there is nothing wrong with sampling. it is taking another artist's music, altering it and incorporating it into your own. it is far removed from stealing.

acts like Girl Talk are entirely based around sampling, and they're pretty damn good. sampling is not a bad thing.

Sampling isn't what's bad.

I'd say that would be remixing, where artists just seem to outright distort and muss around unnecessarily with the original music for their own lazy intentions, with the result sounding absolutely nothing like the original, and thus being completely uninteresting for a potential listener.

The good remixes are few and far between.

In my opinion, its alright in moderation. Depeche Mode, for example, do a lot of sampling. The difference between them and other bands is they sample generic sounds rather than chord progressions or other things from published songs. On the other hand, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, whatever the hell his name is now always bothered me. It seemed like every song he came out with in the late nineties and early two-thousands sampled some song from the eighties. After a while it makes you wish that people like him would come up with their own beats.

Right now I'm listening to Pet Shop Boys "Suburbia."

Pieces by Hoobastank
One of their better songs. Just an angry, I-hate-the-world kind of song, even if the lyrics don't imply that...the lyrics are pretty hard to decipher. :/ I'll let you decide for your own.

Spoiler: Lyrics
Turn around and pick up the pieces
I, like a rock, sink
Sinking til I hit the bottom
The water is much deeper than I thought
Nothing to swim with
Kicking but I keep sinking
A lesson that no one could have ever taught
Cause I can almost breathe the air
Right beyond my fingertips
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
One more push and I'll be there
Back where I belong
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
I see the picture
Blurry but now it's in focus
A fairy tale I purchased on my own
I finally woke up
Everything is better
A chance for me to open up and grow
I can almost breathe the air
Right beyond my fingertips
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
One more push and I'll be there
Back where I belong
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
Suffocating sinking further almost everyday
Barely treading water knowing I will not give up
I will not give up
I will not give up
I can almost breathe the air
Right beyond my fingertips
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
One more push and I'll be there
Back where I belong
I'll turn around and pick up the pieces
Turn around and pick up the pieces

Neuroticfish - The Bomb

OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD.

When I first heard this song, I was floored. It's so dark, so...emotional. Plus, what is "The Bomb"? Relationships? His heart? A literal bomb? I can hear the fear in the singer's voice. It's so raw and emotional. It terrifies me, and enthralls me.

This song is amazing.

I am listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication, which will be my first exposure to them on an album-intensive-listen level.

This album is horribly painful to listen to due to the super ultra compressed mastering of it and the whole "loudness war" bullshit. I am dead serious, it hurts like hell and sounds like crap. There's a static buzzing in the background, it clips, it's too fucking loud. The top/back of my head feels throbbing and I'm developing what feels like a stress-induced headache. But I can't stop now because I'm already more than halfway through it, but goddamn, the second it's over, I'm deleting it and every album that comes after this, because they were all mastered by the same stupid asshole.

The worst part is that I got Californication in lossless FLAC super high quality which I swear makes the horrible album quality even worse because every hiccup in the audio is clear as hell. Apparently this album is ten years old. How the hell has this lasted that long without somebody putting out a remastered edition that isn't painful to listen to.

Hmmm... I don't remember the production values of Californication being that bothersome. I'll have to re-listen for the background noise... odds are, though, that having mp3s is actually helping me by fuzzing the sound, here. Then again, I occasionally listen to screeching blasts of static and people screaming like animals for enjoyment, so there isn't much that can actually get on my nerves anymore >_>...

Edit: The old school Android Lust album I'm listening to now is totally awesome. Imagine a more atmospheric late 80's NIN with seethingly violent female vocals and you have a good idea of the sound. I'll post tracks if I can find em.

The lower the quality, the better the album probably sounds. But it's hard to not notice it once you realize that the mastering for Californication involved heavy, heavy amounts of compression and TURN UP THE VOLUME. If you compare it to, like, Blood Sex Sugar Magik or so

Californication's are really painful though. It's not like Melt-Banana style static or screeching, it's just... painful, I don't really know how to explain it.~

Right now I'm listening to Beck's Odelay and it is fairly groovy.

Heh, I looked up a song or two of Melt-Banana, and it was pretty ear raping (I could get into this...). Now you've got me wondering what the most inaccessible, unlistenable song (that I somehow still enjoy (in small doses)) in my library is.

I think it's gotta be a tossup between power-noise era Unter Null or classics era Aphex Twin (unending, incredibly repetitive screeching noises). Maybe Autechre can come too. What do you think =D?

That Depeche Mode track you posted was pretty awesome, Lunaria. I love 80's synthpop =D. You don't get snare/bass like that any more.

Edit: You might like this track. I was listening to some of Depeche Mode's other songs, and realized I had heard one before. It's a trance remix of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence" by Sasha and John Digweed. Very chill, as it's the end of a mix. Enjoy The Silence

PS. Wow, what the hell. As I was looking into this stuff, I found a Utada Hikaru/AFX mashup. It's terrifying...

I just really love this song. I remember this song was featured on a show about the real meaning behind songs. There are alot of theories about what the song is actually about, but I think the show said nuclear weapons and how they don't really make us any safer.
