As the meal moved onto the next course, the topic of conversation uncomfortably hung in the air. And then just outside the window in full display of the room, snow began to fall. Hardly impossible, and yet given the circumstances it almost compounded the overall sense of dread.

[Just interjecting this, the previous conversation can still continue]

Meta seems to shrink in her seat a little and takes another deep drink of her coffee.

After finishing the gulp, she nods her head at Agnes, "I was too fast in jumping in then, carry on. Perhaps you'll understand that we are too hasty to solve this like another of Gideon's stories."

Her eyes dart to the window for a second, acknowledging the snowfall, before she looks back to Agnes intently.

While listening to the ongoing conversation regarding Gideon, Harley was next to notice the snow falling.

"That's weird. The weather forecast never mentioned anything about there being snow..." Harley said as he looks around the table. "I have a radio that I use to listen to music when working on the car. I'm certain that it's up in my room in my suitcase. Would it be okay if I bring it down so we can listen to the weather forecast?"

“Speaking of Gideon...” Cecilia began. “When is Agnes going to take a DNA test to prove she’s his daughter? I don’t know about all of you, but I can’t help but find it a little suspicious how quickly Edna announced she was pregnant after the two of them began dating. Perhaps she was the product of one of her old flings, and then convinced poor Gideon that she was his. I know I’m not the only one who would feel better with her acting as the interim head if there was proof that she was his daughter.”

Cecilia smiles and nonchalantly takes a sip of her wine which she received at some point as she waits for the others to respond.

Erik cleared his throat again, clearly a bit uncomfortable at the topic.

"Er, Mom, I feel there are more... pressing issues at hand here," he said, not so subtly trying to steer the conversation a different direction. "Namely the fact that Uncle Gideon is still somehow here, alive or otherwise... Besides, ah, even if she isn't blood related to him, he still treated and raised her as a daughter during the time he was alive, yes? So... for all intents and purposes, she still is his child even if they aren't related by blood!"

Edna almost choked on her dinner from the sheer tonal whiplash from Cici's sudden proposal (perhaps because of something more?) "I-I... what kind of question is that? As if she wasn't my own flesh and blood... Why on earth are you bringing this up now, of all times? T-truly, this is quite preposterous... Besides, as Erik said, we raised Agnes together. She is our daughter, end of discussion."

She was noticeably shaking as she said this.

Verrier seemed like he wanted to say something, but kept quiet as Edna spoke instead. He frowned at her words, noticing something odd, but chose not to mention it.

People were momentarily distracted from the drama as Albrecht belched. He used to be quite a fussy man, strict on manners, but apparently little of that remained.

"Erik dear, now's not the time." Cici said, waving a hand dismissively. "There's more important things to discuss than ghost stories."

"I don't see what's so preposterous about it." She stated. "If Gideon truly is her father, then you have nothing to hide. If you're that confident that she is Gideon's spawn, then you should agree to the test. I'm sure it'd put everyone at ease one way or the other."

"W-what is all of this...?" Agnes blinks a handful of times, glancing between her mother, Cecilia, and Meta, who previously said something to her.

"Um... I don't..." Agnes scratched her nose awkwardly... "He's my father... There's no way... again..."

Agnes hanged her head low, and slowly stopped eating her food. She seemed extremely uncomfortable at this subject. "Father... He named me in his will, aunt Cecilia..."

"I really don't think this is the right place or time to do this", Edna insisted. "It's not as though we'll be able to do a DNA test on this island, yes? Even still though, what does it matter to you? Does blood mean anything at all when compared to familial love? Why, just look at Lynde. He wasn't born into the family but he has established his place with us ever since arriving at this island. It should not make a difference."

She tried to return to her dinner but wasn't able to eat because her hands were blatantly trembling, sweat running down her palms.

Harley looks around the room, dumbfounded by the fact that nobody seems to be concerned about the snow.

"Seriously... People are suddenly concerned about whenever Agnes is Gideon's daughter and other things, and not concerned about the weather?" He mumbles as he pinch the bridge of his nose. "Snow is falling outside right now, and it's in plain sight for everyone to see..."

Harley was very certain that when he checked the weather forecast, it didn't mention anything about there being snow tonight; which struck him as very unusual. He just wanted to double check the weather forecast just to be sure.

"It is winter, so it's not that strange. Isn't it just that thing? Climate change?" Verrier responded to Harley distractedly. "In any case, I agree with Edna. Is now really the best time for this?"

Albrecht would have probably loved what was currently being revealed, but his eyes were unfocused and everything was just going in one ear and out the other. He did cackle when he happened to look up and see Edna in distress though.

"Is a secret, high-tech lab truly out of the question on this island?" Raphael wondered aloud. "Or Gideon may already have DNA test results on all of us stashed away somewhere."

"Maybe it would be better to talk about this another time and perhaps more privately," Heinrich weakly addressed Edna and Cici trying to diffuse the situation and taking care not to pick a side.

"Now, I wonder why you're so concerned about this, Cecilia." Ingrid said. She had very obviously been in a bitter mood ever since the matter of Gideon's 'ghost' came up, even though that stiff smile never left her face. "I wonder what motive you could have for questioning Agnes' status as Gideon's next of kin..."

Fritz raised an eyebrow at his wife at the change in topic. He didn't express agreement with her, but he didn’t rush to Edna’s side either.

“I believe Gideon left the headship to his ‘next of kin’ at the moment,” Fritz remarked simply. “I guess I’m curious if, legally, the next of kin has to be related by blood. Perhaps you know more about that, Meta?”

Fritz continued carving his slab of mystery meat as if this topic were as commonplace as the weather. Speaking of which...

“I just say though, I am a little concerned about that snow,” he added, “I suppose we’d be safe in here, but I’d rather not be late leaving...”

Juna looked at Cici with an expression that could really only signify annoyance, "I believe the burden of proof is typically on the one making the accusation, no?" She said with a hint of snark, "I'd also have to agree with others that souring the mood on an occasion like this is of questionable cha--... utility."

"Friedrich. Instead of badgering your own niece like this, don't you think there's someone else at this table that could bear to answer a few questions?" Ingrid asked.

"Tell me. How much do all of you know about Verrier Bain?"

"Um..." Mia interjected softly; she'd crept through the dining room door quietly just now, presumably so as not to cause a big disturbance after her long absence, but judging by the arguing going on, there probably wasn't a need. "I-is everything alright?" she asked no one in particular.

The sudden change in topic caught Edna off guard. "The... doctor..? Not much at all... He's not told me very much about his past... Well, other than-" She paused. "Still, what could he have to do with any of this, Ingrid?"

Someone also gives Mia a summary of everything that’s going on. In short, everything is not fine.

Quietly the servants serve the next course—grilled octopus. They seem to be too entranced by the conversation to not eavesdrop.

Heinrich seemed very confused by Ingrid's question, "I can't say that I know much about Verrier before he got employed by us. However, from what I've seen of him and how he takes care of my brother, I have nothing but respect for the doctor. Ingrid, is there some sort of issue with him?"

Pleased the attention seemed to be shifting away from Agnes, Ingrid continued: "Well then, let's do a quick test. How many of you know that Verrier is the one with the authority to sign any contracts on father's behalf?"

Erik looked toward Ingrid, curiosity evident in his multicolored eyes.

"What makes you bring this up, out of curiosity?" he politely asked. He didn't seem to mind the sudden change in topic away from Agnes, though -- he was just wondering why this in particular was what it was changed to.

"So long as master is fit and healthy, it shouldn't be a problem," Verrier said smoothly, glancing over at Albrecht. Albrecht seemed to be nodding off, despite the fresh food in front of him. "I'm giving him the best medical care I can, I'm not about to let him end up bedridden." Despite the negative attention, Verrier was still smiling as usual. Perhaps he, too, was just happy people were no longer focusing on Agnes.

"That is exactly right, Heinrich, and that is beside the point, Verrier." Ingrid said. "All I want is for everyone sitting at this table to think about just how much- or how little- you know about this man who has so much power over father. That is all."

Agnes pokes her octopus, hardly eating any of it. She tried to stay as small and quiet as she could, to keep attention off of her. Whether this works or makes her stand out even more is debatable. She had little interest in discussing anything, though the topic currently being discussed seemed to still make her more uncomfortable.

"...Yes, I can't say I'm too apprehensive about him just from that", Edna admitted. She seemed a little relieved the topic had changed with the colour returning to her face but didn't seem to suspect Verrier much. Perhaps she just didn't care about Albrecht dying. Who knows!

“I have no motive.” Cecilia smiled. “I’m just simply curious, that’s all. I can’t help but think the family would be better off right now if Harley were in charge instead of a child. He would most likely be the interim head if not for Agnes, no?”

She turned to face her brother in law. “Don’t you agree?”

"U-um..." Mia swallowed the bit of octopus she was chewing and politely cleared her throat a couple times before speaking again. "With all due respect... I don't think it's your place to decide something like that... B-besides, even if you WERE to discount Agnes, Ingrid is Gideon's eldest sibling, right?"

"The point will be moot as soon as someone solves Gideon's riddle, anyway," Verrier pointed out. "I fully intend to put Albrecht back in his rightful place as head of this family. Maybe then we can all stop arguing."
