Chapter 1
He didn't know what to do. How to tell her. He loved how she whipped him. How her hair would shine brightly in the sunlight. How she let him draw her.

Larry knew this was extremely risky. Afterall, she didn't seem to like anyone. He had to find a way to get close. Some ideas formed in his head. Maybe he could ask Nick for help. He decided against it. Nick was too much of a goody two-shoes and he'd probably stop him anyway. Edgy would probably side with Nick, so asking him was out.
There was, however, one way in which he could talk to her. He would witness a murder. And he couldn't stage one. He had to see a real murder. But how? There was certainly no way to predict when the next one would be. Then, he heard a scream. A horrible, horrible scream that was sure to scar him for life...again. He ran in the direction he heard the scream from. When he arrived, a woman was on the ground, pleading for her life and an oddly familiar man pointed a gun at her.
Larry didn't know what to do. On one hand, someone could die. On the other hand, that was what he wanted. It would ensure he saw his love. Unfortunately, he couldn't control himself. He screamed just before the man pulled the trigger and killed her. Then, the man turned around and aimed the gun at him.
"Don't move!" the man said. The voice was all too familiar.
"Nick?" Larry asked. "What are you doing?"
Nick put his finger on the trigger, and that was all Larry saw before he fainted.

Oh well, just one thing, you can organize it more, it's great so far.

Chapter 2
Larry woke up in a hospital. He wasn't sure how he had gotten there.
"Larry! Are you alright?"
"Who's asking?" Larry respoded. That's when he realized it was Iris. She must've come to check on him.
"Larry...It's Feenie."
"What about him?"
"He's being accused of murder!" Larry saw how this hurt Iris. He didn't know how to tell her Nick did it for sure. "He told me to bring you to the detention center so he could ask you some questions." Larry decided he had to see him anyway. Nick was the last person he'd expect to see kill someone, but it was unmistakeably him. There was no way he was innocent.

Phoenix was in the detention center. How did this happen? He was only sitting around at home when he was arrested. Phoenix was glad Trucy was gone. Seeing that would've killed her. He wished Apollo was around so he could defend him again, but he was gone, too. They were with their mother, catching up on old times. He couldn't call him away.
"Wright." The voice interrupted his thoughts. He stared blankly at Edgeworth.
"Edgeworth? What are you doing here?" Phoenix asked.
"I am here...To warn you.
"Warn me?"
"There is a mountain of evidence against you, and a witness who clearly saw you kill her."
"Thanks for the warning," Phoenix said monotonously. Edgeworth started to leave. "Wait!" Edgeworth stopped. "Do you think I'm guilty?"
Edgeworth paused before answering. Phoenix felt himself sweat. "I don't think so. In fact, I'd offer to be your attorney. However, I can't.
"Why not?"
"I will be the prosecutor for this case." Phoenix hadn't even seen Edgeworth for seven years and now he's not even on his side. It was all Phoenix could do to stop himself from freaking out. "I'm sorry. I wouldn't have taken this case unless I was the very last prosecutor available. I told Gumshoe to visit and tell you every thing about this case."
"Gumshoe?" Phoenix hasn't seen him in a long time. "Edgeworth. Before you leave, where were you for all these years?"
"Studying abroad. See you in court tomorrow, Wright." Edgeworth left, leaving Phoenix alone in his thoughts.

Chapter 3
Larry ran to the detention center. He was sure Nick was guilty, and he had to see him face-to-face. When he got there, Nick was alone, looking miserable. It was what Larry thought he deserved. Nick looked up at Larry.
"L-Larry?" he asked, looking rediculous in his hobo clothes. Larry stifled a laugh. It had been a long time. He went back to being serious.
"Nick. How could you?" Larry asked.
"How could I what?"
"Don't play games with me. How could you kill that woman?"
"Kill who?"
"I didn't know her. Anyway, you pointed a gun at me! You deserve to be behind bars!"
"Don't be so over dramatic, Larry."
"?"
"I didn't kill anyone."
"But I saw you!"
"...So, you're the witness."
"Yes I am!"
"...Larry, I didn't do anything. Could you tell me what happened?"
"No, Nick. I'm the only witness. I can't," Larry explained, angry that Nick had the audacity to lie right to his face. Nick saw that look in Larry's eye.
"I guess I'll find out tomorrow, then. Sorry for whatever you think you saw." Nick walked out of there. He was in for questioning. Larry stalked away.

Edgeworth was in his office working on Wright's case. As he did, he began to doubt his innocence. There was just no way out of this. Then, he heard a knock at his door.
"Come in," Edgeworth said.
"Edgeworth."
"Wright, I thought you were in detention."
"Well, I escaped...To kill you." Edgeworth was suddenly aware of the gun pointing at him just before he was shot. He heard a scream, but it wasn't him. Edgeworth passed out.

