Relax...There are lot of Chinese people whose surname is 魯 and it doesn't bother anyone at all. Besides, if 魯克斯 is just a transliteration, then it can be equally replaced by 路（road), 露(dew),錄(record), or any other character whose pronunciation is Lu. I was just giving an example, okey?

I know my Japanese is really poor because I don't speak it enough. This is probably why most of my vocabulary suffers. Logic dictates that if you're in an English environment, you'll pick up on it easily. Then again, I learned to read and write before I spoke, so I'm not really sure where I am in terms of learning.

Hungarian: My native language.
English: I speak it quite well. (as you can see on this forum, lol).
French: I'm learning it now, and without dictionary, I understood more than the half of case 1-1 (that's not all that bad I guess).

Also, I know some words in German, Spanish and Italian, so I can understand some of it when it's written, but I can't construct a sentence :D

Hm... I was under the distinct impression that videogames and TV games, in japanese, aren't "played" (遊ぶ), but "done" (為る). So your sentences would have to read 私は子供のころ、いつもテレビーゲームをしました。「スーパーマリオ」というゲームソフトでよくしました。 and so on and so forth. =p

The finnish language is apparently incredibly difficult. Maybe the constant brain training that language is is the reason that finnish school children are the smartest in Europe.

This reminds me of an awesome story that started this morning. I was on Skype talking to more Japanese chicks. One added me this morning under the name of Ayumi. I had some fun with this for a bit and my comprehension didn't fall out as much. She was having trouble understanding why I'm able to understand though. :shy:

I think I made her cry. Why do these girls have such pride of their language? It's not like I'm taking anything away from them. :yuusaku:

If I used the particle を, then yes, I'd have to use する. The difference is I'm using で.

Example:
If I were to use "wo", I'd say "watashi wa kuruma wo unten shita".
(I drove a car.)

If I were to use "de", I'd say "watashi wa kuruma de itta."
(I went BY car.)

So basically, if I were to use the "wo" particle, my sentence would come out as "I played video games". Since I used "de", it comes out as "I played WITH video games".

Actually, it's that we have a different school system from the others. We work a lot more in ages 7 to 12(?) I hear, that school is more of a club in many states for that time.

And for a foreigner, Finnish is damn hard, but it's no problem for people that live in Finland.
So I dont think the language has much to do with intelligence.

It was a joke.

But the norwegian school system suck. Most of the teachers are obsessed with that school should be fun and stuff, but no one really enjoys it anyway and there we end up not learning anything.

We have a teacher from Germany. According to him norwegian is one of the hardest languages, and english is easy to learn but hard to get good at.

I love my native language of English, and forever cherish those who can deftly manipulate it.

I was fairly adept at German in high school, but I've since forgotten a lot of it. I should really resume studying so I don't lose it.

I've been informally studying Japanese for many years, and I can read and write all the kana pretty well. My exchange friends tell me that my pronunciation is good, and I know some basic grammar.

It's supposed to be the German equivalent of "okay" or "just alright". I forget how exactly you spell it ("So lala"? "Solala"? "So la-la"? X_X)

Yay! Cool thread~

My primary language is Finnish which I have been talking almost all my life. I came from Norway to Finland but sadly I can't remember any Norwegian anymore. It would have been cool to have two languages that you can talk properly.

Languages that I have studied are English, Which I think I'm pretty good with (I sometimes type/talk too formally and that's annoying part) Swedish, meh I suck at Swedish it's because I think that if I go to Sweden I would need to use only English to talk with people, and then finally Japanese.
Currently I'm not taking Japanese lessons because I live at our art school student dorms. And the school is on a tiny village which doesn't have any langauge study opinions (Or any other activities for that matter >_>) But when I was living near a bigger town there was an opinion to study Japanese. I can read hiragana, katakana and some kanji as well. Write also and talk the language.

