Aww, congratulations! I hope the best for you and your puppy.

Umm, the only advice that I can think of at the moment is since he/she is a puppy, get it some chew-toys and don't let it gnaw on you. (I know it's really cute!) That sets the stage for a nippy dog by letting it think that it's ok to put its teeth on people.

I hope someone in your family has done some research on dogs, and are prepared to spend a lot of time with him or her. It's not something to take lightly.

Congrats! never had a dog for more than 3 days (puppy named Alcatraz that escaped from the local humane society, and we found it on the side of a road along with two other escapees... wound up having canine distemper and dying immediately... yeah).

Most I know about them is that it takes friggen forever to potty train them compared to every single other creature I've ever had come through my door, and that I'd never have one in my house, ever. Other than that.. dunno, lol. is it a smooshy face old english bulldog?

Oh, congrats!

The best bit of advice is to be patient, firm but loving, and to make sure it has plenty of exercise. And don't look at what everyone else feeds it (80 percent of people overfeed their pets), research properly.

And have fun with them. <3

Yes, research your food... don't go with grocery store brands, most are TERRIBLE for ANY animals!

I know a lot of people who feed the BARF diet to their dogs with positive results. This is a puppy though, not sure what it should start on. Oh, and positive reinforcement is a MILLION times more effective when training an animal than ANY form of punishment.

First off - enroll in puppy classes as soon as you can. Find some locally but DO NOT go near ANY classes that advocate smacking, hitting or anything that Cesar Milan advocates on his TV programmes. The man is an ARSE of the highest order. Positive reinforcement training is the only way for puppies. Early training taken seriously will avoid problems later on.

DO NOT punish the puppy for pooping or weeing indoors. Dogs are simple creatures, they live in the moment. They do not understand what they are being punsihed for if you do it after the fact. You can easily cause your dog a complex about tolieting if you punish after the fact for accidents. The best way to toilet train is to take the dog out every hour and go nuts with treats and praise if it does something in teh yard. So no letting the dog out on its own to toilet at that stage as it won't learn. You need to be there with it to go looney with proase when it does what you want it to do. Dogs always want to make you happy so it will soon work out what causes the praise and the treats to happen XD

SOCIALISATION. As soon as puppy has had its injections, take it out with you. Make a point of taking it as many places as possible and let it meet and be handled by as many people as possible - kids, old people, people of different skin colours, people with physical differences, people with hats, people with bags. Take it out in the car, get it used to crowds, loud noises, as much as possible. Then it will be a well adjusted adult dog with no strange fears. Let it meet dogs of all colours and breeds too. And anything else you can think of! Cats - hamsters - whatever you need your dog to be okay with.

If the dog does display fear don't smooch it, just remain calm and then tempt with treats and praise. It needs to associate potentially scary things with Happy!Owner and Good!Things.

Dogs are social creatures. They live in packs. You are now that dog's pack. No chucking it out in the yard and ignoring it - you are now responsible for that dog and need to treat it as a companion with respect like you would a friend. And it will treat you better than a friend in return, because dogs will love yoi no matter what you do to them, but that's no excuse to treat them badly XD

Read up on the breed as well - get books out of the library and look on the web. That way you will know any potential medical issues or foods to avoid. In terms of food, don't buy the popular brands, look for ones that have actual MEAT in them and as few colourings and addition of cereals as you can find. Dogs are like kids - if you give them a load of additives they will get hyper. Stick to as natural a dog food as you can find - most of those kinds cost more, but you feed less, as they have more nutrients than the popular stuff which is bulked out with filler.

Why yes I do have dogs and mine are rescues with issues, as things were not done right when they were puppies, so this is something I have a bee in my bonnet about XD

PS. Your dog is *not* going to try and "take over" if it gets on the sofa. Don't believe that sort of nonsense that people tell you. Dogs will respect people who command respect, not people who tell them not to get on the sofa XD

You can feed puppies BARF but it does take dedication.

This is true. The best way to react to nipping is to squeak in pain loudly and stop playing immediately even if it doesn't hurt. Dogs understand that and will learn. Same if you offer treats and they nearly take your hand off (like a certain madam of a dog who is sitting next to me right now! She's much better at it now!)

