The judge cleared his throat. "Before we call in the witness I have something important to say." He turned towards the defence and sighed, he always hated to be the bearer of bad news. "Two months ago a new law was passed. It was made to make conviction rates higher in difficult cases." He paused for effect.

"Anyone with a record like the defendant has doesn't have to have a motive proved against them to be found guilty" The crowd suddenly roared into life, shouting "Guilty" or "Innocent" and hurling abuse at the judge. He banged his gavel and said to the bailiff "Clear the court, we're gonna have a ten minute recess."

"A recess? Most excellent."

Seth looked up to the defendant's chair, and shouted at Hugh over the chaos: "Didit, I want a word!"
He turned around. "Come," he said, beckoning Lydia, and strode out of the courtroom.

Oh boy... I didn't think they would bring that up. This sounds very, very bad.

Looking slightly sheepish, Hugh followed Seth and Lydia into the Defense Lobby.

(Ok Gumshoe, I will. Thats part of the reason I made the recess, to give me time to send it to you ^_^)

The judge walked out of the courtroom, and trudged towards his office. He was feeling pretty blue and he had no idea why. He saw Gumshoe in the coridoor and he was looking sad too.

"Mr. Gumshoe, can I have a word with you please?" Gumshoe stood up quickly. "I'm not angry or anything, I'd just like to talk to you." Gumshoe nodded and walked into the office. He sat down on a chair as the Judge put on the kettle and sat down at his desk. "Now, whats been troubling you?"

She followed Seth with a subtle nod. "y-yes sir!" FINALLY she thought, as she noticed the seriousness in the man's voice she followed him out. She looked at him. "s-sorry i can't help you so much." she held her face in her palms.

Gumshoe followed the Judge, he had never been approached by the Judge unless during court.

"I dunno pal, I just guess I'm not together with things, my pay just keeps getting worse cause of all the mistakes I tend to make, but I think it might have just been the fact that Edgeworth wasn't the prosecutor. It’s a really open shut case; I didn't think the defense would need so much information."

Seth waved Lydia's apology away. "No matter... we'll get to that. I suppose it wouldn't have hurt for you to look up a little on a defence aide's position in a court, but... as I said, no matter."
He looked at her with a more softened expression. "That said... Have you stood in a courtroom before?"

He finally rested his eyes on his client, clearly back to serious-mode. "Now then. Didit. We haven't had the honour of meeting. I am Seth Elune. Let's get straight to the case, since we have but ten minutes. Tell me, how do you respond to this 'mental instability' business?"

She nodded a tad weakly. "it's about my second time in court, just not.. as an aide." she pouted some. "sorry." she smiled nervously.

"I understand your position entirely Mr. Gumshoe. It must be hard not working with one of your most trusted allies but thats what gives you experience." The Judge sighed.
"Um, Pal. You seem a bit down too." Gumshoe replied concernedly. The judge nodded and stood up. He picked up the kettle and made a cup of coffee for Gumshoe and a tea for himself.

"I'm just unsure if I'm actually helping the city. I try my hardest to promote justice in the city, but I make mistakes. And now this controversial law has been passed, I'm suddenly the bad guy." He gave the Coffee to Gumshoe and sat down again. "I'm considering resigning after this case..."

Ron had slipped out of the courtroom during the chaos and headed for the prosecutor's lounge. Once inside he made himself a cup of tea and sat down, looking at the report with the first witness's testimony. This case would be heavly dependant on the witnesses from now on. The evidence, while strong, was highly questionable. Especially the blood on the defendant's tie. Also the whole thing with the mental instabillity report was weak as well. He sighed and sipped his tea, it was going to be a long trial.

Lydia sighed as she was thinking over most of the testimony. "Blood... on a tie. Don't you see that as a tad odd." she questioned quite calmly. "I mean- How does someone, without superstrength, cause someone to bleed by strangulation. It's just. not human." she pouted some.

(It's alright, he PM'd me. We can go on.)

Hugh sighed. "Well, I..." He hesitated. I really don't want to talk about that, but it might help my case if he knows...
"Yes?" said Seth. "I haven't got all day, mind you."
"I'm... I'm not insane or anything. It's something that happened, five years ago. It doesn't have a lot to do with this case, but... Well, it made them think that I might lose my mind someday. That's what it boils down to, anyway."
Hugh closed his eyes for a moment, knowing that his defence attorney would want to know every detail of the murder.
"I see," Seth said. "That is all I will need to know for now."
"Ah...?"
"Now, I have a much more important question for you." Seth's eyes bore into his. "Mr. Hugh Didit. Did you commit these murders?"
Why does he need to ask that? Hugh wondered. "I..."
He was interrupted by the bailiff. "Court will now reconvene. Please head back to the courtroom immediately."
Hugh turned nervously to Seth. "Um..."
"Gah... As inconvenient as ever," Seth said. "Ten minutes are over. Time to go."
"Okay."
Hugh returned to the defendant's chair, while Seth returned to the defence bench. He looked at Lydia. "He doesn't seem guilty, but I can't be sure yet. Why am I unable to ask that question the whole time?"
This is the first time something like that happens. It's almost as if someone's trying to prevent us from speaking to each other...

Gumshoe didn't really have much to say in reply to the Judge but he understood what he was getting at. It seemed that most people in the court thought that he was a good judge and they'd be sad to see him go. The Judge decided that he'd rethink his descion and make his mind up after the trial. Who knows he thought I might be able to make a difference in this case.

"Mr. Starwind? Court is just about to reconvene." A bailiff called from the doors.

"Ah thank you." Ron stood up and tossed his styrofoam cup in the trash. Then he picked up his briefcase and walked back into the courtroom, taking his place behind the prosecutor's bench.

"Court is now reconvened. Will the prosecution call it's next witness?" The judge announced after pounding his gavel once.

"The prosecution calls Les Haulit to the stand!" Ron Starwind called out.

"mmkay. Name's Les Haulit, n' I'm a truck driver. An' you say you want me to say what I saw? Well alrighty then."

Testimony

What I saw

"'Round 12:35 I was unloading my truck.

Coincidentally, the victim's truck was right next to mine.

I was getting mighty hungry, so at 12:41 I ran went and grabbed my lunch.

I'd stashed it in the staff office, and nobody was there when I grabbed my food.

I came back out at 12:59, and saw that there defendant there climb into the victim's car.

I heard a clunk, and the defendant came running back out.

I looked inside and found the body, and ran from there straight to the nearest phone booth."

((I "American'd" some of your words Gerku, tell me if it matters. "Lorry" and "Phonebox" got changed around.))

(All words are fine-I'm posting this placeholder before RS posts because Udgey has important info)

The judge nodded and pounded his Gavel.
"Before we continue I have some important evidence to present" Gumshoe looked panicked for a second. "Detective Gumshoe left this in my office, and I decided to present it because of it's usefulness to this case"
Image

Gumshoe looked blank for a second before answering "OH YEAH! I sorta wanted to give it to you because urr, I didn't want to lose it!" The Judge nodded and smiled. I know that I actually got it when I was having a tour of the site on the Businessmans Luncheon Club visit, but I wanted to give him a bit of a break he thought to himself

"Certainly" the Judge agreed. "Although the case seems pretty watertight" He went to hit the gavel with his hammer but missed and hit his fingers. "Ow... The Defence may begin their cross-ow-mination" he finished, rubbing his bruised hand.
