Well, I recently started doing edits of PW sprites. :3 I've actually reasonable amount of pixeling in the past, but I'm kind of old-school when it comes to pixel art in that I'm hardcore into dither-shading. So, editing PW sprites is quite an interesting challenge, since I'm constantly forcing myself to resist the urge to dither (which doesn't fit into the PW style too well).

To stop myself from having to stop myself from dithering (whut) I've mostly been doing splicing, so... enjoy, or something. :3

Section 1: Character Edits

Spoiler: Lana Skye, Co-Council
For some reason a couple of days ago I was struck with the urge to do a co-council Lana. I actually really don't like Lana much, but it was fun anyway since she's kinda hot. Yup. Used only Lana's sprites. Work-in-progress.

Image Image WHAT TWO LANAS

Image Image

And these are some FAIL animation tests D: I need to reshade her blink, it's horrifying. Also, something's weird with her talk... Lana's lucky she's good looking or I would have given up already. >_>;

As you can see, I've created co-council for the defense AND the prosecution, whee. I actually have quite a few more expression variations but since they're a real pain to animate I don't think I'll bother actually animating them actually organising & posting her spritesheet unless there's a genuine interest in her, because I certainly don't have a use for her... currently she's just an exercise in masochism. Especially since I still haven't decided what to do with her horrible mutant arms that just END. ._.

Spoiler: Godot, unmasked
Image

Planning on re-shading the clothes to fit the face shading & expanding to more poses...

Sprites used: Godot & Diego, obviously.

Spoiler: Apollo Justice, out-of-court
Image

Planning on expanding this to more poses...

Spoiler: Gag Edits (No spoilers)
Image

Balding Phoenix, because Ceres mentioned that why he thought Phoenix wore that hat circa GS4, and I couldn't resist.
Sprites used: Phoenix Wright & Winston P-P-PAYNE. I just realised they have the opposite initials.

Image

Edgeworth the Très Bien Waitress. Or waiter?
Sprites used: Miles Edgeworth, Luke Atmey, Waitress!Mia, Waitress!Maggey, Diego Armando and Guy Eldoon.

Section 2: Original Characters

Spoiler: My Avatar
Image Image

I was in desperate need of an avatar, so I threw this together. It was my first PW sprite edit, and although there are some things I'm unhappy with, it's altogether a pretty decent job. I'm very pleased with the free-handed glasses.

It looks best on light backgrounds, and since CR is dark I tried inserting a bg (Luke Atmey's office, to be exact) but then it looked too busy, so... yeah. You win some, you lose some.

Sprites used: the base is Young Ema, with pieces from Detective Ema, Vera Misham, Olga Orly, Lana Skye, "Mia" Pearls and Alita Tiala (those last two are pretty hard to spot!). Oh, and some of the palette nabbed from Valant Gramarye.

Spoiler: Nyala Nagawara, for KSA_Tech
I'm currently doing some animation for KSA_Tech of his original character, Nyala Nagawara. I can't really tell you much about her, because I don't know anything. :D But I think she's quite pretty.

Image

Sprites used: Detective Ema Skye, Lana Skye, Klavier Gavin, Vera Misham, Maggey Byrde, Maya Fey, Plum Kitaki, Ron DeLite, Dr. Hotti, palettes from Grossberg & Larimoir, and a bunch of free-handed junk. Sister Bikini and Wesley Stickler were slated to join the fun, but they didn't make the final cut. D: Stickler's still going into some of the other poses, though... Ufufu...

Section 3: Full Body Sprites

For some reason I've decided it's a good idea to do FULL BODY VERSIONS of the characters. Now you can see how tall Trucy and Apollo are compared to each other! :D

Image Image

Maybe these'll be useful to someone! Like, if you do a case from the point of view of Missile, so you can only see up to people's knees... or the point of view of Pearls, so you can only see up to people's chests...

...or the point of view of Hotti, so you only look at girls' BREASTS. :hotti:

But seriously, those first two ideas sound really cute. *o* The rest of the full body sprites are organised by what game & case they first appear in, for simplicity's sake.

Spoiler: Characters from 1-5
Image

Spoiler: Characters from 4-1
Image Image

Spoiler: Characters from 4-2
Image

Spoiler: Characters from 4-2 SPOILERS
Image Image

Spoiler: Characters from 4-4
Image

Spoiler: EXTRA: 1/2 Skeleton Apollo
Image Image<-- not supposed to be transparent, program b0rked

Final note: I do everything in MSPaint except for saving as gif and animating. LAYERS ARE FOR SISSIES WHUT. (Well actually not really, but like I said, I'm pretty old-school about pixel art. n_n)

FEEDBACK APPRECIATED~

Haha, wow fast reply. o_o;

Thanks, glad you like my work. :3 I actually also thought she looked a little tall, but she's based direct off of her official art so I just went with it.

