"Actually, I have a question for one of our witnesses." Light continues, posting a second time.

"Charlie, did Carcharo enter the building as the two of you planned? You let him in, yes? What was the state of the man?"

"Oh, er, sure, I let him in. I kind of regret it now, given what happened."
"He was himself at the time. Confident, ready to get some of the money that girl owes us."
"Still owes us, I'll point out."

"So that means he got the injury on his ankle after he arrived at the venue... which means he was probably electrocuted... which means it's completely possible for Exie to have shoved him into the cable, correct?"

"Perhaps after meeting the shark in her private dressing room, instead of her sister, who she expected to meet, Exie, who had discovered the way her fellow idol died, acted quickly and murdered the man in the same way."

"Perhaps, during her little break, after her accident, she thought to water her poor, neglected vase of flowers. And when she realized what she had done to the man, she masked her crime by pouring the fresh water down the man's throat."

"If Exie figured out how her friend died, piecing together what happened after discovering the damaged floorboards in her own time, managed to kill Carcharo the same way, she could've disguised the crime using freshly watered flowers, 'Drowning' the man in her dressing room. Which would make it possible for Exie to have committed this crime during the blackout."

"Exie was to meet Endea at 21:15, why would she assume her sister would already be there earlier? The timeline of events is getting all screwed up, and I'm getting confused."

"Shoving a man onto a wire and electrocuting him is murder. A man who somehow drowned on the floor of her dressing room could at least suggest someone else was the culprit."

Light groans. "That doesn't matter, about Endea anyways. My point was she found a hostile loan shark in her dressing room when nobody else should've been able to enter. Naturally, she freaked out."

"Regardless, upon further examination of the situation, it seems like Carcharo was really electrocuted, which could have only happened in that dressing room. As we've discussed previously, it makes little sense for Kat to be the killer. In order for Carcharo to have drowned before the blackout, someone would have to spot him backstage, hold his 'ead under the sink, then toss his body into Exie's dressing room and shock the poor bastard's leg."

"It seems much more likely that those two events happened in reverse order. Him being electrocuted first, and then 'drowned' so to speak. And I believe Exie could've done this, while I struggle to see how anyone else could've drowned him first, then shocked the poor fuck's leg. Especially considering nobody would've thought that Exie's room was unlocked."

"WAIT, isn't it exactly the electrocution that causes the blackouts to happen?? That would mean Exie was on stage during this encounter!! No way this could've happened, right?" GUNS stated, starting to get a headache.

"Circuit breaker switches automatically switch off when the power trips, and the one in our case can only be shut off manually by a senior technician."

"It doesn't mean Exie was the one who switched it off either, though. I never said she did in the first place." Light said to GUNS.

Then looking at Maria he grunted. "Hmph. Maybe the poor bastard shocked himself mostly to death in Exie's dressing room, and when she came to check on her things, she found the man and finished the job. Pouring fresh water from her starving flowers down his mouth as he breathed his last."

Light wiped his forehead. He was stressed out but still spoke calmly. I think he's grasping at straws here.

Edgar was dramatically splayed over the prosecution's desk, face covered in coffee and sweat. No one could remember when he did that.

"... Writing is actually a lot harder without my editor to tell me what's good and what's shit that needs to be cut." he mused. "Now I'm starting to feel really bad I saved her in my contacts as Bloodsucker Alpha..."

"DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION TO THE HOURGLASS."
"THE RESULTS WERE, INDEED, VERY INTERESTING."

Spoiler: The Truth Part 1
The 'footage' from the real world started at a point where Promethea had just suggested Don was, in reality, electrocuted, just like Lucy had been.

Image
"He had a wound on his ankle!"
"The killer probably gauged at it with a knife afterwards to hide the fact that it was a burn."
"Then they covered it with a plaster to make it look like he'd gotten the wound sometime beforehand!"

Image
"Krh! Preposterous!"
"How do you explain the water in his lungs, then?"

Image
"It's... yes, I can answer that easily!"
"The vase! I thought it was weird how there was no water in it."
"The killer wanted to hide the true cause of death, so they filled his lungs with water!"
"They probably hoped to confuse us, by making some kind of 'impossible' crime!"

Image
"..."
"...Heh."

Image
"!"
"What's so funny?"

Image
"So then, in this wild fantasy ride of yours, who's the killer?"

Image
"Well... I suppose it would have to be Kat."
"She's the one who knew about the cable hidden behind the board."
"The electrocution caused a blackout, like she expected, and she used that to reach the dressing room unseen and tamper with the scene."
"Endea's arrival caught her by surprise, so she slipped out, then re-entered the room 'for the first time'."

