Killer 7: Usually labeled as "nothing special" But in my opinion it's one of the most amazing stories to date. Character design and development is great. Music is pure win. Graphics are in a comic book styled way and is just too cool! And voice acting is just perfect. I love this game and shall always consider it #1 until I find another game that is much better. (Which I doubt!)

Oh and Harvest Moon Another Wonderful Life: Sure, you didn't have much option in bachelors and yeah it's nothing new compared to AWL but it's the enjoyment that matters. I love this game for the amount of things to do in it. You have many things to unlock, many people to meet, many ways to earn money (including a cheat XD)

The second Castlevania game? What the shit, that's not remotely obscure, why would anyone have never heard of it?

Anyway, I enjoyed it... although it needed more bosses/enemy variety. I'd love for it to be remade.

Well, Simon's Quest is pretty obscure compared to other popular Castlevania titles like SotN, AoS/DoS, even the 3rd game(which is also my favorite). Honestly, I've never played Simon's Quest either because I could never find it available for sale or rent.

Compared to them, maybe, but every Castlevania fan should know about it, right? o.o And old games like that are hard to find anyway... I only know of one store around here that sells them.

I've only played the GBA (except for CotM) and DS Castlevanias, though.

I dunno, sometimes games in a popular series could get overlooked because either other games were just more popular, or they weren't that good in general. I mean the original Zelda and Link To The Past get 10x more attention than The Adventures of Link, which was completely different from its predecessor and even its sequel. This may sound like bullshit, I'm not too sure to be honest because I'm not a diehard Zelda fan.

Also, this was when I was like 6-8, back when NES games were available for rent at rental stores like Blockbuster and such. I found Castlevania 3 but I couldn't find Simon's Quest. Maybe I should find a rom of it eventually or something, I always wanted to try it out.

Unlimited SaGa was so out there awesome! I almost beat all the character except for the 10 year old witch, game was epic.

FFX-2 was good since I actually wanted to play it all the way through.

Tenchu Z was a wonderful game, almost no one liked the game but there's no feeling like jumping off a building a tower and sending your blade through some f'ers back.

no. hes right. Generals for the most part is considered to be utter utter crap. It is an example of how EA likes to monopolize the market by buying out companies and their game franchises, and then attempting to continue the series, but doing a good job at screwing up everything about it.

Thank god they learned their lesson with Command and Conquer 3... they fixed almost all the problems I had with generals... But nothing will ever beat the Westwood-made command and conquer games.

It may not be that Generals itself was horrible, but it certainly was not a command and conquer game. It just didn't fit in at all with the gameplay, story, or anything period with the other games. The airports are the most obvious example of the gameplay difference.

That game was awesome. I still go back and play it, absolutely a fantastic game and at the same time horribly horribly cheesey and retarded :hotti:

I mean the humor was crude (sorta), using all the different animals and in all the different environments was fun as hell, especially some of the puzzles and minigames (one minigame at the end of each world. The trophies were pieces of your robot body that got seperated and scattered). And then the "final" battle was fun as hell running through a shrunken city, fighting off all the robot animals was fun.
The music was probably the corniest part, but I loved that. The "elevator style" music really made things more upbeat and humorous as you ran around the level, and if you wanted to you could blow the speakers up for fun :gymshoe:

Although one game which deserves alot more praise and attention (as well as bringing the damn prequel and sequel out in English) is Earthbound. Absolutely fantastic game. Easily one of, if not the best, classical style rpgs. Screw final fantasy up its high horsed @$$, those games have nothing on the epicness of Earthbound.

I prefer the Sonic Adventure games, sure, the Gamecube adapations are terrible but the original Dreamcast versions are easily the best entries in the Sonic series.

The 16-Bit Sonics are some of the poorest quality platformers in existence. Seriously, they're on Bubsy level.

Please don't hate me for this..... I truly love FFVII. Yes it's overrated but not at the time. It was a decent RPG with strange yet interesting characters. If you ask me they butchered the story with Advent Children! Please just let the series die! God....... But it was my first game that I was decent at.

Another game that hardly anyone played was Redsteel. Though some of the controls were screwy I found it to be quite fun. But that's just me...... :/

it wasn't that good , but i admit it was fun. It was really butchered out of proportion when it was reviewed

I can't believe I forgot one of my favourite games... Monster Hunter.

This game is shunned by most everyone because the learning curve is perhaps the steepest in any video game, and 'clumsy' controls. Most people get their arse handed to them by the first boss fight. :S

But yeah, it's possible to achieve hundreds of hours of play time, and the battles are epic, supah epic.

Yes, which is ironic considering FF7's graphics have not aged well at all, while 8/16-bit graphics are considered a nice throwback. I mean, I never thought Aeris's death back then was any meaningful, but nowadays it just looks hilarious.