Larry was there when Nick went to Edgy's office. Seeing how suspicious this was, he followed him there. He saw Edgy get shot, and he screamed. Nick turned arund and aimed the gun at him...again.
"N-Nick," he stuttered. "How did you escape?" Larry was determined not to pass out, forcing himself to stand on his trembling knees.
"Easily," was the response Larry got just before Nick knocked him out.

Chapter 4
Edgeworth woke up in the hospital. He realized from the scar on his chest, he was shot there and they performed surgery on him. Since he was alive, it was successful. That's when a bailiff entered.
"Mr. Edgeworth. I was sent to know how you were doing."
"I'm fine. Who sent you?"
"The judge. He was concerned that you are missing the trial.
"What?! I'm missing it?!" Edgeworth asked, getting up. "Take me there!"
"B-But sir..."
"Do it!" he snapped. Edgeworth couldn't let Wright get away.
"We'll postpone the trial..."
"No, you won't! I'm going!" Edgeworth grimaced in pain as he ran to the courtroom.

"L-Larry...What happened to Edgeworth. He's usually early."
"As if you don't know!" Larry snapped. Nick was getting on his nerves. "You escaped and shot him!
"W-W-WHAAAT?!"
"You shot Edgy man. I hope you have a good lawyer."
"I'll be defending myself," Nick said. "And I promose you, I'll..."
"You'll defend yourself? In a hobo outfit?"
"..." Nick threw off his hobo clothes to reveal his familiar blue suit with his attorney's badge pinned to it. His hair was longer than usual, but still spiky. This was the man who killed that girl and who probably killed Edgeworth. "The trial's about to start." Nick walked into the courtroom.

"Court is now in session! Is the defense ready?" the judge asked.
"T-The defense is ready, Your Honor."
"Are you sure, Mr. Wright? You don't sound ready."
"Forgive me, Your Honor. This is my first time back in court since re-taking the bar exam, and I'm being accused of murder. I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Phoenix replied.
"Okay, then. Is the prosecution ready?"
... ... ... ... ...
"Well, it seems the prosecution's not here. I guess that means they're not prepared, and are too embarrassed to show up."
(Should I say something? I want to be declared innocent, but the judge needs to know the truth.) "It's not that he isn't ready, Your Honor. He's been shot."
"What?! Who shot him?!"
"..."
"Nick did, Your Honor!" Larry blurted.
"WHAT?! Is this true, Mr. Wright?!"
"...It doesn't matter what I say. If I say no, you won't believe me. If I say yes, you'll believe me. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation on my part."
"...Bailiff! Check up on Edgeworth! Nobody's allowed to leave until Mr. Edgeworth gets here!"

Chapter 4
There was a still silence in the court as everyone waited for what felt like an eternity. Finally, the judge spoke.
"It's obvious Mr. Edgeworth can't make it. Therefore, I am inclined to postpone the trial until ten o'clock tomorrow. Court is adjourned."
"Objection!" Edgeworth shouted as he burst through the doors of the courtroom. "Do you really think that lowly of me?" He grinned. Bursting through the door was something he always wanted to do. It almost made all the pain he felt worthwhile. Everyone in the courtroom seemed to be awed into silence. The judge cleared his throat before saying, "Very well. Let's get this trial underway. You may call your first witness."
"The prosecution calls Detective Dick Gumshoe to the stand." The familiar, grizzly detective who finally had a beard took the stand. "State your name and occupation, please."
"Detective Dick Gumshoe, sir. I'm a detective!" Gumshoe said as jollily as ever.
"Testify as to why this defendant is guilty."
"Yes, sir!"
"First of all, his fingerprints were all over the murder weapon. Secondly, his clothes he was wearing were found in his house and were bloody. And we have a decisive witness, pal. There's no way Mr. Wright is innocent." Phoenix hung on every word of the testimony, and the bloody clothes and gun were submitted into evidence.
"Well, with proof like that, I'm inclined to hand down the guilty verdict right now."
"B-but, I didn't do my cross-examination yet!" Phoenix yelled. He hasn't been this nervous since his very first case, and not this frantic since Maya was kidnapped by DeKiller.
"Very well, Mr. Wright. Your cross-examination."
"Let's start with the fingerprints, shall we? We all know that never proves who's guilty. In fact, they almost prove someone's innocence!"
"Now you're making stuff up, pal."
"Yeah, Wright. I didn't think you would sink so low."
(Edgeworth's gone cold. Is he...mad at me?)
"A-anyway, th-the victim was this girl, am I right?"
"Um...Yeah..." Gumshoe responded, wondering what that had to do with anything.
"She was petite."
"So?"
"So, how was the bullet angled?"
"Um...straight on..."
"That means I would've had to bend over, right?"
"That's irrelevant, Wright," Edgeworth insisted.
(I don't know. It sounds pretty relevant to me...) Phoenix thought as he jotted down the angle on the court record. "About the clothes...are you sure the blood is the victim's?"
"Yeah, pal," Detective Gumshoe responded.
"I thought so, but there's something odd about these."
"Something...Odd?" Gumshoe asked.
"Show us what's odd," Edgeworth ordered.
"I want to draw you're attention to the back. There's blood on the back of this outfit!"
"What?!" the judge asked, surprised.
"So? What does that mean?" Edgeworth asked.
"Um...Come to think of it, these clothes are too short from me. These are the victim's clothes!" Phoenix announced.
"So you're saying the blood soaked through to the back?" Edgeworth asked.
"Yes, I am." The spectators started making noise, but they all quieted down when Edgeworth spoke.
"So?"
"?"
"Remember where these were found. They were in your house."
"Um...That's true, they were...Oh, NO!"
"That's right. The only thing you succeeded in doing...Is proving your own guilt!" Edgeworth yelled. The spectators went into an uproar. Phoenix knew this was far from over...