:objection:

[Kerberos objection theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBTqAsYC7NI]

Image
"Is this really the best you can offer me, Plebethea?"
"Your theory is preposterous, and overlooks a far more obvious possibility!"
"Kat wouldn't risk everything to kill a man she'd never met."
"Really, you were clutching at straws with that one."

"Just think, girl!"
"The exposed cable was left lying in the room, waiting to electrocute the first person to walk in."
"Or are you telling me someone was inside at the time, and physically jabbed the cable into him?"
"We already know every suspect was accounted for before the blackout!"

Image
"Oi, what about Char-"

:objection:

Image
"The man had no motive!"
"And let's not forget, he was the one to let Don into the building in the first place!"
"He couldn't have lied in wait for him, nor is it likely he followed after and tried to attack him that way."
"No, the cable was a trap."
"Need I explain the basics to you? Traps are premediated."
"You lay a trap because you intend to kill someone with it."

"No-one knew Don would be there."
"Don... wasn't even the original target!"
"He was merely unlucky enough to spring a trap intended for someone else."
"And that someone, that target, was, of course..."

Spoiler: The Truth Part 2
"Endea."

Image
"Me? You mean to tell me I was so close to death that day?"

Image
"It's a simple matter. If the target was not Don, naturally the true target was someone who was expected to be in the dressing room."

:objection:

Image
"Like Exie herself! She was the origina-"

:objection:

Image
"If the killer wanted to kill Exie in this way, they would need to be able to unlock her door."
"No-one other than Endea knew the door would be unlocked, and Endea had no opportunity to set such a trap before Don arrived."
"Endea, meanwhile, was invited there! Invited to the location of a trap!"
"It's as I've said from the very beginning: the killer was Exie Thurman!"

Image
"But that's... really flippin' stupid!"
"I'll throw your own argument right back at you: Exie had no motive to kill her sister!"

Image
"Krh! You would use my own words against me?"
"..."
"No, but wait..."

:takethat:

Image
"What's this?"
"Exie's... debt contract?"

Image
"Exie had ample motive to kill Endea."
"In fact, I would go as far to say she had an even stronger motive to kill Endea than she did Don!"
"It's strange, is it not, that she had her mole removed so recently?"
"In doing so, she became the splitting image of her sister!"
"She planned to kill Endea and then take her place!"
"She would live on as 'Endea', and 'Exie' would have died, nullifying the debt contract."

Image
"No!"

Image
"You are too dim-witted to yet see it, Plebethea, but this explains another piece of evidence at the scene."
"Something strange and out-of-place, that has tormented the both of us this whole time."

:takethat:

Image
"I am, of course, talking about the metal pipe!"
"Exie planned to smash her dead sister's face with it, obscuring her identity."
"Few knew about her mole operation. By sufficiently damaging Endea's face, no-one would be able to tell she'd been moleless."
"The world would believe that Exie was the one to die there."

"I tread into conjecture here, but I assume Exie planned this murder while taking Endea's smart watch into account."
"If Endea was electrocuted at 21:15 as planned, her watch would record her time of death."
"Exie would have a perfect alibi, up on stage, watched by hundreds."
"The electrocution would cause a blackout. This would be Exie's chance."
"She'd head backstage, damage Endea's body and then return to the stage again."
"Our poor coroners would take one look at the scene and conclude Endea was beaten to death."
"Naturally one has to be physically there to do so, meaning anyone with an alibi for 21:15 would appear to be innocent."

"And, to complete this tragic tale, I return to that most dreaded of theories: twins switching places."
"Yes, the very same theory I mistakenly proposed earlier!"
"Exie would need to claim she had been Endea all along, of course."
"I imagine she would make up some story about being asked by her sister to take her place for a day."
"This is why Exie began acting unusually during her performance. She hoped to sell the idea that she was really 'Endea' in disguise!"

"Of course, Exie's plan was ruined the moment Don fell for the trap instead."
"Forced to improvise, she used the vase to try and make it look like he'd drowned."
"Face it, Plebethea! Exie is the only person on this entire planet who benefits from a murder such as this!"

Spoiler: The Verdict
There was some back-and-forth after this, but Promethea could do nothing to overturn the prosecution's theory. Eventually she was interrupted by the dreaded sound of the judge's gavel.

Image
"I've heard enough."
"I see no reason to prolong this trial any longer."
"The truth is readily apparent to us all now, I do think."
"I declare the defendant, Exie Thurman..."

:guilty:

Image
"AND THERE YOU HAVE IT."