Actually, I think all the characters look too tall on their official arts, I'm so used to seeing them as floating torsos...

Hooray! I was hoping you'd post a thread, I wanted to see more than just your avatar~

I sympathize with the dithering thing. I'm not really a hardcore ditherer, but this cel-shading is foreign to me. XD''

Lana looks amazing, even with her bizarre amputated arms.

For the second one, MAN that's a lot of sprites used. The only ones I can pick out are Ema and possibly Plum. Her body and hair are gorgeous, although with all the sprites used I still get Ema from her face. XD''''' Also, I think the animation is a bit fast.

Trucy looks very good, if you told me it was official I'd believe you in an instant. Seriously.

@kana-hajime & Zinle: Thank you~! And Zinle, you're in luck, 'cause I am posting more. :3

@Ceres: Thanks! Yeah, only Paint. Actually, I don't really have any other programs I could pixel in (on this computer, anyway).

First, thanks, I'm glad you like my stuff. n_n; And actually, there are almost as many sprites used in my avatar. :D I really grab such tiny tiny pieces to blend together, sometimes I'd be better off free-drawing it all. If you do a direct comparison with Ema you can see some differences (eyes & nose) but yeah... I'm still trying to figure out how to get her to look a little less of Ema. :/ The animation is fast because animating is a reaaally big pain, so I just tossed together the frames GS4 style. I'm a bit of a lazy daisy. Besides, KSA's using it for a case and in his casemaker he animates straight from the sheet anyway, so whatever.

Anyway, on to business! I've finished another full body sprite, this time it's Apollo! Also: I offically HATE shading white argh. I was going to do Ema & Ema next but NO. Agggh.

Image

WAIT WAIT BUT JETI HE'S NOT BLINKING OR TALKING OR ANYTHING, NUT-BUTT

Well he took so long to do that I figured I'd post this part and take a break. Trucy was pretty easy because I could use one of her sprites for the top half of her body, but noooo, all I have of Apollo is his face, bluhh. Also, I think I over-shaded him in places (this is still all MSPaint, I swear) so I wanna look at something else a while before I start animating.

... I felt really weird when working on his crotch, zoomed in 800x. It was like, the entire screen was his crotch. D: What?

Yeah, I tend to only grab little pieces when I've failed to freedraw. XD'' You've MASTERED the art of blending, though.

I think it's the face shape that gives off the Ema vibe? The nose and eyes are different, but the shading and face shape is the same. She's lovely, though, nonetheless.

For Apollo, he looks great. I don't think you could've over-shaded since you were just following the official shading. XD The bracelet is especially cool.
Spoiler: 4-4 maybe? Just being careful
I overlayed the front-facing screenshot with yours. His body is a tiny bit bigger than yours, so I can see you didn't use it. Not that it would've been much more help than the art you went from, since it had way more colors than sprites do. XD' Yours looks better, honestly.

I know how you feel with the crotch thing, from drawing not from sprites though. Awkward, especially when someone walks up to you then. =#

Would you mind if I tried a full-body sprite myself? It looks like fun, although I doubt it'd look as good as yours. I'd do Kristoph.

Hm, I'll look into that, maybe play around with her chin or something. Thanks. :3

Well, Apollo seems to have way more shades of colors than any of the other characters I've worked with. Especially white, he has way too many shades of white. D: I'm just worried it makes some of the lines I did look anti-aliased. :/

Spoiler: Omnomnom
Yeah... I saw that screenshot and got all exited, thinking I didn't have to do everything, but then I looked closer and was all :sadshoe:. But I kept it handy anyway, to reference his buttons.

Also, my head's gonna explode from all this flattery, whut.

Haha, what? Of course, go right ahead! I mean, who am I to stop you, right? ^^; I wasn't really keen on doing Kristoph anytime soon, anyway, since his art means he's also a total re-draw and I'd wanna do something easier after Apollo.

Okay, I'm in the middle of working on a sprite of Plum Kitaki, who has almost definately become the most difficult bit of pixel-work I've ever done. D: I mean, maybe I'm exaggerating, but I can't remember doing anything even remotely as complicated as her kimono in the past. *flops* Luckily, I just need to finish her shoes and broom at this point. *phew~* Then I need to finish a BIG FAT SPOILER sprite, but whatever.

In the meantime, though, I did the animations for Apollo. Yay?

Image

WOW, LOOK AT THOSE CHORDS OF STEEL IN ACTION!!!

