Since the closure of the Mafia game subforum, there has been a pressing concern.

Currently, the archived CR Mafia Round II-V discussion thread is in danger of being deleted due to its placement in the Big Berry Circus. However, during it's short time in Exposé Park, where I was given moderator powers, I had locked the thread, believing it to be safe and no longer in need of bumping. Now that it has been returned to BBC, outside of my control, and not unlocked, it is slowly drifting towards deletion.

The feedback for Round IV of CR Mafia was so positive that a comic project has been started to retell its story. Unfortunately, this project mines the archived thread for information, and cannot afford to lose it. While we archive past gameplay threads off-site, we do not preserve the "Dead Threads" where post-game discussion most often takes place.

As such, until it was locked, we have regularly bumped the archived dead thread so it may continue to be read and reviewed for our purposes.

While the community of CR Mafia game players have been more than willing to wait out the arrival of a solution to the overcrowding problem that led to the momentary creation of Exposé Park, I doubt they will be so forgiving if a beloved memory and project is allowed to disappear due to administrator/moderator inattentiveness. For now, all we can do is repeatedly report the dying thread's posts and hope that it will bumped or unlocked before it is deleted automatically.

Please, Mods? This is important to us. It's a very popular game! And it also brings in new people!

I've already PMed Croik about the Archived Dead Threads, myself. Honestly, while a subforum would be nice, I don't care if it's ever made or if that time comes soon at the moment. XD I was most concerned about the locked thread.

The old dead threads are the other half to the archived living threads, and there are indeed a lot of memories and ideas in them, related to the IV comic or not. [I enjoy rereading the dead threads from rounds past, and do so fairly often.]

So yes, please unlock our thread? I know some mods/admins are probably sick of hearing from/about us, but we just want to make sure we can keep this one particular thread around. ;_;

I don't mean to sound like a rebel leader, but are we going to suffer a death by committee here? The archived CR Mafia thread is still locked and a mere twelve threads away from the bottom of the BBC.

As a non-participent in the Mafia game, I would prefer the Mafia game to have it's own subfolder, so that I can locate those threads that I do want to participate in, more easily.

If you guys really want to run the mafia game in the way you want to run it, you might be better off taking it to a forum of your own. The format of the BBC is not going to change, and I'm not keen on creating a subforum for every fad that comes along. I'm not even sure I'm familiar enough with the mafia game that I understand why certain threads deserve to be archived forever. This is a site for Phoenix Wright after all, not forum games.

What I can offer is a "graveyard" section where locked threads could be filed away without fear of deletion (that could be used for the whole forum) but it would have to be somewhat selective.

*Sigh* That is what I had suggested before, and no one would listen to me. They were so.... tunnel-vision focused on having a subforum instead.

I think so that new players will learn how the game is played, "watch and learn" style.

Also, thank you, Croik. :D

Ah! But then it wouldn't be Court Records Mafia, would it? It only works the way it works because it's here. We already had a small exodus of players that created a spin-off Mafia game on another new forum specially for it, and whilst it's certainly passable, the magic just isn't there. The Real Thing (TM) is right here. :)

It MUST be hosted here, and we appreciate your co-operation in making that possible and as convenient for us Game Masters and the players as it is for your admin team. ^_^

And hey, if you're so clueless about the game, why not play Round VII and be clueless no longer? ;)

EDIT: Also, something that lasts six months on an internet forum is hardly a "fad" any longer, is it? ;D

The archived dead thread in question is simply being held on to until the complete of the associated comic project. We have never bothered to archive our dead threads, and once we are done with this one it will be allowed to be deleted. Similarly, because we archive our concluded gameplay threads, we can allow them to be deleted once they have been completely recorded. In the end, the total footprint on the database should even out, as new game threads are created and old threads are locked and allowed deletion.

The real concern here is the turnaround time for archiving and research versus the low deletion threshold in the BBC. Due to the very active nature of the subforum, inactive threads are constantly in danger of being deleted. What you have rejected is but one of two solutions: making the game threads in question permanent.

