First, register for classes early. The easy, non-brain-killing ones fill up almost immediately, and unless you're a genius or like a chalkenge, I don't think you'd like a schedule full of super-hard classes and nothing else.
Second, if you can, schedule your classes so you have at least one whole day free. Most people go for a thee-day weekend schedule, though I personally found having Wednesday free was just as helpful. This is important because not only will it give you a class-free day to do extra things, it keeps your schedule from having days with just a single class on it, which many find annoying.
And third, if you have a question or a problem, talk with your professor. I know it's not always easy to do, but sometimes things can be hard to understand; a fear of looking dumb or other insecurities seem to be a problem many people have, and sometimes it can be costly.
Sorry if I sounded bossy or scared you, but that's pretty much what I was told when I first started college two years ago, so I thought it might be helpful to you. College can be fun, though, especially if your campus has clubs or a student lounge or something.

Oh yeah, I heartily agree with this one. One thing you gotta keep in mind is This Isn't High School Anymore. The professors are there to help. You could even sit down and have coffee (
) with them and talk stuff over, if you need to.

Trying something new, and especially being in a new and unfamiliar place is always something daunting to behold. These feelings and emotions running through you, right now? - Don't sweat it. They're nothing unusual, and I'm sure we can all appreciate how you feel, right now!
I'm not going to lie, but, you'll probably be running high on the whole emotional level for the next few weeks, and that's all well and good. Just try and get to grips with things, and more importantly, take a bit of time for yourself to chill out. Find your little relaxation zone and hit it for all it's worth.
This is a new step, in your life, and as time passes things will get much easier. I'm confident that as soon as you've settled yourself in and got your head sorted out, everything'll be sweet for you.
Just remember to try and keep your cool. You don't want to stress out too much, and I know, this must be hard to do alone. You wouldn't have asked for advice, otherwise!
Sounds to me like you aren't freaking out, but rather, must be very excited right now. Everything running about in your head has became too much to deal with, but, like I said. Relax. You'll grow to love it all, eventually. I'm sure that besides yourself, there's a lot of other students that are going through the same thing.
You aren't alone in this, Zetto-San.
And, hey. If you ever need anyone to chat to if you're finding it hard, don't be a stranger. I've been in situations like you have, before. I travel a lot, and I've been in some pretty mad digs, myself. As we probably all have, at some point in our lives.
You'll be fine, dude. Give it time, and more importantly, try taking a nice long nap, sometime soon.

One thing you should be look out for...some professors can be very biased, since many of them are far....FAR-Left (or-Right)! So, be very careful, because they can bend or stretch the truth.
Other than that, you should be alright. :)

Also, another tip: ask about professors from other students who have already taken their classes, so you'll know what they're like, how they run the classroom, etc. I make sure to do this before registering so I'll know what to expect. Good luck!

If you aren't sure of something, ask. I find that it never hurts to ask, and if somebody doesn't know, ask someone else. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Trust me, this has helped me a whole lot, such as finding out information about classes, registration, locations, etc.
Sit near the front in class. It helps your professors to recognize you and it will help you to pay better attention in class. It will also help your professor to get to know who you are, which should help make you a bit more comfortable in class.
Start checking for information about next semester's classes at least a month before registration. It helps you to be better prepared for registration and can help you have a better chance at picking your own time for advisement when that time arrives.
Don't stress about it too much. I was pretty nervous my first day of college too, but you should adapt quickly. Its not so scary once you get used to the campus. I wish you luck in college and hope you do very well!

Also, please remember that the one responsible for your work, your grades, and what benefit you get from your classes is YOU. If you can be that self-sufficient in taking care of your own studies, you'll do fine.
College is a great time to shape up or ship out; don't be like the 30% or so of freshman and do the latter. You've made the choice to go, so live up to it and do what you can to define yourself.
Oh also, I suggest making a pre-class walk between all of your classes. It will save you the awkward 'Freshman Shuffle' in which you wander into your classroom five minutes late sheepishly.

Anyway, I'm leaving in less then 30 hours now. Classes, money, roommate, everything beyond doing my laundry is finished. I've read an advice book called The Naked Roommate twice now.
Right now I'm experiencing the dread of going. And the fct I think about things way too far in advence, so me thinking about all the things I need to do at once isn't helping. It's my own curse, really.

Most of the advice here is pretty sound, but there is one thing that I can NOT emphasize enough:
RateMyProfessors.com
Is it foolproof? No. But does it help? Immensely. Some of the students (ok, a good number of them) can be very biased either way, and you have to take their reviews with a grain of salt, but if you're not crunched for a class at a specific time, and the determining factor is the quality of the professor, checking this site is almost mandatory. It's a great resource for when you don't know anyone who's previously taken the class.
Also, for goodness' sake visit your major advisor once in a while. They'll help you get the classes you need, and some of them can even steer you away from the less-than-stellar courses.

Wow I'm glad I went to University in the UK.
I managed to discover beer, sex, and how to manage money and live independently as well as gain a degree and leave with the joy of reading history and an appreciation of Wordsworth.
I think it's very different over here though.

Go with an open mind, be willing to learn, to debate and discuss with people of all different backgrounds and beliefs. Respect the views of others, but never lose sight of your own. Have confidence in yourself, but never lack the willingness to learn from others. You *are* as good as everyone else, even if some people make you feel inadequate. You *will* find friends, even if you have to look in unexpected places. Also, if you love the subject you're studying, luxuriate in having the time to learn with no major life distractions weighing you down.
I made an early error at college of having an entirely romantic and unrealistic view of what it would be like - blame too much reading, Evelyn Waugh's "low door in the wall" and a small town upbringing. But I went on to have a mind-expanding, indpendence-increasing joruney of self-discovery that I would never have experienced at home.
Have fun. And if you can't be good, be careful.
Edited To Add Sorry I just realized that the Evelyn Waugh thing probably won't make any sense to non-Eng Lit scholars or Brideshead fans. The quote is:
"I went full of curiosity and the faint, unrecognized apprehension that here, at last, I should find that low door in the wall, which others, I knew, had found before me, which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden, which was somewhere, not overlooked by any window, in the heart of that grey city." This was NOT the ideal way to approach college. (No shit! Disappointment loomed! I was such a naive kid, but you know I'm old, and that was in the days before the Internet).

Anyhow, there is a fall play soon, and there is an opening for a reviewer in the school newspaper, and I could totally do both.
