“Oh I’m sure we’ll have some denouement of some sort where we cover any holes that are left.” Gideon waved his hand. “Or maybe they could be solved if Ingrid gets this wrong. Either way, it’s not as fair if I’m not putting something on the line myself.”

"... That's fine by me." Ingrid said, snapping her copy of ghost fables shut and tossing it aside. "Whatever happens now... These two years will finally be over. I'll finally succeed or fail."

"Either way... I either solve this closed room, or I die in it. So let's begin."

"I'd expect nothing less."

Gideon stepped down from the judge's seat, deciding this would be better dealt with face to face. The twins faced each other, at a distance apart not unlike from a duel in a Western. Everybody else was gathered around in a semi-circle, watching.

"You have two things to solve--how the imposter got into the tomb, and how the closed room was created. If there's anything you want clarified, you can ask."

"First: you said the builders did not do anything to the tomb the family was unaware of. That's not nearly enough, this family has proven time and time again they're aware of many things they won't tell me. Give me the red: The builders did not do anything to the tomb Ingrid von Brandauer is unaware of." Ingrid said. "While we're at it, let's prune this move as well. In red, please: The tomb only has one exit, that being the door with the crossbar."

Fritz stood on the sidelines awkwardly, seeming to have a lot of pent-up rage but no one in particular to direct it toward.

"I'd say that's a little harsh, Gideon, but I don't exactly want to be destitute because a servant lucked out," he mumbled, "Though I am wondering why we're still here. Are we just supposed to stand here and wait for Ingrid to stumble into the answer?"

"It's a shame that I wasn't picked, because boy, do I have my theories..." he let loose a vaguely off-putting chuckle.

"First things first, it can't hurt to summarize the truths said so far. There's no secret mechanism or hiding place in the coffin. A single body was in the coffin during the funeral. The imposter's corpse was in the tomb at the end of the story. The builders did not do anything to the tomb the family (or others) were unaware of--this of course applies to Ingrid von Brandauer. There's no secret hiding place constructed in the tomb. The painting is irrelevant, but it was in the tomb as expected at the end of the story. The tomb has no secret passages, and the only exit is the door with the crossbar. The tomb was locked at the end of the story before the group broke in. The tomb had never been broken into before that moment. And Gideon was not in the tomb at the end of the story." Gideon took a deep breath. "I believe that's everything."

"What's the point, Fritz? Even if Ingrid solves the mystery of Gideon's tomb, it won't bring back the people who were murdered, like Mia for example..." Harley reminded Fritz of the fact as he glances over to Mia. "We're dead and that's pretty much it, honestly."

The mechanic looks back and watch on as his own sister, Ingrid figures out the truth.

Ingrid nodded, carefully considering the red before speaking again. "Another one, in red: The body placed in the tomb during the funeral, Gideon von Brandauer, was most certainly dead."

"... I am desperately asking you to repeat this one in red, Gideon. Your death didn't just hurt me, you hurt Edna and Agnes as well. I just want you to give it to me in red that the Gideon I knew wouldn't do this to all of us for the sake of some cruel trick."

"It's a certainly a hint, yes." Ingrid laughed bitterly. "Blue truth. The body placed in the tomb wasn't dead, and after the funeral they could leave whenever they wanted. This means the tomb wasn't a true closed room, and putting the impostor in there later in the story was trivial."

The tomb was checked frequently, and it was always locked.” Gideon responded quickly. “And of course one can’t stay in the tomb forever without running out of air, so living in the tomb forever even with supplies is impossible.

"They wouldn't need to leave and never return. If you'll deny it, then say it in red: Between the moment the tomb was closed two years ago and the very beginning of the events of the story, no living human being has been inside it. I won't accept any lesser red."

“And once again I can’t repeat it!” Gideon smiled, seeing that his sister hadn’t lost her edge. “Moving on—how was the closed room at the end of the story created?”

In contrast to Gideon, Ingrid closed her eyes and sighed. "I don't know what I expected. I guess you and my brother I've been grieving for so long weren't so different after all."

"Forget it. More red: The Impostor was killed by another person. Repeat it."

Ingrid didn't miss a beat. "More. 'The tomb wasn't broken into' isn't enough. I want to hear 'the tomb wasn't broken into nor broken out of'."

Gideon's pen tightened. The possibilities were dwindling, but he still had room to counterattack. Just let her keep thinking.

"The imposter was the corpse found in the tomb. He is the same as the man impersonating Raphael throughout the events of the story. No other character is allowed to use the name 'the imposter', including those like Mia with false identities. Is that sufficient?" Gideon asked, "I would hate for this point to not be clear enough. And the imposter was certainly dead before the tomb was broken into."

"That's, enough. Yes." Ingrid answered. Her next question took even longer as she considered what was even left.

She saw check in every move available. "... The impostor did not lock the tomb himself. Repeat that."

"The crossbar... Was in place when we broke in." Ingrid continued. She didn't even know what to think if this was wrong, but anything went at this point.

A thought began to form, one that came up to her uncountable times for two years. Was there even a solution to be found? Or was this just one big, spiteful trick?

"The only way to 'lock' the tomb is with the crossbar. So of course it was in place, I already said it was locked." He looked at Ingrid like a predator might look at their prey. They were nearing the end.

What happens when a side is left with no valid moves? In chess, the rule that a player cannot put their own king in check can create a situation where a player cannot move at all. In that case, a draw is called. Not a loss.

A mystery is not chess, however.

"... This crime is impossible. The whole point of this game was to identify the impossible crime, wasn't it? Then this is it. It has to be." Ingrid tried to pass the lack of an answer for the true answer.

