Now before you reach for your torches and pitchforks and raid my teeny apartment, let me be very clear: I'm not talking about a row of Google ads. I'm not talk about long flashy banners, or talking smilie faces on every page, or Mountain Dew cans as rank markers or anything quite that dramatic. If this goes through, it will only be one banner, on the Index page, in the corner, about 250x150. We'll have to shuffle the main page layout to accomodate it, but in the end, it's only one banner, on one page. No other page will be affected. The forum will not be affected.
As to how this came about, let me explain exactly how I was approached.
If you go to Google and search for "Court Records" this is the first site that shows up. Try it, it's pretty cool, actually. According to our site statistics, several thousand people every month show up at CR having Googled "Court Records". When an advertiser working for a site for *actual* court records and legal documents noticed this, he emailed me to ask if I would put a banner on CR to redirect anyone who comes to us looking for legal stuff and instead finds Giant Godot Head.
Now, we have been very fortunate to have the support of many generous fans through donations over the past year. I'm so grateful to all of them for making this site and our contests possible. But the roughly $150 we have in our paypal now isn't quite enough to pay off the 2 year plan Wooster and I would like to secure come January, when we have to pay up. I don't want to say exactly how much I've been offered for the banner until we're certain it's the best thing for CR and it has gone through, but it'll cover our 2 year plan plus leave us a nice chunk left over to make our Apollo Justice release party even better. Maybe even enough that we can give away actual copies of the game as prizes!
I know ads are a big bummer for everyone. I've avoided them as much as possible, and have been able to because of you guys. But the chance to pay off the site for the next two years AND have extra for goods to give away is too good for me to just ignore. It benefits everyone, for the sake of one banner smaller than most sigs here on this forum.
I am not trying to make money off of this site. I, nor any of the mods/admins, will be making money off this site. Any and every penny we make from the ad will go directly into funding the site and its contests, just like we've always done with donation money. We want to celebrate AJ being released, we want to do Pick Your Prosecutor and the OC Contest again, and if this goes through we'll be able to.
Of course, if the ad is ineffective in channeling people to the new site, it'll get pulled and everything will go back to normal. But we'll still have a nice down payment to keep us afloat for a while.
Please feel free to discuss this in this thread, but if all you have to offer is "BLAH ME HATE ADS" that really doesn't help anyone. I'll answer all your questions to the best of my ability and put you at ease if I can. I know it's impossible for me not to be labeled a sell out, but I don't think a silly ad is too high a price to pay for some site security.
And hey, it means more free stuff for you guys, so try to look at it positively, all right?

It's not really a matter of the site disappearing completely... I'm not so bad off that I can't use what we have with some of my own money to make it work. But if the site can pay for itself just by existing and having a conveniently Googled name, all the better for me.