Chapter 5
"I am ready to hand down my verdict." The room was quiet and seemed to close in around Phoenix.
"Wait!" Phoenix shouted frantically. "I didn't finish my cross-examination yet."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Wright. You had your chance."
"B-but..."
"Objection!" Edgeworth shouted. Everyone's attention was immediately drawn to him. "I still have to call my next witness."
"But that won't help you," the judge said.
"But it'll help this court know every detail of the truth." Phoenix's hope was restored. However, this was his last chance. If he couldn't find a contradiction in this testimony, ...he didn't want to think about it.
"Very well. Bring in your next witness."
"The prosecution calls Larry Butz to the stand!" Larry got onto the witness stand. Phoenix couldn't believe he had to cross-examine him again.
"Witness, state your name and occupation," Edgeworth said.
"I'm Larry Butz, an artist!"
"Would you testify about what you saw that day?" the judge asked.
"Sure, dude."
"I was taking an afternoon walk, when I heard a woman scream. I ran as fast as I could, only to see a beautiful young red-head get shot by Nick over there!"
"Wow. That was...short. You may cross-examine," the judge said.
"Gladly, Your Honor. So, witness, you heard a woman scream?"
"Yes."
"How long did it take you to stumble upon the crime scene?"
"About five minutes after hearing her scream."
"Five minutes...About what time did you hear her?"
"I'd say 1:30."
"Mr. Butz, are you sure?"
"Y-yes. I was wearing a watch."
"According to this autopsy report, she died between 1 and 1:30. You didn't see the crime scene until 1:35. This is clearly a contradiction!" The spectators started talking again. (Alright! This case is...)
"Tsk, tsk. Wright, I want you to think about this. If she should have been dead when the witness saw her die, what does that mean?"
"It means..." (When I think about it, it all makes sense.) "Larry stumbled upon a fake crime scene!" Suddenly, everyone seemed to be talking at once, and Phoenix was feeling much better. The truth was going to come out, he could feel it.

Chapter 6
"Please, Wright. A fake crime scene?" Edgeworth asked.
"Think about it. It's in the middle of the day, and someone who looked just like me was..."
"There's no way. What about your fingerprints on the gun or the victim's clothing in your house?"
"You're right. We need a little more detail. Let me ask you this, Larry. Did I look any different than I do now?"
"No. Except...You were wearing black clothesand black gloves..." Larry replied.
"Black gloves? Are you sure?!"
"Yeah. I got a good look at them while you were pointing a gun at me."
"Why didn't you tell me?!" Edgeworth asked.
"What? You can't tell me you didn't notice the gloves when he shot you."
"Thank you, Larry," Phoenix said after a pause. "You have proven my theory."
"How?"
"If I was wearing gloves, I wouldn't have left my fingerprints on the gun. Which means I cannot be the murderer."
"Wait one second, Wright," Edgeworth said. "He stumbled on a fake crime scene, remember? Which means you could have killed her before Larry showed up!"
"But why would I reenact it?" Phoenix asked. "If I was the killer...I certainly wouldn't have come back to act everything out again!"
"Then who really did it?" the judge asked. "Who really killed the victim?"
"..." Phoenix only knew one person in the entire room that would do such a thing, but...Could he really go through with it?
"I see," the judge said. "You will tell the court your accusation after a ten-minute recess." The gavel pounded, and everyone filed out of the courtroom.

