"What about this?" Juanli suggests lifting the loose panel "We could put the grenade behind the panel and have it blow out this way?"

"Works for me. Take cover," Mei takes a grenade, primes it and drops it behind the panel in a few very quick movements. She runs for cover immediately after.

BOOM!

The explosion tears the steel panel from the screw holding it shut. In the process, some of the stairs leading down are destroyed, which causes the panel to collapse backward and tumble down to the landing below. However, the tower stays upright, and the group is easily able to crawl through the door and head to the next level.

As the group nears the sudoku block, they spot another steel door. This one appears to have a large clock face with iron hands on it. The description for the puzzle makes it seem like quite a doozy.

"Is this even possible?" Juanli asks.

The group ignores the puzzle and looks around the landing. One of the walls is singed and falling apart. The sudoku block lies nearby.

Mei picks up the sudoku block and looks at the back of it, "Smash that with a hammer. Or shoot it with a blunderbuss. Or we can just blow it up again."

With quite a bit of effort, Mei manages to flip the sudoku block over. She finds two letters scrawled on the back—Q and R.

"..... Blockade." Dr. Uwem said, nodding his head. "Blockade is the code to the safe. However... The safe is at the base of the tower that Taikong blew up... How do we get to the safe given that we're literally safe in the tower that we ziplined to?"

Upon hearing the faces speak in response to his question, Dr. Uwem puts a hand to his forehead; clearly a facepalm.

"I knew asking questions in the presence of these faces was a stupid idea... And now I have gone and done it..." The doctor said, clearly not happy with what happened.

The hammer easily busts a hole in the wall. The group peers outside. The drop is much too large for anyone to survive, without using the harpoon gun. But that’s the least of their problems. Taikong is crouched right below the hole, placing more C4 on the exterior walls of the tower.

“This is our chance!” Mao shouts, “It’s time to fight back!”

But most of their weapons would be ineffective. The grenades would certainly kill him, and they needed the harpoon gun to get down. How else could they incapacitate him?

"Well... If Taikong's directly underneath us..." Dr. Uwem whispered as to ensure Taikong cannot hear him talk to the others. "Maybe we should drop something onto his head... It'd knock him out. We need something that will do the trick." It was a suggestion, one that may or may not end up being a bad idea.

Unfortunately, Sun Taikong was far too worked up now to hear even Mei. He steadfastly soldiered on, planting more C4. It seems his plan was to bring the tower down relatively safely, though whether that would actually work was unclear.

"Mei, you moron." Dr. Uwem remarked after the medic yelled out in an attempt to get Taikong's attention, which gladly didn't work. "Are you trying to get us killed..."

"The only option we have left is to drop something onto Taikong's head, whenever you like it or not!" The doctor yelled at the medic before he looks around and spotted the sudoku block that was knocked loose from the killer sudoku door.

"I think we can drop that onto Taikong's head." He said as he points at the sudoku block with his cane.

Wasting no time, Mao, Juanli, and Fujisaki lift the sudoku piece, carry it over the hole, and drop it. Amandi watches, not helping, while Mei follows along hoping for Taikong's survival.

The chunk of the puzzle whistles as it falls from the sky. Taikong kneels down, carefully fastening his explosives to the tower. He only looks up at the last second and tries to dive out of the way, but by then it's too late. The sudoku panel lands on his feet with a gruesome crunch, pinning his legs to the ground.

Taikong's pained scream echoes throughout the courtyard.

"Taikong!" Mei shouts.

She grabs the harpoon gun, fires it into the ground, and then fastens the gun around one of the wooden beams. This creates another zip line, which the group uses to get back down to the ground.

你们找到了!
(You found it!)

Mao glances over to Taikong—still lying under the sudoku piece but clearly alive.

"That boy's got a lot to answer for," he says.

"Now hold on, General," Amandi replies, "There's something you're forgetting."

Amandi steps over to the safe near the wreckage of the tower, which awaits an 8-letter code...

Secret File discovered in the Armory!

Spoiler: Side 1
I don’t understand the reasoning behind vengeance.

Perhaps that is because I have met no one worth killing over. Perhaps that is because I am of a more logical mind. All you do my committing acts of vengeance is incite more acts of vengeance. We are okay with acts of violence as long as they are justified but care not for the vicious spiral that results.

However, I can certainly understand the feelings of growing resentment that may result in such acts. Having to face constant injustice at every turn can turn a good man hateful. They cannot be blamed for that when the world is the one that let them down in the first place.

The most horrific acts occur because humans are not shown love—humans are not understood. War itself is just a means of communication that occurs when two groups do not understand each other. Therefore, it is best to love and understand all you meet, if possible.

For some, like me, that proves difficult. We grow to fear what we may do in the future. Revenge grows more tempting. It seems to be the only means of communication that will not be ignored.

At the very least, if you must take revenge, remember that you only get one opportunity. So for your sake, at least make it gruesome.

