Random question that just occured, you aren't going to post the link to the beta here, right? That would make it too easy to be leaked out, you'd get people not signed up messing with it, etc.

The beta will be public; everyone will be free to give it a whack. This way, I can fix any bugs that pop up much faster, and therefore I can get the final version out much faster. :P

First of all, a bit of off-topic rambling.. For those people saying that making custom sprites is too hard, if you can draw and colour well on a PC it's not all that difficult to make something decent looking. For example;

Spoiler:
Original Apollo Sprite

So yeah, if you can draw your character, scan it in and colour it well, turning it into a sprite is pretty simple. No need to do it pixel by pixel.. such a painstaking method. As you can see the version I came up with using the official art isn't perfect by any means, but by zooming in and cleaning the outlines up a bit it would pretty much be an exact replica of the art style found in the sprites in the game.

Anyway, now to get back on topic.. KanadaKid, I said it before in an email but i'll say it again, this project is exceeding all expectations. I hope the beta will be released sometime soon as i'm itching to make something. With the code that you have on the site already, if I were by some miracle able to compile that, would it be a partially working version of what you plan to release in this beta? What I mean to say is, could I start making my cases in an incomplete version of the editor and play them to a certain extent in an incomplete version of the player? I have a week off starting the 7th of March and I was hoping to get some progress done then you see :)

You could, since the player and editor (at least built with the code in the CVS) will work together. However, the problem is that if you start making your case now, it may not work once the beta comes out since I'm always tweaking the file format, among other things. I could write converters every time something changes, but that would be a hassle and rather impractical since not many people are using the editor/player as-if right now anyway. That's also the reason why I'm don't want to officially release anything just yet (not just because I'm a lazy jerk ;P).

Does that mean pretty much everything is subject to change, or are most of triggers/commands going to remain the same throughout? I'm thinking that if only certain things were to change I could at least get a head start on some of the code, such as certain textblocks.. not to mention i'd get to try out some of the sprites i'm working on :)

Also, at the risk of sounding annoying, in your opinion is there any chance the beta will hit before march 7th? XD

Thank Godot for people like you :godot: So you just resized the image and cleaned it up? I'll have to try that... eventually.

There were a few more steps to it than that but basically yes, that's the idea behind it. I use Paintshop Pro.. not too sure if Photoshop has all the same or similar tools.. but these are the steps I took;

Cut out image > Pixelate > Resize 50% using pixel resize > Clean up edges

I'd be more interested in a tutorial on how to (computerized, I can't draw well by hand) do side-view (for prosecutors/attorneys) well.
I'm alright for front view, I think.

Also, another question... I suppose it would just require a bit of scripting with when questions, presenting, etc come up... but would it be possible to do a case where, for part of it, you play as the prosecution?
(Yes, I do have plans for a case involving this)

I can't see why not.. the only piece I would see that would be hard is when presenting evidence.. seeing as the prosecution doesn't do that.. as far as the text blocks and things go, from what i've seen of the editor making it look like you're playing the presecutor in court wouldn't be all that difficult.

Hm... the prosecution could still present evidence to back up a witness's claim when questioned, and of course to call the witnesses themself, and so on...

Or do you mean the case maker isn't very friendly towards that?

From what i've seen the case maker seems pretty friendly towards any ideas i've thought about throwing at it.. making it work from the prosecution standpoint would obviously take more work, but I think it'd be doable, definetly.

On an unrelated note, here is a sprite of my main character. I drew the lineart myself (well, traced most of it <<;) but this is just to prove my concept of Art -> Sprite is feasible.

... wow this is kind of becoming off-topic. There needs to be a forum for fan case-making resources :yuusaku: The 'Present Evidence' section isn't so helpful.

Anyway, lets get this back on topic, I feel like i've stolen this one, which isn't good >>;

Anyone here tried to compile the incomplete source for KanadaKid's Case Editor? From the documentation pages on his site he mentions you need to already be well versed in C++, which I am not.. so if someone has compiled it successfully, could you please PM me and help me through it?

Edit: I had a go at compiling this, it went horribly wrong. I think I might PM KanadaKid and see if he'd be willing to send me a recent compile just so I could try it out a little (I don't care if I can't present evidence in the player etc yet, I just want to get writing some script XD)

I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Can't wait to try out the beta. It's looking great so far, KanadaKid, keep up the awesome work!

Edit: Actually, I've got a question about the music. I'm just curious if it'll be possible to get the music to loop. For example, I could have it play Cornered, then chop it off at a certain point where I could have it loop constantly and just about seamlessly without the music fading out on me in the middle of the case and starting right back at the intro. If that wording's too confusing, I'll just say it like this. Could I have it play "Cornered1.mp3" in the background, and then if that music file reaches the end before it manually stops through case progression or whatever, have it loop "Cornered2.mp3" until I tell it to stop? Sorry if that's still confusing, but I can't figure out a good way to word it. Thanks.

I thought of a workaround for something like that: have it play a 'Sound Effect', the song's intro, then have it play a music file (the looping section) automatically when that SFX finishes.

Although i've yet to compile the code, I assume this has been taken into consideration (looping BG music that is) seeing as the game has looping BG music throughout.

Edit: New casemaker update! Woop :D

Anyways, I hate entering codes, can you change the editor so that you can just type in what it says,
without any stuff like {,/,:,etc. Kinda like mechabowser's, you just click action and type in what to say, etc.

I really don't care so much about coloured text, when is it gonna be out?

Thx KanadaKid for all of your hard work!

You can either do it by hand, or just use the dialogs to automatically insert everything into the script. You can basically make an entire case without manually writing out the triggers, etc. As I said before, the beta is either this month or the next... assuming I don't get sidetracked or whatever.

A fairly simple question...
But for those like me who aren't too fond of the touchscreen approach, is keyboard input also supported?

I've favorited KanadaKid's case maker site, so I can check for updates regularly.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BETA! In fact, I may break down and learn how to compile it myself... Eh, probably not. It'd be better to wait for the completed, stable beta anyway, I think.

So, I wonder... Is everything TOTALLY customizeable, like for example, are the in-game GUI graphics editable or will we be stuck with the standard ones? I'm perfectly fine with the normal Ace Attorney GUI, but I'm just curious.
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a wonderful day.

If you have an RSS feeder slezak, KanadaKid's site has an RSS feed, that's how I keep upto date with it ^^ Also, i'm sure if you know C++ it wouldn't be that hard to compile.. I managed to get all the way up to setting up the libraries in MSVC and I don't know a shred of C++.. admitedly I got stuck there, but nevermind :D

I just went to try that, and lo, Photoshop does not have pixelate and pixel resize options :beef:

Normal resizing will have to do, I guess :sadshoe: Curse you and your Paintshop Pro.

Sounds like a very solid and good project. Need to give a try on the source code (need to get SDL libs again).
Just looking at the screenshots made me restart my own PW "Case Maker" project i abandoned about 2+ months ago.

Hope to see a beta out soon.

I'm pretty sure he said you could change all the sound effects ingame, so if you wanted to record your own objection, you could. I think what ProscecutorZhang means is if he can shout objection into his mic in order to get it to appear in the game.. which i'm pretty sure won't be included. Think about it, he'd have to setup voice recognition, plus mic support into his player.. tooo much hassle.

But you couldn't just change the resource files (the image for the silhouettes, or the sound file for the objection)?

It is implied as a customization that doesn't necessarily need support on the editor, imo. Unless the case maker supports more than once case per project or you want to change attorneys mid-case, that is.

Voice recognization = hard. No, extremelly hard. Unless he finds a good open source library, i think it is an option we hardly will see. Sounds cool, yeah.