FF7 wasn't even revolutionary with Aeris dying.
Galuf in FF5 also died, and he was a main character. I think that one was more touching than Aeris' death.
It's a pity that FF5 wasn't released in USA / EU until the PS1 and GBA versions.

Someone already mentioned Killer 7, so I'll second that. Got trashed pretty hard in some parts of the press, but they analyzed it from the wrong angle. I'm looking forward to No More Heroes at least, even if it is a new story and universe.

Planescape: Torment - Never see this game mentioned enough. Baldur's Gate and Ultima always seem to get the love, but P:T is probably the best RPG I've ever played. On its own merits, the storyline was strong enough to lay a perfect foundation for a game. But everything else was well done, so no complaints here.

Eternal Darkness- If any game was unfairly shunned commercially last generation, it'd probably have been this game. Excellent story, perfect atmosphere, and the gameplay made really good use of the different time periods, physics, etc.

Fable- I know it's cool to trash this game for not meeting impossible expectations, but if you strip away the hype, I'm pretty sure you'd find a really good game underneath, with some really cool character building and customization options. Shouldn't hold Molyneaux's big mouth against the game itself.

Indigo Prophecy- Yeah, the story kind of falls apart near the end, but everything else was just done so well. Some people didn't like the "button-mashing" scenes, but they were done really well in moderation.

True, it sure didn't suffer from a lack of critical acclaim. But the OP was rather vague on what constituted a shunned game, so I thought I'd throw it in with my not-so-subtle name choice, heh.

At least only one character died, unlike FF4 where damn near 3/4 of the cast get killed off then miraculously come back...well except Tellah, but I never really liked him. haha, but it's still my favorite FF out of all the games.

But anyway, as for another shunned game...see this is really hard because there I don't consider "cult classic" games as shunned because there is still a hardcore fanbase. Aaaahhhhhh.....if I wanted to not restrict myself to that condition....uuuuuuuurgh I'd have to say the Bemani games in general. I mean they're very popular in Japan but in the States, except for DDR they're relatively unknown. IIDX got its debut a year or so back but it kinda flopped due to the game itself lacking severely.

Ones I liked that were shunned...Siren (or Forbidden Siren for you Europeans and Asians). That game is impossible to beat without a guide, but the storyline and seemingly unrelated but completely related second objective unlocks keep the game interesting. (Who thought that putting a wet towel in a freezer as a spiritual guide could be so important to a doctor?)
Disaster Report and Raw Danger. While I wouldn't buy the games at full price, the game itself is worth buying. Nothing like running from floods and cops to make a game awsome.
FF9. Everytime I talk to someone, they say 7 or 8 is better. I hated 7, and 8 say is just as good as 9, in my opinion. Maybe I just like 9 because it was more to the comedy side of things...

The problem with Bemani games is mostly lack of song recognition/hooking songs. DDR had rhythmic songs that were designed to make you dance. The rest of the Bemani games I've seen? Crappy generic stuff.

In fact, this is probably one of the (many) reasons why I consider Guitar Hero to be vastly superior to Guitarmania in every single way.

Actually, there are a lot more memorable songs from the other Bemani games than DDR, such as IIDX, Pop'n, GF/DM, etc. It's just DDR got more popular in the US because it's easier to play and has more marketing potential.

Beatmania US bombed because of its crappy songlist, and it's just 9th Style painted purple. Also, it's a hard game with a very steep learning curve, and with its shitty songlist, no wonder newer folks didn't wanna continue playing.

Oh, and I'll agree with you in that GH is miles better than GF.

Oh man, I thought I was the only one that called Guitar Freaks Guitarmania. In fact, it wasn't until recently that somebody said "dude, it's fucking called Guitar Freaks" and I was like "whoa really? Since when?" On the subject of Bemani, Guitar Hero kicks Guitar Freaks's ass, and Rock Band, from what I've played at Best Buy (and I've driven there just to play it), will more or less kick Drummania and the hook-up line of Bemani's games as well.

I'll be honest here, I like playing Bemani's rhythm games, bar Dance Dance Revoution (and I actually hate Guitar Freaks now that GH did what it did and better), a whole lot. But are they actually that good? The biggest issue, for me, with their line is that they're all actually the exact same game with a different peripheral. Harmonix's games really raised the bar for me and I've been spoiled. Besides Drummania, which I say is damn fun because it's the only peripheral Bemani did right, Rock Band more or less has me covered because its songs are better, its instruments are better (in terms of quality, even having a lesser amount of ... hitting things didn't make Rock Band's drum-kit any worse), and it actually is flat out universally appealing.

Not even my nerdy dad wanted to play Bemani games with me. We played Pop'n Music over in Japan once and he got halfway through a song before saying "Wow, this really, really bites" and left me all alone to finish it off... and there's really no point in playing a rhythm game unless you get to show off.
