I know that a lot of people are unhappy with what was done with Phoenix's character in this game, but I really like him. I think it gave us an interesting new look at his character and he's just so awesome. A fantastic mix of mystery and sarcasm. I felt so bad for Phoenix after finding out what he went through and that made his vindication at the end so much sweeter.

So this is a thread for discussing love for the Phoenix we see in this game (no character bashing please). I'll start us off with some pretty fan art of our favorite poker playing hobo.

Hooray, I'm not the only one who didn't hate Phoenix in this game!

Yeah, I'll admit, maybe he stole a fair share of the spotlight from Apollo, but I personally would've felt cheated if they hadn't given any explanation behind the incident that ended his career. Hell, I nearly fangasmed when I realized I got to play through that case.

But yeah, Phoenix was actually pretty badass in this one. And don't pretend that his personality shouldn't have changed at all over 7 years, because that almost never happens. Everyone experiences something that changes their worldview in that kind of timespan, and Phoenix not only lost his job due to forces beyond his control, but became a father. As a result, he became notably less high-strung over the years, which only makes sense.

I also like that Phoenix was able to both affect major change in the legal system and kind of break the fourth wall at the same time. What a way to go out.

I absolutely agree. People don't stay the same for seven years and he's certainly changed some, but considering what he went through its really not a shock (the last part of the game broke my heart). Besides, I really don't think he's changed that much. He still seeks the truth and cares deeply about others, even if his morals have become a bit iffy. He is a very sweet father to Trucy which I found to be absolutely adorable.

Yeah, they definitely had a good father/daughter relationship. Very cute and sweet and other mushy feelings. :will:

Gotta say, my heart skipped a beat when the falsified evidence showed up.

@Quadros I loved him breaking the fourth wall. Wasn't sure if I was Apollo during that part or me or someone else.

Cool, everyone's saying that his character sucks because...he's a hobo?!!? That doesn't make sense...his character is more calm and serious, and that's awesome, it's better then the personality Phoenix had back when he was a lawyer. Probably he'll have that personality in GS5, when he's a Attorney again?

BTW-The fanart is awesome, especially the one where both Nick's are pointing!

Yeah, Hobonix makes a great father. I always got that vibe from him anyway. It's sorta the same situation as with Pearl, actually (Nick + Pearl + Maya + Trucy = fun) :minuki: :maya: :pearl: :phoenix: . I love how Trucy keeps asking Phoenix if he's going to find her a Mommy. XD Reminds me almost of Pearl playing matchmaker with Nick and Maya, actually...except not as blatant in Trucy's case.

Also, personally, I don't think Hobonix is all that "immoral", per se. In a way, the forged ace was a fitting retribution for what Kristoph did seven years prior. The difference, of course, being that Phoenix's 'forgery' actually existed, albeit not being the same. More notable is the fact that Phoenix is a lot more "out there" in AA4. I'm not entirely convinced that the "white powder" is the only thing Phoenix was stockpiling :P

Phoenix's "secret mission" and its ramifications instill me with confidence that he still has that sense of justice we all know and love from the first three games. Here's to hoping he comes back and defends proper for at least one case in GS5. Black suit + sky blue tie ftw?!?

He's really sweet in this game.

I found him funny in the 3 previous games, but now I think he's awesome (and sexy!!).

I like the little sadness in his eyes sometimes.

He's been through a lot of things, he couldn't remain the same.

Ah, good, I wasn't the only one thinking that. :p

I've said this elsewhere, but I think I like Nick now more than I did when he was actually the ace attorney. I can't really put a finger on why, oddly enough, but I still have about 75% of 4-4 to get through, so maybe I'll come up with a reason after that.

Well until I kept hitting snags with the psyche locks -_- but yeah I like phoenix more this way plus Ive always wanted to see Phoenix in the eyes of someone else.

I found his character quite fascinating in this game. You definitely get the feeling that he's seen a lot more of the world, experienced a lot more things, maybe became jaded but Trucy's "light" kept pulling him through. I thought that was the SWEETEST thing... the moment he was talking about Trucy like that. <333 His sense of justice is definitely still there, but it's gotten a lot more realistic than just "believe in your client, and everything will be A-OK! :butzthumbs: "

My only gripe was that just because he's not a lawyer anymore doesn't mean he can't shave once in a while lol (technically he just LOOKS like a hobo.. nothing else). And I wanted a surprise sprite where he takes off his hat! That would've been awesome!

I agree about wanting to see Phoenix's hair. You can sort of see that it is still spiky in the back, but I missed seeing his spiky hair in the game since he had it covered by that hat at all time (although he had a good reason for wearing the hat so much). I kind of like the stubble though. I think it goes well with his new image really well, although I suppose he'll probably have to shave it if I get what I want and he gets his badge back.

I agree that he matured. He seemed more so in his old case in 4-4, even a bit cocky compared to the previous cases we've seen him in.

Spoiler:
And the forged evidence? Well, lets not forget he pulled the same trick as he did with the blood dripped card(4-1) in Justice For All. But our beloved hobo never stooped low enough to use false evidence whenever he was in a bind(only to save Maya and convict Kristoph). Perhaps this implies that he'll make a return in GS5 as a lawyer. I got jolted for a bit when you present the 'stolen' letter in 4-4; I thought he would get caught again...but the fact that it was a replica and a recording seems to prove that Wright is not really crooked...

Or maybe not. In the eyes of the law, it doesn't matter why you cheated. Just that you did...I guess we'll have to wait and see for our hobo's future.