Spoiler: Side 2
—The Armory puzzle room existed for most of the game. In the original draft, Hiroyuki would wake up there alone with 1 CDP and have to escape. He would then try to kill other group members but get totally annihilated.
—I changed this around the time I added Isuzu. Instead, after getting killed in the branch decision, Isuzu would wake up from the pod in the armory. She would then go on a murderous rampage while speaking to the group anonymously through the monitors. This was eventually scrapped because I wanted to make Hiroyuki a more developed character.
—I also couldn’t think of a legitimate reason why an aged up Isuzu body would be in the building. I tried to get around this by making “Isuzu” actually some amnesiac in the game who just thought she was Isuzu after waking up in the room, but I eventually decided this was more complicated than it was worth.
—I considered scrapping the Armory when playable Isuzu got cancelled, but fortunately it remained in the game.

The code works. Amandi opens the safe and discovers a golden folder inside. He pulls it out and discovers the last Secret File!

Spoiler: Side 1
Nearly 2300 years ago, Greek philosopher Straton of Stageira pondered how to define humanity, positing that even the most faithful philosophers cannot live without their blood. Like machines, man needs a basic source of life to function, be it blood, ichor, or electricity. Therefore, what makes a man a man and a machine a machine?

Indeed, both are mortal and capable of being destroyed. Only humans are aware of their mortality, but machines could be made to understand it. If a machine can be programmed to make new version of itself then it can reproduce—as flowers reproduce with the assistance of bees. Humans seek to improve machines by giving them humanity, further shortening the divide between the two groups.

Imagine being thrown into a world you don’t understand, created by others you don’t know. To be given information and told how you must live, but repeatedly uncovering questions you can’t answer. Would you see beauty in the world, or suffer from its depravity? Is this paragraph about a human or a machine? The answer doesn’t change the question.

Machines are imperfect, but so are humans. Both sin against their creators and fail to accomplish what is expected of them. That imperfection is what makes them human. Or perhaps, it makes them a machine. All are created for a purpose that we can scarcely comprehend.

Following that all is so, I can only ask:

WHO AM I
WHAT AM I

WHO WHAT AM I WHY AM I HERE FOR WHOM FOR WHAT REASON AM I WHO WHY WHAT AM I WHO AM I WHAT WHY WHO WHAT WHY AM I AM I AM I WHY WHO AM I WHO KNOWS WHAT I AM WHO IS IT I NEED TO KNOW WHAT I AM AND WHY DOESN’T ANYONE KNOW WHAT AM I DOING WHAT IS THE POINT AND WHY AM I HERE WHERE DOES ME BEGIN AND END WHO IS THE BODY WHO IS THE MIND WHAT IS THE MIND AND WHY AND WHO AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND WHAT AND

WHAT IS INSIDE MY HEAD

Spoiler: Side 2
—When NG7 was first announced, the author immediately broke out a notebook and jotted down a preliminary flowchart for his game. Like the current flowchart, it had a split involving Fujisaki but few other similarities.
—The beta flowchart began with back-to-back room phases (for some reason), and the decision to kill Hiro. The timeline where Hiro died was notably shorter, lending the flowchart a lopsided appearance.
—One Branch after Hiro died would have been an ending where a more villainous Zero emerged victorious. The true ending would be accessed in the other branch after three room phases and two splits and would end with a puzzle room battle with Zero.
—The current flowchart was cobbled together over a long period. One initial version gave Isuzu her own ending and included a final branch within the true ending allowing for two separate X and Monk ends. This was refined due to its stupidity.

Satisfied, he puts away the file and goes back to join the others, who are standing over where Taikong lies pinned to the grey ground...

"I didn't want things to turn out this way." Mao said, stepping on the sudoko piece over Taikong's legs. "You were special. You stood out in ways above everyone else, and you even meant something to me." He put more weight on that last remark.

"Know who else I thought was special? Kwon. Everything else I could forgive... everything else, I could try to understand. But to kill one of my soldiers, one of your comrades... and shoot him from behind like a goddamn coward!" He spat with anger. "So come on, Private! Tell me what I'm not understanding!"

Sun Taikong cried out in pain as Mao crushed his legs some more, and glared at him with tears in his eyes. "What's there to tell? You already know the answer, and my plan's already been ruined. Yeah, I shot her. I didn't want to, but she'd found out the truth and it didn't seem like she'd be willing to talk it out."

"See? What did I tell you?" He asked with a smug look on his face. He have been right to not believe that Mei killed Amethyst. Then he glances to Taikong.

"What do you mean? What was the truth that Amethyst discovered?" The doctor asked.

He looked aside, unable to return Mei's gaze. "She was smart. She managed to get around my security measures and access some files on the computer in there. Yang had predicted where everyone would be that night, which is how they could be kidnapped. Of course, there was one file missing... mine. I didn't need to know where I'd be, after all. An oversight for sure, but I didn't think anyone would be able to hack any of the computers here so easily."