Chapter 7
"Wright," Edgeworth said. "...You're the one who shot me. I saw you clearly and so did Larry. How will you explain that?" Phoenix paused before answering. This required some thought. It was disturbing there was a man out there who looked and sounded exactly like him.
"I think there's someone out there who's trying to frame me for these crimes. And I think that's exactly the reason they let Larry live."
"Who do you think did it?"
"It's not about who I think did it, it's about the only other possible suspect at this point in time," Phoenix replied. He was going to accuse someone who he knew was innocent in order to make the trial last longer. Was it right for him to do that? It seemed as if it was the only way for him to live.
"Then who will you accuse?" Edgeworth inquired.
"I'm going to have to accuse Larry."
"What?!" Edgeworth spat. Then, he regained his composure. "Wright, Larry's your friend. One of the few you have. Are you sure you want to go through with this?"
"I'll have to...To make sure the truth comes out in court tomorrow." Phoenix was serious. There was no way Larry could kill someone, but he had to buy time to find the real perpetrator. Edgeworth saw the look in his eyes. He seemed frantic. It was as if it was his only chance for survival. Phoenix wasn't sure he was doing the right thing when he went back into the courtroom.

Chapter 8
"I want to hear the defendant's...er...defense's accusation," the judge said. It finally came to this. This was the point Phoenix had been preparing for, hoping he was wrong. All he wanted to do was suspend the trial for a day so he could figure out what was happening.
"L-L-Larry Butz!" Phoenix stuttered.
"What?! Nick, duuude, It wasn't me!"
"Show us some evidence that Larry did this," Edgeworth demanded. Phoenix hadn't thought of that, but he still said, "Think about it. He's the only one who would need some people to reenact the scene of the crime so he could pretend to be a witness!"
"But you shot me. That wasn't a fake, and Larry saw that!"
"He must've hired the same man who was acting as me to shoot you."
"I wouldn't do that! You know I wouldn't, Nick!" Phoenix knew he was right, but he had to convince the judge to suspend the trial. It was the only way he could figure out what was going on.
"Wait. If he killed her, when did he do it and how? Where is the real body?" the judge asked.
"I didn't do it!" Larry insisted. Phoenix hesitated.
"...I don't know yet," he retorted. "I need more time to investigate."
"But you're the defendant! You should be in the detention center," the judge said.
"This does need more investigation, Your Honor. We need to find out what happened and why the murder would make a fake crime scene." The courtroom fell silent. Even Phoenix was surprised Edgeworth wanted to investigate some more. Finally, the judge spoke.
"This definitely needs further investigation. Who did this and why? Where is the real body and how did the victim really die? Why would the killer act it all out again? I expect answers by tomorrow's trial, which will reconvene at 10:00. Court is adjourned." The judge pounded his gavel and everyone filed out of the courtroom.

Chapter 9
"So, what'll you do now?" Edgeworth asked. Phoenix looked up at him blankly. He had managed to survive for the day. Hopefully, Larry could forgive him...
"Go back to my cell," Phoenix replied.
"Oh. ...Listen, Wright. Whoever did this needs to be caught, no matter what. I was so sure you were guilty up till now...I need you to investigate and find anything that points to the real criminal," Edgeworth said. Then, he paused to let it sink in. "That's why I bribed the guards to let you go for a couple hours."
"W-Whaaat?! E-Edgeworth, th-that's..." Phoenix started.
"What is necessary for the truth to come out tomorrow," Edgeworth interupted. That determined look on his face reminded Phoenix of ther court days in the past, and realized this was no different. They were just two people going about finding the truth two different ways. Edgeworth sighed. "I'll walk you out, but I'll be doing my own investigation. You are on your own, and make sure nobody sees you. If they do, it'll come back to haunt me."
"Are you sure you want to do this, Edgeworth? You could get into trouble if..."
"I'm sure. This isn't about me. It's about justice being served. In the end, that's what it all boils down to."
"I-I see..."
"Now go investigate. I'm sure you'll find something at the so-called crime scene."
"O-okay," Phoenix said. He walked out of the court and into the street, hoping he would find something. Anything. That would prove his innocence.

Chapter 10
Phoenix ran to his house. Why had it happened there? Why was he at the office at that time? How did his fingerprints get on the gun that he never used? Most importantly, why would someone create a fake crime scene? And to think they'd go so far as to shoot Edgeworth...He looked through the window, and saw the police crawling everywhere, along with Detective Gumshoe. Phoenix sighed. There was only one way not to be discovered... To cause a diversion while sneaking into his own house.
This is madness! he thought, grabbing the nearest rock and throwing it as hard as he could. The police were instantly on the move, trying to find out what juvenile delinquent did it, and Phoenix sneaked behind the house, opening the back door gently so as not to make any more noise. He tried sneaking to his bedroom upstairs, but had to stop. There were too many policemen there, and no way to avoid all of them. Phoenix shook his head and left. What was he going to do if he couldn't be seen? Borrow a uniform. Phoenix didn't know who would willingly give him their uniform. Maybe Detective Gumshoe?
I'll wait until he gets out of my house. In the mean time, I should investigate the Prosecutor's Office. There probably won't be as many police there.
