And here is my Charley Fanfic! Or the first chapter, at least. This fic is very fun to write. I tried to make it different, so it's from Charley's point of view. Because Charley is a plant, I have him referring to himself in third person, and tried to steer clear of using words and sentences, such as changing "Charley averted his eyes..." to "Charley looked the other way...” because, obviously, Charley doesn't have eyes. Oh, and if this chapter seems a little childishly written, understand I tried to make it that way. Since Charley's only a baby plant, I tried to make him sound like a child. As the chapters go on and Charley gets older, I'll make the fic more mature sounding as well. (Although I will keep a little of Charley's plant naïveté.)
Also, there seems to be quite a lot of Taurus-People on this site...
Title: Charley's Making Me
Pairings: Some minor Maya/Phoenix
Spoilers: For GS4, but they're small.
Summary: Charley's seen a lot during his life. An Ace Attorney story about the one character who’s seen it all.
Charley, when he was still in the nursery, was a happy plant. He was tiny, but he was a Cordyline Stricta, a plant that grows quite tall, so he wasn't very worried about his petite stature. Charley was so very proud of himself; a strong, healthy, cute little plant, and was so pleasant looking that the Florist's cashier put him right on top of the counter, and even tied one of her prettiest red ribbons from her hair on him. Charley would swell up with pride, and admittedly, show off, as every customer who came into the store and commented on how cute he was. Charley watched many a plant leave the store, and was confident that he would be taken to a lovely home to live out his long years. Patiently, he waited for a suitable home to be found for him.
Then, one day at the florist's, when Charley was still very small, a man came through the door. All the plants, including Charley, started showing of their very best petals, buds, and leaves, hoping they would get taken next. Charley himself made sure he as tall and good-looking as a little plant like him could, and anxiously studied the man who had come in.
He was a tall human, and smelled heavily of brewed coffee beans. Charley could smell the coffee, even from his counter spot! The man had tanned skin, a red shirt, and a grey vest with matching pants. His hair was a smoky color, and was very messy. However, he was very professional and important-looking, and Charley was hoping he could catch his eye. Suddenly, the man turned around slightly, allowing Charley to catch a glimpse of gold. It was tiny, but even Charley, though he was far away from the man, could tell it was a defense lawyer's badge. A lawyer! Charley became excited. Lawyer's usually had plants in their office, trying to make their usually dreary and grey place of work have a bit more color. Getting a home in a Lawyer's office, Prosecution or Defense, was on of the highest honors a plant could receive. Charley actually had an uncle who isn't owned by just a lawyer, but by a judge. Charley could still remember the day, in his babyhood, when his uncle was adopted by the kindly old judge with the beard. It was a proud day for Charley's family. Charley was suddenly hit with a revelation. Maybe this man knew about how good a plant Charley's uncle was from the judge, and came to the Florist's right away to get a family member of his uncle?!
But the coffee lawyer wasn't coming towards him; he was very casually looking at the rose section.
If Charley could've pouted, he would. Roses weren't very good office plants, they died very quickly. Mostly, people got roses for loved ones. So maybe the coffee-lawyer wasn't looking for an office plant. How depressing. Nonetheless, he continued watching the lawyer.
Then, the florist's cashier came out of the back room. Her eyes instantly landed on the lawyer's badge, just like all the plants had. She smiled widely and walked over to him. They started talking, and Charley strained to listen.
"Can I help you, sir?" The cashier smiled wider and fluttered her eyelashes.
"...I'm looking for a gift for a kitten. Beautiful, but she just refuses my charms....I don't mind, though. I was hoping to find a plant that could spark something..." The lawyer took a long sip of his coffee. "Romance is the fuel that keeps love burning hot, you know...just like my coffee." Another long sip.
"Well....uh...." The florist looked confused. Then, she brightened up. "Well, if you're looking for something for a woman, may I suggest some roses? They're a classic, and all women love to get them..." She smiled questionably, hoping that he had noticed her hint.
"Hmmmm.....no." The cashier's face fell. The lawyer started to explain. "Roses die too quickly, like a fling. I want something more long lasting.....to show her I mean more than just a fling, get it?" The lawyer winked at the cashier.
"Oh! Well, how about a potted plant? They last very long, and they grow very large." Charley suddenly became extremely excited. HE was a potted plant! Could this be it?! Could he have finally found a home?!
"Hmmmm...." He finished the rest of his paper cup coffee in one final gulp. "Over the counter coffee. Alright, but nothing compared to my special Diego brewed coffee, # 103." The cashier raised her eyebrows. Diego, that was his name, Charley noted. Charley would have to remember that.
"So...uh.....Sir? What would you like to buy.....?" The poor cashier tried unsuccessfully to get Diego back on the buying track. The lawyer sighed.
"I suppose I should actually get around to buying something, shouldn't I?"
The worker perked up. "Right away, sir!" She started to scan the shop, when she noticed Charley sitting on the counter. Grinning, she came over to him and picked him up from his spot. She turned to Diego.
"This is a Cordyline Stricta, sir. While it's small right now, it can actually grow to startlingly heights, so I think it’ll be perfect for you. It's from the plant family Agavaceae, and..." The worker started to drabble about random facts of Charley's type of plant, as she usually did. But Charley wasn't listening to anything she said. He was staring at the lawyer, who, in a strange way, seemed to be staring back at Charley. The lawyer spoke up.
"I'll take him," said the lawyer, right in the middle of the girl's chatting. The girl shut up and smiled widely.
"Wonderful! Come to the cashier and we'll ring him up!" She handed Charley to Diego and trotted back to the counter, as Diego coolly followed with Charley under one arm. Charley was in fits. A home! And not just any home, a lawyer's home!
As Diego placed Charley on the counter so he could pay the cashier, Charley became lost in thought. Oh, how Charley wished his family could see him! But all of Charley's family was long gone; His brothers and sisters, who had started off from the same seeds, were sold months ago. Suddenly, Charley's new, strange smelling owner spoke up.
"Does this little guy have a name?"
"Most of the employees here like to call him Charley." answered the girl, as she took off Charley's precious bow and handed him to Diego.
