when the killer met Sam in the southern elevator, right? Since Sam probably saw the bloody footprints, the killer knew that they have to silences Sam for good and.... strangled him, Great Dragon think?" He sighed as he pinch the bridge of his nose. "There's not enough information to establish what Sam was doing up until his death. The same could be said for Deirdre..."
"Alibi... Right, my alibi..." Ramon looked around the trial room, noting in particular the three missing people, replaced by mocking substitutes. His eyes took on an unusual look, like he'd resolved himself to something.
"You've heard it from the others, I was in the aquarium at first. At 3:50 we were all getting ready to take photos - well, everyone else was - and I decided to leave. Destiny was calling out to me once again... I ended up in the gift shop at some point. Unfortunately I, once again, failed to encounter anything to do with the murder. No suspicious people walking around I could spy on, nothing! At 4:15 I heard the body announcement for Hugh's Office and, dismayed, made my way on over. This is just like with Hugh all over again!
"A-anyway, I investigated the hotel lobby with Luke and Roxie. Woody was there too, still unconscious, so I watched over him. I didn't really notice anything else during that time. Roxie checked out the elevator, which Lucy was keeping open for us to investigate. Sam was... well, dead, but there wasn't any blood around him. Just his DnD papers, scattered about, never to be used...
"Luke, as he said, got an autopsy from Wands. He covered that fully. Once we were just about done Woody woke up, we filled him in on what we found, and then we all headed here to the trial room."
"Um...alibis...sorry, I don't have much to say...I was with the people in the aquarium the entire time, taking photos. For my investigation, Dale, Devin and me went to the second floor. I didn't find anything in the staff room, other than some old burn marks on the table from the other day.
Jenny's office was apparently locked, too. And nothing really changed with the closet. That's what Devin said, anyways."
Ramon suddenly turned to Great Dragon. "You know... You were in your room, and then went to the south elevator. Why did you do that? Your room is right next to the north elevator, but you went all the way to the other side of the hall instead."
"Um... t-the smudging in the b-blood was... p-probably from Woody... r-right...?" Tsubasa thought aloud. "...G-Great Dragon said he heard a t-thud in the hallway... w-when Sam was out there yelling... d-did he just fall, or did s-someone attack him...?"
Woody nods. "The smudging was definitely mine. I remember falling...into her blood..."
"Can't say I knew much about her either." Roxie replied. "She seemed pretty cool for a chess player though. I was planning on talking to her sometime, but I guess I missed my chance. I don't really know shit about Sam either. I figured someone else would kill, but I didn't think either of them would end up as the victims. Shit's fucked up."
"Anyways, here's my alibi." She continued. "At 3:45 I was drawing on one of the slot machines because I was bored. I was pretty proud of it, but apparently some people think it's weird." She shot a quick glare at Max and then at Great Dragon. "And that's coming from two of the weirdest people here. You guys just don't understand art. After I finished it, I went to the bingo room for that Dragons and Dungeons shit. I was the first one in the room."
"10 minutes passed and it was 3:55. That's when the robot and Luke showed up. Sam wasn't with them. The three of us talked for about 5 minutes. At 4:00 Sam still hadn't shown up at that point, so we talked some more and another 5 minutes had passed. I got up from my seat to go look for him, but I bumped into Great Dragon. He joined us in waiting for Sam. We talked for 7 more minutes. At 4:12, I had enough, so I got up and called the elevator. That's when we found the body."
"As for my investigation results, Ramon and Luke covered them pretty well. I don't have anything else to add."
"That's probably why you were covered in blood..." Ruby noted. "And... do you know if you just fainted, or... could someone have possibly knocked you out? Like, do you remember anything hitting the back of your head? The trophy, maybe...?"
Great Dragon's eyes widen as Ramon asked him why he used the southern elevator instead of the northern elevator.
"Well, that's because Great Dragon have to do some cardio exercises. It's how Great Dragon stay in shape!" Great Dragon explains as he flex a bicep. "Great Dragon never really used the northern elevator anyway..."