Sounds like with any animal then (I introduce my ratties to everyone and everything and they're the most social, loving animals ever because of it, would NEVER nip or bite, and just give constant kissy licks non-stop to everyone). Yeah, introduce the dog to as many people and animals as physically possible, but keep the dog on a leash as a just-in-case, although some breeds just have it ingrained into them to chase and kill smaller animals (terriers I'm looking at YOU). However, there's still exceptions to ALL rules.

If I've learned anything from being a crazy pet person, it's NOT to just read one or two sources and follow them, but to read AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE about anything and everything!!! Take it ALL in, and then come to your own conclusions. A LOT of times, some information you recieve will be false, even from your vet (although it may be different with dogs, once again I'm thinking of exotics.. and it's hard enough finding an exotic vet, let alone one who knows that particular species you actually have).

If I remember correctly, some decent dry dog food would be Innova, chicken soup for the dog lover's soul, Wellness, etc. . I use Innova for the cat and the dog version in my rat food mix, and it's pretty darn good. as far as BARF is concerned (they'll sell it in feed stores most of the time, or holistic pet food stores), it's all fresh bones and meat, and takes serious dedication. My one friend will give all kinds of things to her dog (mixing it up), including ostrich and buffalo.

You may find a class where the trainer speaks English - it's not unusual, if they are serious trainers who attend shows etc.

AHAH! Oops :) Had she eaten recently? It's good practise to take puppies out straight away after eating so they can poop. And don't feed her too many treats between meals or you'll never get her on a "poop schedule" :)

I only have one thing to say:

For god's sake, never feed them anything outside of their foodbowls. I mean, if you're giving them treats or something, fine, but put them by the bowls.

My mum spoiled her dog by giving her scraps of this and that from where-ever she is, and I can not tell you how many times I've wanted to strangle the dog now for stealing food at every opportunity. The dog is now also somewhat overweight, which is also bad.

Remember to watch what you do. A little bad habit can quickly turn into a great big mess.

Nah - not with a puppy. You do need to have treats on hand at all times to reward the behaviour you want the dog to repeat. But I will say that it's *always* good to make a dog work for treats, not to just give them out all day like sweeties. Teach a trick, or a behaviour, and then get them to repeat that for treats once they have it down. Our dogs NEVER get a treat unless they sit nicely, offer a paw, do a bow, or lie down (their ability varies so we don't overextend them). And they never but never get fed food from the table or off our plates.

Er, let me clarify. My house uses "biscuit" for the things you're talking about, and I do understand the use of those (we used them to teach Cricket to sit and to dance, although she's never cared to learn anything else). "Treat" is things outside of their normal food and biscuits.

Sorry if I've confused anyone.

If you put the effort in, the rewards will be ten fold. The love a dog can give is so rewarding, but you do need to work hard. Walks, feeding, grooming, playing... it's hard work, but oh so worth it.

I had my dog for a year, and she tragically died fom a seizure, but it was by far the best year of my life!

Are you taking her out on walks regularly? Trust me, dogs love walks. The longer the walk, the better.

Here are a few more pointers:

-Don't pet them when you're holding food. They'll think you're going to give it to them.
-Dogs love peanut butter but don't give them too much or they'll become spoiled.
-Don't feed them a lot of human food. Treats are fine but it's better if you can stick to just dog biscuits.
-Don't grab their paws or handle them too roughly. They'll think you're attacking them and will retaliate.
-If they paw at the door, let them out. Likely, they'll have to do their business and you really don't want them going on your priceless kashmir rug.
-Make sure you regularly check their food and water bowls
-Make sure they're not digging any holes under the fence. That's a sign that they want to get out.

Dogs are great fun at times.

If they do start to steal food, exclude them from contact with any members of your family for a few minutes, and then let them back in. If they do it again, do it in increasing measurements of time. It works. I've got a lurcher (Greyhound/Collie cross) and it's bred to steal, but we tamed her, and now she doesn't steal, even if we leave food on the floor.