The other real concern is the sheer volume of players that these particular games have drawn. With up to 65 people wanting to play Mafia games, there is an issue of crowding. With only one active Mafia game, we can cater to only so many players. The obvious solution to this would be to create new Mafia games to run concurrently, but this exacerbates the problem presented by the limited breathing space we have in regards to archiving and locking/deletion for concluded/old threads.

What I would like to suggest now is the second solution: create a subforum, similar to the BBC, that contains a certain threshold for inactive threads. This would allow us to trash our old threads similar to the BBC's life-cycle, while possessing control over the space and flow of the threads in that section. This will allow us the benefits of population control and gameplay variety while not necessarily crowding out other BBC games, or ourselves, in the process.

Moving to a new forum would be inconvenient for many, if not all, players. For one, Court Records is a very familiar environment to most of the established community. Secondly, the Ace Attorney theme grants a second level of community interaction and common interest that would not be available on a separate forum that lacks the features and people that Court Records has. Third, the Mafia game has in fact drawn in new forum members, but as many of them discover, I'm sure, there is more to this wonderful and active forum than a simple game. This forum is rife with activity and discussion on all number of interesting topics. Cutting off access to that is an injury to the game's players and to the forum itself, as both have formed a symbiotic relationship of sorts.

Again, we are not asking to have our threads archived forever - we do that well enough on our own. We are asking for assistance with regards to managing their conduct here on Court Records.

I was told to come add my two cents.
You guys got change for a dollar?

Yes, this is a forum game we are talking about, but this is a special forum game.
This game was born from the Phoenix Wright games. It has evolved into something new and never done before anywhere.
It has brought new members not only to Court Records, but also to the games that we spend out time talking about on here.

I see the CR Mafia games not just as a forum game... but as an actual deep rooted part of CR's attraction.
We have seen what can come of trying to spread to other forums that are just for Mafia.
VG mafia has been dead for a long time now, I know, I check it often.

I like the idea of a graveyard section though.
And if it's not to much to ask, would there be a chance of keeping a mafia section in it?

While I'm saying something like that is actually just the thing we need I also want to add why I think having the sub forum would still be better.

Right now we have topics that we are trying to keep alive, be it for archiving purposes (some people are actually copying word for word each game and respective dead thread) or so that some projects that require the info in them can be finished.
And because of this the BBC is like a flower under a big tree.
The games are being choked out. They can't get the sun.
We requested the sub forum so that we could transplant the tree to a place still in it's natural habitat, in soil that it can thrive and grow in, while letting the flowers be able to get the sun's light and be able to grow again.

Like I said before, the spin off is pretty much dead. If we move to a new forum CR Mafia might die too, and it still has quite a bit of life left in it.
Giving us the sub forum not only let's the BBC have a break from being smothered in Mafia topics that are still needed, but also adds a new attraction to the CR lineup!
We have places to talk about who your favorite AA characters are, we have places for artwork (and also varying styles), we have places for music, for games, for random chaos, just about anything you want is here.
And CR Mafia has become one of those things. It has become a big part of CR, and all we ask is to be able to have a space set aside for it where it can continue to do as it has while still being courteous to the other attractions here at CR.

I have said allot, and I know I went over stuff a few times there... that's what happens when I start typing and let my heart guide me.
I truly love to play this game. I may go through bad times, and even down right awful times, but in the end I enjoy it. Just like CR. We have our ups and downs here, but we still come here, we still do what we can to make this place the best it can be, because we love it here. It's "home".

This is something we want to do to better what some of us call our "home".
Just like CR Mafia changes each round, fixing this problem and that, we want to do something to change our impact on the BBC. And that's why we ask for this.

...
You can keep the change.

Speak for your flipping selves. :/ VGM is not dead, just on haitus; and I can hardly call 30 members dead anyways. As for the 'Magic', we're new, and in the end the reason we moved was because we wanted a simpler game. We've gotten what we wanted, and we're quite happy about it thank you.

Dude, to me a living forum is one that gets posts.
I have been watching VG multiple times a day for quite some time now.
I haven't seen something new in a loooong time, and the last thing broke another long silence.
And it looks like things just came to a grinding halt there.
I'd be surprised how many people out side of CR you'd get out of your member base for the next game when it does come back.

