In this thread we discuss languages. I love languages. I think there may be a thread like this somewhere, but the search function is disabled.

I'm norwegian, and I know the these languages:
-Norwegian (Of course. There are two written forms of norwegian, bokmål (literally "book language") and nynorsk (new norwegian). Bokmål is the more used one, but I'm currently learning nynorsk and it's by far the most awesome version of the language. )
-Swedish
-Danish (Swedish and danish are very similar to norwegian)
-English (Obviously)
-Spanish (In Norway we choose between learning german, spanish and french in 8. grade. Spanish is hard.)

I understand a bit of some other germanic languages too (german, icelandic and faroese), and of course I know a few words in other languages, but not much. Except the scandinavian languages, I know english best. I actually get top english grades at school even though my english isn't perfect in any way. Spanish is an annoying language because it's hard to remember all the verbs, so my spanish is rather bad.

Which languages do you know?

I can only speak a few:

English (fluent)
German (fluent)
Finnish (learning)

At the moment, I'm taking German in high school (even though I'm already fluent in it. I want the good grade) and Finnish out of school. They're my two favorite languages. (Probably because I'm half german and half finnish... heheh)

I know:

- Spanish (Well I lived in Spain all of my life and I still live here.)
- English (Well, it's necesary to know this language, and I love it. :D)
- French (Only a bit. ^^)

Edit:

Well the main problem is just remembering verbs. Not just is it a pain to learn the rules for conjugation (I think that's what it's called in english), there is also a lot of irregular ones. I'm currently trying to remember all the forms of the verb "poder" or something.

Also spanish people are almost impossible to understand because they speak so fast. Perhaps the most useful phrases I've learned so far are
"Más despacio, por favor" and "No comprendo". (Did I get those right?)

By the way, feel free to correct my english.

You haven't heard fast until you hear native Germans. :O

I speak a bit of German but English is my primary language since I was, y'know, born and raised in America. I've contemplated taking Japanese or maybe Russian but haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I can speak German but I can't form complete thoughts in my head. I can read and understand spoken German decently.

-PHP (preferred web language)
-Jav--- oh wait, you're not including programming languages with this xD

Well, I was born in Canada, so English is my native tongue. ^_^

I know some Finnish, because ALL of my family is Finnish... except for me. ;_; And it's funny, apparently I only spoke Finnish when I was a kid. Until I had to start going to school. O_o So, I understand a lot of Finnish, but I can't speak it very well.

I took 4 years of French in high school, but I'm not very good with it anymore. ^_^;; I can understand some, but can't speak very much.

I'm currently working on learning Japanese. I understand a LOT of Japanese, due to watching subtitled anime all the time. XD Now, I'm working more on the reading/writing/speaking part. Especially since I want to move to Japan. :edgy: (I'm hoping to be there by the end of this year, or the beginning of next year.)

I can barely read any of those. :lana:

I think my big problem is staying interested in something enough to absorb all of the information. There will be something interesting and then after 10 minutes of study it's like ADD kicks in or something when I don't understand something. It's really annoying right now.

My English is okayish.
My Japanese is horrible because I'm only interested in the read/write portion of the language. I can understand most 1-3 Grade material but my sentence construction is just as weird as my English.

I'm almost completely disconnected from French at this point.

...........

Funny thing...The guy I talk to half the time at the *$ went to China for a year and he still retains a lot of the material he used. He didn't focus so much on the read/write portions of the language but more on vocabulary, grammar and proper pronunciation. He believes I'm a lover of languages but I'm not. Reason being I couldn't care at all for Spanish even if I tried(and I have). :lana:

I know a cute high school thingy that is starting her third year at the same place I went to. They're feeding ideas into her head like you have to know two foreign languages to get into college.

She's in her second year of Spanish and first year of French. :yuusaku:

To be fair, France is, oddly, one of the hardest countries to speak French in. They abbreviate a lot and have a lot of slang and probably talk the fastest of all French-speaking countries. I always find myself being able to follow people from Africa speaking French a whole lot better than the French themselves.

- Spanish (fluent)
And that's all. I wish I knew more languages...

I completely agree with Tinker about French... ^^;

Though, myself, I speak:

Dutch (fluent since I live here and all~)
English (Also fluent~Though I sometimes make grammatical errors)
French (I can understand a lot of it but can't speak it very well)
German (I understand everything but can't speak it very well and I fail at the grammar xD)

lol those are all the languages I get at school ): What they ask from kids these days... Especially ones doing Spanish or Italian extra at my school... and the ones also taking Ancient Greek and Latin... @___@;

I also know some phrases/words in like 5 other languages, but that doesn't really count, does it? XD
And I'm thinking of studying Japanese from my father's old course...though it's kind of frightening how he only got to page 75 after two years of studying it in a class.... ._.

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, lough and through?
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird,
And dead: it's said like bed, not bead -
For goodness sake don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there's dose and rose and lose -
Just look them up - and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword,
And do and go and thwart and cart -
Come, come, I've hardly made a start!
A dreadful language? Man alive!
I'd mastered it when I was five!

Russian - native language, yay! :blondie:

English - nearly fluent. I've been learning since I was 5.

German - meh, after 3 years of studying I've only learned to read and translate. Grammar sucks. I can't even construct sentences! >_<

Japanese - just started learning it 6 days ago at university. Before that knew only some expressions.

Thinking also about Spanish, but I doubt that it would happen...

You think that makes no sense, how about this: In french, the adjective comes after the noun. For example, you say "Un chaise noir" (a chair black) instead of "Un noir chaise (a black chair).

- Spanish (first language, I can speak and understand it fluently but my grammar still sucks)
- English (wellz I live in the USA, and when in Rome... eat cake! *not a lie*)
- Italian (I studied this on my own, but I stopped because I decided to take up Japanese instead, and I'll pick it up again after I'm done formally studying Japanese)
- Japanese (2 years or so, and I can get around Japan fairly well, since I took a trip there this summer. I was the translator for my family XD)

Well, I know:

English - DUH
Japanese - I'm not fluent, but it's the only other language where I can understand what is being said. I'm a translator for a fansite and I have a Japanese teacher in Kyoto.
Other languages where I know one or two words.
German- I know hello, and "shit"
French- Picked up a few phrases from my brother.
Spanish- My friend Esteban taught me some things.
Hebrew- Only hello.

Yep, that's all I know.

C'mon, that's not weird. In Spanish, for example, the adjective can come neither after or before the noun, though it usually comes after. Anyway, I'm sure it's the same with more Romanic languages.

And, as a Spanish native speaker, I find the English pronunciation quite weird. For example, Spanish has only five vowels (phonetically speaking) while English has at least ten. And they differ between dialects!

On-topic:
- Spanish: first language.
- English: I've been studying it since I was four or five.
- French: I've been studying it for four years and I can't even make a coherent sentence thanks to my WONDERFUL teacher (and I get excellents... meh). On top of that, I absolutely loathe how it sounds.