Just for kicks, I made his animation out of spoilers! Don't click if you haven't finished AJ, please.

Spoiler: AJ SPOILERS OHNO
I decided to keep my editing sensible for once, and base his animations off of his family. :D If you examine the actual Trucy & Apollo sprites, they actually have pretty much the same eyes. Therefore, Apollo's eye animation is a slight edit on hers (mostly for color & to get rid of the feminine eyelashes.)

When I got to his mouth, Trucy never quite had the right expression AND her mouth was awful small... so I moved on to their mommy. :3 It's a pretty severe edit, but his mouth base did indeed begin as Thalassa.

I'll tell you though, before I started editing it down he looked prety weird with lipstick. :hotti:

Anyway, I now have the basis to create frontview!Apollo sprites, so if anyone's interested, do speak up. :3 I have no use for frontview!Apollo sprites myself, so I've no intention of going through all the effort if they'd never come to use. (Likewise, I have no use for Lana, so if you'd like to see most poses/expressions, just say something!)

Besides Apollo & (WIP) Plum Kitaki, I threw together some MIKE MEEKINS... es! Both GS4 and GS1 versions, oh joy!

Image

Spoiler: GS4 version, to save space or something.
Image

Look at those little purple shoes, what the heck. Meekins was the fastest spriting job (even with the blackout in my area that forced me to re-do his shoes) BUT he also took by FAR the longest to animate--not just because he has WAY more frames, but because there are errors on his sprite sheets. D:

Also, everyone should keep an eye out, because soon I'll begin posting sprites of original characters for my horrifyingly complicated fangame. Can anyone guess who the main character is? :B

I am in love. :D They just look so natural it's amazing. I really can't see where the official sprite ends and your work begins. (Also much envy for your ability to draw clothes.)

What's the difference between the two versions of Mike Meekins, though? I've scanned them carefully twice and still can't see it. o.o

@ antialias: Thank you, and I'm glad you think it's natural-looking--that is the effect I'm going for, after all. :3

The only difference between Meekins & Meekins is the fact that his left hand finally healed after getting it stuck in that car door around 1-5. I didn't notice it at first, either, to be quite frank, but Meekins is one of my favorites so I honored him with both versions.

Glad you like my avatar enough to call it fabulous! :D

But your comment about the legs really got me thinking... what exactly doesn't match? Taking Apollo (because his pose made him the easiest to deal with) I compared the lengths and they all seem pretty accurate. The wrist and crotch line up, as expected, and when I take the assumed length of his fingers, the length from elbow to fingertips approximates the length of his femur. His projected femur approximates the length from his the top of his tibia to the bottom of his feet, &c., &c.

For kicks, I freehanded half of his skeleton in paint.

Image

He's actually pretty anatomically accurate.

Y'know, I like your style. :hotti:

@ antialiasis & Atsime: I know that when I first look at all of the characters they seem off, but I think that it's partly due to the fact that we never see them below the waist, so we're not used to how long their legs actually are... maybe. Actually, I really dunno. ._.' But I'm glad both of you like my skeleton~ It was pretty fun, reminded me of how good I used to be drawing with the mouse. I'm a lot shakier now, it's a little depressing.

Zinle wrote:

Ok, I admit, I actually was going to do that at first. :D But I decided to keep it real, since I'm trying to demonstrate the reality of his skeletal structure...

(But I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. :scientific: )

Anyway, I animated his skeleton because... Well I dunno, I felt like animating his skeleton. D: Unfortunately the program I used to save as .gif completely flipped out on me, and I ended up with his skeleton being translucent, bleh. I guess it looks OK. I'm considering using a cropped version as my avatar.

Spoiler: saving space, blah blah blah
Image

Anyway, onto actual business: finished another sprite! Two, actually, but... well, you'll see! They're SPOILERS for case 4-2, so... don't click if you don't want to know, &c., &c.

Spoiler: 4-2 spoilers, uh-oh!
NOW INTRODUCING THE AMAZING MR. HAT!

Image Image

I've had the beginnings of both of these done since I first finished the first Trucy sprite, but I was lollygagging because I didn't want to have to do Mr. Hat's hat & fingers in perspective (for when he lifts his head to talk). It came out ok, though... I guess.

ALSO I just noticed 3 animation errors on the Hat talking one, arghh. *headdesk* I'll fix those later.

