Robin looked at her shoes. Her cheeks were tinged red. "Asher, I- I'm the reason you couldn't fake your death last night. I... was worried you might be a witch. I'm glad I was wrong."

“That is certainly an interesting skill. Too bad we might not get to see it in action.”

“Well, Bylet,” Uncle Billy continued, turning to the young woman. “It look like you’re only one left. Except Morris but he not count. You’d best explain now, or we may have to VOTE for you.”

“I still feel like we no closer to finding witches though, even with this info...”

"Ah, alright," Asher responded, nodding in understanding. "I kind of figured it might have been you. Glad to have confirmation."

"Also... you said you had a theory as to who... who 'killed' Father in the book. ... Do you feel comfortable with sharing that information?"

"Um." Robin's eyes darted to the side very briefly before snapping back to Asher. "Since he revealed his role anyway... I delayed Mickey on the first night last time, and Basil was 'dead' the next night, so..." She trailed off as her gaze drifted to the doctor. "You also said you visited him that first night. Was it you, Mickey?"

Briggs popped in from out of nowhere.

"Hey, there, Asher. Forgot to tell ya something. You remember I stole James' talent, right? Well, uh...you might wanna knock on Mickey's door tonight. Get that poison out of your system. Cause uh, yeah. You're poisoned."

He gave Asher a really detailed pat near one of his pockets, feigning as comfort, before dashing off again. What did he steal???

"See ya, kid. Good luck."

“... I see. I suppose that’s what Mickey meant by the whole med school spiel,” Asher thoughtfully said, crossing his arms. He jumped a bit as Briggs suddenly popped into existence next to him. Asher remained silent until Briggs dashed off, and as soon as he did, he checked his pockets.

“... Looks like he stole that bodybuilding magazine,” he muttered to himself. “... Oh, shit. I’m poisoned. Great, just what I needed to hear...”

"Oh... Oh God." Robin turned pale. "Briggs!" she called out. "How do we stop the poison!?"

She didn't expect him to answer, though. She immediately began fretting over Asher instead.

"We could -- try purging it. Or - or maybe water will help? Try to dilute it?" She was getting frantic. "Mickey! Can you save him? M-maybe if we examine James's room, we can figure out what kind of poison it is!"

"Yea I visited Basil the first night." 'Mickey' nodded. "Which would make sense. I couldn't save him the second night. Cuz he didn't die."

He sighed. "Anyway, this is a complicated issue. Briggs over here seemed to have good reason for poisoning Asher. And honestly I think he could be a witch anyway. But yea I can save Ash. It won't be pretty, he might have diarrhea for a while but he'll live. But I can't be a hypocrite here. Not after I criticized my old man for almost being judge and executioner.

"I'll save him the next twilight if that's what people want from me. We'll put it to a vote. But I guess that only matters if he lives through this lynching phase." He snickered devilishly.

"I'm not gonna follow that 'majority' shit either. If more of you say I should let Ash die than those who don't, there you go. If it's a tie then I'll decide myself. I So let's get everyone's thoughts. And remember--we got a lynch to decide too."

Robin didn't hesitate.

"Please save Asher." She gave Mickey a desperate look. "I don't understand why this needs a vote. I don't believe that Asher is a witch. And even if he is, let's give him an honest chance like we did with Vincent. We can't just - let him die because it's convenient. Right?"

"... Alright. A vote sounds good to me. I'll refrain from voting, because I'd obviously vote for myself if I did. If I live, I'll deal with the diarrhea. If I die... well, nothing I can really do to stop that. I just hope the poison won't be super painful. I don't want to die, but if you all decide I should... then I guess it's best I accept my fate."

Asher tightly gripped his cane and squeezed his eyes shut. He took in a deep breath, then let slowly exhaled and opened his eyes back up.

"In any case... I'm not sure who we should lynch. No one seems like a good option at the moment..."

"... If Asher is involved with whoever killed Archer, then it would certainly be convenient if he could die like this. Letting him live for longer could be dangerous." Lucine quickly rationalized murder by inaction.

Lucine thought about it. She considered it. She reconsidered it. Then she sighed. "But Mrs. Teacher has a point, I suppose. This will also serve as evidence that you are what you claim. I will vote to save Asher."

Definitely save Asser, you goof,” Uncle Billy said, slapping a hand across Asher’s shoulder. “I want see what antics he get up to after disappearing. It would give chance to prove he’s telling truth too. But most important I not see much point in let him die. That already happen in story, and it not seem to leave lot of clues.”

Asher seemed a bit surprised by all the votes in favor of saving him, judging by his slightly widened eyes, but he didn't seem to be complaining. He jumped a bit when Billy slapped his shoulder, but didn't really react when Robin placed a hand on his other shoulder -- probably because it was a far more gentle touch.