"Whoops!" Pat gave a laugh, scratching his head with an expression on his face that resembled both sheepishness and great amusement. "Turns out our theory didn't fully match up with the truth, huh? Well, I s'pose what really matters is that we were able to argue for Exie's innocence in the end, right? Good trial, fellas!" He gave a hearty laugh. "Thank goodness ol' Charlie wasn't the culprit! Dunno what I'd have done otherwise. Here's hopin' the prosecution will do a better job next time, right?"

His words to the prosecution seemed to contain no malice. It was if he was sincerely wishing them a good game after all had been said and done. With that being said, he was unusually unfazed by Exie being the true killer in the end. Did their victory really matter so much for him that he was able to overlook it?

Coarse cheers emerged from the void as Akari (who definitely helped the defense team and said lots of useful things) leapt up and down, pumping her fists in delight.

“Yes, lovely lovely lovely! Good job, everyone! Just one more victory and I can rip the bastard who did this to me limb from limb!”

Akari froze, seemingly in mid-air, and sheepishly dropped her arms to her sides.

“Err…sorry, I shouldn’t say stuff like that, huh. I meant I’ll…report that scoundrel to the police. Yeah.”

She calmed down and leaned over the desk, carving smiley faces into the wood with her nails.

“Guess we were way off base though, huh. Color me surprised. That idol really was a cunning girl. Hopefully next time I won’t be on the side fighting against justice.”

Case 2: Turnabout When They Cry

Prologue

Location: De Silva Manor
Time: 8:00

There was a small party being held at the remote De Silva Manor. A chance for the De Silva family and some family friends to meet and catch up on things. The manor was sequestered away atop a mountain, and so it was a multiple-day affair, with guests staying a few nights. There were worries they might have to stay longer though, as the area was currently being wracked by powerful, hurricane-force winds.

That wasn't the most worrying thing right now, though.

The most worrying thing was the murdered man currently sprawled in the library.

[Murdered man: https://i.imgur.com/JTbh6HL.png]

He had been discovered by the housekeeper making her morning rounds, after the guests had all peacefully slept through the first night. She'd alerted everyone to the discovery, and they were now all gathered around, all talking over one-another.

Image
"Alright, enough!"
"We disrespect the dead with our clamouring!"
"Please, let the man have his peace."

The elderly gentleman silencing the others was the head of the household, John De Silva. After taking his mobile out of his jacket pocket, he dropped the jacket over the victim's face. The pockets clinked as they hit the wooden floor, somewhat ruining the effect.

Image
"We must give him what little modesty we may."
"Now then, I cannot remain standing here."

All of a sudden, John stormed off to one end of the room, heading out the door. The others nervously followed after him, wondering what he was planning; no-one wanted to linger in the library. John headed down the guest rooms corridor, opened one of the doors and promptly locked himself inside. Everyone heard the door locking firmly, and it wouldn't budge when the housekeeper gave it a cursory tug.

Image
"I will not wait around to be killed!"
"One among you out there is the killer, and there's no telling who you'll kill next!"
"Well I'll tell you what, it won't be me! I shall remain safely inside here until the storm passes."
"Begone with you! Go attend your affairs."
"Though if you've any sense, you'll take precautions just like I!"

The assembled crowd were a little nonplussed, but they were all still feeling the shock of finding a man dead and so thought it was reasonable behaviour. Maybe he'd calm down later. For now, they all headed back to the library, through which was the only way to reach the rest of the mansion.

Back at the library, one of the family guests, Rori Porter, took the jacket off the victim's face and folded it up.

Image
"It pains me to say it, but this is a crime scene now."
"We'd better preserve the scene just as we found it, right?"

They hung the jacket over a nearby chair instead, reasonably far from the body.

Image
"Quite right!"
"If this is a crime scene, then I'll guard it until the police arrive!"

Image
"An excellent idea!"
"I will join you, and keep an ear out for any strange movements."

Image
"R-right, we probably should do that."
"I'll, um, stay here too. The more there are, the less chance for any trickery."

Image
"Then I, too, shall keep watch."
"There shall be no wrongdoing under my watchful gaze."

The others agreed that this was a good idea. The remaining group split themselves up further, with some going to contact the police, some checking the means of transportation and the others remaining together. It was as John had said: one of them was a killer. They shouldn't take any chances.

Free Time, Part 1

Location: The De Silva Manor
Time: 8:20

It was only now that the people of the manor seemed to become aware of the After•Life participants. It was a limbo period, before anyone separated off to contact the police or similar.

Image
"I'm sorry you all had to see this."
"Not much of a party, I know."
"I'm the housekeeper, Betty Keyesbergh."
"I found the body. If you have any questions, ask away."