A reader can't exist without a writer. And a writer has no purpose without a reader, especially one who writes mysteries. "A mystery exists to be solved. I don't just think you're amazing, Ingrid. You... complete me. And without you, I'm nothing. You didn't just lose me the day I died. I've just wandered, without any purpose. And now we get to be here again today, against all possibilities."

"... Two years. Two years I've spent mourning you, tearing out my hair over your damn riddle, suspecting my own family of killing you, all of that for someone who might not even have been dead at all!" Ingrid screamed at Gideon. "I haven't had a moment of silence since then. I've been seeing your ghost in every shadow. And for what? A perfect mystery? A trick no one can see through?! Did you put us all through this just for the satisfaction of making a mystery we can't solve?!"

“That’s where you’re wrong. This won’t be the perfect mystery—it’ll be the perfect tragedy. And the fitting conclusion to this wretched family.” Gideon laughed. “But you won’t be around to hear the answer, so I suggest you say your goodbyes.”

"I-Ingrid..." Edna looked down at the floor, a little horrified that the family would be condemned to stay in limbo forever. "S-so what was the impossible crime..? Was it something we overlooked o-or-?"

Agnes frowned. "The perfect tragedy... Perhaps I would've enjoyed writing something like that."

"I have a strange feeling that learning the answer would be more aggravating than satisfying. And yet... I still wish to know. How curious." She let out a long sigh.

“Alright then, I think that we’ve spent enough time on this. The trial is OVER. Please allow me time to prepare the answer key for all of you.”

Without being given any time to respond, the floor underneath Ingrid opened up like a maw. It consumed her and she fell, not even having time to scream.

“Ingrid!” Mia shouted, jumping to the hole and barely grabbing Ingrid’s arm. She barely supported herself on the ledge, trying her best to pull the two of them up.

… but Gideon simply snapped his fingers. And then the floor closed, slicing off Mia’s arm and trapping Ingrid in the depths below.

Everybody stood dumbfounded. There was nothing they could do but watch. Mia desperately pounded at the ground crying--her arm appeared to be slowly regenerating, not that she paid any attention to it.

“Nothing to be upset about everyone.” Gideon laughed. “Ingrid can leave her Hell anytime she wants--so long as she finds a way out.”

This was no longer a game. Whatever anybody had to say about Gideon, he always wanted his readers to solve his mysteries. And yet there was no doubt that Ingrid had been set up to fail. What happened to him? Even if he had been here for eternities… this was not the same Gideon they knew.

Gideon stood silently, existing the courtroom without another word.

That was close… if she asked me to repeat THAT in red, it would’ve been over.

Final Chapter

Spoiler: ???
Ingrid found herself in all too familiar of a place. She had only been here twice before, and yet it was a room she recognized more than any other in her life… the tomb.

[Scene Music]

It was cold. She could see her own breath, and hugging herself provided only the smallest comfort of warmth. Quickly, she ran to the door and removed the crossbar.

Outside was a winter blizzard--she could make it back to the mansion if she ran. But as soon as she stepped foot outside--the tomb enveloped itself around her once again, committed to being her coffin.

The crossbar was in place.

Her eyes widened, stepping away from the door in fear. She looked around, trying to see if there was another way out. And as if the tomb itself could read her thoughts, she saw more red words.

The only exit is the door with the crossbar.

This was Hell. There was an escape generously provided, and yet it was impossible to utilize. Not unless she could leave the crossbar in place behind her.

She would be here… until her second death...

It had been an hour since the trial… or was it a month? Or a minute? Maybe an eternity? Gideon had left for a while, now coming back to the group.

“Well then, I assume you guys still have questions about my story. You’re all trapped here the rest of your existences, so whether you like it or not this is all you have available to kill time.”

Everybody groaned. Drinking bland tea was more palpable at this point.

“Ah come on! We still don’t even know who killed Julia or Harley--that’ll be figured out soon, but if you want me to answer anything you have, with or without blue, I think we can make real progress! If you look at the book, you can notice that the story is advancing before our eyes too!”

"Alright then, answer me this. What do you really want?" Verrier asked. "We played along, and all we got for it was one of the more innocent among us being... I'm not sure, sent to Hell was it? It's discouraging, to put it mildly."

"It's all about storytelling--those deserving getting their comeuppance, and a true tragedy coming to fruition. Once you know the 'why', you will realize that the tragedy of today was unavoidable."

He sighed and stretched. "Anyway, what better way to reveal the 'who' than with another debate? The one behind the trick with the dining room door at the beginning of Chapter 2 killed two people. Participate in this battle of truths or not, that's your choice."

"The prankster behind the dining room door is also the one who recommended Harley and Julia pull their absurd pranks. Why am I not surprised," Verrier commented dryly. "I can't imagine what their aim was though."

Harley remains silent after it was revealed that Ingrid got the 'impossible crime' wrong and she fell to God-knows-where. And then Gideon brings up a new debate about the culprit behind the dining room door incident.

"Alright, the way you implied this means that we're dealing with several different killers... We know that Juna killed Mia and no one else, so we can rules her out. Father can be ruled out as per the red truth about him not killing anyone during the story..." Harley said as he mulls over the information.

"At the time that the dining room door was opened, the dining room key was in the servants' quarters. If that is true, say it in red."

"Juna likely killed Raphael's friend, too," Verrier reminded Harley.

"I must ask, as I wasn't there: can everyone who was meant to be at the guest house around the time the dining room door was unlocked account for each other?"