By the way, it must be horribly boring for all you who have english as a native language. You don't really have to learn any other languages, which is convenient but also kind of sad, and there's a lot of more intresting and beautiful languages than English.

Exactly the problem.

If you come from a place like North America, Canada or England you tend to pick up English as a first language since it covers a large chunk of the world(33+%?), or at least common enough to be that important for communication. The thing is, it's so common that the emphasis on how important it really is, is fake. When you have all of China, Russia, Japan...Basically a large chunk of Europe trying to learn English because it is said to be spoken by most of the world, you get this false idea that it's so important you won't need to learn anything else. :shy:

English is my first language and as such, it is very strange at this point now that I'm learning another language. Still, I understand a lot of things that are normally incomprehensible to an average English speaking person. I just wish I knew if that's a good thing.

A lot of abstract ideas are learned together. The best way to learn vocabulary in another language is by learning ideas that are associated in one way or another. As for grammar, good luck. :lana:

I'm still on the last chapter of 皆の日本語漢字練習長 and I have to tell you, this chapter has me slowing down exponentially thanks to my inability to learn ideas that have no relation to each other. On a completely unrelated note, I've studied for the first time in 5 days today and my reading comprehension seems to have improved dramatically. Why this is, I have no idea. A lot of the words I've studied lately are tied to adjectives and common ideas(at least common to me in English). I haven't been studying grammar and particle structures at all. I should go back to that.

For anyone trying to read Japanese I suggest the Basic Kanji Book(and try your best not to get bored and move on to something else yet) and a balance of Skype. I have no idea how Asian people learn English because there is no emphasis on learning the written portion of our language other than vocabulary and grammar. I'm guessing it's a similar thing though. Textbooks and Skype. :-P

Actually, if Finnish is really similar to Hungarian in terms of grammar, I think I know why is it so hard for a foreigner whose native language in English / German / French / etc.

But haha, we have an easy time to learn your language (English is easy, really), but it's harder for you to learn ours :P
Well, maybe since English is both the most spoken / one of the most simple languages, maybe you don't even want to learn any others...

While English is not the best sounding / most beautiful language in my opinion, I'm not surprised that English has become the world's most spoken language. Yeah, the U.S. had a great influence on pretty much everything, but that's probably not the only reason.

One thing I really like about English is that there is only one version of you, not a normal and more polite like in many languages (tu / vous in French, te / ön in Hungarian, etc.). It's always confusing which to use, lol.
Also, while there is still a "he" and "she", at least the nouns don't have genders (like in French, Italian, Spanish... hell, in German, there are 3).

What I don't like about English is that spelling doesn't match pronunciation. I mean, one letter can be pronounced differently in different words.
Like
U -> bus / burn / butcher
C -> car / center
E -> lend / key / lighter / lake ("e" isn't even pronounced here)
Still, it's nothing compared to French :)

Spanish: Primary Language. I live here in Baja California, but have only been one year in a Mexican school, before I was transferred to an American school. I can write it a bit well...

English: Second Language. Went to an American school all my life.

Japanese: Had been studying in 12th grade(half a year, never truly mastered it, we only learned many Japanese words), but the school removed it because of a something to do with the teacher(nothing illegal...).

And that is about it, for me...

You were born on the same day as your birthday, right?

I'm Chinese but I live in Canada...so my English is better than my Chinese :P
I can speak Cantonese, fake it with Mandarin, but I'm pretty illiterate >.<
I also know some French since it's mandatory here...

I want to learn something new, though. Anyone got any suggestions? :phoenix:

Well, for me, I can speak English rather fluently which is a given where I live. I can talk in Cantonese Chinese but not fluently though and read very well but I can't write. Mandarin Chinese is a different story as I can understand it but can't speak or talk. I can understand some Japanese and talk a bit but I can't string a conversation fully in Japanese yet. I'm slightly proficient in reading German and French but can't talk in them both.

I was thinking about German but it's got a really throaty sound, doesn't it? My pronunciations would turn out terrible :payne:
