"He always was a strange one," Heinrich muttered after hearing the final part of the will, "I'm afraid I would be lying if I said I was interested in this puzzle's reward but it could be a fun way to pass the time during this storm so I'll try my best to solve it. Even though, I must confess that I've never been particulary good at solving mysteries."

Verrier hurriedly pulled Albrecht back into the wheelchair, quickly examining him to ensure nothing was damaged. "If it were that simple, the answer would just be 'knock down Gideon's tomb'," he responded to Friedrich as he did so. "That would be neither smart, nor would it stroke his precious ego. The answer can only be something as absurd as he was in life. Who knows, perhaps he rigged it so that one of us would die in our rooms tonight!"

"I do hope that he'd never go that far but then again, it was hard to know what to expect from him at times."

"Oh I'm sure he wouldn't really go that far," Verrier responded jovially, fanning the fuming Albrecht. "More likely he gave the construction workers some secret orders regarding the tomb, or he hid clues around Geistfabel, or some such thing. Or, perhaps," he sighed, "the answer lies within one of his books. Maybe this whole exercise is just his way of forcing us to read his stories."

"I suffered through each and every one of those damn things. You'll just have to steel yourself and do the same," Albrecht said sternly.

"Yes, master..." Verrier sighed again.

"Oh, that might be possible," Mia concurred hopefully as she dabbed some of the water out of her hair. "Maybe we just need to solve the mystery in his last book?"

Gideon’s last book was finished and had a coherent solution spelled out by the detective. Curious.

"I wonder... Just what father was thinking..." She mumbles under her breath, not eager like the others in the family, yet not entirely lacking interest.

"Bah, this whole thing is a waste of time! Let's just ask the mad fool, maybe he'll actually tell us the 'answer' for once instead of messing about," Albrecht suggested, eyes seeking Gideon out in the room.

"He's dead, master, remember? This is his funeral," Verrier reminded him calmly.

"Yes, yes, terrible shame that was, terrible shame..." Albrecht agreed vaguely. "That's what you get for surrounding yourself in murders your whole life! Always knew it wouldn't end well for the boy. It's a strange feeling, you know, outliving your own child. It's so... satisfying! Like you've won, in a way." He cackled to himself.

Erik blinked in response to Albrecht's statement, looking genuinely shocked by it. His grandfather continued to surprise, it seemed.

"I don't think that's... anything any parent should feel," he remarked to himself. "... Especially a caring one, which you definitely weren't towards all of your kids," he added in a much quieter tone of voice, not really wanting the senile old man with likely poor hearing to hear.

"A-Anyway," he began, awkwardly clearing his throat, "so Uncle Gideon wants us to solve a good old locked room mystery, huh? Well, he did love those... Just wonder how long it's going to take to find this ring. Ah well, this is what he wanted, and it's not like he's still here to change his mind. ... Sorry, that was insensitive."

"I thought everyone might enjoy a little treat to cheer up, so I- Oh my, is this a bad moment? " Julia asked, just entering the scene. She was carrying a tray with an assortment of cookies, her eyes darting around the room.

Fritz let out a sigh of relief as Julia entered. He walked over and escorted her further to the group.

“Not at all, Julia! I think we should all enjoy some treats to take our mind off things,” he said. “In fact, I doubt I’m the only one who’s getting stressed out by all this financial talk, so why don’t we just drop it entirely?”

Fritz grabbed one of the cookies and began chomping on it loudly.

“If there’s anything we should take from this experience, it’s a reminder of how short life can be,” Fritz remarked ominously, “So let’s enjoy the time we have left to the fullest, alright?”

"I agree with you, Fritz." Harly nods at his brother before taking a cookie from the tray.

"Hey, Julia? Can you be sure to save some cookies for my family later?" He asked the head servant before he began eating away at the cookie.

After a surprisingly lovely dinner with the construction workers (von Brandauers can really turn on the charm when needed), everybody went off to bed.

"Make sure to leave your doors unlocked." Meta joked, but she didn't laugh.

Secretly some of the people present probably thought there would be murders in the middle of the night. But ultimately morning arrived without incident, and the rain was gone. Many had to get back to their jobs, but some stayed behind to monitor the tomb for a few more futile hours. Ingrid was the last to leave, staying an extra night.

When everyone had left, Edna stood on the cobblestone path leading to the tomb's door. She made no attempt to try and open it, instead holding onto a quiet prayer in her heart that Gideon would walk out.

~~Questions Arc~~

~~Chapter 1~~

The reunion of 1987 had taken place in the Summer. While reunions had been inconsistent before, the family had committed to making an effort to seeing each other after Gideon's passing, and sharing new memories and experiences. Usually the reunions would take place in a vacation destination like Italy or Spain, but the tomb constantly brought the family back to Geistfabel. Yet it still had never opened, so it became more and more dubious if this closed room was truly meant to be solved.

The following year was a leap year, and so it was decided that it was only appropriate to hold it then for Gideon's birthday.

February 28th, 1988. 5:00 PM

[SCENE MUSIC]

"Juna--make sure the appetizers are properly arranged!" Edna barked. "And Julia, please be out to greet the guests!"

The reunion could be Edna's least favorite part of the year. Hosting a von Brandauer reunion was an entirely different beast than attending one, so her stress levels had hit an all-time high.

"Jolina! How have you not double-cleaned the main hall yet?! That scuff is going to be the first thing Cici points out!"

"Oh, they're here!" Agnes shouted, looking out the window to see a group of people arriving at the mansion.

[Characters are arriving for the reunion. Game will resume once everybody posts]

"Oh lord, they're already here..." Edna brushed her hair to the side, an exasperated expression on her face. "Agnes, come with me dear. We have to greet the family."

She headed to the front door, stepping outside and putting on a smile for those who were arriving. "...Welcome back. It's good to see you all again."

The first to greet Edna was her nephew, Erik, who walked up with a bright smile and performed a little curtsy. Compared to the funeral two years earlier, he was in remarkably more casual attire -- a brown jacket over a gray sweater, a thick, black and gray plaided scarf draped around his neck and shoulders, dark blue jeans, and a pair of black loafers on his feet. His blonde hair was a bit longer and messier as well, and he did look notably older and a few inches taller than before.

"Aunt Edna. Great to see you again as well!" he chirped. "I don't mean to interrupt you greeting everyone else, so I won't hound you. I just hope that you and Agnes have been doing well. Same goes for the servants as well, heh. I'm looking forward to catching up with you all!"

Lugging a large metal suitcase, the next person up the front steps is Meta, her hair covered by a wool cap. She glances up from her feet as she draws near and gives Edna a smile and wave.

"Sorry Edna, some rather unpleasant company followed me off of the boat!" Meta jokes, but to Edna and Erik it's a little difficult to tell if the joke comes from a place of genuine distaste. "I appreciate you hosting me very much. It's too bad that the event is going to be so busy we might not have time to properly talk."

Even though she is the oldest guest, Meta doesn't expect any help while so many important family members are following her in. After her words with Edna, she begins to head to her usual guest room.

Erik chuckled a bit at Meta's joke, though admittedly, it was a bit hard to tell if she was joking or not. Either way, he turned his attention to her... or more specifically, her large metal suitcase.

"Ah, would you like any help with your luggage, Miss Richter?" he asked as she began to head toward the guest room. What a gentleman!

As the guests arrive Jolina rushes into the main hall with a cart of cleaning supplies to finish the job that should've been done some time ago. Before officially getting started on the job she turns to face the guests arriving in the main hall.

"I hope that all of you will find your stay and quarters more than agreeable on this occasion!" She proclaims with a bow and smile. With that said she begins to clean parts of the main hall out of the way of what would probably be the guests' immediate path.

"A pleasure as always, ma'am," Verrier greeted Edna, pushing Albrecht along in his wheelchair. The old man was fast asleep, snoring obnoxiously. Even last year, at the previous reunion, the others had seen his condition had deteriorated since the funeral. Now it seemed even worse again. "How are things?"