You guys even tried to have smaller forum games over there to pass the time and they never got touched.

I understand your quest for something simpler, and I did come try a couple of rounds and they were a little fun.
But something was missing for me. That magic that Velo was talking about.
And I don't want this to be viewed as my looking down on VG, there are people who have said they prefer VG Mafia over CR Mafia, but for me nothing beats CR Mafia.

Right now there is an entire forum with no activity in weeks though... that's not a good thing.

Aya, you two, stop arguing about a game that isn't even on this board here. That's not the point of this thread. Croik's going to read all these good arguments and then see you two squabbling and then be like "whyamIevenbotheringtoread."

Anyway, I appreciate your patience with us in unlocking the thread, Croik. I'd also like to add my name to the list of people asking you to consider what's been said. Thanks for your attention on the subject!

I'm glad you guys are enjoying yourselves here on Court Records, but the bottom line is I don't particularly *want* to encourage people to come here just to play the mafia game. This is an Ace Attorney forum. I certainly won't try to stop people from doing and talking about other things, but ultimately those things are of a lesser priority to me and the site. The mafia game is not an official CR game and I don't want to give people the impression that it is by sectioning it. I'm sorry, it's just not going not happen. I would say the same thing if people were asking for a Final Fantasy section, or a knitting section, or anything else that isn't related to AA.

But, like I said before, since the main issue (as it was first addressed to me) is about inactive threads in the BBC getting deleted after so long, that's easily solved with an archive forum. You should be able to see it now in the Non-Phoenix Wright area (Eagle River). If there are mafia threads in the BBC that have finished but you don't want to see get axed, all you have to do is report it with a note, and the mods will move it to a "safe" place. There are some threads around CR that could use the same treatment already anyway, which are being moved.

I'm sure not all of you will be satisfied with that solution, but that's all I'm prepared to do for the mafia game at the moment.

If you are willing to provide temporary archiving services for the game, that is good too. It eases some of the stress for our off-site archivists, though I wonder if you're willing to make this a permanent solution in regards to the mafia game in particular? That is, do you expect us to continue archiving our gameplay off-site and sending you a note when the archived threads are completely logged?

As this is a solution that benefits CR in general as well, I support it.

Although it doesn't address the issue of general crowding that would be encountered by concurrent Mafia games, for the time being it will serve well for supporting current rounds. We will sort out any further issues that arise from new games populating the BBC section until further notice.

The Eagle River archive section is there for the whole site, and it's not like threads in there are going to expand, so I'm not anticipating ever having to delete things out of it. I think you can consider it a fairly permanent archive.

Thank you Croik for providing us a way to protect these topics.
And while the crowding may not be fully solved, at least this will cut down of the number of topics that are crowding the BBC for archival purposes.

While this may not be the solution that everyone wanted it's what we got. And I for one am happy that we now do have a way to protect things.

There's one problem left unsolved, but fortunately it should be really easy to fix.

Just so we can avoid the problem of Mafia or any other large game requiring multiple threads choking out all the other game threads, you could increase the number of topics displayed per page, which should make people less willing to bump a topic just to stop it being deleted.

Somehow I think the mafia games would be the least of phoenix's worries if he ever saw a forum like this. :P

And hey, an archive section! Not a bad thing to have in general anyways, and not just because it hleps the mafia archiving. Could always put notable "noodle incident" type topics there to just send someone to if a new person ever come by wondering what the joke is.

"Hey what are you all talking bout with Phoenix and Jello?"

*points to thread in eagle river with a topic talking about his office being made of Jello*

Gonna be interesting to see what other developments, if any, come from all this. I can see where Croik is coming from with not wanting an extra subforum just for forum game that came about a few months ago. If a few years go by though and these things become front page contests with all the mods involved, maybe it could get one, but for now let's see how we can handle things. :P

(although that would be freaking awesome if it did get that popular eventually :D )

Yeah, there remains an open invitation to all moderators and admins to participate in future rounds of "Court Records Mafia." In fact, it's open to any and all forumgoers who want to participate - always has been, always will.
