What Do You Think Of Girl Gamers?Topic%20Title

With the release of the Wii and DS, girls have become more accepted as gamers and gaming is more 'cool'. However, this has created the (quite sexist) image of girl gamers being only casual gamers. You know the type: they call Nintendogs "Nintendo dogs" and are into really easy and slightly crappy games.
But I've been a dedicated gamer for years and this really infuriates me. Is there anyone else who agrees with me?

and is this the right place for this topic...?

Oh most certainly.

I've played games for as long as I can remember and there's nothing cute and fluffy here. <_<
I tend to know more about games than everyone I know, including the guys.
And I take any chance I get to tell anyone about them. In fact, many of my female friends asks me about them, they want to know what kind of games I like, and what makes me so into them.

You know, now that I think about it...

I did happen to notice that there are lots of games for the DS that look REALLY stupid, and seem to be targeted toward girls. And that's just dumb. I mean, there goes half of your possible buyers just from gender, and maybe one fourth of these girls might consider buying them. So yeah, I think you're right.

And I myself am a hardcore gamer. I prefer to play competitive games, or games that have actual difficulty and a deep, thought-out plot. You know, something that ENTERTAINS people longer than an hour.

In short, I'm with you guys. :minuki:

Truth.

There are many stupid games out there.
I myself prefer adventure games. They let you think and you actually have to do something, not just run around and shot at anything that moves.

Though I like some shooters too. ^^
Bring on the action.

Hmm, now that you mention it, a lot of the "lolwtf" DS games are targeted towards girls. But then again, most of them are targeted towards girls 12 and below so it's not really a big deal xD

On a more serious note, game companies don't really mean to discriminate, it's just that if you break it down, most of their sales come from males. You have to take into consideration that they have an audience that they want to please. An audience that would rake in more money, and sadly, that's not us. Recently though, there have been games that feature females as the lead character, such as Valkyrie Profile or Xenosaga. But that still doesn't necessarily mean those games were aimed at females, it just acts as more fan service (especially in games wherein the 3D model changes with the armor) What I really want is a game wherein you could choose between male and female and have a different plot line for both. But then again, that means more effort on the part of the game designer, and that needs more money. Here again comes the problem. If they know it wouldn't attract sufficient attention, then they won't do it.

That's...Not entirely true. Girls can't keep their hands off of Sims. That project is huge. :shy:

I figured the general status of girl gamers are in the RPG market, ignoring simulation/renai games.

o_O

A lot of girls I know are either: not interested/don't play, or are into action, adventure games.

And the Imagine series by Ubisoft should just... just...I mean. I looked at videos of one of the games. Imagine: Figure Skating was in fact a Japanese anime-styled figure skating game set in similar style to the Ouendan series (but with say, added girl dating sim-esque features). Ubisoft's localization changed everything, including a misleading title and box art.

Several of their other games are copies of elements in other simulation games. (the baby game was just a bad attempt at changing the Petz series)

I LOVE games, though I'm mostly obsessed with RPG games (and I'm guilty of owning a LOT of Sims games). I dunno, it really pisses me off when I see something like "ohemgee Hanna Montana on DS" or when they make a video game out of a movie (like what they're doing to poor lil Wall-e right now). Yea I know it's for younger girls but I dunno, I get angry at things I'm not supposed to all the time <_<
I think the video game company should just stick to most of the games it's already doing and I'm not talking about that stupid "imagine [insert dream career here]" stuff. I mean that they should stick to things that will appeal to a broader audience cuz of course they're gonna get more money outta that. I've noticed that usually, having a male lead tends to make the game enjoyable (at least for me) UNLESS they can pull off a female lead without having her there only for men to drool at her (FFX-2, anyone?) Like, in the Trauma Center series, I loved seeing a male as the main character (I dunno why, but he just seemed easier to relate to) but I also liked how New Blood managed to pull off letting you choose whether you wanna be the girl or guy doctor... though it didn't matter much to me. (However, I am pretty psyched about Lightning in FFXIII cuz she seems so much like Cloud... I can't wait 8D)................................................. someone help me please, I'm getting FEROCIOUSLY off-topic.

But overall,........ um, overall, er............... shoot there goes my brain. Um, I'm a gamer....... I'm a girl....... and maybe that's all I needed to say........... *woosh*

The imagine series is okay. Then again, I'm importing all the stuff so I barely have any English on the DS aside from Castlevania and Zelda.

I've had enough trial and error. I can afford a DS Lite at this point and I'll probably buy one in the next week. Games are getting horrible though. I'm just going to buy an N5 and run with everything I can. :shy:

I could pass as a hardcore girl gamer, if you exclude quite a few of the games I play and don't notice how my "breasts" aren't actually breasts at all.

