Ingrid was frozen in her chair, re-reading the note over and over. There was no doubt it was Gideon's handwriting.

After properly processing what just happened, she calmly set the box on the table and crumbled the card in her hand.

The fist holding the card in a white knuckled grip shook ever so gently as she said with a smile: "... Agnes. Edna. Where exactly is Gideon right now?"

"Pardon my bluntness, cousin, but... you were there, two years ago. He passed away in a guesthouse, his face was crushed posthumously and put back together... Do you not remember that at all, Agnes, Aunt Edna? I get that it's a memory you'd probably rather block out, but..."

Erik shook his head in disbelief, glancing over to Edna as well with the same furrowed brow.

"How... long ago did you get this note from him, Agnes?"

"Of course I remember, cousin. It was one of the saddest moments of my life." Agnes said, hanging her head a little.

Perking up a little, Agnes replies to his next question. "Er... About ten minutes ago? Perhaps a little less? Oh! Should I have brought him in? He didn't seem too interested on sticking around, though... He could still be outside." She said, hopefully also answering Ingrid's question.

"Of course I remember", Edna snapped suddenly at Erik before regaining her composure. "It was... a trying time, to say the least. Some days I just wish I could see him again one more time..." She looked at the ground sadly.

Quote:
"... Agnes. Edna. Where exactly is Gideon right now?"

"You would have to ask Agnes, I'm afraid. I haven't seen him since the day he... left us." She responded plainly.

"Agnes. I know Gideon's passing has hit you very hard bu-," Heinrich was still dealing the aftermath of his coughing fit so he took a small break before continuing, "But just denying his death isn't going to make things any better."

Jolina walks into the dining room pushing a cart with various drinks and glasses should anyone ask. Upon hearing the conversation about Gideon being not dead, the bountiful smile she entered with fades to raw confusion. She pushes the cart to the side of the door and stands idly next to it, looking rather disappointed and increasingly confused.

Verrier returned with a glass full of some remedial drink, only to stop short upon hearing the bizarre conversation. "I must say, I'm not sure I follow..." he said a little uselessly, setting the drink down by Heinrich's bowl. By the smell it seemed to contain honey, ginger and other such things. He seemed well used to making such drinks, but given what was happening now there wasn't an opportunity to talk about it. "Gideon is dead, but he spoke to you? Would that not, well, be a contradiction?"

Juna's grip on her tray tightened, her face being stuck in a phase of utter confusion and a hint of realization.

"Just... what's going on here? Is this a... hah, reunion prank?" She asked nobody in particular.

"Isn't 'it was a ghost!' one of the solutions you're supposed to avoid in a mystery novel?" Verrier joked desperately, hoping he was somehow misunderstanding what Agnes and Edna were saying.

"Come on, Agnes... Gideon's dead for two whole years. There's no way that you'd see his ghost! Ghosts don't exist!" Harley said as he slam an fist onto the table, causing silverware to clatter.

"If this is your attempt at telling a ghost story, you'd need to try harder than that! You know full well how I don't like ghost stories..." It was true for most of the von Brandauer family. One time after hearing a ghost story, Harley couldn't sleep for a week.

“I do not believe mother can see him... Though, I’ve given father some messages on her behalf.”

Agnes recoils at Harley’s reaction, trembling a little at his bluntness and loud words. “I-I’m sorry, Uncle, but...I wouldn’t joke around like that...” Agnes speaks softly, nervous and possibly a little frightened.

"Everyone..." Ingrid spoke up. "This is Gideon's handwriting. I would notice if it was faked."

"And outside... Outside! Where outside?!" Ingrid snapped, getting up from her seat. "Did he come from his tomb?!"

"He's a ghost?" Verrier exclaimed nervously, hovering awkwardly by the table instead of returning to his seat. Albrecht just looked confused as he tried to keep up with the conversation. "H-he wouldn't happen to have said anything about his death, would he?" Verrier asked, before smacking himself with his fan. "What am I even saying, ghosts can't exist... Their existence would contradict all our current science!" He was rambling a little now. The situation had him spooked.

