At the very least the group decided it was best to not stick around in the study. As per the Detective’s instructions, they left the crime as is. They all filed out the door, Ingrid leaving last and closing the door behind her.

The closed room could not be solved… the easiest solution seemed to be that Albrecht simply had a heart attack and died, but that did not explain how he got upstairs.

“You know… I bet that tomb was opened tonight." Ingrid said ominously. "Somehow it was opened and locked too."

“What makes you say that?” Cici asked, looking slightly frightened.

“Call it a sister’s intuition.”

Edna looked at Ingrid curiously, but kept her thoughts to herself.

~~Questions Arc~~

~~Chapter 2~~

Spoiler: May 1981
[Scene Music]

Heinrich and Albrecht stood in stunned silence as Gideon lectured them. The two men were raised to watch for enemies on all sides, and yet the steepest betrayal in their life came from within the family.

“Gideon… ” Albrecht growled. “I must implore you to reconsider. You do not want to make an enemy of me.”

Gideon looked at the two brothers without a shred of sympathy. “I already spoke to Grandpa. I will be the next head of the family. It’s done.”

“Please don’t do this. You’ll destroy this family.” Heinrich pleaded.

“It is not my mistakes that would destroy this family. You two should count your lucky stars that denazification never caught up with either of you.”

Heinrich and Albrecht couldn’t even face Gideon as he said that. Nor did they want to look at the papers he had thrown at them… documents of their time in Nazi high command that a great deal of money went into concealing. That Gideon had spent a greater amount unearthing.

“Your secret is safe with me.” Gideon quipped, turning around. “I don’t want the von Brandauer name in the mud any more than you do. Not that I’m now the head at the very least.”

“And you expect us to just sit here and take it quietly?”

“Ideally. The sooner you two die, the better.”

...

“Can you make us some coffee, Julia?” Fritz asked. “I think it’s going to be a late night. Dad has some assets we need to figure out the division of.”

“Why don’t you join us, Verrier?” Ingrid said with a friendly smile that almost certainly had no cunning beneath it. “I’m sure you understand this kind of thing better than we do.”

The group split up. The younger kids led the way to the guest house, deciding their minds would best be occupied away from reality with a game of Scotland Yard. Some adults join this activity as well. Edna is too exhausted to do anything and heads to bed.

Mansion Dining Room: Heinrich, Ingrid, Fritz, Harley, Cici, Mia, Verrier, Meta, Julia.
Mansion Master Bedroom: Edna.
Guest House: Lynde, Agnes, Erik, Juna, Raphael, Christof, Jolina.

Spoiler: Dining Room, 10:30 PM - 11:55 PM
The dining room group heads inside, Julia locking the door behind them.

CLICK

The dining room door lock was the loudest one in the house, somehow both scary and oddly satisfying to hear. The adults began talking logistics. The conversation goes on for some time.

Raphael sat alone in his room, voraciously devouring the meal that had been brought to him, his mask removed and to the side for the first time since his arrival at Geistfabel. While he momentarily acknowledged the exquisite tastes and textures of the food as it passed through his throat, his primary purpose at this point was simply filling his stomach. Normally he would have eaten shortly after the family's main dinner, but the Detektiv's arrival and Albrecht's departure threw a wrench in that.

A large glass of wine was on the table as well. Given his situation, alcohol was perhaps not the most prudent choice, but this situation was exactly why he needed it.

Edna was in the process of crying herself to sleep.

It didn't seem to be working.

"Do we even know how much of the assets father have left to begin with?" Harley asked as he takes a sip from his cup of coffee. "And even if we do know how much father have, the issue is who'll get how much of father's assets..."

"Well... to be frank, I'm not sure if it feels right that my siblings and I get some of father's asserts..." He looks at his brother and sister. "Given that we have our fair share of... unpleasant memories with father. Right?"

"He didn't leave a will, unfortunately," Verrier informed the others. "I don't think he really expected to die so soon. Even still, isn't it rather early to be discussing this?"

DING

The chime of the grandfather clock in the hallway went off. It was midnight, and the conversation had barely progressed. After the twelfth chime, there was silence in the room for a moment.

CLICK

Instinctively, everybody turned their heads to the dining room door upon hearing the sound of the lock. Slowly, it creaked open.

... there was nobody there.

Harley seems spooked out when it was revealed that nobody opened the door to the dining room.

"Are we sure the door was actually locked when we began our discussion? If we're all here and the other folks are over at the guest house... Then w-who opened the door to the dining room?" Harley seems very much spooked out with a mixed expression of paranoid and fearful on his face.

Ingrid was confused for a moment, but was the first to get up to check the door. "Who's there?"

Nobody appears to be in the hallway. Ingrid checks further down, but nobody is around.

Ingrid returned to the dining room, halfway expecting everyone there to be gone or dead in the brief time she took to look outside. "... Okay, well. Either this is a very boring prank, or something that'll be really really important later. Either way, no one's there."

"Okay, if you say so, Ingrid. W-We should be fine then..." Harley said, though he was shaking with fear, which apparently contradicted what he said.

"I-I don't think I'll be able to get some actual s-sleep tonight." The mechanic muttered to himself.

Lynde was fully bundled up against the snow with the game of Scotland Yard tucked under his arm, when the door outside opened and showed him the others coming to the guest house.

"oh hi! sorry it took me awhile, I apparently misplaced the game, and once i found it I figured I may as well double check that Grandpa Albrecht wasn't anywhere in the house. No sign of him I'm afraid. Do you want to play here instead? Do you think Raphael may want to play?" Lynde said, hand fidgeting between going to undo his scarf and keeping it on to go and ask Raphael about joining the game.

"We had to take his abuse longer than anyone else," Fritz replied, "If anything, we deserve some financial compensation."

After the group got demonically ding-dong ditched, he turned to the door and raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, what the hell is it now?"

He slowly rose from the table and followed Ingrid out of the dining hall, running his gaze along the hallway.

"Hmm...we should probably check on Edna," Fritz said, sounding a little concerned. "She's the only other person in the mansion, after all...though I don't see why she would pull a stunt like this."

Fritz made his way up the stairs and to the Master Bedroom, then knocked on the door.

The door opened. Edna was inside, alive and well... As well as you could be during a time like this, of course. Her eyes were still red from all the crying she had been doing. "Hm? Fritz? Is s-something the matter?" she asked, her voice shaky. "D-did something else happen..?"

"The door was definitely locked before..." Verrier muttered, going up to follow after the others as they checked the corridor.

He joined Fritz in checking on Edna as well. "You've been in here this whole time?" he asked.

"Y-yes... I didn't leave once." Edna nodded simply. She seemed to be shaking a bit, though it could just be attributed to everything she had to endure today. "W-what happened, exactly?" She asked Verrier, looking confused.

"Nothing much," Verrier replied, in what he hoped was a reassuring tone. He then quickly summarised what had happened downstairs. "Normally I wouldn't think anything of it, but with all that's happened, well..."

Cici didn't seem too upset by the death of Albrecht. She was mostly concerned for Fritz and Erik's wellbeing.

"O-oh... I see... Sorry I can't help with that", Edna said, shaking her head. "I didn't really see or hear anything at all... Maybe you just forgot to lock the door? I wouldn't be surprised if you were just hearing things... Or it could be somebody from the guesthouse doing something nearby that you just so happened to miss... That's all I have to offer though, sorry."

As the conversation came to an end, she went back into her room, closing the door behind her.

"Well, if it wasn't Edna, we'll know who it was as soon as we talk to someone from the guesthouse." Ingrid, who was also there, said. "Surely they'd notice someone leaving for long enough to be here at midnight."

Before Edna closed the door, she was looking intently around the master bedroom while speaking. Occasionally the suspicious gaze would stop on Edna for a few seconds.

Juna paced back and forth with an uncharacteristically stressed look. Her steps were in tune to the sound of a nearby clock ticking, but Lynde's entrance is enough to snap her out of that trance, though she still looked worn.

The servant furrowed a brow, then gave a heavy shrug in response, "He struck me as one of the least affected by the recent events, but that might be because of the mask."

It was hard to hide the forming smirk, but Juna suppressed it.

"... anyway, you should ask."

"Recent events? Is the Detektive's presence that unnerving to him?" Lynde, who had not been in the manor house when Albrecht had been discovered and thus was totally unaware of Albrechts passing, or it's status as a locked room mystery.

Molina, who had been tending to the guest house during this time speaks up. "Ah, you haven't been told yet... I regret to inform you that Sir Albrecht has passed. Some suspect foul play, but so the scene has been sealed off by the Detekive." She puts rather plainly.

Everybody goes to bed after some time (and Lynde is properly filled in on everything).

Harley heads into his bedroom, trying to keep the thought of ghosts invading his family home out of his head. He goes to lock the door, and stops.

[Scene Music]

… would that actually make him safer? Or is that the exact kind of thing that would entice Gideon to kill him? For now, he left it unlocked and sat on the end of his bed, watching the snow outside.

The only safe way to survive… was getting as far from this island as possible.

4:00 AM

Spoiler: Guest House
Erik wakes up in a cold sweat, unable to fall back asleep. He gets up and walks out of the guest room, deciding that a nightcap would do him some good right now. Unfortunately the wine cellar is locked.

He opens the door to the servant’s quarters, staying away from the bedroom area where Julia should be sleeping. He looks in the key cabinet but can’t find the key to the wine cellar. He decides to take Julia’s master key, but she’s not in the quarters either.

He knocks on Juna’s door, and after some time she gets up. He apologizes profusely for waking her but tells her he needs her master key, and that Julia wasn’t in her room. Juna says it’s fine since it’s her job (but has some attitude about it regardless). But unfortunately the master key doesn’t work on the wine cellar door and they will need the cellar key.

Spoiler: Mansion
Ingrid tosses and turns throughout the night, ultimately too on edge to sleep fully. She needs another clue to solve this mystery. Something that would-

Her eyes settle on the gift, the one ‘Gideon’ gave her. Carefully, she unwraps the present and opens the cardboard box. Inside are some plain, white socks, but they’re wrapped around something else… a key. The wine cellar key.

She runs downstairs, getting dressed for the weather outside.

Meta blinks away tiredness, sitting up in her bed. She feels as though it would be better to lay down, close her eyes, and go back to sleep, but this would be the time she would wake up had she slept on her own schedule.

She is dressing up when she hears someone in the central hall outside her room.

She peeks her head out of her room and calls to Ingrid, "Oh, what's the matter, Ingrid? There isn't something strange, is there?"

Ingrid made a lot of noise, first grabbing some clothes that would hopefully let her reach the guest house with enough feeling left in her fingers to use the key, and then when she passed Meta in the hallway. "It's the key to the wine cellar!" she helpfully explained.

In a feverish pace, she ran out of the manor and towards the guest house, leaving the door wide open behind her.

Ingrid and Meta rushed to the guest house. Meta struggled to keep up with Ingrid due to her old age, but tried to focus on the snow and her footprints.

... were those tire tracks?

Meta shook the thought away and continued to follow Ingrid.

They arrived at the guest house more or less the same time. Erik and Juna were still up, and were surprised to see the two women burst through the doors. Ingrid didn't take the time to explain, but the look of panic on her face was enough for Erik and Juna to follow them downstairs. Ingrid decisively stuck the key into the door and twisted-

Spoiler:
[Scene Music ~ BANGER WARNING]

It was hard to not immediately faint at the sight, let alone the metallic scent that assaulted their sense of smell. Several wine bottles had been smashed off of the wine rack, no doubt in a struggle. In the midst of the mess was Julia, a confused look frozen on her face as she stared blankly at the ceiling.

A knife was stuck in her... she had been eviscerated from sternum to stomach, and her entrails had begun to spill.

Verrier hadn't been able to sleep. He kept pacing around the bottom floor of the mansion, periodically checking in on Albrecht's room. It was, and had been for hours now, empty.

When someone came rushing down the stairs, he ran to the foyer to check what was going on. He seemed almost disappointed to find that it was just Ingrid getting one of her wild ideas again. He didn't get a chance to say anything before she was already outside. He initially felt little desire to follow after her, but a short while later curiosity got the better of him and he followed after them, using the posts as guidance. By the time he arrived, the body had already been discovered, and he recoiled in horror. At the very least his medical training kept him from throwing up like poor Agnes, but even he was horrified by the sight.

Erik gagged at the sight of Julia's body, having to back away quite a few steps as he began to hyperventilate.

"Oh, god... Oh my fucking... fuck... Julia..."

He forcibly shut his eyes and turned away from the body, unable to look at it any longer.

"... W-Who could do this...?" he whimpered, tears welling in his eyes. He didn't want to believe there was a killer after Albrecht's death, but this... this was evidence of murder. There was no mistaking it.

Lynde rushes downstairs, very clearly having not slept at all, with several peices of red yarn strewn over him from what any one who knew him was a conspiracy board. Upon seeing the slaughter before him he immediately looks to Juna and offers her a hand to hold, while still muttering to himself "Knife in the Cellar? A twist indeed... Such a shame. Such a nice woman."

Ingrid almost fell over, staring at the gruesome scene. With the adrenaline as high as it had been for the past few minutes, she hadn't even considered what she would find in the wine cellar.

It wasn't the cozy manor, her father's relatively clean corpse and the closed room he was found in that did it. It was in this wine cellar, cold and exhausted and staring at the carnage, that Ingrid von Brandauer really understood the kind of situation she was in.

"... Agnes! Don't look!" she snapped, after finally noticing her niece right behind them.

Verrier didn't even try checking the body. He knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Julia was dead. "Of all people, why her?" he muttered. "We all loved her. Such a brutal way of killing her, too..." Realising he might be one of the few keeping a level head at the moment, he then raised his voice and said, "Everyone, stay back for now. This is a crime scene. We're not yet sure what happened to master Albrecht, but this... this is something the police will need to handle."

Erhardt was woken from his loud snoring by the commotion and groggily rushed to the cellar, tumbling down the stairs on his way. After a less-than-graceful recovery, he exclaims quite loudly, although whatever he was actually trying to say wasn't clear. He bounds back upstairs and reappears with the large metal briefcase he had in the study.

"Another murder! Stand back please, everyone!" he exclaims, as he produces a new roll of crime scene tape from his case and strings it up all over the cellar. He also grabs a few dozen evidence markers and starts marking everything in sight, taking careful notes on his pad.

"Dr. Verrier, would you please examine the body? The cause of death is quite clear, but perhaps there are some subtleties the untrained eye may miss?"

"You, uh, trust a civilian with that?" Verrier said in surprise, wondering just how professional this detective really was. Still, maybe it would be best to examine the body sooner, while it was fresh. "Very well. Do you have any disposable gloves in that briefcase of yours?"

“Of course! No crime kit would be complete without... this!” the detektiv produces a smaller metallic briefcase with a flourish. “The medical examiner’s kit! It should have everything you’ll need.”
