Phoenix Engine:

---

About
The Phoenix Engine is going to be a small system to create Phoenix Wright (Gyakuten Saiban) cases. It will be easy to use, using a simple scripting language called SimplerCaseScript. Also, if it's too hard for you to use, you can use a frontend Case Creation program, which is currently also in the making.

If you suddenly upgrade from one version of Phoenix Engine to a new, incompatible version, you can port your code, either by making the case again in an updated Case Creation program, or using a code porting software.

Demos
  • Phoenix Engine: The Phoenix Project 0.1 alpha
This is a really crap demo, it can barely be called a compatibility test. You are shown the Court Overview, and you can change the witness/defendant with a press of a button, and inputting a number.

---

To-do list
For version 0.2, I'm planning on...
  • Adding more character IDs.
  • Adding more character ID compatibility. For example, being able to use, say, Will Powers as a defence attorney.
  • Courtroom panning.
  • Reading from TXT case files.
  • Awesome new loading screen.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the limitations of both phpBB and InvisionFree's BBCode compatibility, this topic is not seen as it was meant to be. To see it correctly, please visit an SMF forum, such as ZFGConnection. Thanks.

I already mentioned this on the old forum, but... later today, I will post screenshots of the Court Record, Courtroom Panning, etc.

Also, I would like to announce a new feature. I won't do it now, because I'm posting this via the Wii browser, which is on-screen typing hell! ...and I have an itchy nose xD

'Awesome new loading screen'!? Loading screens suck though. They tell the player they're only playing a game. Furthermore, a game like this should have no loading at all. I doubt the Phoenix Write editor or its cases will ever need to load. Well, good luck with your project anyway, but I think it would be odd if we both released our editors at the same time.

Indeed? Are you meaning to say they don't load? Then how does the case get into memory? And get executed? I'm confused O.o

Anyway, sorry I didn't get those screenshots, I started feeling sick, so I went to bed early. I'll swear I'll get them soon, though. I've been working on de-JPEGing some of those GS4 sprites (Garyuu is almost PNG-quality!).

Eh... hey, Shaun, what are you going to be making your Phoenix Write editor in? Will that be MMF as well?

I'm working on finishing mine up a bit, but the GUI kinda sucks.

There's friendly competition then there's needlessly-insinuating-insults-against-the-competitor's-project-to-try-and-make- yours-look-better, Shaun, it's getting tiring; I, personally, can't wait to see your project finished, Naruhodou-san and look forward to being able to compare the two, if I decide to download Phoenix Write as well.

Looking forward to those new screens you promised!

What the hell are you talking about? It's called constructive criticism, and it's also called the truth. It's a known fact that PC games like this one - or mine - should not have a loading screen. By the way, you didn't need to use hyphens there, it looks ugly. I encourage Naruhodou-san to continue his project, actually. I've thought about this, and I've decided that competition is a good thing. If we don't have competition, where's the effort? So we'll both end up making editors that are as good as we can possibly make them.

Naruhodou-san, I never said that there's no loading. However... Phoenix If the cases are 3kb like you stated, what is there to load, really? Oh, wait. I hope you're not talking about that horrible GameMaker splash screen. Sadshoe A reason why I don't like GameMaker. Yes, the editor will be made with MMF, as MMF has everything needed to deal with arrays, etc.

Saying something outright sucks doesn't seem very constructive to me; also I never really believed in people who posed their own opinions as "the truth". Don't try and correct my grammar either, I think I'm competent enough.

This forum isn't the place for a flame war, so I'm not going to induce one; I think I summed it up pretty well when I accused you of "insinuating insults". You have your "opinions", I know I've got mine and I know I don't like seeing people talk to others like that.

Looking forward to your progression, Naruhodou-san! Can't wait to see those new screens...! GS4-character compatibility = awesome! <333 Will Powers

I said loading screens suck, lol. He hasn't even made a loading screen yet, so I haven't really criticised anything. Having a black screen would be best for a loading screen. Simple. I wouldn't have a flame war with you. I don't have 'flame wars'... and if I did, I'd pick somebody who knows the difference between grammar and punctuation. Really, people need to brush up when it comes to writing if they want to make created cases look genuine.

Heh, I think this page sums up loading screens: http://www.games.net/article/netten/2/114801/top-ten-gaming-annoyances/

Regarding GS4 character compatibility... GS4 won't be over in the West for quite some time. The only thing it will do is ruin the plot for people who want to play the Western version when it comes out. People don't even know much about the GS4 characters yet - so what are they going to do with them? That's called constructive criticism, and that's why I'll either add GS4 characters later or put them in a separate downloadable pack.

GS4 may not come out here for a long time, but people can learn a lot about the characaters and want to use them before then. We do have quite a few members who have no trouble spoiling themselves. So I think including GS4 characters is a great idea.

Though the game will be out in about a month's time - at this point, it might be better to wait and see if the sprites can be ripped rather than spend the effort cleaning those flash sprites, Naruhodo-san.

(Oh, and Shaun - play nice Javado )

Hmm. I'm not so sure about that (I mean GS4, not playing nice). What can we learn without having the plot ruined, honestly? Hopefully I'm not spamming the poor guy's thread, though, this is completely relevant discussion.