Juna's brow furrowed in sudden realization... as for what, it wasn't quite clear, because she immediately went back to a look of confusion. She smiled awkwardly at Agnes, "Do you, perhaps, need a glass of water, ma'am?"

Heinrich quietly thanked Verrier and took a sip of his drink before responding, "I'm sorry to be so blunt about this but the 'Gideon' you're talking to simply isn't real. Like I said before, it may be very tough but you just need to accept that he's gone and move past this."

"Oh, I've seen him as well so it's not just Agnes. Please stop picking on her and Edna." Lynde said as he distractedly finished licking his soup bowl clean. "Juna, this is the best soup I have ever tasted. Thank you so much and i can't even imagine what the rest of the meal will taste like!"

Lynde was frugal, living in the family guest house and thanks to his own skills and the exposure he had gotten from his relationship with Gideon his art was in demand.and even if his art wasn't cheap to make, he was probably flush if we are being honest.

Agnes refuses Juna’s offer politely and takes her seat at last, leaving Ingrid’s side.

“Thank you, brother.” Agnes smiles a little. “Father has said nothing about his death. And he HAS spoken to me. He even gave me a gift for Aunt Ingrid. She even said so herself! That was his handwriting!”

Agnes pouts and tries some of the soup. She doesn’t comment on it but her eyes tell the full story, she loves it.

"Normally I wouldn't believe you all, but Aunt Ingrid was really close to Uncle Gideon, wasn't she? Especially when it came to mysteries? If anyone would recognize his handwriting or if it was plagiarized, it'd be her..."

Erik sighed, his gaze darting between Agnes and Lynde.

"How, uh... how long ago did this start? His... ghost visiting you guys? Right after the funeral, or is this a more recent occurrence?"

Friedrich's complexion appeared to be growing quite ghastly throughout the discussion, but he maintained a calm expression.

"This is complete nonsense," he replied, "Gideon could have just written that letter before he died. As for all these sightings...maybe he put hallucinogens in the soup broth. I don't know. But I saw his body. There's no way he's still alive."

Fritz paused to wipe his face with a napkin and mumbled to himself.

"Still, if he is showing up again, I think we'd be a lot better off if someone shut him up."

"We're talking about ghosts now?" Albrecht spoke up, finally latching onto the conversation. "We tried to make a machine that could summon ghosts, you know. An unbeatable army, just imagine! It didn't work, though. Ghosts aren't real. Agnes is probably just seeking attention again."

Verrier glared at Albrecht. "Now, master, we should hear her out. Even if ghosts are... unlikely, to put it mildly, there must be some explanation here. Gideon has a history of pulling stunts, from what I hear."

"... Ahem. Yes, I'm sure that ghost army would've went swimmingly, Grandfather," Erik replied. It was hard to tell if he was more stunned at his grandfather's claim or the current topic at hand.

"Anyway, if Lynde and Agnes have both seen Uncle Gideon, and Aunt Edna at least heard him, and if the handwriting is clearly his and not plagiarized... I don't know. And it couldn't have been written years in advance, I don't think. How would he have known about the book Aunt Ingrid gave Agnes today?" he pointed out.

"A pretender, maybe?" Juna wondered aloud, "Alas, that wouldn't make sense either, I think. I must somehow lean towards this being real, but I'm interested in the answers to the other questions. Or is that out of place for me?"

"Oh yeah, Erik brings up a good point. How did Gideon know about the book that Ingrid gave Agnes? And it better not be this ghost nonsense." Harley said as he looks at the people who claimed to have seen and/or heard Gideon, concerned for them. He was wondering if they're losing their mind.

"We've checked the tomb. Repeatedly. It can't have been opened, as there's no way to close it from the outside," Verrier said. "Gideon's dead. I'm sure of it." He sounded strangely certain about that.