@Zinle: I'll totally do Moe, but it'll be awhile because I have a couple I've started already that I want to finish first. Also, beacuse Moe's gonna be hard to do. :sadshoe:

WOW. I can't believe you free-handed that skeleton. I bow down to your far superior knowledge of pixels and human anatomy. =#

Spoiler: Your 4-2 spoiler
Mr. Hat! Awesome! You did a great job on the hand, but I think the top of his hat gets a little too thin when he talks, maybe? The top and bottom of his head moves, but the hat seems to move like it was only the top.
I'm no expert on perspective though, so don't take my word for it. XD'''

What do you mean by 'used to'? You seem pretty good to me! :D
Especially with how nice the skeleton look. :odoroki:

Nice Trucy and Mr. Hat, it helps somehow with a cosplay I might do. <3

Well, the "used to" thing isn't so much something you can see on the finished product... back when i was really in the swing of things with Paint, I used to draw as much as I could on one mouse click since Paint only allows three steps of undoes. Going back to mouse drawing after so long, now my hand isn't so steady as I wish it were. D: I have to do things little by little or I get CRAZY lines. (Same thing happens when I ink on paper, now, very upsetting).

Spoiler: UM UMMM
You're going to do a Minuki&Hat cosplay? :pearly: I'm actually working on the mechanics of Mr. Hat (& practicing my ventriloquism) too~ Good luck, if so. Because I can tell he's going to be a pain to implement. D:

Hurr, well, I'm an art student & aspiring comic creator, so if I didn't have a good grasp on anatomy... boyoboy, I'd be in trouble. ._.;

Spoiler: f-f-four t-t-two
That was the part that gave me the most trouble D: Just even thinking about it.

Perspectively speaking, things that move back in space should get smaller, so thinking of the hat as a cylinder would mean the end farther (top) should be smaller than the end closer (bottom) BUT the hat isn't a perfect cylinder, so when the larger half moves away, it should get smaller, but by the angle created by the shape of the hat I technically think it would be a straight line when in perspective DDD: but of course I can't do that because that'd look even worse, but if i let it slant out a bit that'd look like it didn't lean back at all, so I'd have to go thinner, which then looks too thin... :meekins:

Perhaps the hat remains too "tall" when it leans back, you think? I'm not too great at gauging the heights of things like that... also, I think I accidentally ignored the rule about cylinders approaching a circle the more of a tilt there is, oops. ._. Any thoughts on the matter? It's near 1am and I think I'm just confusing myself more trying to reason it out.

*coughs* Anyway, I meant to have Plum finished by now, but I was doing some work for PWLib, so, hm. Next post should have Plum & also maybe some new expressions for Nyala, but I'm away for the weekend so that won't be 'till monday.

Also, it occurs to me that my topic currently lacks breasts. After I finish everyone in my secret queue, I'm definately gonna do Pearls!Mia.

It appears full-body sprites are becoming popular. I can definitely respect your work on them.

I also see that you didn't just reflect Lana's image to have her face the other direction. That kind of work is definitely worthy of my praise. I know how much of a pain customizing can be at times. [recalls own work on Lana]

Spoiler: quatre-duex : 4-2
Yesss, if I can. I'm trying to nake models of the mechanism out of some simple pulleys... the art book scans imply that he's made of some umbrella parts (which was actually my original plan before consulting the art books) so right now I'm working on umbrella-based pulley systems. Tough stuff!

The ventriloquism end I'm also working on, but unfortunately I can't figure out what kind of voice I should do for him. :sadshoe: Or rather, what kind I can do. I've been blessed/cursed with a highish-pitched voice appropriate for a young girl (like, say, Trucy) but arrrgh I can't make any manly noises. e_e; All I know is, he's going to have a British accent. Because I think he'd sound like PROFESSOR LAYTON~~~ yesssss~

OK NOW THAT THAT'S DONE WITH:

Here's some sprites I did during downtime on the other forum. :pearly:
Spoiler: Godot Unmasked!
Image

I'm trying to figure out if this should be considered a spoiler or not, but BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY or something.

I did it for the lulz I MEAN I MEAN because I love his scar. :3 Also, I made a little step-by-step that I might as well post here because UHHHH well I don't know.

Image

1) Base: Godot
2) Rough Cut&Paste of portions of Diego's facial features & hairline
3) Restoration of some of Godot's hair, recolored hair around hairline & smoothed out face shading
4) More recoloring of hair & earrings
5) Flipped his right eye to fix that weird expression
6) Finally got sick of that "front-and-center" lightsource and shaded according to an angled lightsource, also finished recoloring the hair & gave him red eyes
7) Fixed some hair shading and gave him a slightly wider widow's peak to avoid a perfectly "framed" look
8) Shaded under his eyes to give a slightly more tired/older look
9) Drew in his scar, removed shine from his cheek, placed a lighter red highlight in his eyes & did some minute skin shading you'd be hard pressed to notice

Next, I finally remembered I didn't yet make a front-view Apollo, so I did.