You've endeared me so much to you, Shaun - I just can't wait to play your engine now! Oh, and thanks for that constructive criticism! <3333 A little ironic you couldn't take my constructive criticism (in your loose definition of the term) though, isn't it? Oh, and, in case you didn't realise, that was sarcasm in the first sentence. ;)

I agree with what you said, Croik (on the issue of GS4 characters) - perhaps it would be best to wait for the game to come out. At the same time though, where I'm at, I'd be interested in being able to use only the "core" characters we've seen so far - such as Odoroki, the Garyuus, Ema - that way I won't really consider the game to have been "spoiled".

Perhaps I'm going back on myself here (xP) but are you going to be taking advantage of extra "add-on" download packs for things such as GS4-characters, Naruhodou-san? I know other people have talked about this and it seems like a really good idea; that way, people who want to get the GS4 characters can get them and those who don't aren't obliged to.

You're exactly right. I do want to have a go at making my own cases, just not on your editor. Like you inferred though, that's nothing to be worried about; to be honest, I was put off it as soon as I saw the trailer video bragging about it in comparison to Naruhodou-san's but I'm sure there are loads of other people still willing to use it, so what's the problem?

*is a proud emo* ;)

Not the only accusation... Right now, for your information, I support Naruhodou's work. I think he's trying hard. I like that. I only threw that little punch at him in my video because he implied that he didn't see my work as a challenge.

My little 'battle' against him is over now. I have nothing against him. However, he did say he wouldn't be able to produce anything for a few more months so, Naruhodou-san, if you are having any trouble, feel free to PM me. You're no doubt going to be working with arrays, which can get difficult, so the offer's there.

Now that I have explained what happened between me and him, I hoping that we can end this 'war', Ryuuichi. And, if you refuse, who is going to appear to be the argumentative one? Hmph.

Now, let's fulfil Miss Croik's wishes and 'play nice', shall we?

Yes, I think that would be best. And, just for the record, I don't really think there are "sides" here. There are two engines, but they'll probably end up pretty different, and I see no reason to pick a "side".

Anyway... yes, an extension adding in GS4 characters would be a good idea... I'll try and add something like that later today.

Actually, it's GameMaker 6.1 Registered. Legally registered. I was going to upgrade to GameMaker 7 Pro a couple of days ago, but my desktop computer has no internet connection, and GM7 needs an internet connection so it can compare my serial number to an online illegal key blacklist Nick.

I'm glad we're officially neutral with each other now then. About the GameMaker situation - can you not explain it to the creator, Mark Overmars (that's his name, isn't it)? Although I'm wondering, are there going to be any distinct benefits when you upgrade to the new version?

Edit: Hmm, why remove the post? I know it was a double post, but...

Nevermind, because I merged it with the above post. I dislike double posting, it's against the rules at every other forum I visit. Damn them, the members of my forum, why do they constantly break the rules I set upon them >____<?! And it gets completely out of control when they post OoT roms... and why would you even want to post a rom?! They keep asking, but why would somebody really, really, want to post a dumb rom?! Maybe they injected some kind of virus, to try and scare people away from my forum - it wouldn't be the first time >___<

...

Anyway, yeah, I think if I contact YoYo Games about the GameMaker 7 issue, we can work something out. Offline registration is meant to be coming out soon, via phone.

Benefits of GM7? There are new room transitions, but I don't really need to use those...
um. Vista support. GM6 and below don't work with Vista.

Edit: That was a reply to Naruhodou-san, though I'm glad things are sorted.

Really? Ouch. I'm pretty sure games compiled with MMF2 work when you use Vista. Most people still use XP though, but I guess it would be best to play it safe and upgrade. I don't even have an Internet connection at home so I have no idea how I'd do it.

And, to reply to a previous comment and a recent online argument in general.

Goodness.
I guess the saying "Boys will be boys" truly showed itself here.
Now I don't know the first bloody thing about making games, or engines, or whatever...So. Kudos to both of you first of all.
Secondly, GS4 characters would be interesting to put in, especially with the beauty of being able to manipulate them past what we already know; to cultivate them in a sense.

Either way, I look forward to both projects.

Looks cool. I'm not sure how usefull this one will be, though, in the length. I know gamemaker quite well, and it is unsuitable for Phoenix Wright. You can't pre-code anything for easy access, and making the text is going to be so hard that I started off with it to see if it was possible. I saw that it wasn't. So I stopped trying imidietly.

Important notice:

All the screenshots and downloads relating to this project have gone offline. I'm sorry for this, but it had to happen, because ZFGConnection, the forum I administrate, is going to have to move server, and so I'm moving it to my site. Which means I have to free up some disk space.

The least important stuff on my site was... the Phoenix Wright stuff Ack!

Sorry about that. It'll be back as soon as possible.

Hold it!

Guess what, folks! I'm still working on this! I have just solved my main problem with the engine, and I've just gotten the fonts working. It took a while, but the entire PW font from the Court Records rips page is now used in the text engine. Woo-hay!

Anyway, I'll get some new screenshots sometime this week, and a new demo should come out soon, too. No promises though.

If the demo DOES come out, it will include Courtroom Panning, Courtroom Cutting, Animation Switching, Text Engine, and a few more random features.

Just letting you all know!

Sorry for the double post and bump, well, triple post even. But I got some progress report here... the text engine is almost done! Take a peek...

Have I got anything monstrously wrong? Anything visible, anyway? If not, I'll get to work right away!

May I ask, can you do coloured text? Because from what I've heard, GM can't do it. Also, I'm looking at your progress with interest, same with Shauns ^_^

Eh, well, coloured text CAN be done, but with GameMaker, it's a bit more complex. Well possible, though.

Don't worry :DDD
