See, I was considering of taking Japanese. My parents are already looking for some good sources, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me some good tips. Or possibly a good source. So, does anyone got anything they'd like to share?

The best way to learn Japanese is to dump yourself in Japan without any money or friends to fall back on, and then be forced to adapt and learn from there.

I guarantee you this. And also to answer the topic title, yes I do.

I know random phrases which I found on the internet and stuck in the bathroom I look at them when I brush my teeth XD My boyfriend took lessons at his college for 6 months then packed it in cause the syntax is tricky at first. Do you speak any other languages? I find I can pick languages up easier because I speak French fairly well. Although with Japanese you've got a whole new alphabet to get your head around!

Well, the whole reason was because I ended up being spanish exempt, so no I don't know much other language then the one I am speaking right now. I know I'm treading on dangerous water, because like you said it's a whole new alphabet. But well, I'm pretty good at sticking at what I started, so I think I should be okay. Plus I have a cousin whose girlfriend lives in Japan ending with him moving there, and my almost spanish teacher knows a little japanese himself. I really think I can do this.

Uh, I self-taught myself a little, but I'd still be screwed if I went to Japan.

I only thing I know by heart is the katakana and hiragana charts... :sadshoe:

The only thing I'd recommend would be to practice what you do learn; you'd be surprised on how easy it is to forget things...
Yeah, I'm stupid.

Seeing as you have family in Japan, it would be a good idea to hang out with them so you can immerse yourself not just in the language, but in the culture as well (both are tied together very closely when it comes to any language). Don't feel at all bothered by the fact it uses a different writing system (it's not alphabetic, it's phonetic) - it will exercise your mind and benefit you in the long run. Besides, visiting another country could open your eyes to new interests and possibilities.

If you don't feel up to an immersion course, there should still be plenty of language programs available in your area (there's a "mandatory" Spanish one, by the sound of what you wrote earlier, so I'm thinking your local school district has healthy funding).

An alphabet is phonetic. Letters in an alphabet denote phonemes. Katakana and hiragana are syllabaries, where each glyph denotes (wait for it) a syllable.

So basically you have no idea what you're talking about.

I just meant it's gonna be harder than a language with our alphabet. It's one thing to speak it, another to read and write, is all ^^;

Try language tapes or anime or something in Japanese, so you can get used to how it sounds. A lot of language teachers constant talk at you like that so you get used to it even though it means nothing. I listen to French pop music XD If it's something you want to do then go for it, don't let anyone tell you it's too hard

I'm learning Japanese myself. I think it's the biggest goal I've set for myself, ever, but I'm completely determined.

It's all self-taught, though, because I couldn't find any Japanese classes around here. I know two people who speak Japanese fluently, but they live in my old town in Brazil. I have gotten some materials to help me:

Rosetta Stone (It's quite impressive; it really nails the vocabulary into your brain. The grammar aspect is more difficult, though.)

Japanese for Dummies (Comes with a CD with some recorded conversations. Unfortunately, it only seems to teach "tourist" Japanese.)

Japones em Quadrinhos (This particular textbook-workbook combination is in Portuguese; Originally in Spanish; I know there's a version in English, but I don't know what it's called. Has a Kanji glossary at the back, which is awesome, I think, and a sound effect dictionary (Because it aims to teach through manga) )

Japones: Expressoes Idiomaticas (Japanese idioms translated into Portuguese. I have no idea if there's a version of this in English.)

Where I live nobody knows as much japanese as I do, unfortunately. If you live in a shitty town like me, everybody will know you know japanese, even if you haven't met them before lol... Whenever a japanese person (always a woman) came from Tokyo to teach kindergarteners the school shrink would tell me.
Then I'd go ask her a hundred questions, poor woman :yogi:

random phrases.

I know whenever 'it's useless', 'awesome!', 'thanks', 'sorry', 'wait!' is spoken in an anime series, but that's basicly it, I'm afraid :P

(the only reason I know the first one is because High Max said it in MMX6, and I recognised the phase later in a subbed anime. Surprisingly used alot, though.)

Ha ha hah...
I just found out that the kid moved to Korea, not Japan. There goes me again working from an assumption. :payne:

I'm finding it really hard finding someway to completely learn japanese from a tutor. So, I might just have to stick with random phrases like Mikker said.

This topic comes up every few months. I should probably make a sticky about it or something...

The only really reliable way to learn a language (other than growing up in a place where it's spoken) is to take classes from a native speaker. You can learn a lot through self study and anime and such, but it's not quite the same. Of course, if you don't have a choice, you can always buy course text books off of amazon or someplace like that.