Image

(For both Godot AND Apollo I'm planning on making more poses... just... not right now. Also planning to reshade Godot, but don't look too forward to it because I wouldn't want you ending up WAITING FOR GODOT haha :spit: )

Ummm, little joke edit I made of a balding Phoenix, based on Ceres' comment on why he thinks Phoenix wears the hobo-hat circa GS4.

Image

Phoenix+Payne, obviously. Poor Phoenix. :sadshoe: This sprite is at once amusing and depressing, I think.

Also, Edgy: Image

And FINALLY, I'm currently in-progress on a couple of "big" edits, including (but not limited to!) the piece this deceptive little preview is taken from:

Image

Ufufu...

On an unrelated note, I drew a picture of Trucy for use in stuff. it's kinda big and not a sprite, but I don't have a fanart topic so I figured I'd mention it here or something.

Anyway, as always, feedback appreciated~~~ (Especially if you want to use something for a game :D I'd be really happy~)

Edit: JEEZ sometimes I CAN'T SPELL

Hmmm, well, I hate double posting but I've a new sprite and it's a new day, so... nothing really to do about it. .__.

And besides, I've been waiting and waiting to post this one. D:

Now presenting Plum Kitaki! Now, that's what I call one foxy lady. Amirite? :hotti: brick'd*

Image

Plum here was actually the reason I started making full body sprites in the first place. I saw her character art and pretty much went ohmondieu quel joli kimono *o*

Of course, at that time I considered myself a bit out-of-practice to tackle the patterns on that thing, so I warmed up a bit by doing Trucy (basic practice) & Apollo (to get used to REDRAWING EVERYTHING URRRGH) and here we are. :3

I added... way too many colors, really. v_v I'm not too happy about that (although I know it was kind of necessary, since the designs required colors not normally found on her). I even reseorted to dithering in the ears of the fox because I just couldn't stand the thought of adding any more colors. ;-; I think there are exactly twice as many colors that in her normal animations, wehhh. But I'm proud of how well the fox came out, nontheless. :3 (The broom on the other hand... well, let's not talk about that broom).

This piece, on the whole, really became a sort of "crash course in curves" for me (something I've always been a bit of a failure at). This is the reason I do things, so that they may become a learning experience. In that sense: MISHION COMPREAT. *fox pose*

On a final note: guys, I'm not some infallible pixel god. :3 Do feel free to offer critique~

Lil Plum it is.
The hands look kinda weird in that pose, but I guess it was 'cose of the broom?
But indeedly no need to complain.

Which hand, the hand near her head? (Because the hand on the broom is direct from her sprites).

I wasn't really all too happy with that hand, actually, but I really liked the "feel" of her pose from her concept art, so I decided to pixel it in (that particular pose doesn't appear in any of her sprites).

Actually, now that I really look at that hand I didn't smooth it out that well. e_e; My primary concern was her Kimono, so I didn't pay much attention to it. Ehehe...

It's actually pretty damn GREAT

*worship, etc. etc...*

I agree with Zinle in respects to the hand though.

Hmm, is it really that disjoint? *thinks* I've been working on this one on and off for a few weeks now, so it's getting to the point of "I've been staring at this so long I don't know what's going on anymore".

Is this better, perhaps?

Image

I hadn't wanted to do that initially because of the broom, but now that I look at it, I think it does work a bit better... Though I have to finish re-shading that broom again, arrrrrgggh D:

(By the way, a quick thank you to Glace Leau for unintentionally helping me with this by mentioning the program RotSprite in her topic :D without it I wouldn't have been able to move that broom at all, although I still have to completely re-shade the thing.)

Oh, and a couple of days ago I opened up a blank Paint document and pasted in a bunch of sprites with the intention of making

Spoiler: a 3-3 spoiler
a sprite of Viola Cadaverini in a Très Bien waitress outfit

I somehow ended up with Edgey in a waitress outfit. Wait whut?

Image

I know that some of the shading on this makes zero sense, but it's really just a joke edit that's already gotten a bit out of hand (I've spent way more time on it than it deserves). Sprites used in its creation are as follows: Edgey (no duh), Waitress!Mia, Waitress!Maggey, Diego Armando (?!), Luke Atmey and Guy Eldoon (double ?!).

For the record, I'm really not into guys in french maid outfits (which, let's face it, that's pretty much what this is). Especially since this outfit seems based on the Anna Miller style of waitress uniform, which feature aprons that force a type of empire waistline meant to accentuate the fullness of the breasts (which Edgeworth here doesn't have).

Ok, so... back to doin' stuff or something. e_e;