Then Tusbasa speaks up about the thump that he heard. "So, you're saying that Sam was most likely attacked outside Great Dragon's room and dragged into the northern elevator?" The wrestler asked, a look of shock on his face. Then he realized something important about the bloody footprints now that he thinks about Sam's attack. "Wait, what if Deirdre's killer was unable to call the northern elevator because it was being used? That would explains why the footprints turns away from the elevator and towards the southern elevator..."
"I mean, it's Sam we're talking about here. He was probably carrying a load of DnD papers like usual, struggling with the load," Ramon said. "He was cursing and all, and ended up dropping them because he was carrying too many. Poor guy... even right at the end he was still being, well, Sam."
"That's true, Ramon. Great Dragon think that Sam chose to use the northern elevator since it's the closer one to his room, which might explains why Great Dragon heard the thump while in his room." Great Dragon reasoned.
"I'm glad you brought that up, Tsubasa," Ramon said, putting a finger to his forehead. "You see, to be honest I'd already figured this all out as soon as I saw the scene. You only need to piece together the available evidence to reach the single possible solution. Elementary!
"These murders took place over a very short time period. Deirdre and Sam were seen alive at 3:50 and 3:55 respectively, and they were likely dead by... oh, 4:10 or so. I don't think anyone really has enough freedom in their alibi to kill two people in that time. No-one except... Deirdre and Sam themselves!
"Now, don't get me wrong, this wasn't a suicide. They killed each other! To be specific, Sam tried to kill Deirdre. He cornered her in Hugh's office, and stabbed her with the katana. But Deirdre didn't die immediately. She was a fighter, that one... In her dying moments, she lunged forward and shoved a chess piece down Sam's throat!
"Sam began to suffocate, staggering about the place. He trod in Deirdre's blood by mistake, then stumbled out of the office, heading to the northern elevator. He probably wanted to return to his room so he could remove the chess piece undisturbed. The elevator was taking too long to arrive however, and he was barely able to think now that no oxygen was getting to his brain. He made his way over to the southern elevator, hoping he'd fare better there, but then heard the ding of the northern elevator arriving and headed back again. He got inside, the doors closed, and... Well, he suffocated to death, before he could make it back to his room. Thus concludes the tragic tale..." he finished solemnly, shedding a single tear.
"Roxie's right. When we found Sam, he was already pale. Speaking of which..." Great Dragon turns to Roxie. "Is there anything else you notice about Sam's body? Like if Sam was strangled, then there'd be markings on his neck, right?"
"Yes... that and he was still carrying his materials for the game. If he was in a hurry to prevent his death by choking on a chess piece, I don't think it's very likely he would still be carrying all of his stuff! "
"Aw, Dee..." Ryleigh muttered from her podium, teary-eyed and pale in the face. At least she didn't throw up this time. "You really didn't make it out...now Coach is really gonna be alone forever..."
The girl manages to snap out of her daze, sniffling a bit. "Oh, right, sorry!" She forced a shaky smile, somewhat inappropriate for, well, y'know. "I was in the aquarium taking a bunch of pirate dress-up photos with Tsubasa and everyone from 3:45 until we heard Lucy say the bodies were found. When we went to go investigate Mr. Hugh's office, I noticed that on the wall behind his big spinny chair was another sword like the one that was...i-in Dee, hung up on some hooks. There was another set of hooks on the wall underneath it, too. Oh, and that was all underneath an empty shelf that was higher up."
"I just don't get why those two would die... What led the killer to that choice? I just..."
Devin ponders for a while, tapping her foot in an irregular, rhythmic beat.
"Anyway, I was just in the pbar on my laptop until about 4:05. I used the restroom real quick and then it was 4:12. I saw Great Dragon before I entered the bathroom in the lobby. I went upstairs to grab a snack, but when I got up there, well, I decided to check out that bloody trail of prints. That's when I found Dierdre and Woody. Woody was on his knees over her, covered in blood, with his eyes shut tight, and he wasn't responding. I decided I'd get him medical attention and tried to carry him out."