I know Chinese so it was natural to pick Japanese as a language class :godot:
Don't worry, Japanese is really not that hard to learn. Because the class was moving so slowly, I self taught myself a lot of stuff. Here is a great site to go to for grammar help: http://www.thejapanesepage.com. I still go there to look for more useful stuff to learn.
It actually makes more sense than English sometimes >_> The only hard part is learning Chinese characters. Getting a Japanese word pad helps a lot. NJStar has a nifty pop up dictionary that you can use to look up words (But after you use it for 3 months it expires :meekins: ) If you ever come across any Japanese that you don't know, you can type it in and hover your mouse over the words to get a description.

Natural, yes, but they are definately not the same language lol, in fact I find they're only a bit similar, but maybe that's just me.

It's a beautiful language, I have a hard time explaning to people that japanese doesn't really translate into credible english most times, there's not so many 'unnecissary' words.
At the same time I find it's easier to express how things 'feel' instead of a vagueness I find in english.

It was natural because there's a whole bunch of words that are very similar in their Chinese counterparts. VERY creepily similar :udgy:
The Onyomi for library, phone, book, and weather, for example, and there are lots more that make memorization easy. Japanese seems to have a lot in common with both Mandarin and Cantonese.

Japanese: Toshokan, denwa, hon, tenki, kanji, manga, sekai, Shinto
Chinese: Tu shu guan, dian hua, bun, tian qi, han zi, man hua, sai gai (cantonese), shen dao
It goes on and on... :hotti:

And knowing Chinese makes writing Kanji a snap. At the beginning of this year we were learning how to write numbers and the seven days of the week, and it was kind of like this the whole time: :payne: Not to mention that most of the meanings of Kanji have been kept true in both languages, if not changed a little bit. A few don't exist in Chinese so sometimes I was stumped when reading Japanese text. For example, the Ou in Ouendan is not a word in Chinese but it is in Japanese (according to my dad). :phoenix:

/end long-winded explanation.

Some. It's been a mix of high school and college classes, and self-teaching. Honestly, the most helpful part of all of it was probably in high school - my teacher spoke English only in extreme situations. The first day of class? All Japanese. It's amazing what you pick up when you're submerged in a language like that. I've never had another teacher use that approach, which really, I find quite sad. I've also had friends who have visited Japan, which I've heard is the best way.

The self-teaching comes from a number of things - I've picked up plenty from anime and songs, yes, but I honestly couldn't tell you what resources I've used. The only one I specifically remember were Japanese lessons from Planet Namek, when it still existed. XD;

Actually, there are a couple of resources listed in the AL forum, so perhaps those would help? Granted, I haven't actually tried them out, but no harm in checking, right?

Well that's a lot to do with the history between the countries, isn't it? (Forgive me if I'm mistaken, it's been a good two/three years since I've touched this branch of History.)

As for speaking it... not yet, but when all goes according to plan (DAMMIT UNI EMAIL ME BACK NOW YOU BITCHES) I shall be next year. :D Preferentially I want to do something with international waters, but with psychology and english lit as the other parts of my combined studies degree, I don't know what. Unless I go to uni AFTER I graduate and get another degree. ><

You'll be too skint then! I know Sheffield used to offer arts and Eastern languages courses at one time because they were riding the boom of international companies needing multi-language speakers. The used to concentrate on Japanese but i suspect they may have moved onto Chinese now by economic necessity - doesn't mean it's not still offered though.

I keep trying to pick up bits of Punjabi and Urdu at work but I am soooo rubbish at retaining language as I lack the gene that allows one to *think* in another language.

I know. Hopefully I'll get into Newcastle and I at least won't have to worry about my debts for accommodation while I stay at home. (Just the debt that'll come from the year I'll be spending in Japan. XD) If I didn't want it so badly, I wouldn't bother because my GOD do I suck at MFL grammar. XD A in German GCSE without paying attention for 2 years- my written coursework barely scraped a pass. Disadvantage to my school is we only had two languages (after the Latin teacher left) and I didn't want to study any at A-level so now I have to find courses that don't require A-level language.

I can understand that. My borstal school had an appalling record at languages. And yet I know people who went on to do them at Uni (someone from my school went to stufy Russian I recall). I think if you're wanting to study non-Western languages they used to be less hung up on whether you'd done Ger/Fr/Spa at school - English Lang and used to be a more important issue.

In the FAQ it states that years of study would be required to understand a text-heavy game such as Gyakuten Saiban, is this referring to self-study from a text book, or taking classes from a native speaker?