Next came Raphael, wheeling a large black suitcase. Thanks to his mask and cloak, it was impossible to discern any significant changes from the last time he had set foot on Geistfabel. He stopped in front of Edna and, after a few moments of consideration(?), gave her a slight bow and then silently proceeded inside the mansion, presumably to his room.

Edna gratefully welcomed everyone as they entered, giving a polite smile and bowing as they did. "Yes, yes, I've been managing, you could say... Ah, Meta! Yes, yes, anytime... It's a pleasure to have you here again."

She stared back at the servants, expecting them to help with everyone's luggage.

"Ah, it's good to be back!"

Friedrich von Brandauer sauntered toward the front door, holding a large bag in his hand and dragging a rolling suitcase behind him. He looked mostly unchanged from two years ago: the same white suit over a gray shirt and combed blonde hair, but now with a pair of sunglasses on his face.

He looked much more in his element here than at the stuffy funeral. Smiling and waving, he threw a whirlwind of small talk at the arriving family members, trying to greet everyone.

"Good to see you too, Meta," he said, chuckling good-naturedly at her comment. "You do have to be careful around these parts, huh? Certainly lots of shady characters...Thanks for helping her with those bags, son. You're a good kid...Ah, good to see you Verrier. I hope our dear old dad hasn't been too much of a pain...Hey, Raphael! Did you polish your mask recently? It looks great!"

He didn't address Jolina, though it wasn't clear if that was intentional.

Upon arriving at the top of the steps, he put down his luggage, turned to her, and smiled, holding out a hand to shake.

"Good to see you, Edna. I'm sure the reunion will be safe in your hands. What do we have in store for today?"

"Oh! Yes, yes, welcome, Friedrich!" Edna greeted the man brightly, almost a little more enthusiastically than one might have expected her to. "Yes, well, we've been hard at work for today, but hopefully you find our services accommodable! We have quite a lot planned, so you can just sit back and enjoy today. Yes, yes..."

This was a boldfaced lie by her, considering all she and the servants had planned for today so far was dinner. But hey, the others didn't need to know that, right? Surely they would be able to improvise something on the spot for them...

Edna cursed herself internally for her own lack of imagination. At the rate things were going, today was going to be disastrous for her.

Ingrid appeared next, also carrying a large rolling suitcase behind her but otherwise contrasting Fritz quite a lot. She gave everyone present a stiff smile and a frigid greeting. "... Good day to you all. I hope you've been well."

"Ah, Agnes!" she opened her suitcase a bit to dig around in it, her tone finally warming up a little. "Hold on, I have something for you..."

After helping Meta with her luggage, Erik made his way back to the entrance, waving a bit at Raphael as he passed by him before stopping next to his father.

"Aunt Ingrid, nice to see you as always," he greeted, flashing her a far brighter, friendlier smile than her stiff, frigid one. "And I'm sure we'll enjoy ourselves, Aunt Edna. But, ah, still, my thanks to you and the servants for making the accommodations for us all!"

Heinrich arrived, albeit rather slowly. Evidently, the past two years hadn’t been kind to him, he looked a lot frailer and was relying a lot more on his walking stick in order to move. “Good evening, I hope you’re all well. It's always been a pleasure to attend these reunions and to see all of you. Maybe it's because of my age and that I may not be able to experience many more of these but I'm really starting to appreciate how precious the few times when we get together really are, ” Heinrich jovially addressed everyone, laughing off his remarks.

"It's very pleasant to see everyone in such good spirits!" Julia smiled and greeted everyone who had arrived as well.

"Oh, Mr. Heinrich! That's very sweet, I'm sure you'll be here to join us for many years. Now, let me help you with your luggage, everyone! Thanks for helping out earlier, Erik!"

She smiled and, in an impressive move, she managed to take everyone's luggage (except Ingrid's since she's looking for something in it) and moved it all to their respective rooms. The Weber family does not believe in multiple trips.

