Might I suggest using a free program such as GiFFY to save your images?

I use MSPaint to edit my images, but its .gif saving capabilities are... not terribly good. But GiFFY can help a lot with the saving of the sprites and even in making the backgrounds transparent.

Currently the algorithm Paint uses to save .gifs makes your images a little too hard to see for me to judge how you're editing things.

I use a combination of Paint.net and GIMP... though I mostly use GIMP. It's a good program.
It's how I made my OC John Lugh, though I haven't got him up as my avatar on here yet.