Albrecht, meanwhile, had gone back to his soup.

"I just... I don't have any hard evidence, but I really do think he died that day," Verrier insisted.

"What? Gideon's dead?" Albrecht exclaimed. There was an awkward silence. "Ah, I'm just messing with your heads. I know he died 2 years ago. I'm not senile yet, I'll have you know!" Then he went back to his soup again.

Raphael sat at the dinner table with the other family members, but the section of table in front of him was bare. Even though he would dine alone afterwards, for the first meal at least he could sit with the relatives. That being said, sitting at the table as a black lump doing nothing as everyone else dined and conversed gave an even more dour impression than usual.

It would certainly be easy to imagine that someone with a chronic medical condition (such as severe burns) could have a lot of medical expenses and MORE THAN ANYTHING. REALLY NEED A LOT OF MONEY. RIGHT NOW!

...

Through the eyes of Raphael's mask (not that anyone was likely to pay enough attention to him to notice this), his eyes were flitting from soup bowl to soup bowl.

Planetbox wrote:
"Of course I am!" Fritz replied with a delighted laugh. "Too bad you didn't catch the season finale. It's really been making waves in the entertainment community!"

"It was unlike anything I had ever seen," Raphael piped up. Evidently, he had seen the show. "It was something that could only be made by someone truly special."

Kachu wrote:
"Hm? No, that'd be silly, wouldn't it? He didn't want you feeling left out today. Father gave it to me earlier."

The mask tilted slightly to the side. "Gideon passed away two years ago... didn't he?"

"That's debatable..." Erik mumbled after his grandfather spoke before clearing his throat. Loudly. "Anyway, I have to agree with Verrier here -- I truly think he died that day. If he told Aunt Ingrid to give that book to Agnes two years ago, I think she would've told us by now. And even though his face was reconstructed... why? Why would he have us believe he's been dead for two years before deciding to turn up again? And besides, I'm pretty sure Aunt Edna, Lynde, and Agnes would tell us, wouldn't they? At least one of them. I know that he's pulled crazy stunts in the past, even if I wasn't witness to many of them, but this... this is just a whole new level, don't you think? Faking his own death? And even if he did, where and how did he get the body we saw...?"

He huffed, shaking his head with disbelief.

"No, he... he has to be dead. I'm sure of it. But if that's the case, yet Agnes got this letter from him today, then..."

His voice trailed off. It seemed he didn't know how to finish that sentence, or he didn't want to.

"As the one most often in charge of cleaning the tomb I can attest that it is likely that the body hasn't been moved be it living or dead, Gideon or other." Jolina confidently states, proud to say that she has indeed done work.

She quickly realizes how probably useless her testimony is and corrects herself, "At least I have never noticed anything out of the ordinary on my shifts. It's possible something could've happened while I was not cleaning it..."

Meta quietly enjoys dinner, doing her best to make small talk with the others.

Unlike much of the family, Meta has lead a steady and frugal lifestyle. With no family or friends to support and a long history of good judgement, there are no more difficulties lined up down the road for her.

All said, Meta has had enough money to retire for a long time, and yet still hasn't. It has never been her goal to retire. Her satisfaction comes from her occupation.

As the letter is discussed, Meta takes a deep drink from the cup of coffee she was provided. Her eyes close as she takes a moment to relax. She sets down the cup, "If Agnes, Lynde, Edna, and Ingrid say that there is evidence that Gideon yet lives, then we at the very least can't take their claims lightly. I can't really say for sure that this would be too far for Gideon or beyond his capabilities."

"It's just... difficult to believe,. I guess," Erik began, letting out a small, nervous chuckle, "I mean, ghosts? Supernatural stuff? That just seems... so odd, farfetched, and just unbelievable to everyone who's never experienced such things before. Which is likely everyone at this table, save for you, Lynde, and Aunt Edna."