"... This is awkward," he muttered as the two held their hands on his shoulders.

"Are you serious right now? Save Asher!" Zachary exclaimed in exasperation, "As if it requires any thought. Now onto more important matters . . . I'm kinda stumped as to who to vote for to have shot." Zachary placed a hand on his chin in thought.

"Oh! And on another matter, while we have some time, um . . . " Zachary began, flipping back through the book. He stopped at a page that had a very peculiar name on it: "Forsythia Schumate," he read the name aloud, wondering if he pronounced it right, "The letter mentioned Forsythia, and one of the books we were looking at earlier - I've already forgotten which, sorry, - was written by a 'Fennel Schumate.' That seems like quite the coincidence, if you ask me."

"Good grief, so that pest of a servant was a petty thief this whole time... Pathetic." Maurice spat. "We were fortunate that him and the hippie got killed in the "story" after all. Many mishaps were averted there." He sighed. "Anyway, what do you mean "no role"?" He asked Violet. "It seems quite suspicious to say that", he said, ignoring the fact that even he hadn't elaborated on the specifics of his role.

"Oh also, I think it's best if you save the boy", Maurice added to Mickey simply.

"For now it's best if we save Asher," Bertram said. "We'll learn more that way, and in any case I don't like the idea of letting Briggs get away with something like that."

He then addressed Violet. "I'm sorry, but, I find that very hard to believe given the circumstances. Making a claim like that only looks suspicious, as Maurice said."

“Yes, even you must admit this strange thing to say,” Uncle Billy said, “Especially with such little elaboration. And, as a man of my word, I will put pressure on it!”

Billy voted for Violet.

She then turns over to Billy. It's clear she's not amused, at the very least.

"Wyn can investigate you, of course," Bertram said. "There is one thing I'm suspicious about, though. We've now heard from everyone, so, what happened to Basil in the story? No-one has claimed they can whatever they did to him. The only person I can think of would be Allister, as I doubt the only thing he can do is run from trouble, but that does seem a bit of a stretch.

"We also don't know who knocked Twilip out in the story," he added. "It was enough to stop her from doing whatever it is she'd planned then."

"We also don't know how Asher was "resurrected", yes?" Maurice added. "One of us must have the capability to bring back the dead temporarily... Most likely a witch of course, but it's still in the unknown. So that only makes your claim more suspicious", he said to Violet. "Is it really safe to keep you with us when you're such an enigma to us at the moment?"

"Yes, even with all these claims, it seem like much left unanswered, and we no closer to find witches," Uncle Billy replied, "None of these abilities strike me suspicious either, aside from Vinny's. Considering Twily, witches most likely have abilities that could be seen as normal. So I not sure where this leave us."

"Here are my thoughts--the most valuable thing one can offer to another being.

"We have a role where somebody can investigate powers. We have another where someone can steal powers. We have another where someone can copy powers. But I do not think they are lies, I think they are repugnant, are they not?" It seems 'Mickey' meant to say 'redundant', so he kind of missed nailing his point there.

"We have other roles that could be fake. And roles that could be true, but useful for witches. I am unsure of our path forward--whether it's to find more meaning in these roles and our next victim from there or to find another road."

"Whoever drugged Basil was probably not a witch anyway," said Robin. "He was 'dead' for some time, and then came back. So he got to learn information from those of us who had died already. We have to assume that was the point of drugging him." She tapped her cheek. "If the person who did that was a witch, they would know that Basil was mortal, and there would be no reason to send him up to gather intel - unless they thought he was their mortal ally, but I highly doubt they would believe that."

She looked at Bertram and Billy. "I thought Violet might have done something to Basil that had a delayed effect, but she would have told us so - because that would be proof that she's not a witch."

Zach had been silently contemplating for a while now, and finally decided to speak up.

"Briggs, I find something very odd about your actions," Zach began, making the understatement of the century, "Besides your deplorable career of going around to rich families - who may or may not deserve the wealth - and stealing whatever you can from them, I've noticed some behaviors that point to you as being very likely to be a Witch of the Golden Land!"

:witnesstestimony:

"James, Basil, and Bertram survived in the story and it indicated that the Mortals had 'won.' Based on rules I'm not sure why I'm aware of, this effectively confirms them as mortals.

"James has also been confirmed to be the poisoner. The story, his claims, and his actions all lead credence to this.

"So why, then, would any self-respecting (or self-deprecating, even) mortal steal a very helpful power from a confirmed mortal? Eh? I posit it's because Briggs is a witch! Or just an agent of chaos - perhaps at least aligned with the witches - but in these times, they're effectively the same.

"I'm voting for Briggs," Zach crossed his arms, attempting to take the most confident stance he could manage. "Oh, by the way, in light of this, I'm a bit more sure that Asher is mortal now."
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a wonderful day.