“Welcome, welcome everybody!” Agnes smiles wide, clearly much better off than when the family saw her at the funeral, of course. She gratefully nodded and smiled as everyone came in, still a fair bit too young to fit in with the adult crowd just yet.

Cecilia arrived with Friedrich and waited her turn while he greeted Edna first. She raised an eyebrow at Edna's response to him but otherwise remained silent for the moment.

"It's nice to see you Edna." She said. "Thank you for having us." Looking past her into the main, Cici noticed Jolina still cleaning and shakes her head.

"Hmph. I'll need to say something to that maid later..." She mutters, not wanting to ruin the moment.

"I'm certainly looking forward to it," Friedrich replied, not catching on to her deceitful statement. "And there's no need to be so formal. You can call me Fritz."

As Cici came up the stairs, he joined her, continuing to greet the new arrivals. He acknowledged Ingrid with a curt nod.

"Good to see you too," he blandly remarked.

Harley Nicholas von Brandauer puts down his suitcase, which was then picked up by Julia to be delivered to his room. Harley is glad that he doesn't have to drag the suitcase up to his room.

His hair have noticeably have gotten a little longer than they were, but his hair still looks really short. Not to mention that his beard and moustache have grown out some. Overall, he'd definitely have aged in 2 years, therefore making him now 44 years old. He's wearing a blue coverall with tan work boots. The coverall was open slightly at the top, revealing that he's wearing what appears to be a white shirt. However, if there's one thing that'd make the servants run for the hills, it's his coverall. The coverall was covered in black stains; oil stains and grease stains from working on the cars. Indeed, Harley must have gotten dirty after working on the cars.

"Hey, it's good to see you, Edna." Harley said as he greeted the lady of the house. "I take it that you're getting used to the responsibilities that Gideon have left to you, yeah?"

People certainly did notices that Harley's wife and two sons doesn't seem to be with him this time. Perhaps he may know the reason why his family couldn't come to the reunion.

"Ah, good to see you, Harley!"

Fritz approached his brother, holding out a hand, only to notice the grease stains on his uniform. He discretely acted as if he was just moving to adjust his sunglasses.

"Hey, where's Christina and, uhh...the kids?" Fritz asked, "It's a little strange to see you without them. Could they not make it?"

Lynde strutted out of the kitchen holding a tray of hor d'oeuvres from the kitchen, this time he was wearing a slightly more traditional outfit of sweater vest and nice slacks, topped with an apron made of a t-shirt from Madonna's "who's that girl?" Tour, as well as headphones connected to a walkman playing Material Girl at a notable level. After setting down the tray Lynde noticed that the family had arrived and smiled and headed straight for Fritz with a smile.

"I like your outfit! It's very Miami Vice! Have you been watching it? It's not exactly my favorite but I do enjoy it quite a bit. And also how are you uncle Fritz?"

"Oh yeah, Fritz... I apparently neglected to tell you and Ingrid on the way here." Harley explains as he cross his arms. "Both Karl and Daniel both came down with the flu, so Christina and her family volunteered to take care of the boys while I have to go attend the reunion." He seems genuinely saddened by this.

"When was the last time that I came to a reunion by myself...?" He mulls over it before answering. "I think it was probably around the year that I got married... Well, before I got married."

Upon hearing Cici complains about his uniform. "Yeah, I apparently got 3 or 4 customers who wanted me to fix up their cars... By the time I finished up the last car, it was already time to get going so I didn't have time to change out of my work outfit. Sorry about that, I'll change once we get settled in, okay?"

Spoiler: Roleplay Rules and Regulations
1) You cannot break into the tomb. It will be opened when the plot allows it.
2) Characters generally have keys to their own bedroom and the servants have master keys. You cannot swap or collect keys. You can assume if this happens that I've allowed it (if people started swapping keys, I would just need to write alibis where they get swapped back for some arbitrary reason and that will be annoying to everyone)
3) If you want to die early for participation-reasons, let me know. Otherwise I will choose victims myself.
