why the hell did kristoph want to defend phoenix when he was the killer?? that seems like the stupidest thing he could have done. at least when tigre did it he tried to get a gulity verdict

Probably because he was planning on making things really bad for Phoenix, because he assumed that he'd be defending and he could slyly just... give a bad defense.

Firstly, Kristoph got a defence request from Phoenix. If he hadn't gone through with it, it would have seemed strange. Secondly, he was trying to pin the crime on Olga.

I second that, Kristoph was probably planning to have Olga take the fall for the murder, and failing that, he would fold and Phoenix would take the fall, keeping him from being found the guilty party.

Plus Phoenix asked him to be his defense lawyer, and becuase he is his friend it would look stranger than the Godot/Pearl pairing if he turned him down.

Apollo was a rookie lawyer. Kristoph could easily have taken control of him and guided his hand to pin the crime on Olga (who seemed like the most likely killer at the time). That and the complexity (or lack thereof) made it a hard defense.

Apollo had to win with FORGED evidence. That's how hard it was.