Image
"But be warned, you may not like the answers!"
"This might be an unsolvable crime, and then where would you be?"

Image
"Oh, don't be silly, Philip."
"Ignore him, he's just a butler."
"It's truly a pleasure to meet all of you!"
"My name is Loreley De Silva. Heiress to the De Silva name and fortune."

Image
"And that just leaves me. The others are occupied elsewhere, so I suppose we'd better give you all the tour."
"Nice to meet you! Name's Rori. They/them, if you please."

Image
"Hmph. Don't ask, don't tell, a policy to live by in my book."

Image
"Aw Betty, you love me really!"

Image
"Eh, you're a good kid, Rori. Honest, hardworking. A darn sight better than that Margaret.”

Image
"It’s LORELEY, you old hag!"

Image
"I know birth names can be a hindrance sometimes, but really now, what sort of name is that?"

Image
"It’s a beautiful name, for a beautiful person! I suppose you wouldn’t understand."

Image
"Now, now, you two, we need to show these visitors around."
"As I was saying, hi, it’s a pleasure."
"I’m an investigative journalist, so I’m sure I’ve got some interesting stories I could tell."
"Let's walk while we talk."

The housekeeper, Betty, was a slightly chubby woman with a stern expression. She gave the impression she could manage the entire manor singlehandedly if she wanted to, which was probably why the De Silvas only had one other servant.

Said other servant was ostensibly a butler, but for some reason he was dressed in a lab coat. He had quite a dangerous feel to him, and it was difficult to tell what he was thinking behind his faint smile.

The one calling herself 'Loreley' had, admittedly, chosen a fitting name for herself. Her smile when introducing herself had been captivating, but when Betty had gotten her name wrong it was like a demon had possessed her for a brief moment. Now she looked and acted like nothing had happened.

The journalist, Rori, projected a very calm, relaxing aura that helped balance out the other three. They had moderately androgynous features, and eyes that were always ready to light up for a quick joke. Even when faced with a murder, they did their best not to get too caught up in it all.

"Who uh... Who was the victim?" Light gently tugged on his hood, a little nervous being in such rich company. Seemed a little out of character for him.

"If you don't mind talking about it, at least. There's no way this is 'unsolvable' though. Everything has to start somewhere..."

Everyone began to walk, following Betty's lead as she took charge of the tour.

They had been in the lobby, but now headed through to the living room, where the stairs to the next floor were.

Image
"He was Deid Purson. A politician."

Image
"We're not actually quite sure why he was here."
"No-one seemed to know him!"

Image
"He had a valid invite though."
"It wasn't a forgery or anything like that."
"I took it from him and performed extensive tests to prove it!"

Image
"Some of those tests seemed a little unnecessary, though!"
"Did you really need to examine it under an electron microscope?"

Image
"Th-the pursuit of science is just... like that, sometimes!"

Image
"He was an unexpected arrival, all the same."
"We didn't have room for him upstairs, so he slept in one of the otherwise-unused guest rooms."

"Quite modern people for such a classic setting. And quite a lot of you, too. Maybe we should expect another murder soon to trim the cast..." Edgar said openly, like that was supposed to sound normal. "And you say no one knew the victim? But he was a politician, so that earns him enemies by default. This will be tricky without more deaths to investigate..."

"Oh, you sound just like my father."
"I'm sure someone just had a grudge against politicians is all."
"The police will arrive, the killer will be arrested and all will be well."
"We're all lovely people here otherwise, no-one's going to kill anyone else."
"Except perhaps Philip killing himself with one of his silly experiments."

Image
"Hmph! Spoken like a true ignoramus!"
"There's no science without risk!"
"One day you'll see the results of my experiments, and then you'll be sorry!"

Akari drifted through the hallways, seeming to fit right in as some ghostly figure passed around through urban legend.

"And that man who rushed off into his room," Akari said. "The head of the household, I suppose? What's his deal? He usually so...cowardly? No offense, of course."

"He is a great man, thank you very much!"

Betty snapped this at Akari unexpectedly.

Image
"He didn't fight in 3 different wars just to be called a coward by..."
"Well, someone with... no head."

Image
"Yeah, yeah, he's a disgraced army lieutenant, we all know the story."
"These days he's just a paranoid shut-in."

Image
"How dare you!"

Image
"He's my dad, I can say what I want about him!"
"You're just a servant, you have no right to stop me."

The group had now ascended the stairs and arrived at the second floor, where all the bedrooms were. The dead were shown the recreation room, where they could spend some time if they wanted.
