Though, GS3 kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, so I'm glad they decided to switch Phoenix out. As much as I love him, you can only play as a character so long before there's not much left for them to do.
Besides, it'll let Phoenix do things he couldn't as the Attorney--like be a hobo.

It's even better having Phoenix appear in the game to link the two arcs together. (Same goes for Ema Skye, I was glad to see she was in it). I just hope any other cameos could be in the 2nd or third Odoroki game, that way people wouldn't moan so much. :F

Besides, as lovably dorky as that goody-two-shoes was, I have a feeling I'll like Odoroki much more. Phoenix was a rather "all-around-good-guy" type of person, the kind that's just so in the balance, that they're pretty neutral and thus easy to play as (uhm, if you get what I mean). Odoroki seems like he'll be leaning much, much more towards the side that thinks of justice as "black-and-white-no-grey", or probably will start the game as such.

was far too competent to be very interesting to play as. I think that being pulled from the player's control will actually help Phoenix. I feel an analogy would be appropriate at this time. Phoenix will become the Simon Belmont of the Ace Attorney series. Simon was the star of the first handful of Castlevania games, and it has been a long time since we've seen a game starring Simon, but he's always thought of as the greatest Vampire Hunter ever. Likewise, Phoenix will will probably not get another game any time soon (if ever), but he will be remembered as the greatest Ace Attorney.That being said, I'm not a huge fan of how the transition was made, and my initial impression of
is... less than great (world's lamest deskslam), but I'll reserve judgment until I've played it (assuming that Capcom brings it stateside, of course). I'm also not a fan of the change from to . Besides, it could lead to what happened in MGS2.
Since you wern't playing as Solid Snake, but he helped you, he became EVEN cooler.
Solid Snake kinda looked like a bum himself in MGS2 :P
But I hope the new guy won't take a Raiden and be hated and joked about.

If Phoenix had come back as Odoroki's mentor, chances are he wouldn't have changed at all. It would be same old Phoenix in the blue suit giving you tips. But half of Phoenix's personality is internalized--other than appearance, the most he has going for him is his internal monologue, which as a mentor we wouldn't see.
He would end up just like Mia (considering young Mia acted a lot like first-case Phoenix, I don't see how the comparison could be avoided). Everyone would be glad to see him, but he could only interact with Odoroki so much without solving all the cases himself, which would defeat the purpose of Odoroki existing at all. If he didn't interact with Odoroki, it would defeat the purpose of him being there.
But now we have Phoenix in a new role, one where his expertise as a lawyer won't necessarily interfere because he doesn't seem to have any invested interest in helping Odoroki anyway (despite it being HIM on trial). Instead of idly wondering what Phoenix has been up to the past 7 years everyone sees him and responds with OMG WTF!? It's a huge leap and a great chance to see the development of Phoenix's character. People don't live static lives, after all. It wouldn't be interesting if all we got out of a GS4 Phoenix was, "And then he was an awesome lawyer for 7 years, doing the same thing he's always done."
Besides, I seriously doubt Phoenix is just going to go back to the restaurant after ths first case is over. I'm hoping for some "reveal" where his hair busts out of the hat and he pulls himself together by the end of the game.

I see three possibilities. Either Phoenix is searching for someone to pass along his skills to and is testing Odoroki to see if he is talented enough (which he will be, otherwise it becomes a moot point). The second possibility is that he already thinks that Odoroki is worthy and is giving him a push into the real world. The third is that Odoroki reminds Phoenix of his younger self, and hopes that seeing Odoroki in action will inspire him to take up the badge again.
I think that the first possibility is most likely, or a combination of the first and second. The third seems unlikely, as that would put more focus on Phoenix than Odoroki. If that's the case, then seeing Phoenix as the prosecutor for the last case, as CantFaketheFunk suggested, would make a lot of sense. I admit, it seems unlikely, but it would be very cool, as Phoenix's last test for Odoroki. It would be kind of like in JFA when Phoenix has to break Mia's psyche lock, but more dramatic.

That's probably why they revealed Phoenix ahead of the game, to make you start thinking about it, get riled up so that you'll want to play it and find out what happened to him.
I'll tell you, though, having Phoenix just remain as a lawyer and not hear about him again would've been a far worse idea, mainly because knowing that we'd probably never cross paths with him would upset fans of the original trilogy. And even then, the guy was practically written into a corner by the end of GS3, so he'd just be this perfect, nearly-undefeated lawyer that would never need to interact with you. Starting fresh with new blood in the courtroom was probably their best decision yet.

It gets stale sometimes playing the same character over and over again. The fact that it's still in California is because some people get uppity if they don't see an old character(fuh-get the ref).
I could to add respect to Phoenix, he seems more impressive if you're not playing as him. Kojima did it with Metal Gear Solid 2, why can't someone do it with this?
Why did Phoenix quit as an attorney?? Because it's INTERESTING. A mystery will make you curios and make you want to play on or buy the game.

My thought exactly. I've come to accept Phoenix's position in GS4, but that doesn't mean I'm particularly happy about it. I realize this is pointless at this point, but I would have preferred to see Phoenix as Odoroki's mentor. This ties the continuities together well but makes it clear that Phoenix is "passing the torch" to Odoroki, as it were.
That's not to say that Phoenix wouldn't have a backstory beyond his own trilogy. He would be different than he was in those games. Very different. Bitter, untrusting, and vindictive, perhaps even suggesting that "Defense attorneys should never really trust their clients," and we have to wonder what made him like this. Sure, this doesn't have the same shock value as the Hobohodo angle, but I think that given the nature of the games, the subtler idea holds more intrigue. We first think "Yay! Phoenix is back!" and we get lulled into a false sense of security so the blow will hit that much harder when we realize "WTF?! This isn't the Phoenix we know!"
Not that any of this matters, just my oppinion...

interesting theory.. My friend had 'just' about the same theory as you, except that her reasoning is,"Garyuu looks like cliche anime character..that backstabs people or threatens others with a smile..".And her 'latest' reference, being the ouran high school host club. How interesting..
But anyway, I think they change the main character because it is the first real development of Ace Attorney series on NDS platform..(while all the others are just ports with added changes..)
And from a different angle, it's easier to plot the story..

Well I think that JFA-4 and GS3-5 have alot to do with Pheonix's statement. Somehow I doubt everything will be revealed in the first case in GS4, and we're just going to have to wait to see what happened. Let's just hope that Capcom doesn't leave it open, like they with Megaman .

Actually, I wouldn't mind some low-key references to the first three games, in much the same way that case 1-5 had a bunch of subtle references to the next 2 games that you would only notice after playing them (like the picture of Maggey in Gumshoe's locker, for instance, or the references to the Gatewater Hotel opening up another branch).
Anyway, a new cast is what the developers want to work on, so it should freshen things up, but it'll probably be hard for me to develop the same sort of attachment that I already have for Phoenix and company. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess!

Um, one small thing that bugs me. Maybe Pearl, who was 8 in GS3, is now 15, 7 years later. Meaning that maybe,just maybe pearly is magic-girl. Which would help for dramatic effect when Hobohudo/Phoenix meets her.

WRONG! Pearl is 9 in GS3, thus meaning she is 16 in GS4. Besides the kanji in Pearl's and Minuki's names are different.
