The stuff on Nick's hands is a string of small firecrackers which is tied on a long stick(usually used to put garments out in the sun). We burn firecrackers in the new year eves as a tradition. On this picture, Nick is playing with the stick and three girls are dancing around him ^-^
( I can see why Edgey is getting so angry...even not being on fire, firecrackers can also be dangerous, not to mention Nick is waving an iron stick like that = =)
PS:
is trying hard to keep Edgey from killing Nick, but because my fault he looks like holding his left hand on the picture. Sorry,pal 
And this one is my favourite copy, though I know the black flame expresses Edgey's murderous look better. It just make it lookslike burning apple jelly to me.I love it.

When I was still in China, the firecrackers just mean unbelievable loud noise(you can imaging that...the noise outside the window is so loudly that you can hardly fall asleep) and thick smoke(that's why we always tie them on a long stick, because you can't burn them in the room but outside the window). However, I'm missing it so badly now. Once my mum said firecrackers promise happiness, now I can see it's true.
