When you find out someone you thought was a friend makes a hateful, bigoted, barbarian comment?

Here's what the person said.



Now, I'm an atheist and straight, so this doesn't affect me directly, but it does mean that if he had his way, my brother, my sister, and at least a third of my IRL friends would either be dead or interned.

Me and my other friends decided to ban him from the IRC channels we frequent, and have cut off contact with him.

Were we right in doing this?

Hate for no reason, or even for a reason, does not resolve anything and it had no positive effect.
Those words are hateful and as said illogical...

I come from a diverse, multicultural place. The fact is that wherever you go, bigotry, racism, and narrow-mindedness rear their ugly chimaeric heads and it's extremely difficult to escape. Huge rifts are caused because of this, and apart from religion (which sometimes goes hand in hand, and is ironically polarizing) it is one of the only things that prevent unification of the human race.

You shouldn't associate yourself with people who are outwardly disrespectful and ignorant to those with varying tastes - at the same time however you cannot deny being biased yourself if you are indeed in possession of your own biases. Not many can say that they are all completely open on any type of non-detrimental practice. It blurs the line with what we consider as our own "standards" at times. Many will look down on those that discriminate when they too are like that in their own ways. Almost everyone has some sort of bias.

It doesn't have to be concerned with ethnicity or nationality - look at people who are HIV positive. Many people will ignore them and treat them differently despite the fact that they know they can't be infected. It's a socially-adopted stigma, and a big issue with those who have sexually transmitted infections, whether or not it is their fault. It is seen as something to be ashamed of, and if the public is made aware then there is little to no acceptance. Pregnancy in the young is like this. The big fault tied into this is that many normal, non-pathological states (such as being a certain race or colour) is treated as such, thanks to the ignorance of the masses.

Some individuals are culturally moulded and aren't even aware that their discrimination is "wrong", once it is accepted by their families or societies. They're brought up this way, and ignorant or not it is how they were trained - they don't know any better. It doesn't make it any more correct, but much of the blame lies in the bigotry of our forefathers. It gets passed on from generation to generation and many just continue to live uninformed - that part is the fault of the current generation.

It's a huge problem and won't go away anytime soon, but we can all do our part to promote knowledge and awareness, closing the gap ever so slightly in the great divide that is aesthetics. How can you open the minds of someone who refuses the knowledge, though? Isn't that in itself forcing something upon someone, good intentions or not? The young shouldn't have to be manipulated or tricked into seeking knowledge, they should be taught to seek it for themselves. Ultimately this is what will evolve cultural and open thinking.

Wow, what an all-around asshat. Y'know, a person that whacked doesn't deserve any company, let alone your's. Leave him behind in his fog of intolerance and foolishness and see how well he gets around with THAT mentality.

Regardless of your opinions on his beliefs, two facts stand out from his statements: he is phenomenally poorly informed and incredibly short-sighted politically. Giving his opinions any kind of dignity at all is a waste of time. However, this topic is not concerned with destroying his argument, so I'll save the war-machine of logic for another time.

I knew people who were incredibly racist and homophobic back in school. I'll spare you the details. These people just so happened to be the people I hung out with at school, for better or for worse. The difference is that I knew they were a bunch of morons, but I liked them anyway, and vice-versa. The point was, I kept quiet about my own, considerably more moderate opinions and let them have their inappropriate humour and vent. (I think they scarred me mentally, but that's a story for another time.) As it turned out, they were just bored and most of them got over their racism and homophobia when they found something else to joke about mindlessly. I still remember one horrifying MSN discussion I had one day, though, but again I'll spare you the details. In that case as well, it was obvious he knew nothing about what he was talking about. The root cause of the problem is extreme idiocy, but I think everyone knew that one already. :P

This might be another one of those situations - that he isn't truly serious and if someone told him the truth he'd change his tune pretty damn fast, but it depends on how old he is. Either way, it boils down to this: can you stand to be around people that openly xenophobic, homophobic and downright moronic? If so, you have over-reacted. Otherwise, I see no problem with what you have done. It's important to remember that just because you associate with someone with certain beliefs doesn't mean you agree with them, which unfortunately is a common assumption many people make when ugly revelations like these rear their heads.

Tell your friend I find him insulting. One of my best friends is Muslim and the only reason everyone is hating on the muslim is because of crazy morons like Saddam and Osama. Islam really is a peaceful religion.

Also, another two of my friends are Lesbians and what the hell is he even talking about? no one encourages anyone to be gay, they are either born straight, or not.