Hey, as long as we're talking about HoboNick and flashing pictures around, would someone mind explaining the story behind this comic from Kinoko Kaihatsu:

Spoiler: 4-2
Image

I was waiting for something to explain it the entire time I was playing 4-2, and nothing ever came up. Is it just fanon or is this inspired by something from the game? (Incidentally, I can't read Japanese and I haven't finished 4-4 yet.)

Nevermind. I am unobservant and did not realize that was a telephone pole....

And so I'm still being relevant: more Hobo pics!

I really enjoyed HoboNick <3. After playing GS4 I felt like I was seeing him in a new light, and it really made me go back to the first three games and appreciate him as a character more than I did before.

And he's adorable with Trucy <3. I can't help but think that his mellowing out has a lot to do wtih Trucy being around all the time: when your daughter can read your every physical cue, you had better learn to hide things quick! Seeing Phoenix's cleverness reflected in Trucy was really cute, too. It's interesting to see the kinds of things he passed on to her.

Well... I do and I don't love Hobo Nick. His character design only got more attractive, and I liked his mellow/sarcastic take on things, and he and Trucy are positively adorable together! On the other hand, he could be a bit of a douche at times, and I didn't like his seeming omniscience. Generally speaking, though, I have been and always will be a Phoenix fan.

Thanks for the awesome pics! Hobo Nick needs love. ^_^

Hobo Phoenix... He was so cool. I kind of missed how... dorky attourney Phoenix was. It's strange to me, though, that he's suddenly so engimatic, (though I know it's probably all Trucy's fault...) I mean, he was super easy to read through the first few games, to the point where it was contantly pointed out, and 7 years time he suddenly becomes all stoic and mysterious. XD

That last bit of the game was nice though, because we got to see that he's basically the same character at heart, just matured, and with a different outside (not just appearance wise, but outer personality).

I still haven't warmed up to him as much as I feel I should have, but I appreciate.

I'm not sure I would call his development and growth sudden, although it may seem that way since we don't see that time in the game. Seven years is actually a lot of time over which to develop particularly considering all the trials he had to overcome and the new responsibilities of being a father. I agree that Phoenix is definitely the same person at heart and seriously cool.

Well, yes, 7 years is a long time, but it all felt sudden. It really seemed like he was coping with the pain though, because around 4-4 (You know what part I'm talking about, I asssume), he was still... even then, much more collected and HoboPhoenix-like.

...Hmm, I wonder if that made sense...

When I got to that part in the game, I really did feel like he was the old Phoenix again, which felt great, but you could feel the jadedness begin to grow. When Trucy came into the picture, it was heart-breaking. I could see him slumped over a desk trying to call around to see if Trucy had any relatives or guardians to look after her, only to find none. The first time he talked to her in the office you could feel the strain on his voice as he's talking, saying how he doesn't know how to raise kids (if you examine Charley during this sequence he makes some kind of remark saying, "I'm sure kids need to be more than just watered" xD). He was so uncertain during this period and when the screen faded to black, he talked about how hard it got at times, and I wanted to cry for him. :larry: And then We see Trucy's sprite on screen and Phoenix said how she helped pull him through those dark times. The moment he said, "She was my light.." I REALLY wanted to cry!

To that effect, you can see him much more collected 7 years later, thanks to Trucy's bright smile. Everyone say awwww~ :edgy:

^ I think that was my favorite part of the entire game. I've been waiting for months just to play that flashback scene (I spoiled myself horribly before the game came out, so I knew... more than I probably should have going in), and it did not disappoint at all.

Spoiler: 4-4 Epilogue
Even more significant, and bittersweet, to me was when Nick was talking with Trucy's mum and at one point he thinks to himself, "I need to keep my eye on [Trucy]; I'm the only one who knows how she really feels." She seemed so chipper, even as a child, despite everything she lost during her short life (kind of like Maya in 3-5, now that I think about it), that it was almost a relief for Nick to reveal that on some level, she's been affected by those events. I'm glad he sees it, and I think it's really telling of how strong their relationship is.

I really wish we could have an anime bridging the gap between 3 and 4, because I would LOVE to see more Phoenix and Trucy interacting, especially when she's still tiny. The flashback was nice, but it didn't really have time to develop the father/daughter relationship. The fact that Phoenix was asking Trucy to call him Papa so quickly was kinda awkward... XD;;; But I can see him doing that maybe a few days or weeks into their living together.

Raising a child is so much different than just hanging out with Maya and Pearl, after all. Even if Phoenix got to act like serrogate familiy to them, at the end of the day they still go home. It's a lot different when you live with a kid 24/7 and are the sole person responsible for their well-being. The idea of Phoenix as a father really touches my heart, and it's too bad we won't get the chance to see more of that, from the beginning of their time together (though I love their present day interaction, too <3).

Which is why I'm glad there's so much fanart of it . :edgy:

Aw~ I love the HoboHodo stuff. And the only reason he's more mysterious is because we can no longer read his mind. I love his chuckle animation too.

The MASON System is broken... How can you take evidence into the past?
And how could he show his memories to the jury? I chuckled after realizing that he didn't have the mystic ability to break the fourth wall AND time travel.

Oh, and might as well:

Phoenix's and Trucy's interactions are some of my favorite scenes in the game. I also love how doing certain things in the game prompts Trucy into telling these sweet and often funny stories about them (like the ferris wheel story, the lipstick one, and the fingerprint powder story). I would definitely have loved to see more interaction between Phoenix and young Trucy. They are such an adorable family!