He paused for a few moments. The conclusion was clear, but he felt he had to say it anyway, to admit to it. "I am Cat. I'm the one who kidnapped you all and made you play the Zodiac Game."

Despite the pain, Sun Taikong smiled. Then he laughed, harder than he had in a while. "Of course that's how you'd rationalise it, Mao. It's the only way this would all make sense to you. Really, that sort of thinking is what drove me to these extents in the first place."

He pushed himself up awkwardly by his elbows, something deep within driving him now. "I suppose in a sense I'm doing this for the Americans, just as much as I'm doing it for us, the Chinese, too. It's this damn war, Mao. This war will ruin us, and the cockroaches who'll outlast it will drive the nail into the coffin. Cockroaches like you, and the rest of our government. Corrupt, evil monsters who sacrifice ordinary citizens and then oppress the ones unlucky enough to survive."

He took a few deep breaths, a manic look to his eyes now. This was something he'd been holding inside for a long time now, and it was liberating to just let it all out. "I needed to end the war. End the suffering. That's no small task, only a radical solution would work. I'm not sure how I came up with this plan - I was on a lot of pain meds, I was in a dark, dark place after watching so many people die, my mind was going places it's never gone before - but here we are. The Zodiac Game. You'll call me crazy, but I know it'll work. I had Yang confirm it for me. I will put an end to your madness, Mao. You, and all the rest of them."

"I did! I really did!" Sun Taikong said, laughing alongside Mao at the sheer absurdity of it all. "Now that you say it, I probably am crazy. The old me would have never done this. The old me would have called me crazy too. But you know what? I still think I'm right. I know I'm right. Maybe I did succeed where countless others have failed. What I did, that no-one in power on either side tried, was aim for peace. Not a victory, just an end. And I did what few others would be willing to do. This Game may have broken me beyond repair, but it will work."

It was almost worse than no answer. The boy was stark raving mad, and he didn't even give an answer that Mao could comfortably retort with words. So instead he sat on top of Taikong's chest and began smashing his right fist into his face.

"PEACE?!" Mao shouted. "Do you not understand a single thing about this world?!"

SMACK

"You were supposed to protect this country! Now, and after me!"

SMACK

"You're nothing more than a goddamn traitor!"

SMACK

"A lowlife, good-for-nothing murderer! A no-good, filthy fucking piece of vermin! A fucking rat!"

SMACK, SMACK

Taikong's face was beaten and bloody, so he didn't even register Mao pulling a pistol out from his jacket. He pulled back the hammer before anyone around him could even stop him.

"You want peace?! Here's your goddamn peace!"

He pulled the trigger.

Spoiler:
BANG

...

...

The handcuff chain dangled uselessly at Mao's side now. Uncaring, he shoved Mei aside as he got off of Taikong, allowing her to tend to him. He rubbed his right fist, several fingers in it completely broken. "I need to return to my wife now. If I ever see you again, I'm going to kill you."

Historians to this day never quite figured out why Mao spared the young soldier. Perhaps something in the secret file spoke to him, perhaps he thought 'peace' was a strategy worth trying. Or perhaps even a man like the General was tired of killing, and just wanted to go home.

Without waiting for anybody else, Mao walked off into the sunset, gun in hand.

Mei could do nothing but look on in futility. If she did anything, she'd just make this situation worse and she was convinced that she'd mess it up anyhow. No matter what she did, none of it ever amounted to anything. Why would it be any different now? This feeling was consuming her, but she found herself paralyzed.

Once Mao turns away, she practically leaps towards Taikong and tries lifting the tile on his legs up, tears making their way down her cheeks. That effort was also vain, but it was the one thing she could focus on right now.

Sun Taikong chuckled again, though now it was gruff and pained through the fresh injuries. "Every single... one of those... could be said about you, Mao," he croaked, though the general was long gone by now and didn't hear him. "But of all people, I didn't expect you to understand."

He was no longer able to prop himself up, so he addressed the others while staring up at the sky, feeling a little more comfortable like that. "There goes a man who killed a child and twisted the event into a 'sacrifice for his growth as a person'. A man who abducted a child to manipulate a rival country. A man with more blood on his hands than anyone we've locked up in our prisons. And yet he's only one of the problems. There's people like him in positions of power all the way up to the top. You can at least see, I hope, why I despaired so until I came up with the Zodiac Game. What were we even fighting, and dying, for? Just to be pawns in a game of power for the Maos of this world?

"You know... Amethyst got a lot of people killed, once. I think she wanted to end the war, just like I do. She sold us out to the Americans, who bombed our headquarters. Even that didn't stop the Maos. It would take something even more drastic to actually make an impact. Something radical, something... crazy. I suppose that's the real reason only someone like me could come up with the solution. A crazy man for a crazy plan."