I guess I could consider myself a hardcore gamer. I grew up with videogames all my life. Our family had an NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, (no N64 though, we didn't have the money at time :<) PS1, PS2, Sega Dreamcast, Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, and now the Wii and a DS.

And this is coming from a family where I'm the youngest of four daughters, no brothers. And my dad can't play videogames to save his life. (When playing the first Mario bros., all my dad would do is have Mario run back and forth or fall down a hole. "Hey look at me! Whee! I'm jumping!") But my mom was able to beat Crash Bandicoot and Spyro lol.

I used to always sneak into my sister's room when she was gone and play on her SNES. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Super Mario World, StarFox, you name it.

Actually, when Zelda first came out for the NES, my mom was the one who picked it up because the name reminded her of the actress Zelda Schapiro lol.

Plus, my group of friends are all hardcore gamers. They're more into the survival horror/shooting genre though or the SIMs. I'm more of an RPG/Action-Adventure type, or the occasional quirky games like Katamari Damacy, WarioWare or Parappa the Rapper. But most of the time we'll be playing Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Prince of Persia, The Suffering, etc. I personally find the SIMs boring.

So yes, I am a girl who loves her vidya gaems, because simply, they're fun. I like them for the challenge aspect, and the creative.

I do regret not ever having an N64 though, because I missed out on so many awesome games :<

@LySs: Zelda and Prince of Persia are great. ^^

I've got the very first PoP for Atari but I've never made it past the third level since the Atari joystick makes it near to impossible to do a long jump, which often ends with instant death.
*sigh*
But I still like it.

And yes, N64 is awesome. Pity you don't have one. :C

I don't know how many times I've played Ocarina of Time on mine.

You know, it's never too late to get one. They have ones on E-bay for 30/40 bucks with all the parts in working condition and even a game or two from time to time. The only problem is that the good Nintendo games like LoZ: Ocarina of Time and even Starfox can get price and most have already been added to the Wii's virtual console already. Of course, there are several rare gems (usual not made by Nintendo) that's N64 only and aren't likely to see Virtual Console release. If you ever have the cash to spare, it could a good time investment for you. But, then again, I grew up on the N64 and still use it to this day, so I'm a little biased... :yuusaku:

No, but like Zelda, Mario, Super Smash Bros.-series, Kirby, Phoenix Wright, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, adventure games, RPG games, simulation games (I liked the older sims games, not the Sims 2) puzzle games and others.
EDIT: I don't like karaoke-games or newer Sims games, I hate those.

so far no, but that's maybe because I never had a ps2. But I ENJOY gaming. I prefer RPG/Adventure, or anything with a good story, really ^^; I'm not really interested with the ones that's focused in violence, though.

Now that I have a DS, I *might* become a hardcore gamer. 8D I guess now I have to try to be not too hardcore.

Well I dunno if I'm HARDCORE because that seems to sound like I need at least two current gen home consoles and need to like FPS's. But I am not casual. I have every Nintendo home console since the SNES and have had all Nintendo portibles since GBC(technicly my sister has a Gameboy pocket but I didnt feel the need to mention it even though I just did).
I have most of the best for each system excluding SNES(most the time I just got ports because SNES games are so hard to find) and Wii(I just got it this Christmas and this happens to be the year I have no money).
I may not like FPS but I will play a platformer like crazy if I get a new one.

Oh but I guess I add to the sterotype by not being very good and loving my DS to death.
But I've never bought a single game on that list! It took skill too because my sister kept hounding me to buy Cooking Mama. I got Pheonix Wright insted. Now she wont stop hounding me to get Mario Kart Wii like I have money. Screw that if I had money I'd get Okami.

I guess you could call me a "hardcore girl gamer." Even though I don't play FPS or anything like that. ^_^;; But, I've always had videogames in my life. Starting with the Colecovision when I was a kid (my neighbors had an Atari that I would go play as well. XD) to having a PS3, Xbox360 and a Wii now. (As well as my DS and my PSP. ^_^;;) When I was in college, fighting games were my favorite genre. I adored Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. (I even managed to get a private tour of Midway games because I was a "rare female gamer.") I still like fighting games, although now I'm more into RPG's. ^_^ And Phoenix Wright, of course. XD

That list of girl games is crap, though. >_<

I've had one very dedicated gaming girlfriend in my life and I have to admit, it was finally great not to have to make excuses and explain the time and month I spent on videogames compared to the other gfs I've had... because she to an extent was right in there doing her own similar thing.

Now part of me hopes the next girl I happen to be with is exactly the same way :franny:

I'm much more of a casual gamer, and I'm not ashamed to say I like some girly games. I honestly enjoy playing The Sims, Nintendogs, Harvest Moon and Cooking Mama. I'm more open to a variety of games, I like the occasional shooter, like Halo, and a lot of quirky games, such as Katamari. I also enjoy puzzle/detective games like Phoenix Wright, Nancy Drew, and Proffessor Layton. I've pretty much grown up with video games due to the fact that my mom loves them (she has her own DS) and I'm also fond of some RPG's, though I can be a bit picky with them. I won't play them if they bore me.

So I guess I'm not really a 'hardcore' gamer, but that doesn't really change anything, does it? :P I don't try to judge people on what games they play, everyone has different interests, so if you like playing Catz and you're a teenage guy, whatever, it's just a game. That's all. :3

Girl gamer. cha.
I enjoyed one of the Sims game that is more like a RPG than the typical sims.
and cooking mama is a nice in between game for me.
but you wont find nintendogs or anything like in my arsenal.
Seeing my 8 year old cousins with their DSs playing those silly animal games doesnt really bother me. I mean, those kinds are aimed at younger.
So yeah they have more of a female appeal, It doesnt anger me because younger generations are playing those, and will grow up to be like us.
Bascially you have to take in the age those games are directed at. Not us, so why get mad?

Played one with my cousin, was intrigued, and kept playing them. The newer titles are kind of weak, I think they're focusing too much on graphics as opposed to puzzles. Blackmoor Manor had to be my favorite, it got kind of creepy at times and had some good puzzlers. :3 I'll probably buy the new one and see how it is.

On the topic of pet games, I bought nintendogs a few years ago, and it was fun to have a sort of pet to play with since it wasn't possible for us to get a dog, and I was really into that sort of thing. I don't really play it any more, but if I ever feel like chucking a virtual frisbee I might use it. I think the whole interactive pet franchise has gone a bit over the top, but to each their own.

YES
I totally agree. Blackmoor Manor was the first Nancy Drew game I picked up and it scared the hell outta me, but I loved it. The new games... meh, they seem to be more about Nancy traveliing the world (But I want the Venice one cuz it'll help me brush up on my Italian =D)

And to stay on topic... out of that list, I own Mario games and Final Fantasy cuz they're awesome. But anyways, if I didn't have 2 younger bros I probably wouldn't have gotten into games, cuz it was their obsession over Mario and Sonic stuff that made me curious as to why they loved it. I hated video games at first cuz I thought they were all like mario kart (That was the ONLY game we had for like a year on the N64 till we discovered more games) XD I didn't know there were games with stories and other good stuff (though I still do like Mario Kart, just saying). I'm trying to brainwash my 16-year old cousin into games and it's slowly working (she loves disney, so I give her Kingdom Hearts. She wants to try a Final Fantasy game, I give her FFX, which was amazing for me) and soon I'll work my way up to giving her PW *muhahhahaha*--mmkay I'm done now.

Yay for life stories~

I'm much more of a casual gamer, and I'm not ashamed to say I like some girly games. I honestly enjoy playing The Sims, Nintendogs, Harvest Moon and Cooking Mama.

But then again, I'd really consider those games gender-neutral, more than anything else. The Sims and Harvest Moon, especially, since you can choose between male and female. Nintendogs is a game that's marketed towards everyone who likes pets, not only females. But yeah, Cooking Mama might've been aimed towards females, but I know a guy who managed to gold all the dishes xD

If you think games aimed for female audiences are bad, perhaps you've forgotten a lot of the male games out there...I don't feel like listing them because I feel embarrassed even MENTIONING the titles..

P.S.- It's a travesty to see Cooking Mama at #4 on that list. :chinami:

What? No it isn't. It's a cooking game. I know the girls looking for boys comment was almost a joke but if a girl can't follow directions, they can't cook. If they can't handle this much, they have no business being interested in boys.

GG....No RE. :lana:

Ahahaha, ur funny.

Just because a person can't play Cooking Mama well doesn't mean they fail at life. It's pompous to think so, and FYI, it's only a game. It doesn't predict your future, and sadly, you can't write in a College application, "I finished Cooking Mama 1 and 2". Now what on earth does that have to do with true cooking skills? That statement you made is so fallacious, it's insulting. A friend of mine's taking up HRIM right now, and surprise surprise, she burn half the food in Cooking Mama. But so what? She's a good cook, better than most people I know. Uuugh. Why am I even bothering to argue with you, knowing that you're just going to quote my statements one-by-one and reply with random sentences that make no sense.
